if you want to sing along lads here you go the lyrics
Hark now the drums beat up again
    For all true soldiers gentlemen,
Then let us list and march, I say,
Over the Hills and far away.
    (Chorus)
Over the hills and o'er the main
    To Flanders, Portugal and Spain,
Queen Anne commands and we'll obey,
Over the hills and far away.
All gentlemen who have a mind,
To serve the queen both good and kind,
Come list and enter into pay,
Then over the hills and far away.
    (Chorus)
Over the hills and o'er the main
    To Flanders, Portugal and Spain,
Queen Anne commands and we'll obey,
Over the hills and far away.
No more from sound of drum retreat,
    While Marlborough and Galway beat,
The French and Spaniards every day,
When over the hills and far away.
    (Chorus)
Over the hills and o'er the main
    To Flanders, Portugal and Spain,
Queen Anne commands and we'll obey,
Over the hills and far away.
    40 shillings on the drum,
for those who volunteer to come,
with shirts and clothes and pleasant pay,
when over the hills and far away.
    (Chorus)
Over the hills and o'er the main
    To Flanders, Portugal and Spain,
Queen Anne commands and we'll obey,
Over the hills and far away.
Our 'prentice Tom may now refuse
To wipe his angry Master's Shoes,
For now he's free to sing and play,
    (Chorus)
Over the hills and o'er the main
    To Flanders, Portugal and Spain,
Queen Anne commands and we'll obey,
Over the hills and far away.
We then shall lead more happy lives,
By getting rid of brats and wives,
That scold and bawl both night and day -
over the hills and far away.
    (Chorus)
Over the hills and o'er the main
    To Flanders, Portugal and Spain,
Queen Anne commands and we'll obey,
Over the hills and far away.
For if we go 'tis one to ten,
    But we return all gentlemen
All gentlemen as well as they,
Over the hills and far away.
    (Chorus)
Over the hills and o'er the main
    To Flanders, Portugal and Spain,
Queen Anne commands and we'll obey,
Over the hills and far away.

    • @Iason29
      @Iason29 Před 4 lety +24

@@Hatypus Some alliance, more like Britain's home boy. When did Britain ever take Portugal's side over anything or treat the as equals to the treaty? In the late 19th century Portugal wanted the land of Zimbabwe and Rhodesia to connect their colonies of Angola and Mozambique and expected support from Britain since they were allies for centuries. They just stabbed them in the back, even threatened Portugal with war if they didn't immediately drop their claim. Britain only "respects" alliances when it suits them.

    • @Hatypus
      @Hatypus Před 4 lety +45

@@Iason29 Britain took Portugal's side for several centuries. During the 1800s the alliance was strained, thanks to Metternich and the Congress of Vienna, but WW1 helped revive it, and Portugal was willing to join ww2 but that was decided against to keep Spain from joining as well, as now both countries are in NATO. One century of straining relations does not change the entire history of the alliance.

Northern Marches The lyrics actually date from the early 1700s and relate to the War of the Spanish Succession, 1701-1714. The references to Marlborough and Rudd were to frequently victorious British generals of that war. By the Napoleonic era, the tune was a traditional marching song, like “Yankee Doodle” is to modern Americans. I think that the tune may be newer than the lyrics. It is not typical of Napoleonic era tuned, I think.

You know what I have learned from my experience of being alive?
    Rules:
    1. Never Piss off Anglos, Slavs, Muslims and Israelis.
    2. Never underestimate an Island nation like UK and Japan
    3. Guys in red uniforms always scary and powerful (Soviets, Chinese, Red Coats, Romans)
    4. Goose-stepping is not going away any time soon.
    5. If you're starting a war you better have apex level of world economy cause if you don't you will lose fast. And you better finish it fast or your economy will suffer along with the people.
    6. Russians and Americans are like twins when it comes to being crazy and having violent pasts.
    7. Every Empire collapses
