I find myself drawn 😉 to illustrated album covers. I've bought records based off of artists who have drawn album covers i.e. Pushead, Ed Repky, etc. E, I, E, I, Owen! Awesome! This is such a cool thread! I'm trying to devour them all. Thanks for sharing. Your artistic sensibilities are wonderful.
I like your Max Webster cover, and the David Sylvian art work. Pere Ubu is cool, also Thomas Dolby ! Flash & The Pan art is excellent.. The Dashiel Hammett tie-in is good, made me think of "The Maltese Falcon" John Huston.. Director.
Great picks Brian. The Lou Reed cover is one of his best covers. Love how he tears a strip off the critics and record executives who get the best tickets. I agree wholeheartedly with those comments. I thought I was the only person in the VC that had the Mendelson Joe album. I saw Mainline quite a few times back in the day. I saw Joe once solo. Great painter. Cheers.

I’m embarrassed to say I never listened to Max Webster. I’ll have to check them out. When I think of illustrated covers, the one that comes to my mind is Elton’s Brown Dirt Cowboy. Wonderful album cover! Take care and keep them coming!

I've got my stuff together for this one, probably a double feature incorporating the cover contest, probably do that this afternoon if I can manage to stay home long enough. Looks like Lou Reed wanted to show that he was serious about taking no prisoners by tipping over garbage cans. It's a great drawing, and a cool cover. Love that Dukes of Stratosphear cover, still looking for that one. I've never seen that Pere Ubu cover before, I like that one. Mendelson Joe is another one I've never heard of, but Joe Mendelson sounds like a familiar name so I must have heard something about him before. Cool covers!

Interesting choices Brian. I considered 25 O'clock for my response as a 'by' but wasn't certain. I love the artwork on the Sylvian album, perhaps not the inner gatefold, I might look out for that...I've never heard Neutral Milk Hotel. Hi Gary - you can rest assured that I don't own any Japanese fans, so there was no waving of any kind. I love that cover too! By the way, I did one of those genetic tests, and the report back said: "Hey Brian! You have more Neanderthal DNA than 80% of other customers." By the way, that's less than 2%, in case you are wondering. Looks like I am the Neanderthal 🙃

A weird Pere Ubu cover, well it does fit their music now doesn’t it. No one has no idea often on what is going on. Someday I need to listen that Milk Hotel album ( whatever it is). Everyone praises it. I use to have the CD but it never spoke to me. I need to try it again
If any band should have weird album covers, it's Pere Ubu. They have always been very odd. Neutral Milk Hotel is awesome. You don't have to trust me, you can trust one of the VC Mikes, PC31 in this case 👍
Hi Brian, That cover on Max Webster does actually remind me of the Beer Store! I can envision a 2-4 of 50 rolling out. That Neutral Milk Hotel cover is an odd one. I remember that Thomas Dolby album but never had it. The green aliens look like Kang and Kodos from The Simpsons!
Self-serve beer stores were a thing of the future. I also remember going to the liquor store with my dad way back when. Customers had to fill out a paper slip noting what they wanted, and the clerks went back and grabbed the bottles. It seems so patriarchal now. Yes, Kang and Kodos!
My understanding is that this was a pseudo-temperance policy. You wouldn't want customers over-buying liquor. Bottles on display were simply too tempting for us weak citizens!
Hi Brian, thanks for all the great info there. There are a number there I haven’t seen before so I learnt a lot. I love all of the Dukes artwork, so Andy Partridge, he really captured a psych vibe with those. As I understand it, the NMH artwork is based upon a Victorian postcard depicting bathers. Some have said the arms raised looks like a nazi salute linking to the whole Ann Franks tragic story, but that’s far fetched imo. I think it’s all Victorian steampunk based and the main head has been turned into a drum for some reason. So I guess I don’t know either 😂😂 Is that Pere Ubu album a good one? Mike

I am biased when it comes to Pere Ubu, because I think the band is always interesting and great. Yes, it is a good one, but so are all of the rest! I have read the "The Maltese Falcon" but I don't think I have ever seen the movie. I wonder why. I guess I should get on that.

This one has less guitar than maybe the earlier stuff, but I still like it. I find Dave's voice really intriguing, but clearly many others do not!
