1. INTRODUCTION
The longan (Dimocarpus longan Lour.) is a highly esteemed fruit species in Asia. It grows satisfactorily in tropical and subtropical regions but is commercially grown in China, Thailand and Vietnam and to a limited scale in all South East Asian countries, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Australia and United States of America.
Longan is originated in the mountainous region from Myanmar to Southern China. Longan is also known as the dragon’s eye because of the characteristic white eye-shaped mark on the pit.
The longan was introduced in India in year 1798. Longan can be grown throughout India from the south up to the north-eastern borders except temperate and arid regions. The trees grow best in tropical regions with mild summers and winters, and even rainfall. In our country, West Bengal is a prominent longan grower.
Why is longan called Dragon eye?
The longan is a close cousin of the Lychee and the Rambutan but they are really the only ones that look like a real dragon eye. It comes from the Soapberry tree and it's called dragon's eye due to its contrasting white flesh and dark seed.
What is the climate for longan fruit tree?
Warm temperatures 21 to 29°C during spring, followed by high summer temperatures 27 to 35°C and non-limiting soil moisture are best for fruit development. Warm and rainy winters are conducive to vegetative growth and reduce flowering and Longan fruit production.
Soil: The preferred soils for longan cultivation are heavy, fine textured red loamy soils with high fertility and good water holding capacity. In general, wet lowlands or heavy clay soils should be avoided for longan cultivation. Longan thrives on rich sandy loams, it does well on soil with limestone content.
Flowering takes place in December and fruit harvesting occurs in late June to early July.
In India, the longan grows well in alluvial soils of north Bihar and West Bengal. The growth of tree is comparatively slow in acidic laterite soil of Kodagu region of Western Ghats.
Nutrient deficiency symptoms
Nitrogen: Nitrogen is the most important nutrient affecting growth and productivity, with deficiency symptoms appearing when leaf concentrations fall below 1.3% in dry matter. Because nitrogen moves from old to young leaves when its concentration in plants is low, the older leaves are the first to turn yellow. When the deficiency is severe, leaf expansion, flowering and fruit set are severely affected. Fruits are small with a low flesh recovery and poor eating quality.
Phosphorus: In phosphorus deficiency, dead patches developed on the tips and margins of mature leaves and progress towards the midrib. The necrosis is typically copper-brown. Eventually, the leaves curl up, dry and finally fall of the trees.
Potassium: The first symptom of potassium deficiency is a general yellowing of the leaves, followed by the death of the leaf tips and later the bases of the leaves.
What are the benefits of longan fruit?
Longan fruit is low in calories and is considered a superfood. Longan fruit has several health benefits. These fruits restore sleep, reduce anxiety, and enhance libido. In addition, this succulent fruit is beneficial in treating infections, skin issues, obesity, stress, and anxiety.
