  • Another Sigma lens that seems to have quickly picked up a great reputation - and a 16mm f/1.4 lens is just the kind of thing that perks my interest. Let's take a closer look.

    Congratulations again, Chris! As always, a very useful and well presented, beautifully illustrated review, both visually and muscally! Altough I onw this lens since 2018, it'a a pleasure to see again that you also aprecciate the qualities of this lens. I used it with my Sony A6300, then 6500 and now A7R3.
    ON FULL FRAME (for those interested), with a 1.2x zoom, it has a very useful focal lenght of 20mm, and Capture 1 can somehow resolve minor problems with the sharpness and corner light fall-off, when shot in RAW. (Yes, you lose phase detection AF if zooming in, but otherwise works very fine, even in very low light: one candle and some light from a Christmass tree low-power LEDs). Even more, if not zoomed at all, in full frame and 4K video (but with markings on screen) you can afford to lose some field of view but one can stabilize in post processing VERY VERY efficientlly. So, you can film from a short monopod or with just a "cage" and don't need a gimbal at all, obtaining a super stabilized footage in full HD (and far more crisp than original Sony Full HD)

    Sigma hasn't invested in real full frame e-mount lens. However has started even before the introduction of full frame Sony α7 series the production of very good native autofocus APS-C e-mount lenses. The line up of f/1.4 e-mount Sigma lenses (16mm, 30mm, 56mm) is sharp, fast and quite affordable. The older 19mm, 30mm and 60mm f/2.8 ART lenses are good too but slower.
    Sigma has announced that it will produce a full frame FE e-mount lens without integrated adapter.

    Hi Christopher, was wondering how good is this Sigma 16mm F1.4 on a high resolution cameras like A7R2, R3 or R4? On paper this is definitely not supposed to be anywhere near the Sony's 24mm F1.4 GM or the Batis 25mm F2 but for this Sigma's price and sharpness, it will be interesting to see just how big the margin of differences between them. I'm always buying gears based on value, having bought all my gears used at the best possible "value". I currently own an A7R3 and the only lens I'm still keeping from my A6500 days is this Sigma 16mm F1.4, shooting on crop mode at 18mp resolutions, making it 24mm F2.
    Would appreciate your personal opinion on this, thank you.

    Hi Chris. I simply love your videos, it so detailed and technical. Yet simple to understand and easy to follow. Quick question, i am an amateur photographer, i have the Canon M50 and the lenses i have are the kit lens 15-45 efm, 22 Prime pancake lens which i use for street photography and portraits. I want a lens which i want to use for landscapes and architectural buildings dedicatedly, i prefer a prime lens, should i go for the Canon 11-22 efm or sigma 16 mm? Also i think the third option is getting a 32 mm efm. What do you think i should buy so that have a well rounded lens option. Bear in mind i can only buy one of these as my budget is about 500 dollars. Thanks.

      @pizzablender Před 4 lety +1

      Focal length determines what kind of image you will get. The 11-22 is wide. Wider than the kit lens. It will be new to you and useful for architecture.
      The at and 32 mm focal length give you better low light and more background blur. And more sharpness. But no new field of view.

    When will sigma start making lenses for Fuji X mount cameras

    • @dasaauto2024
      @dasaauto2024 Před 5 lety +4

      Lutfur Rahman This is from an interview in mid-March 2019: In a recent interview to lenstip, Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki said regarding making Fujifilm X mount Sigma lenses: "I really would want to but, you know, our resources are limited and it's all a matter of priorities.”
      Sigma really is at peak capacity, but I have a feeling there’s more going on in the background. It seems clear Fujifilm would rather not have another (very well made) 16mm f/1.4 lens made by a 3rd party that sells for about half he cost of theirs. Still, I think not having Sigma on board does more damage to Fuji than whatever sales they’d give up at those 3 focal lengths. For one, it props up Sony’s otherwise deserted (lens-wise) APS-C system, keeping Fuji from taking a larger percentage of the crop market.
      Maybe Fujifilm is demanding too steep a license fee for their X mount, or maybe they’re refusing to let Sigma use it at all, which they could do via their firmware updates. I think Sigma would sell more Fuji versions of their three f/1.4 primes than MFT, but I could be wrong. Hopefully Fuji and Sigma make it happen soon. Fuji’s worked so hard on APS-C I feel they deserve to have a much bigger percentage of the market to show for it. Not saying that this is an issue here, but pride and greed can unravel just about anything quickly.

      Dasa Auto Well at the end Fujifilm‘s APS-C lens lineup is unbeaten, they don‘t really _need_ third party lenses while Sony doesn‘t have a good APS-C lineup. I can imagine that Fujifilm is proud of their amazing lenses and they want people to use them and not go for third party options. Sony on the other hand is probably happy about some third party APS-C lenses because their offer is really limited. Fujifilm really invested in APS-C and it‘s paying off because they got a lot of attention in the last few years and with their latest cameras even more. And everyone I’ve seen talking about Fujifilm admire their lens lineup. So I don‘t think the lack of third party autofocus lenses is a problem at all.
      In those two years I‘ve been using Fujifilm, I’ve never missed any lens in the system, their offer always pleased me perfectly well. The only lens I‘ve been slightly interested in that Fujifilm doen‘t offer an equivalent to is the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8, but I‘m not 100% sure if I‘d really buy it because it‘s rather bulky lens and I prefer the tiny f/2 prime lenses.
      From my experience and from what I know, I don‘t think the lack of third party autofocus lenses is a problem. But I could be totally wrong obviously, I‘m no expert. People that want affordable lenses still have a great choice with all the quality f/2 lenses (23mm, 35mm, 50mm), the latest 16mm f/2.8 or the 18-55 f/2.8-4 kit lens which is plenty fast and high quality. And basically all their lenses, except the XC line, are optically amazing. There are only very few exceptions.

    If the lens didn't have strong barrel distortion and significant vignetting at f/1.4 it would be an Art instead of a Contemporary lens.
    Nevertheless for its price, sharpness such a wide lens is a bargain. For me it is the best lens for users of e-mount APS cameras who prefer architectural or landscape photography.
    For portraits the barrel distortion isn't flattering but that can be corrected afterwards digitally.

    I recently purchased this lens for my A6000. I think I there was something wrong with it though. It performed no better than my kit lens. I have the 18-105 and it was better. I even took a photo on my OnePlus 5 mobile for comparison and the mobile image was better. Finally there was a slight green hue some photos. Luckily I am getting my money back. I'm in two minds now whether to get another one or not. 🤔
