- Around 1988 WTVK Channel 26 in Knoxville, TN had a series of videos they did on country music. They did one on Hank Sr and the story of his last day. Did he die in Grainger County or Knoxville, TN? Featured in this video is my 1949 Cadillac. I portray the driver "Carr". I think I was 17 when this was filmed. Channel 26 contacted me at the time about doing the re-creation video because of my car. I wasn't paid a dime and it took about 8 hours of filming time. I didn't care I just wanted to show off my car and be on TV.
Yes, I know Hank's driver drove a 1952 Caddy. When this was filmed there was not one available so they used my 1949 Series 62. - Zábava
How did you get that caddy at 17 years old @radio1342 ? When I was 17 I drove a beat up 64 AMC Rambler where if I made too fast of a left turn the right door would fly open, lol.
Crazy story behind that one... I actually won that car from a radio station in a grand prize drawing. I kept it for about 15 years but by that time I was married and moved away and it wasn't doing me any good sitting in my dad's garage covered up hundreds of miles away from where I lived. So I had him sell it for me. I hated to part with it and now that I am middle aged I'd love to have it back
What?
I paid $50 for my first car @ 14yrs old in 1969 a clean 1955 Fleetwood Cadillac

Hank was and still is one of the greatest Country Music Singers and Song Writer of all time
Hank was an incredible writer and singer. I remember when he died. I use to sing his songs at school. I was 12 yrs old, I couldnt believe what had happened to him. My grandfather was a good fiddle player,Hank tried to get him to join his band. My grandfather told him he couldnt because my grandmother was dying from cancer and they had 12 kids to be cared for. Jan. 1,1953,what a loss.
Somewhere out there, someone is just discovering the music of Hank Williams.
HANK WILLIAMS SR WAS AND STILL IS THE GREATEST COUNTRY MUSIC SINGER AND SONGWRITER THEY EVER WAS AND EVER WILL BE.
Hank, Buddy and Elvis....all legends. These days we're running pretty short on Legend Material.
Yeah...that's "bottom line" pithy...
closest thing we have to the next great country singer is sturgill simpson...but TRASHVILLE won't give him the time of day... thank goodness for CZcams
Don’t forget Janis Joplin, jimmy Hendrix, Jim Morrison and George Jones
I nominate Ronnie McDowell,he is full of talent: songwriting. Singing. Painting. He can to it all!!!! That's Mr. Voice!!!!
@@whodatmafia2823 the possum all day...best ever
I know this is old but I have to say, Hank wasn't on any kind of Probation to be allowed back on the Opry, he was bigger than the Opry and they realized that they had ripped their drawers when they let him go. Hank didn't need the Opry the Opry needed Hank!
He died 10 before I was born . My Dad would play Hank !! I had 2 discs replaced in my neck ( DDD) and got fibromyalgia from it . It is debilitating 🤦♀️😖 day in and day out . He is no longer suffering. He probably had other medications in him ( not sure about alcohol that day ) that mixed with morphine 😲 . His grandson is the spitting image of him 😲 and his daughter looks like him too . I wish all 3 would get along , and make some music together. That would really make Hank Sr happy . I just can’t believe he was 29 . Self medicating chronic pain and alcohol really took a toll on him 😢
Hank is country music's only true king , he accomplished in in a short 5 year career, what other artists accomplished in decades .
Thanks for posting the video .
He accomplished in 5 years what most artist NEVER accomplish in a lifetime.
Hank is a Shining life that left too soon.
Not alot of listeners for such a legend. He was elvis'
Predecessor. A REAL
Thanks for posting, I saw this many years ago and glad it's available.
rest in peace Hank Williams , the greatest singer of the 50's ...
40's and 50's.
This was friggin awesome. I remember clearly the first time this aired on 26. I was so intrigued with the idea that Hank Williams could have died going up Rutledge pike. The old 11W Drive In is just 2 miles or so from my parents house and the marquee is pictured in the story at least twice. It's funny, I drive by that spot almost every day and think about that story every time. What a pleasure finding it on here. Thanks for uploading it.
No problem. I (kind of) knew Bill Stewart's wife Rebecca (who worked at WIMZ). He was working on this series and needed an old Caddy. She had him get in touch with me. It isn't the same kind of car (and not the same year) but it was all they had to work with to make the story work. It took us several different days and locations to get it all.
Hank Williams was last seen alive at the Skyline Drive in in Hill Top, WV, Carr stopped at a service station in Oak Hill,WV a little later and Williams was unresponsive. The station attendant called the local law enforcement and Williams was taken to the hospital 2 blocks away where he was pronounced dead. Tyree Funeral Home, directly across the street from the hospital took care of Hank Sr. and drove his body back to Nashville. That's the true story, and it is documented.
@@danwingo7512 I think he was last seen alive in Bristol VA in front of the Burger Bar.

