- Welcome to part one of my anti piracy screens in video games iceberg. Part 2 will be up soon and if you would like to see more iceberg videos please check my playlist and subscribe to stay updated for future uploads.
There are many anti-piracy screens out there and many are simple ways to deter people from pirating games. However, some of these old games like Super Mario 64 and Donkey Kong Country have some pretty scary anti-piracy screens. - Hry
Just for anyone out of the loop, most “anti-piracy screens” are fake. The game will usually just freeze and tell you to get an authorized copy at best, most of the time it’ll just disconnect the readings from the controllers or just erase the files and reset.
Doesn’t make sense programming something into a game that nobody that actually paid for the game will ever see.
A couple notes- first off, the Mario 64 anti- piracy was actually fake. Second, he was holding the game cartridge, not court records.
yea he doesnt really mark fake ones all that well
9:25 Fun Fact: The song used in the infamous PSA, was pirated. It’s the equivalent of a bank robber telling kids not to rob banks.
I DID get the SNES anti-piracy screen when I was about 5 or 6 randomly while playing Super Mario World. I was scared shitless. I knew the copy was legit but I thought the cartridge had signaled the police and they were on their way. Who would they believe? A signal pointing to a crime or a kid with no proof of purchase? I was shaking, thinking rhey'd take me away from my family since they wouldn't believe me. 25 years later I still remember it clearly. Freakin traumatised me 😂
You almost certainly won't have to worry about the anti-piracy in earthbound if you emulate it because pretty much every emulator tricks the game into thinking it's on a real system.
Bonus: It also allows you to upscale the F# out of the original low res games. It's entirely possible to use super res these days to emulate 16bit games at resolutions up to 8k+
i used to be terrified of anti-piracy screens when I was younger
Exactly
The PSA:
,,You wouldnt steal a car"
Me:
,,You dont know me."
Halfway through watching, realized that this is super underrated. You deserve so much more and I can definitely see you growing a larger audience in the future.
Thank you!
I like how you included animal crossing wild world, because that's one of the few games I remember pirating as a child (I had a movie/game pirating family member, and i don't think he pirates content anymore, but if he does, he was much better at copying/pirating things from before 2015)
I also have a family member who used to pirate films all the time for me as a kid and I'd remember seeing the "YOU WOULDNT STEAL A CAAAAR" anti piracy message every time I watched pirated happy feet 2 and being so scared I was gonna get put in jail 💀💀💀
“They did the latter” was actually funny as shit.
Awesome video!
I love the way GMOD handled piracy. Found it funny how the fake error basically made the pirates expose themselves within the forums.
Can’t wait for part 2
3:39 I probably missed a joke, but that image of the Mario characters in prison is seen in the intro of the game when Bowser tricks them with lots of food to shrink them
It sucks that you included so many fake ones, I feel like joke of "haha tricked ya, this ones fake!" got stale really quick.
Same! I was thinking: Dude, Enough already...🙄🙄
I could tell the wildworld one was face cause it said 'convinced' instead of 'convicted'
Do love it when game developers put something in the game that messes with pirates and whenever a pirate asks others for help about it online it just exposes their pirating ways.
Thank you for pointing out which ones are fake or not. YT is plagued with fake anti-piracy/error screens
This is a great vid! Please keep doing these, they’re genuinely great as background noise to listen to (while I’m drawing) and watch in my spare time!
Also, side note: 4:29 - Weeg does look a little too used to prison lol
The Spyro anti piracy stuff is only on the third game, Spyro Year of the dragon, not the first one. And you missed the worst part: getting to the final boss resets you back to the first level and wipes your save.
wasnt expecting much but this is a pretty good video
You are one of my favorite youtubers! I enjoy the icebergs
6:01 measures like this that required the manual or some other physical thing in the box were quite common on pc games, but they were easily beaten by a photocopier.
tbf anti piracy measures are quite common everywhere, and easily beat by a little coding knowledge.
3:47 That picture of the gang behind bars is just in the normal game where Bowser captures them then shrinks them.
this video deserves more views. good stuff.
8:07 This is way too accurate, considering how overpowered he is combined with all the trauma he endured from the events of _The Legend of Spyro._ 😥🤣
The Snes ones were using a check based on SRam and putting the check somewhere that the Snes can’t reach but a copying device can and i think people had this trigger on them while playing legit could be that the cartridge had been damaged or glitched in some way that put the check in a SRam location that the Snes can reach.
