- Nadine Dorries exclusively reveals to TalkTV why she has decided to step down as an MP with 'immediate effect'.
She also tells TalkTV she hasn't even told members of her family that she has decided to resign as an MP.
Rishi Sunak is facing a by-election after Nadine Dorries announced she is standing down as an MP “with immediate effect”.
Nadine Dorries tells TalkTV that she had been told to keep the Online Safety Bill "in the long grass" but managed to get it to the position it's in now with the help of Boris Johnson.
The move comes after months-long speculation that the former culture secretary was to be handed a peerage in Boris Johnson’s resignation honours list, although recent reporting suggested the Government cut her from the list at the 11th hour to swerve an early election battle in her seat.
The former prime minister’s long-awaited list, which is said to include around 50 names, is expected to be released imminently.
Ms Dorries tweeted on Friday afternoon: “I have today informed the chief whip that I am standing down as the MP for Mid Bedfordshire, with immediate effect.
“It has been an honour to serve as the MP for such a wonderful constituency but it is now time for another to take the reins.”

Was Nadine Dorries right to quit as an MP?
Yes because she wanted the sell off CH4 to Murdock and earn a backhander when it went through.

You were elected to represent your constituents in Parliament. If a politician is going to be putting outside interests first, they need to declare this *before* asking for votes. Disgraceful.

What a load of twaddle. I held on because I thought I was on the list. I'm not and I am stepping down. If I had been on the list - I would have had to step down to take the peerage I wanted. As an MP, I realised I was overcommitted what with the extra jobs I took on for lots of extra dosh and exposure. My heart bleeds. And in a real shocker - I believed a known liar who strongly suggested I would get a peerage but...erm.....I didn't. Who'd have seen that coming?

Again, the only 'evidence' for this expansion is a study from Imperial that was then fabricated by Khan and his team to try and justify the expansion. That's how flawed it is.

Plenty of people who have not done anything receive honours, especially if they work for the government. I believe I know, as I used to be a Whitehall Civil Servant and one of the things I dealt with was my Department's Honours recommendations, and I had dealings with quite a few people who had MBEs, OBEs, CBE's, CB's, Knighthoods and Peerages.

MPs can be elevated to a peerage but of course they have to leave the Commons before taking it up. The official claim that a seat in the Lords is unpaid is utter bollocks. It would have represented a very tidy pay rise for her and comes with zero responsibilities. My heart bleeds for her.
