To be honest traditionally Chinese people hate to be criticized or get their negative side exposed publicly... it is all part of the 'face saving' culture. Even honest constructive criticism is seen as rude behavior, they believe that an cultured, educated man should know when to 'give face'. I guess Winston choice of words sound a bit rude to Chinese ears, but I understand it is his freedom to say whatever he want, and he is not making things up. Of course the West works differently, and actually this is the part of Chinese culture I hated most. I believe respect have to be earned. To westerners, Chinese are so thin-skin and sensitive, and seems weak and insecure, to a certain degree they are.

If Mao Zhe Dong didn't destroy 5,000 years of Chinese tradition, culture, and history in the cultural revolution, there would probably be a lot more kinder, well mannered people in main land China. It's no coincidence that Taiwanese and Hong Kongese are a lot more friendly and liberal than the main land Chinese.

The cultural revolution had this thing where children could (and did) turn in their parents as bourgeoisie tools, as a tantrum because they were made to eat their vegetables. The massive upshot was that many parents were terrified of their own children and treated them like a servant would treat a despotic ruler. These incredibly dysfunctional children grew up with no ethics nor manners and are "the wise elders" right now.

    Dear Winston and C-milk:
We’ve been following you for at least 1.5 years and we’ve pretty much watched all of your videos, together or separate. I feel like that I have to leave a message now after half through this video. We’re an interracial couple who are academics in UK and I am Chinese, born, raised and educated in China before my PhD in UK. I can vouch for the fairness, rationality and open-mindedness of your videos, and both of you, with my character and my life-long experience with Chinese people inside and outside China. It is utterly sad and disappointed to see those irrational, narrow-minded, nationalistic, clueless detractors (both Chinese and non-Chinese) and I cannot imagine how many negative impacts they may have forced upon you two, who have both contributed tremendously towards our culture by identifying the real problems intentionally hidden by others, and introducing the rare freedom of speech and thinking when we are at thirst. As a country, a culture and an individual, we are desperately in need of those unbiased opinions and the courage to reveal the real China.
Your videos are crucial evidence that support my opinions and my experiences about my country as well. I have been trying so hard to reveal the uncensored China and to analyse the cultural/ historical/ humanistic background for those claims, beauty and problems. I frequently encounter disbeliever (mostly non-Chinese) and even deniers (mostly Chinese). I cannot justify why critical thinking can be interpreted as attacks, treason, etc. I feel the bizarre isolation of simply being a truthful critical thinker.
A society cannot thrive upon lies, cover-ups and controls. I thank you for your contributions towards unveiling the real China, the beauty, mystery, sophistication and obstacles. I think you’ve grown seeds of hopes.
Merry Christmas. Welcome to visit us. We are awesome.

Impressions that Chinese people have no empathy (no semaritans, the roadkill videos etc.) and all the other terrible things we've all read about China. Most people probably think that China is a retarded horrific place from the news they're getting.

This is both a cultural and education thing among Chinese people. We were brought up being told that we should love our country and nation (and to a greater extend the CCP)as our mother. So anyone basically mentions anything slightly negative about China would be taken on a very personal level. Hurting China's image (even though is not necessarily the case) for them is making them loksing their own faces. I know this mentality is quite juvenile but unfortunately that's just the way it is.

Well I'm from a country that used to be in the Soviet block (Bulgaria), with all the communism and everything and I see the same 'glass heart', 'but-hurt' reactions from a lot of Bulgarians (especially old people). It's not that bad like in China, but you definitely can find parallels. It's due to low self esteem as a part of a group that chose the wrong political system and fell behind economically. And yes things are way, way, WAY better now being part of the EU but still you can see the scars so to speak (in the minds and in the old infrastructure). So don't wonder, it's just a product of the communist political system.

