Unfortunately despite having one of the most active and best Workshops on steam, the mod manager of L4D2 is extremely outdated and buggy, and it'd be a relatively simple fix by Valve that would greatly strengthen the game's longevity but they have yet to actually touch that game for a very long time.

      That's something that has to be kept in mind for L4D and it's sequel. Neglecting that will lead to a fair amount of "Why is this here? What purpose does it serve?" and while playing Versus you'll know why; often it's a hiding spot or short cut for SI's whom want to ambush or a spot for zombies to spawn as their conditions are simplified in Versus mode compared to campaign. The most notable is the lack of a buffer zone for infected spawns: You can have zombies spawn right behind a door you're beside or behind light posts as long as they aren't seen by survivors. In regular play up to Advanced there's a notable buffer zone where zombies can't spawn to prevent ganks on players which is reduced greatly in advanced.
      TL:DR? *Versus mode*

    The reason the newspaper has Breen on it is because that model was originally made for Half Life 2 but was used as just a generic newspaper in pretty much all the other source games. You can find it in CS: Source, for example

  • @wolfcl0ck
    @wolfcl0ck Před 3 měsíci +219

    Most source engine games from after the orange box use combined models for both the viewmodel and world model as opposed to separate ones like in Half-Life 2, Portal, Counter-Strike Source, and the 2007 version of Team Fortress 2. Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2, as far as I recall, use combined models, which is why you can make out words on guns that other players are carrying, for instance. As far as the molotov goes, the interior stuff *is* liquid. They probably set the material to be opaque later on in development either for performance reasons or because transparent textures tend to be buggy. While Valve is also known for making elevator shafts for no reason (Portal,) the Left 4 Dead one is fully modeled for Versus mode. The newspaper is just lifted directly from Half-Life 2, hence Dr Breen. I believe you can also see mentions of the 7 hour war on that model.

      Combined models... so that's what the c_ stands for. Interesting.

    •  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Yes and no, you are talking about TF2, thats the one that got updated to do that, L4D still uses the split viewmodels, what is combined is the arms, so instead of having 4 versions of the view models with each of the characters hands the hands are a separared model wich is merged on top of the view models that have the weapon geometry and joint animations, this was later used in csgo too, and I had the idea of adding the same to gmod, so I proposed it when the gmod 13 update was being worked on and made most of the leg work adapting hl2, css and dods weapons view models to work the same, the gmod devs decided to call them c_ models, to me it was wrong because thats how they are called in tf2 and work in the oppsite way, like you described, they added to the confusion. The internal name in the game for this is called bonemerge, its used to add the weapons to the arms of the players in third person(since hl1) and npcs(since hl2), and hats in tf2, the tech is old, even sven coop could add the feature if they wanted to.

    I'm surprised you left out that the Menu Screen is a loadable level in the game.
    It's just the first level of No Mercy, but it's an odd fact that you can get the game to load it and walk around it. There's no safe room available to complete it as the full map isn't rendered though.
    Another funny thing is on No Mercy, the Humvee that's crashed into the apartment building will instakill you if you touch it. This is the humvee that's behind a fence that you normally can't get to by yourself.

      @JezMM Před 3 měsíci +6

      For clarification, I assume you're talking about the Xbox 360 version of L4D there, as the PC version uses a flat video file for the main menu background. What you say about the 3D main menu in the 360 version was true for Half-Life 2 etc as well though - if it's a "place" in the game being rendered in real time, it has to be a map, and all maps can be loaded and explored by nature of the source engine. The ones in Half-Life 2 tend to be little cut-out versions of the view they depict, so as soon as you go exploring beyond what is shown on the main menu background there isn't really anything to see.
      It's kind of strange they bothered to have a 3D main menu background for the 360 version in the first place, while the PC version used a video - surely it can only serve to lengthen the initial game loading time for players.

      @@TLuigi003 Possible, but looking at my Steam files on the PC version, the background main menu video is only 14mb, and the opening level map file is 21mb. The menu background map files for the HL2 games are about 5-10mb each so the L4D1 one is probably somewhere between 5-20mb assuming it cuts off outside of the player's view like the HL2 ones do. All of this is to say, would be less than a 10mb saving if that was the reason.
      Still possible, every little counts when you're cramming a big game onto a disc so it doesn't need a day 1 update to function (no idea if L4D1 does or not) but yeah.

    • @grn1
      @grn1 Před 3 měsíci

      @@JezMM Wouldn't be surprised if the non-updated version was more stable than the latest. I know the last few times I tried playing L4D2 on 360 it was horribly broken (voting didn't work, characters would randomly be downed or go into a glitched down state, Mercy Hospital was unbeatable because the door at the top of the elevator stopped working) and I don't think they ever bothered to fix it. Not sure how functional L4D1 is on console. PC versions still work as far as I know (it's been a few years since I've played L4D2 last but the community for it was still quite strong).
      As far as the live map thing goes it's possible that the actual size of the map ended up being smaller when compressed since it used parts of an existing map and omitting the extra components needed for video playback may have saved some space as well. It could also just be a thing they were experimenting with or some technical issues with the XBox and/or Source Engine that made playing videos in the background buggy. Another thought is that they may have intended to have random elements in the background like random zombies spawning and doing things (don't think they actually had something like that but it has probably been over a decade since I play L4D1).

    When the video ended I thought to myself "wait, that's it?." I feel like you could've gotten way more out of L4D, since we barely got anything outside of the first campaign.
    Here's a freebee: though you don't generally see it ingame unless you have a bad run in with a Tank (or a Charger in the sequel) the final map of the No Mercy campaign (and maybe the others as well, it's been a while since I've played the games) does not correctly show the Mercy Hospital according to what the players go through in the 4th map, specifically the section after the elevator.
    That area shows that the floor you end up on after the elevator was receiving renovations and thus has openings in which the players could be knocked out through to act as a final, 1HKO hurdle before reaching the end of the level.
    This construction section is not seen when observing the entire building, either before the statistics roll, getting sent flying or just by no clipping around the map.

