I'm with Melissa - go with the lighter ceiling for the smaller space and then dark trim accents will really pop! Also, I really enjoyed the podcast. I had no idea about FLDS and the Jeffs story. She's a strong woman to share the general weirdness and trauma that was her childhood. Your description of Blue cracked me up! I love the fact that Blue's mom came to your place to help him be comfortable in a new place.

After flipping houses for 10 years, I would go with creamy white. With the walls sloping down, creamy would give you more light reflection maximizing the light inside. Good call Melissa!

The wood ceiling outside acts like a giant sponge and is constantly absorbing/ releasing ambient moisture in the air.
The best thing for the outside would be to relieve the ceiling( a 1/2 expansion space all the way around and a 1x applied over the face as a picture frame). That would allow seasonal moisture expansion without causing the buckling you are experiencing. You could also use trim head screws( GRK that use a #10 stardrive bit) thru the face into the rafters. A screw hold the boards infinity better than the blind nails at an angle.
The ceiling inside of Gabby, like the ceiling inside the main house is thermally balanced so they move much slower. Like a door that is to tight in a jamb that sticks/rubs in the non conditioned times( early spring when you shut the heat off and re introduce moist outside air by opening windows to get fresh outside air)but then when the air is turned on for the hot summer season( pulling the outside humidity out of the interior air that is allowed in with open windows). The door almost in the course of a day or two goes back to opening again with no rubbing.

Yes I totally agree. I did my front porch ceiling like you described and I miter cut the joints too; so the tongue n groove can expand and contract due to moisture.
Yeah, I'm no expert, but I grew up in an old house and owned one later and wondered about the expansion and shrinking when they put it up. We had a bathroom door that wouldn't stay shut 6 months of the year and stuck shut the other six months. We want to build our next home and would prefer a steel frame building for this other reason.

In total agreement with/ Mr. McGinn. As you saw on your ceiling the accumulated expansion and contraction is approx a ½”+- across the expanse of the ceiling. Each plank absorbs moisture and swells in both width and length. It also will shrink again when conditions dry out. Room for this cycle needs to be built into the the design of the build i.e. the frame Mr. McGinn suggests. Wood is a living material. It moves seasonally.

You definately want lighter colors in smaller spaces. With that said though, they make light colored pine shiplap that you can do either way. It's double sided. One way is tongue and Grove and the other way is shiplap.

If you do shiplap, I would recommend using a “undercoater/sealer” on all six side to prevent warping. Again, make sure the moisture is 12% or less when sealing the boards.

@@GoodSimpleLiving My thought is your best bet is always with a "natural" wood. Shiplap, in my opinion, is a great accent wall in a bedroom and/or bathroom.

As a Painter for 25 years, I can recommend making the ceiling a lighter colour because the ceiling is a lot lower than your main house, a dark ceiling will make it feel a lot smaller and maybe a bit claustrophobic so if you use a light colour on the ceiling it’ll make it feel bigger
YOU NEED TO LOOK AT THE SWELLED BOARDS THE SAME AS A HARDWOOD FLOOR. you need to leave room on the sides of any plank system for expansion when the humidity goes up. if each one of those wide planks expands just 1/16th of an inch that means you will need at least a 1-inch gap on the sides for every 16 planks. by just trimming down the ones that were removed you will end up with a gap when summer comes and the humidity goes down. the proper way to fix this issue is to remove the planks on the edges (in width) and make sure there is a gap. making things tight and going without trim may look nice, but it will cause failures as time goes by.
Your buckling is the t+g. It may have been very dry when you put it up and now with the moisture increasing it is expanding. You need to increases allow for this expansion. expansion expansion

I'm right there with Jeremys back pain. I could see it in his face. Bless. I did something similar a few years back right at the start of the season so couldn't give it the attention it required. Heat packs and stretches got me through till I could visit the chiropractor. A few light massages from Melissa couldn't hurt, just saying.

I gasped when I read the headline. It reminded me of the moment 10 years ago when my six-month-old oak floor buckled. A few days ahead of the “pop,” the floor felt funny to my bare feet, but that sudden eruption pop when the pressure became too much was scary. It was eventually fixed and is still level, but I remember that OMG depressing feeling when you discover your home has staged a coup. Y’all handled the stress well.
Painting both sides of your ceiling boards helps keep it from excessive swelling.
As soon as they showed the buckle, I thought that they probably neglected to stain/seal the other side of planks before installing them. Natural wood has to be sealed on all sides, and even then, it will expand and contract. It's best not to use natural wood products outdoors, there are plenty of other options. I hope they don't have issues down the road with the rest of their soffits, but if I remember correctly, they did finish those boards on both sides before installing them.

