  • There have been several versions of this British tune since the 17th century. These lyrics were written by John Tams for the TV series 'Sharpe' starring Sean Bean. It's a favorite in re-enacting circles and I love the recording that John Tams made for the series soundtrack.

Here's forty shillings on the drum
For those who volunteer to come,
To 'list and fight the foe today
Over the hills and far away
O'er the hills and o'er the main
    Through Flanders, Portugal and Spain
King George commands and we obey
Over the hills and far away
When duty calls me I must go
To stand and face another foe
But part of me will always stray
Over the hills and far away
    O'er the hills...
If I should fall to rise no more
    As many comrades did before
Then ask the fifes and drums to play
Over the hills and far away
    O'er the hills...
Then fall in lads behind the drum
With colours blazing like the sun
Along the road to come what may
Over the hills and far away
    O'er the hills...

This song reminds me of East Anglia.

A fine rendition, sir! As much as I enjoy Tams' version (and I always well up a bit when I hear it), I am struck by how much it differs in tone and spirit from the lyrics from Queen Anne's day. Originally, it sounded very much like a jaunty recruiting song that mixed a bit of patriotism with the desire to escape the mundane cares and responsibilities of civilian life; it also sold service in the army as a way to achieve social equality, in a way. Tams' lyrics are beautiful, but they also strike me as a relatively somber - and modern - take on the soldier's life.

Thank you! I’ve thought the same thing about the Queen Anne and John Tams versions of the song. I like them both but keep coming back to Tams.

I’m working on that as a matter of fact! I learned Planxty’s version years ago but the Paul Brady recording is amazing.

Try "Arthur MacBride" as the other side to the story
