- In this episode, I take you through a year and a half of my work with the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN lens for Fuji. We explore portraits, street photography and video capabilities. I bought this lens with my own money and have used it on three different camera bodies. I've used it on professional and personal work and feel like I have enough time under my belt to give you my honest assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the Sigma 16mm 1.4.

I appreciate the full long term reviews, they may well influence future decisions.
I am a long term Fuji shooter and I know my opinion on some lenses changed over time.
I now shoot with the Sigma 56mm and 23mm for professional work, for years I pretty much only shot with the Fuji 35mm F/1.4, but more and more I am in situations where it is either not wide enough or tight enough. Working with models too since covid, people appreciate the space between photographer and model the 56mm provides over shooting with the 35mm, and the 23mm makes it easier doing full body portraits than using the 35mm which really made me backup to the wall (making it uncomfortable to shoot).
Anyway....
The 35mm and 56mm I will never regret having, the 23mm is only 2 weeks old... but after long term use some other lenses never sat right with me.
for me the Fuji 18mm F/2 (great little lens but there are compromises) the 27mm F/2.8 (never liked the focal length) , the 16-80 F/4 and the 10-24 F/4.
The 10-24 still gets used for video work as focus breathing is well controlled and if a super wide angle is needed for landscapes. The 16-80 was sold it was a good general purpose lens, just not great and I was never comfortable using it for professional work (really had to stop it down to F/8).
That is sort of the advantage I see with the Sigma lenses I have used, they are sharp at F/1.4 but are great at F/2.8 or F/4 where in my experience some fuji lenses are ok wide open but really need to be stopped down 2 stops and the lenses that are sharp wide open are 2x the price of the Sigma's. I Know sharpness is not everything but when you are doing full body portraits quite often the head is towards the edge of the sensor, and this is not where you want a portrait to be soft
I agree with your assessments. Especially about the 23. It’s my favorite FUJI lens. I also use the Sigma 56 and don’t feel a need to get the more expensive FUJI version.
I have that lens for my Fuji XT3 and I fell in love with it. I’m currently purchasing the Sigma 56mm

And three weeks later it’s still raining! Thanks for the review. I accidentally purchased a Fuji XT2 the other day. (Never window shop and leave things in the basket) so my first lens purchase is the Sigma 30 1.4. That 16 is on my bucket list for a near future purchase.

Hi! Thank you for this review! Regarding the 16mm sigma and AF noise during video. Ive seen some videos with the sigma mounted on Sony bodies, and its really loud, even when using external mic in the hot shoe. I use fujifilm myself so I dont know if this is a bigger problem using Sony.. But what is your experience with AF noise ? I dont want a mic mounted to far away from the camera
Sorry I didn't dive deeply into this. I went ahead and attached my 16mm to my XH2 after reading your comments. I will say that if you are wearing a lave and you're a meter or so from the camera, it's not an issue. But for a mic mounted on top of the camera, I could see the motor being too loud. Perhaps I should start amending my reviews to include both a lav and mounted mic for video.

Hey mate thanks for the review, I have this lens and use it for Walking Tours. For video, I have noticed the corners have very noticeable wobbling. Do you have an idea why this happens and how to address it? Thanks and keep it up!
