He told his fans, "if you can stand out there in the pouring rain to see me in concert, you better believe I'm going to perform". There's most certainly a few that I don't agree with on this statement, but absolutely for the most part musicians love their fans. Especially the one's who're fully dedicated to the craft and not just in it for money. Axel Rose, by the way, is one of the musicians I would say doesn't, and another WAS Ivan from FFDP before he got sober. Axel Rose is just a total douchebag, but Ivan is fantastic now that he's not constantly drunk.

      @beenaplumber8379 Před 3 lety +50

      I jammed with a really famous rock drummer once in the studio (can't say who, sorry), and he told me all about that feeling. During a song, he broke a stick and accidentally shoved it through his hand - all the way through - in front of 20,000 people. He didn't describe his reaction in terms of how he felt, just what happened. He yanked it out, grabbed another stick, finished the song, and didn't feel a thing. He taped it up and played the rest of the show with blood splashed all over his drum heads and his forearm covered in blood, which the fans of his band probably thought was cool. He said the energy of playing stadiums and arenas in a major rock band (they were headlining the big stadiums) has a way of eliminating the self and you become part of the experience, not the one who's bringing the experience. The idea of breaking that connection was just unthinkable. He swore he felt no pain at all, and he'd had no drugs or alcohol. It feels like the same story Dave Grohl told in this clip.
      I play rock bass in bars, and my biggest audience has been maybe 2000 people, and I can relate to that feeling and that attitude, but I've never been so into it that I could have my hand impaled or break my leg and not feel it. But I know where that feeling comes from. A good rock show is far greater than the sum of its parts (musicians + audience). The audience feeds the musicians as much as the musicians feed the audience. It gets like a screaming locomotive. You can't stop it.

My involvement in the session was also contingent on his anonymity.
      When your dreams come true, things aren't always as you thought they'd be. Life as a touring musician isn't for everyone. I'm not sure I'd survive. There is so much power at play.

    I once saw the Foo Fighters at the Continental Airlines Arena in 2003, maybe 2004. While there, Dave Grohl looked around at the audience and started talking to us. Out of nowhere, Dave asked the audience if we all thought drugs were cool. Naturally, people began to shout yes, and they cheered very loudly. After hearing the response, Dave came back in a semi-serious tone, and demanded of us 'don't do drugs, drugs aren't cool - look at me... I don't do drugs, and I just sold out the... uhh... (and looked around, unable to remember where he was) the super duper dome!' Absolutely hilarious. I don't remember the exchange word for word, but he definitely said that he sold out the super duper dome because he gave up drugs.
    Later that evening, Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen came out to perform with the Foo Fighters. Dave decided to play drums and had Taylor sing because he said that his voice wasn't good enough to do Freddie Mercury justice. These guys are absolutely incredible in concert. There are very few bands that give better performances than the Foo Fighters, and one of those bands happens to be Queen. Granted, Freddie Mercury has been long gone, but to have the privilege of seeing two members of the greatest band of all time with one of the greatest bands of modern time together on stage was as good as it can get.

    Many people in Norway and Sweden don't like the host because instead of being this Letterman-esque TV personality with his own talk show and he'll let you know it, he's more of a guy making his guests do the talking while taking a backseat position.
    Personally i think this is the best format out of any talk show on TV and I'm just happy I understand what's being said no matter what language the episode is in.

    • @bugbasher
      @bugbasher Před 5 lety +76

      I agree. The best talks on Skavlan are the ones where one guest starts asking their own questions to another guests. All of a sudden there's absolutely no script and things get so sincere and interesting.

    • @lexsmithee652
      @lexsmithee652 Před 4 lety +8

      I like that Skavlan lets his guests talk, and thats probably his best feature. He does however have a lot of other habits that a lot of people aren't fond of. Skavlan (the show) is better the less Skavlan (the guy) talks and involves himself. If you watch some of the more serious interviews, where people talk about serious, traumatic experiences, Skavlan has a tendency to hard transition to a super joyful happy topic in this very cold and unfeeling manner right as they've finished telling the story. He seems so cold and uncaring sometimes, and that's really offputting.
      So I like that Skavlan let's his guests talk the way he does, but that doesn't mean that I have to like Skavlan as a host in his entirety.

When practicing jumps, one of the most important parts is knowing early when you're not going to succeed because hitting the ground prepared to roll or slide is safer than hitting the ground with your bike but without control and having the bike slam you in the torso.
      When Dave tripped, he knew he couldn't regain control and avoid the edge, so took as much control of the fall as possible by jumping. Without the jump, he would have been going to hospital immediately.

    I’m reading Dave’s autobiography right now and the clips of the incident and his retellings of it are EXACTLY the way he recounts it in his book, down to the speech he gives his audience when he falls to the black leather jacket his wife was wearing. The fact that he finished the show on pure adrenaline after snapping his leg is incredible. SO. MUCH. RESPECT.

    Watching Dave's reaction to seeing the doctor in the studio reminds me of the time that kid with cerebral palsy surprised Mr. Rogers during some award presentation and how excited Mr. Rogers was, not about the award, but to see an old friend. Dave Grohl is rock and roll Mr. Rogers. He clearly just loves everybody.
    Edit: Jesus Christ, I posted this not too long before Taylor Hawkins' death. He was also one of the genuinely good guys of hard rock. I'm so upset that he's gone and I cannot believe a man so genuine and good as Dave Grohl is being forced to deal with ANOTHER loss of this magnitude. My heart is with the Hawkins family and with Taylor's band mates.

    It made me smile when the interviewer said to the doctor something along the lines of, 'You are a real professional doctor yet you are also a Foo Fighters fan' as if the two things are incompatible.
    Why shouldn't a doctor like the music of Foo Fighters? I wonder what sort of music he thinks a doctor should be listening to?

    • @scooter2161
      @scooter2161 Před 4 lety +13

      Well, I think he's more or less making the point that because the doctor is a Foo Fighters fan, he was a little biased in his professional medical opinion to keep him at the concert instead of insisting that he go to the hospital immediately because he wanted to see the concert go on. I don't think he was implying that you can't be a both a doctor and a Foo Fighters fan, although literally what he spoke might sound that way. Maybe a slight language barrier or something regarding the specifics of english.