Whats wrong with this version of the facts?
hank sr. died in a 1953 caddy at the age of 29 i think may him and his songs live for ever
Correct. Not a '49.
Yes and HOW MANY times do I have to say they when this was filmed they could only find a 49? Do people read the description?

No mention of their stop in Bristol VA.
Hank's death is shrouded in mystery. The story don't add up . The wounds on Hank's body - welt on the forehead, bruising on the groin and needle marks.
Whered you hear that? Im interested
If you ever get the chance read the paperback"Sing a sad song".

It's the only book that i ever read that i broke down and cried.

Truly died.
Hank Williams died in Oak Hill, Wva.
Nah in Ohio
How can anyone know exactly where Hank died.?
@@jasonhiggins8909 He didn't make it to Ohio he made it to Oakhill WV but where he died between TN and Oakhill is unknown
How do you administer a shot without knowing if he had other meds or drugs in his system? Dr. Should have been more investigated as this just seemed to be hushed quickly. Rip Hank.
Ockie Ditchbank , I see what you mean. My parents and family we're from Appalachia, and so you're right. Its so sad though
Ockie Ditchbank , very true
My guess would be hundred dollar bills well back then maybe fifty dollar bills
The doctor was a fake !
The doctor was a fake !
The autopsy report says there was only a 'trace' amount of alcohol found in HW's system. So, this is false reporting, he did not die of over drinking alcohol. He died of respiratory failure and a blocked ventricle due to morphine, heroin, and Chloral hydrate, a sedative, also called a hypnotic. Chloral hydrate slows the activity of your central nervous system. This medicine has both fast-acting and long-lasting sedative effects. The autopsy also stated that HW had been beaten very recently. He had evidence of being kicked in the groin, a cracked rib and bruises all about the body, a huge welt protruding from his head, a few lacerations and a very recently bandaged hand. No explanation has ever been given for why he was beaten or when or by whom. He was born with Spina Bifida, a very painful spine condition. He was also an alcoholic from age 11. His father had PTSD, which they called shell-shock back then, and was confined to a V.A. Hospital after WWI.
I'd like to know why no one talks about Charles Carr getting a speeding ticket that night and that he also appeared in front of a judge and paid that ticket. Who else saw Charles Carr that night? And what about the supposed hitch hiker Charles Carr said he picked up? He was said (by Carr) to be a soldier. What happened to him? Why was he never found? Why was there no investigation into HW's death? Beaten about the head, injected with morphine, unconscious when put into the car, driven to the next gig in an ice storm? What happened to his hat? It was said he only had a t-shirt on when he was taken from the car. Where was his shirt? Something is just not right about this whole thing.
No one will ever know, but you have a lot of true facts.
At age 29 hank would have been just another young punk to him if he was Sheriff at the time. Hindsight is 20/20
Yea his Cadillac is a 1952 Convertible series 62 powder blue. 😳
Yes, but as stated when this was filmed the only car they had access to was my black 49. I had no control over the story, I just supplied them with my car. At 17 years old I just wanted to show off my car and be on TV.
Very cool!
to sad, to sad ! :(
He passed through my home town of Bluefield W.Va think about three a.m.and stopped at the dough boy lunch and Hank never got out of the car so he could have been dead than They got a new driver here,a cab driver by the last name of Surface they continued on thirty miles to Oak Hill W.Va where he was pronounced dead!
Doctors back then were absolutely clueless.
Damn trooper should have checked on Hank
Do you have any more vintage newscasts from your area?
No, sorry that is the only one I have from an old VHS tape.
He died on the road. I don’t know why, but somehow I know this.
Here is a true fact. Hank died somewhere along the highway in the month of December the year 1952. But as is common it is not official until a corner can pronounce the death so that was not until January 1953. He and I were born the same month and day. I was just a few weeks over three months old when he went. I do feel a connection even to the point that my dad looked a lot like him. No relations just a weird set of events.
omg, I HATE to keep explaining this: Hank SR was born with spinal issues. he was on pain management his whole life. he became a very heavy user late in his young life. they stopped at a hotel to see the house Dr and get a morphine shot for his back, aka addiction. this is were it gets fishy, true story goes Hank n driver stopped at a road side tavern/bar where there was reportedly a fight of some kind. if u research the corners report uld see that Hank had severe contusions to his face, body, tentacles, FACTS! story goes that Hank, hi on morphine and drunk as always was hitting on a local guys girl, so the local tough guys jumped him and kicked his ass. the local law man came and cuz of who he was allowed the driver, a teenager, to put Hank in the car and get the hell outa there. I've researched this topic EXTREMELY IN DEPTH , and theese are the facts as best as anyone could find so many years later. sadly it's another young man dead in his prime, due to drugs booze n women. not my opinion, the FACTS as best I am able to peace em together after so long ago...don't BELIVE me please, research for URSELF n u to will see...