    A nice little smorgasboard of the kind of stuff you can find out of bounds in L4D here and a great explanation of the 3D sky box in valve games too - friends and I would have tons of fun spawning enemies into the 3D sky box area (when it had solid ground at least) and being amused at the giant characters looming over us when we returned to the playable area afterwards. I've explored every nook and cranny of these games with noclip but the level of detail model stuff here was a really cool addition as I've never seen those before. Your idea about where the survivors go when on a rescue vehicle is spot on too - almost every finale has a little box for survivors to teleport too - though not all! Some finales teleport them back to the starting safe room instead. If the game is being a bit laggy, you can sometimes see this for a second in the first person view as the camera fades to black to switch to the ending cut-scene.
    One point of interest that wasn't covered here is in The Sacrifice campaign - noclipping out from the safe room at the end of chapter 2/the start of chapter 3 reveals that between map loads, the safe room actually changes orientation compared to the outdoors scenery - the outdoors that you exit into technically shouldn't be able to co-exist with the outdoors that you entered from in the previous map, even though it's hard to notice in gameplay. Another fun point of comparison would be "The Port" chapter on both The Sacrifice and The Passing. You'd expect them to more or less be the same as they're the same location within the story, but where The Sacrifice has a smaller playable space in the finale, they culled out a surprising amount of detail when you go exploring rather than just leaving the existing geometry and props out of sight.
    A little tip when you get to L4D2 - typing in "fogui" to the console brings up a little panel of options for disabiling fog and increasing draw distance etc. I really enjoyed noclipping around these games myself but L4D2 was surprisingly hard to find the 3D skybox models on for whatever reason until I figured out how to disable fog and increase how far the game rendered, etc. You might already know about it because you're clearly aware of fullbright commands for clarity in this video, but I did find L4D2 a lot less friendly to exploration due to the fogging/lighting choices they made in the game.

    To clarify why they keep what would usually be a skybox in the scene: from my understanding, they have a separate camera rendering the skybox content that mirrors the position and rotation of the main camera. This allows the environment to feel “real” and have scale when you move up and down through a level. When you use a painted skybox this image is easier to figure out and makes the environment feel fake, even if you don’t notice why.
    They use this technique often to make the scale of spaces feel very large also, like in Portal 2. Games don’t like massive spaces (floating point numbers get dodgy) so this allows for the appearance of huge environments without needing to deal with all of the problems this would create.

      I agree but he, unfortunately, probably needs to cover recent stuff for algorithmic reasons. If a game isn't currently popular in the algorithm it's hard to get the video pushed though larger creators that often feature different games can usually get away with trying new things which then pushes the algorithm to change what it's recommending. Probably also helps to live-stream different games since live-streams are pushed by a different algorithm that gives them a bit more weight. CZcams's insistence on beating Tic Toc doesn't help either (Game Theory did a great video on about how shorts are going to kill CZcams). While Shesez is a decent sized creator he just doesn't have the weight to push the algorithm around, even the largest creators who can affect the algorithm feel pressured by it.

    Just wanted to say myself and others would gladly accept a 15 episode series of you doing this for each stage. And while I actually love back for blood as much as I love Left 4 Dead and vastly prefer world war z over Left 4 Dead I just know that there are so many secrets.

      I would've loved a 15 episode series as well! There's so much content in this game that it's disappointing to hear Shesez say that both Left 4 Dead games were almost combined together to make one video. Oh well... Maybe one day Shesez or someone else will cover more out of bounds secrets in a similar format.

    If I had to guess as to the reason for the projected skybox and tiny world under the map, I would guess it's to be able to put high quality models far away (like the Hospital) where they would otherwise be outside the draw distance.

    Finally the white pupils are explained. All these years I thought I was going crazy or that there was a bug. I can't fathom why Valve made Zoe's low poly model this way.

    • @ThePensiveWalrus
      @ThePensiveWalrus Před 3 měsíci +4

      The reason low poly models are so cursed is that they aren't made by people. In modern games they are almost always made by algorithms that try to remove polygons from the full detail model. Low poly models never seen by the player up close, so it isn't worth the time to handcraft the low detail models.
      If a human were making a low poly model by hand, they would never leave an open slit in the mouth. An algorithm that is removing polygons from existing models would simplify the face, leaving an opening for the mouth while removing the mouth cavity. These models have similar issues with the eyes. A human making a model at that level of detail would make the eyes a flat texture on the outside of the face, but an algorithm reducing an existing model would simplify the face and the eyeballs, leaving fully modeled low poly eyes that don't fit right in the low poly eye sockets.

    I'm guessing the extra geometry inside of the bottle at 10:24 is used for a shader effect to simulate the liquid. It's basically a piece of geometry that'll get warped/streched by the shader code to simulate a fluid moving around inside of it. When done right it's a great looking visual effect that's not very costly to render.

    7:05 I’m pretty sure Bungie did this with their skyboxes as well, and I’m certain other companies must do it as well. I know this because I remember my friends and I spending hours in Halo 2 glitching our bodies under the Burial Mounds map, since the skydome model is located just under a certain part of the map, you’d see your Spartan’s body in the sky like a colossal ragdoll, it was hilarious.

    • @grn1
      @grn1 Před 3 měsíci

      Another comment I read said that both Valve and Bungie came up with the idea of projected skyboxes independently around the same time as each other. There are some differences in how the 2 engines work like the Source Engine needing a camera model to watch the miniature (which apparently helps with rotating the projected image to match the players rotation and make things feel more lifelike) but the core concept is the same.