The American in me has always wanted to see the industrious and orderly societies in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. While the Mexican in me has always been interested in the adventurous and culturally diverse places like Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines. But China always seemed to be middle of the road, a luke warm dystopia with an over bearing government and a forgotten history. Also, people are very sensitive and defensive whenever there's an opinion from a foreigner about China. These are super informative videos and pretty much in line with perceptions about Chinese that not only you have but many other non Chinese Asians have as I have travelled around Asia. Being of Asian descent and having super asian parents who don't care for constructive criticism but simply obedient people respecting them to make them feel good about themselves, your videos will always be hated unless you don't give any opinion about China aside from just talking about the good stuff.
Right now China thinks they are the shit and go around traveling even in other asian countries and acting like they own the place. It's been very enlightening to meet other Asians in Asia who have told me how much they hate them. Particularly in Vietnam, a communist country, I was surprised to see that a majority of the Vietnamese were talking crap about the Chinese with me for no apparent reason and telling me how much they are interested in America. Right now the whole Korean sensation thing is big here and it's apparent the the Vietnamese siding with China has gotten them nowhere but the Chinese just bullying them while the Koreans who were able to keep the communists up north are enjoying wealth and success having sided with the Americans.
Anyways, keep up the good work and hope you and your family stay safe... I really fear for your guy's lives. And if the Chinese can take criticism and realize how they are being perceived by the rest of the world, maybe they could be a superpower but as of right now they are just losing respect around the world by disrespecting people, not being able to take criticism, and acting like barbarians with stupid comments thinking that's somehow going to make people respect China... You really should consider moving to another country.
I honestly think it's the government brainwashing them because in California I'll say that my best friends are Chinese Americans. They are the most open minded, intelligent, loyal friends I have. It's sad to see mainlanders making them look bad. But eh... who am I to talk, America has its own problems with idiotic people making us look bad too. I just truly hope the horrible comments you got are from the most ignorant .0001% of the country's people.

SerpentZA - Laowhy86 I think you guys should do a follow up video to this aimed at Chinese people rather than aimed at the western audience. Call it something like "Why it's good to critisize your own country - politics - culture" And give examples of how people around the world do protests against their government's laws they don't agree with, or critisize eachother for things they don't agree with (like gun ownership in the US), or critisize eachother for cultural problems (like obesity and junk food in America). The idea of the video is to let your chinese subs know that hey... "Western people openly critisize themselves about things they don't like because they see the value in spreading that information - and YES they will critisize you too". You get what I mean by this video suggestion? A friend of mine has a saying, "Protest is patriotism".

I know how to size people up pretty well, I am a reasonably good judge of character, and I get the distinct idea behind why you both went to China for the specific purpose of describing what you experienced with honesty and not simply reaching for the lowest possible meaning intent on offending the country and the nation of China. I have never seen that as your motivation in making these Vlogs. People know the truth and those that get butt hurt so quickly and easily are welcome to come to America and make your observations and most will simply shrug and say well you may have a point there. You guys really gave me some perspectives on some Chinese phenomenon, which makes my life easier. Please continue to make more video.

    1. There are many trolls on the internet.
    2. Don't be effected by negative comments, do yourself, or you will be glass-hearted.

Winston you do a great job of having to walk on eggshells in your videos trying to inform us about Chinese life. I couldn't do it as well as you do. Great job

    Guys,
maybe it is time to change your overall direction a little bit. In this day and age we are too much about comparison and competition, which always leads to conflict. Never compare apples and pears, no?
The reason why I joined all your channels was to see beautifully exotic, raw, unfiltered pictures from another (your) wonderful country.
You chuckled about Chinese wishing you Happy Thanksgiving! :) I had Americans wishing me the same, completely unaware it was a US - only holiday. When it comes to naivete and unawareness of rest of the world, each country is the same. As a Swede you will not know about the German states, ... or as a South African about the states of the USA. In your last video, Winston you did not even know if Maryland was a state. :)
Everyone is naive about something and ignorant about something else. It does no good to focus on pointing these issues out constantly. What people like about your channel most is the chance to travel to your home country, through your eyes, sit on your bikes with you , drive to villages alongside your channel, experience China.
We don't really want to know what Chinese are bad at, show more of what they do good? Visit factories, farms and schools, local youth projects, clubs, go for a drink again! Do another documentary like your 'Conquering Southern China' , that was bloody brilliant and everyone loves it - because you are fair and lovely.
Just my 'two yuan' - as a loooong time subscriber!
