  • The Toyota Tacoma is an icon in the midsize truck segment, though it's also feeling pretty long in the tooth by now. Last updated in 2016 with a facelift in 2020, we spent a week with the 2023 #ToyotaTacoma to see how it stood up against the new Chevy Colorado and Nissan Frontier. And of course, we got some Toyota Tacoma towing time in (say that four times fast) as well with Jake's (empty) enclosed trailer.

    I have a 2021 TRD ORDC 4x4 with the automatic transmission, it’s lifted 1.5 inch with by pass fox shocks on all 4 corners , I do tow my car behind it occasionally with total weight around 5700# I always use the Ect, and keep it in 4th gear unless it’s flat straight highway than I will upshift it to 5th gear , it pulls good even going up hills , empty I get 24MPG on highway and 15 mpg when towing my car behind it . I really like this truck it’s like a Swiss Army knife it didn’t do everything perfect but it does do everything good , there is no perfect truck out there that’s why I bought this Tacoma it’s just a good old honest truck that’s very reliable, now with 42k miles on the ODO I can’t see myself driving another truck , 42k miles down and 258k miles to go !

    Seemed to do pretty well all things considered. Think modern shoppers and pickup drivers are a bit spoiled in the power and torque department. This is a bit on the lower end of what I’d like to see but certainly the new turbocharged midsize trucks have plenty for what I’d be towing or hauling. Will be interesting to see the new 2.4T Tacoma and rumored hybrid max powertrain.

    Thank you for the in-depth review.. I have a "23" Base 4x4 V6 Crew S/B and love it, even at 5'11!! Would of liked a driver's side grab handle, but ehh.. Never thought of all the key points you touched on, awesome!..
    That said, I've had it just over a year, almost 10K on her stock everything except for the Amazon 6" running boards. Thinking of getting a travel trailer (Enore ROG 16rb) dry-3142lbs, tongue is 454lbs.. Other than a "weight distribution hitch" (which brand??), what else would I need?.. Oh, passengers 500lbs and stuff, let's say another 2-300, "maybe"??

    • @OutMotorsports
      @OutMotorsports  Před 5 měsíci

      Glad you enjoyed! Having a WDH is a great idea, we use a BlueOx TrackPro and really like it. You will want to pick the one rated for the weight you're towing (roughly) which in this case would be the 0650 rated for up to 600 lbs of tongue weight:
      amzn.to/3whrAln
      That one includes a 2" ball, so make sure it works with your trailer. You might be able to swap to a larger 2 5/16" ball if needed but don't take our word for it.

    My beef with the TRD Off Road, after towing a Jeep XJ on a u-haul car transporter is the brakes. They were a bit weak. Overall though, it did very well on a road trip from Miami to Orlando.

    • @OutMotorsports
      @OutMotorsports  Před 8 měsíci

      Those U-Haul trailers are a bit more taxing than an open trailer you'd own yourself... 2,200 lbs empty and mediocre surge brakes to help stop. You'd have had a better time with a lighter trailer that had electric brakes on it, though the U-Haul use case is a popular one for a ton of people.

    I can’t get behind the love behind these trucks. So cramped inside and if space is the ultimate luxury then full size trucks offer better value aside from perhaps resale.

      This generation of the Tacoma was an update and not a new architecture and it shows. The Taco illustrates what was good about Toyota however, in 2023 it illustrates how Toyota has lost its way. Reliability is the entry point for most modern vehicles today and it is hard to buy a horrible car from a reliability perspective. Meanwhile, the Toyota strategy of milking an architecture to death exposes the company to selling non-competitive vehicles for years (relying on reputation). A new architecture Tacoma is being tested and should be announced in 24 alongside a new 4Runner. Toyota needs to wake up and be truly innovative as the competition is very attractive.
      Those complaining about the current drivetrain will be dealing with a 4-cylinder turbo and 8/10 speed in the next generation.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP Před rokem

      I like midsize trucks. Went from a Tacoma to an F-150 and while in some respects I do like the extra space, I kinda miss having something a bit more compact (even when talking about interior dimensions).

    • @chrispnw2547
      @chrispnw2547 Před rokem

      @@ALMX5DP There is an industry term: 'surprise and delight' and Jeep, Chrysler, and Dodge have consistently done this over the years in terms of features. The RAM EV prototype with the seats on tracks and the ability to apportion space to support a third row of rear jump seats is incredible while still supporting a midgate design.
      RAM needs to reintroduce a Dakota to compete with the Tacoma and Ranger.

    If your going to tow something that big for safety use a 3/4 ton v-8 or diesel. I had a 23' Grady white gulf stream and dual axel EZ loader 7,500 pound cap. The boat was close to 62,000 #. I tried it with my 1/2 ton v-8 . Didn't feel safe. The 3/4 F250 was perfect. I would tow carefully and accidents in 30 years of towing my boats from 17' to 23'. You should never been in a hurry when towing.

    I get the whole idea that Tacoma is kind of old school in 2023 but it's so simple and "if it works don't fix it" and still DIY friendly. So post apocalypse scenario, where's your nearist dealership?

    • @OutMotorsports
      @OutMotorsports  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I kind of hate this argument only because you can have "simple" while still having a vehicle that's been thoughtfully designed. The outgoing Tacoma just kinda... isn't that to me. The powertrain doesn't work well for the vehicle, it's an ergonomic mess, and tall people don't fit. Other simple/basic vehicles have a similar ethos to this Tacoma but are more thoughtful in their execution.
