  • Back in 2018 during a Foo Fighters concert in Austin, Yayo Sanchez, AKA "KISS guy," joined the band on stage to play the song "Monkey Wrench."
Dave Grohl says the idea has been a "twisted fantasy" for him since childhood.

It's been nine years or so, but I did a music project with Dave Grohl that spanned about a week. Had never met him, we were strangers. But once we met, he treated me like I had been a good friend for years...and I treated him the same way, because...this is Texas. Was a lot of down time with all of us hanging out, cooking brisket, playing guitars on a back patio. No cameras around, no one documenting it. Just basically a group of regular guys hanging out. So, when you see Dave onstage, in interviews like this, being a cool guy and doing kind things for people...well, that's just Dave. That's how he really is. It's not a gimmick. It's not an act for the cameras to catch. He is that kind, that genuine, that real. Hasn't been often, but we've kept in touch. I sent him a text telling him I would see him that night, here in Austin. He told me to give away my tickets, as he'd leave all-access passes at the door for me. And he did. So that night, I got to see Kiss guy from the side of the stage, and his guitar tech and all the crew were just laughing in disbelief. He doesn't always do it, but he has extra Gibson guitars onhand, in case he gives one to someone he brings onstage. Like the 7 or 8 yr. old boy he got up one time. There are people who aren't the biggest Foo Fighters fans, but they're Dave Grohl fans, and that's why they go to their shows. And over time, they do become fans. As kids and even as adults, we've all had that dream of getting invited onstage. And that is why he does it. He makes people's dreams come true. Same way he pays homage by inviting legendary musicians and singers onstage when he can. Bringing his daughter onstage, because he's just a proud papa. So, is Dave really the coolest, nicest guy around? Yeah..yeah he is.

@@dwainsellers6453 I've worked with, done shows with a lot of famous musicians over the years. The difficult ones really make you appreciate the very kind and easy-going ones, like Grohl. If that opportunity was to come up again, I'd jump on it. You do it for the love and fun of it, and the money is just a bonus. So, when people ask if Dave Grohl is really that cool and nice in person, onstage, the way they see him or the way he's portrayed? Or is it just an act? That's when I'll chime in and tell people what you see is what you get. Dave is the genuine article. Another thing I like about Dave. Who always gets paid first? The crew. Everyone who works so hard behind the stage or behind the scenes, to make the Foo Fighters look and sound good. And out of the band, Dave is the last to get paid. Because that's just how Dave is.

Haha, I played in bands in north America. Playing sweet gigs at clubs and bars. Then i started playing in eastern Europe ( klezmer and balkan folk music) in kafanas ( restaurant/bar) where the musicians walk around the tables, joking around playing music, taking requests. Sometimes just faking it. I never had so much fun. Going back to north America i found the musician culture to be very insincere and egotistical. And patrons of gigs to be so concerned with the image of being at a live show than actually being at the show. Also when playing in the balkans, you get paid by the patrons through tips. And that in itself was huge everyone becomes involved. Totally different culture. I miss it. Haven't been able to play since covid lockdown. I went to a open mic near me( after working on the soundtrack for a serbian feature film.) And played some serbian music in 7/8 at 260bpm, a very tough piece. And got silence and blinks. Haha. Then a woman come up and played Wagonwheel (poorly) and every was ecstatic.
It was then i realized, my skills are completely useless in north America. I just finished learning a bunch of romanian folk music and Italian tarantellas. And while practicing, i wonder why. No one wants to hear it. Its pretty darn depressing, Thankfully I play because i love music and not for adoration. I can and do play all styles.

Dude…it’s still exceedingly rare to get the opportunity to do that. Even if there’s several bands that bring a fan up sometimes, or even if the6 did it every show, that’s one lucky ass fan that night but there’s a thousand dudes watching from the cheap seats that are dyin watching somebody else get to be up there when it should be them. I think the original point was that there’s a helluva lot of fans out there that dream of just what dace was describing as his fantasy as a kid saving the day because he knows all the songs when the drummer suddenly cant play. But there’s only a comparatively tiny number of lucky bastards that gets to actually jump up there and play with his heroes, and it’s extra cool of the few musicians who do this for their fans. And no, I don’t want a list of bands that have done it because it doesn’t matter, it’s a small minority and the demand for such an opportunity will forever far exceed the supply.

This was my dream as a kid too with the Smashing Pumpkins. 15 concerts later of theirs.. no stage for me! But! I still practiced for that moment in my room, everyday, rocking out with my bass dreaming of standing beside them all on stage, singing backing vocals and playing the songs I loved more than the air I breathed..
The first time I saw the "Kiss Guy" footage.. I cried. And cried. Like, ugly cried. My heart was bursting because that young man was having his moment with the Foo Fighters.. to see the pure joy and delight - was so overwhelming.. his nightly practices to their music paid off..
I've had the honour of meeting Dave Grohl and I can tell you first hand, that man is the kindest, most down to earth rockstar on our planet. What you see and hear, is genuine. He's just THAT great. I hope he never ever stops sharing that love.
Thanks for the great little interview! ❤

I grew up playing country and blues until at 14 I discovered ACDC and music was never the same. I love Dave for the human aspects of things, he knows "EXACTLY" what's it's like to feel that surge of awesomeness , and for him to allow someone to come up and play is just one of the most kindest things any human could do for another so with that, I love ya Dave your seriously my kind of guy.
I've had this same desire as Kiss Guy and even though I'm 56 today ( Still feel 25 lol ) and have made music my whole life since the age of 10 when I got my first guitar, I have "NEVER" been to a concert and I don't know why. The best reason I can think of is just because I wanted to be the singer so bad , I would just feel terrible , jealous, and full of envy to not be on stage performing. I've done a lot of stuff for an audience and my style is James Taylor, JOHN PRINE for sure, Jim Croce and a whole list of country guys from the 80's and 90's. I still dream of one day being known because my whole I've been told by family, friends, and most certainly audiences that I should be in the public eye singing and playing so we'll see I've still got a lot of time and we never know when a dream will come true so I'll keep on dreaming.
Anyways RIGHT ON DAVE for allowing Yayo to live the dream even if it was only for a minutes , you're a very special stand up guy
Cheers from Merritt B.C. ( The country music capital of Canada ) Jan 13/24

I've met quite a few stars in music & film, and most times it's not a big thing for me, they're just people.
But there are a few I would like to meet, and Dave is #1 on that short list.
He is really the most humble rock star I think there is out there. Very rare.
1 He has Sound City, and keeps it just the way it's always been.
2 He does this at his shows, letting fans actually come up on stage and play with them. Nobody else in any band I've ever seen would even dare to think of doing so.
3 He has single handedly brought back the word MOTHERFUCKER as a term of endearment!
    And it's my favorite word.
I hope one day I can play Razor with them.
    Be safe out there people!!

If Dave invited a fan up on stage during a Nirvana show I think Kurt would walk off the stage …. It’s amazing how teenage angst clouds the fear of death and how as you mature you loose that initial core of artistic integrity so that you allow everything you worked for to turn into Roger Daltry’s middle aged rock camp …. Great job!