There's a conspiracy theory that he actually died at the Andrew Johnson Hotel, and they just snuck his body out to delay the death announcement.
Noel Halwick Noel harwick I read the other replys to your comment ...all I'm gonna say is I've never done any research on Hank's death but I knew everything you said in your comment ...I'm sorry guy but you haven't researched anything you have just repeated what you've heard on TV ...

Have you ever talked to Jerry Rivers or Don Helms? I have and I know a little more than you do. I don't know everything though. Charles was the only one that knew what really happened and he is dead now. That's the bottom line.
We’re talking about Hank Williams Williams Senior father and Hank Williams Junior
Heart failure at 29 yrs old, what's wrong with this picture. :/
HE OVER DOSED.
This is kind of bizarre.
💜
The doctor who administered the shot, had gotten his medical diploma through the mail.
Dr.Nick
So he OD'd on the shot the Dr gave him.
EXACTLY.
In addition to morphine Hank was taking Chloral Hydrate which is a powerful medication that was administered to insomniacs!! One side effect of Chloral Hydrade is it causes heart palpitations!! Most likely the morphine in addition to the chloral hydrate caused heart failure!!
That’s legend
Hank was born with a condition called Spina Bifida where the vertebrae does not fuse together properly and there are gaps. As he got older his back deteriorated to the point he was in excruciating pain. Also factor in as a teenager he tried being a rodeo performer and was bucked by a horse while attempting bronc riding. Instead of going to a real doctor perhaps an orthopedic he went to quacks who gave him shots of narcotics. He was given codeine then morphine. Anyone who has been prescribed narcotics whether it is oxycodene, oxycotitin, codeine, morphine or opium have experienced addiction. They are also lethal as they can cause internal hemorrhaging which can lead to heart failure. Hank more than likely received a shot of pure morphine which caused internal hemorrhaging and heart failure. The question then becomes was Hank murdered? Yes. Hank decided to receive medical assistance from a quack or quacks but was under false pretense that these quacks were actual doctors. The guy who administered Hank the final shot was later arrested for operating as a doctor without a license and spent time in jail. Another mystery concerns during the last ride Charles somewhere along the ride allegedly picked up a soldier who was hitchhiking. When Charles was stopped by the law enforcement officer no mention was made about the soldier yet several sources including Charles the chauffeur driving Hank mention a soldier being along for part of the ride. If so what was the soldiers name and where was he picked up and where was he dropped off?