Some of these are obvious fakes because of typos. Like... come on guys. Proofread you're work.
Hahah, nice one
3:00 ROMs for Earthbound disable the piracy checks. And even if they didn't, just FYI that every emu does "save states," which literally negates the entire save system in the game.
The G-mod one was funny because pirates called themselves out in forums asking about the error
It's weird to hear about the pack-in anti-piracy stuff for Monkey Island and not hear the term 'feelies'. Lots of games back then included bonus pack-in items as an encouragement to buy the actual version. Eventually, a lot of these feelies became part of the piracy protection, with them being guidebooks (printed black on red paper to prevent xeroxing) or code-wheels that would be referenced in-game.
Ngl now I wanna play a pirated version of earthbound cause it sounds like a fun challenge to play the game with extra enemies added in
Tbh i think itd be better than the original game so grinding is easier
there's a game genie code to enable it, but if you play the game with it on i recommend savestating a lot and keeping backup savestates, because the sheer amount of enemies the game spawns makes it very prone to crashing + there's a ton of glitches (for example, the fourside department store has clones of ness that run away from you, give 0 exp and can crash the game when killed)
Gmod literally leaked your steam ID so everyone knew you were a bad person, LESS HARMFUL💀
Deserves. Way. More. Views.
gamedev tycoon has one of the most genius antipiracy measures i've ever seen, respect for including it
Have always wondered with pirated copy's of games where they just mess with the pirate by removing a key system from the game that if you are still able to beat it, like using speed run tech and glitches to overcome the obstacle.
I think the Gmod one the numbers of the error is actually the numbers of the pirates steam account, so when they post online about the problem they can ban them
I love how you roast Miyamoto in your videos. Im all in for it. 😎
the only thing i didnt like about AP screens specially the mario ones is how they always use the wario head for no reason, like dude that was for M64, no reason to use it on all the ones you made, this trend got extremely repetitive so fast that the fun ended very quickly tbh
I ripped undertale off on HS with Torrent and I never saw any anti piracy measure
Because they’re all fake.
out of all the games to pirate undertale is such a bad one to do since it was created by an indie developer who’s actually a nice guy. we steal from big corporations, people!
ofc he’s not really an “indie” developer as much anymore since undertale blew up but he deserves everything he makes from his games
Because anti piracy measures only catch people who send the games to friends, or post their copy unmodified, sometimes it's as easy as removing a single file.
@@breanne2440 I was 15 chill.
9:44 idk if anyone said this yet but those anti pirating ads actually STOLE THE MUSIC USED FOR THE ADS. yeah they fkn pirated the fkn music and thats why those ads dont play anymore. the irony
The only 2 reason i pirate games is:
1- the game is not available to buy anymore
2- ITS WAY TOO EXPENSIVE WHERE I LIVE! Minecraft for exemple is like, 30 USD or something similar, but here, its almost 200! And it happens with a lot of other games!
Some ds games are so hard to come by for relatively recent games
So underrated
A lot of the fake ones have really poor spelling and grammar that ruins the illusion. Banjo-Kazooie says "your a pirate" and Wild World says the character was "convinced" of a crime.
@ 8:42 how do you even calculate that? that's pretty ridiculous
I once got the DKC2 piracy screen with my legit cart. I must've bumped the cart just right while booting it up. Scared the bejeezeus out of me.
They should of made the anti pricay measure for yoshi story everytime you go to eat a fruit yoshi stops for a full minute to disgust the fruit
I'm going to beat gta4 in drunk mode
If somethin you buy isnt yours then piracy is not a crime!
the mario party ds one is fake, the only thing thats real is the artwork, its when bowser captures everyone in a mini size with the mini wand or whatever its called
ya should be able to sniff out the fake ones
idk if its just me but both a gut feeling and something in the "back" of my brain light up
something inside just screams to me when it aint right
its sorta sad tbh
outside the piracy that is
they shouldve just made it soft lock saying "blame who you bought this from, if youre seeing this youre both braindead"
buyer hates seller
buyer distrusts their wares
seller slowly loses sales do to word spreading and busted games
ah sorry, common sense only existed when i was born and died out once i gained consciousness
Seller, no, no. I didn't buy this, I downloaded it for free :^) *TINECUC*
pirating games is cool and awesome actually