Didn't they stop at Bristol Tn, to change drivers, I also thought they stopped at a Bus Stop in Bristol and the driver asked hank if he wanted something to eat at the Burger Bar next to the Bus Stop.
toyman81 This is the same account that I’ve heard as well. Bristol was the last place that Hank was seen alive.
@@Photograph1974 Actually it was Bluefield WV
Something still strange about this death 4 who was with him outside of this jail.
He was given medication he shouldn't have taken with his heart condition. But they weren't aware of the condition and this was the 1940s.
Hank had spina bifida (open spine) which caused him great pain, and back then, doctors were (relatively) reckless about prescribing medicines. I never knew he had a heart condition.
It was 1953
HE WAS DRINKING TOO ON TOP OF THE PAIN MEDS.

Too young to perish!!! I'd never thought of such tragedy!!! The walmart boy brought me to listen to Mr. Hanks music.. I heard he was racist but I don't care. He's an American Classic & I adore his "Radio Singing". I'm in my early 40's, his music was worth more than what's on the DC! Take care, on the note 'settin the woods on fire'

It was a 52 Cadillac convertible, not a 49 sedan.
Yes, I know and it has been discussed here multiple times and listed in the description that a 49 was the only one that was available to film this on no budget. It isn't for historical purposes, I mainly put it up so my family could see it.
He died in West Virginia
He was found dead in Oak Hill, West Virginia. I've lived in Fairmont all my life. I don't know exactly how far Oak Hill is from where I live, but I'm guessing more than 120 miles. I wonder where he actually died.
i bet he was dead when they were stopped by the cops doesn't it take about 6 hours for rigor mortis to set in
If those cops Aetna stopped him and arrest him over $35.50 they probably would have made it and got some hell

This is different from what I read about his death. Read Hank had stopped at some restaurant on his way to where ever, did a song or two, then headed down the road on his on and apparently lost control of his car on the snowy road. Thanks for posting the video.

The caddy in the video is a 1949. I know because it was my car. However the caddy Hank was in was a 52. This is a recreation and a 49 is all that was available for filming.

Why was they in oak hill WV? When 77 takes u strait to Canton Ohio?
I-77 was not built in that part of the country until the mid 1970's.
They would have passed through Oak Hill on the way to Charleston, WV where they would have picked up Route 21 to go north.

29 with a 17yr old Driver??? #Fishy
Yep! Carr was 17 at the time he was driving for Hank. When we made the video Carr wouldn't talk to us.
I think more likely Hank wanted a driver due to his failing health, since he basically drank himself to death and his health had been taking the fast route to the bottom of the hill for some time when it happened.
Bostic Darryl 17 wasn't strange for a driver back then .I got my drivers license at the age of 14 and did most of the driving for my family
I wander if carr could have killed Hiram or something else. There a lot of 'fishy' stuff to the real story!
Hank died in none of these places! he filled up his car in my dad's hometown of Tazewell, Tenn. where he died a few miles down the road.
No one knows where he died the only thing for sure is where he was found dead and that was in West Virginia
Tazewell, Virginia
Hank SR died in Oak Hill West Virginia on U S 19
George Withrow no Hank was pronounced dead in Oak Hill.. Rigor mortis had already set in. Hank was last seen alive in Bluefield Wv
Actually the interstate between Bluefield and Oak Hill WV is I-19 so George Withrow is half correct.
It's really US 19. If an interstate connects those two towns, it would be I-77. I live in Fairmont, West Virginia, and US 19 goes through my town
Thanks for that. I never knew where he was last seen alive. Undoubtedly, his death is recorded in Fayette County, WV, Oak hill's county. I live in Fairmont, WV, maybe 200 miles north of there.
He was found dead there but he did not die there he was dead long before he was found dead because his body was already getting stiff and it takes a hour or so for that to start to happen