This is something that most DIY's either don't know about or do. Very important, along with sealing the end grain of just about all boards.
@@colleencourtney4484 Wood is a natural product, which means it will be broken down over time by nature. Even trees rot and get damaged over time. That's why pressure treated materials are used for decks and outdoor structures, but the life of those structures is not indefinite, without a lot of maintenance. Generally, pressure treated wood in direct contact with the ground only has a lifespan of about 40 years. Burning and oiling wood for siding and other outdoor construction is definitely a viable alternative to other finishes and/or non-wood construction products. On the 'My Self Reliance' YT channel, Shawn used this technique quite often for his cabin builds. If you ever watched an episode of 'the Waltons,' whenever John is making fence posts in his sawmill, part of the process was dipping one end of the finished posts in hot tar, which was the preservative for the end of the post that would go in the ground, so it wouldn't rot as quickly. Sorry to be long-winded, the whole point is that raw wood will not hold-up over time in an outdoor application. Even under cover, like this porch ceiling that buckled, changes in temperature and humidity will cause shrinking and swelling that can cause real problems, especially if all sides of the wood products are not properly sealed.
White ceiling is good because it makes a place more light and the space seems bigger.
The house will swell and shrink over the seasons.

Good luck with your new horse getting along with your present horse, you must have been a bit apprehensive when the two horses first got together. Jeremy careful with your back, it takes two people building a property, always a light ceiling in a small room to make it lighter.

I live in a small home. The ceiling was dark wood. I replaced it with a creamy shiplap, and my home feels larger and brighter. Yes, go with a lighter ceiling.

the wood under your outside area is buckling because it's absorbing moisture and expanding. If it keeps happening you may have to uninstall it, narrow it down and put larger gaps between each piece to allow it to expand without buckling.

She mentioned in a previous video that she wanted a separation in the living areas. To create a different feeling in gabby. I understand what you’re saying, it’s a part of their homestead so matching would be nice. However, I think she wants to have some fun decorating in a different style. They have very good taste so whichever way they go I’m sure it’ll look fabulous!

I reskinned my shed door with tongue and groove and each winter it does the same thing. All down to seasonal wood movement. You need to have a bigger expansion gap at the end of the row. Something I needed to do.
I would pickle a wood ceiling so you can still see the grains. Brush on Pickling
Mix 1 part white latex primer-sealer with 3 parts water. Using a 4-inch brush, paint on a patch of the pickling solution. Tip: When pickling soft woods like pine, apply a water-based wood conditioner first, then sand lightly to allow the pickling to take evenly.
Ceiling color: My personal preference is actually more towards bright white. Because I need high contrast lighting in order to be able to read without to much effort. With my eye-sight I have a very hard time reading with warm-white light. So a bright white ceiling helps to “distribute” the light without uneven blinding spots.

You know you can make them saw horses sturdier if you connect them with 2×4's in the slots supplied for it. It will make it a lot easier. Great job on the repair.

Your outdoor ceiling boards are buckling because you probably installed them when they were dry. Then comes the rainy season/snow and they adsorb moisture and expand. You should install them in winter when they're internally moistened and you'll only have them shrink in the summer when dry. Then the following winter they'll tighten up again just like they were when you installed them.
Oh how awful it was to see you had a problem with your porch roof. So glad Jeremy was able to fix it. I think it looks awesome. I like the white ceiling with the wood accents would look amazing. Melissa with how you planned walls and colors in you home, whatever you decide will turn out beautifully. Blue is beautiful. Reminds me of my horse I had as a teenager.

I'm with Jeremy. We used prefinished 6" wide pine end-matched car siding. You don't have to finish it and you don't have to end your cuts on a truss. Very easy to install. Best of luck.

You were initially correct to cut the back of the groove off the boards. What you need now is to also seal the back of the boards with a waterproof sealer. To make the fit you only need a little time on the table saw. Cut the board back to the required width on the top edge, then come back and clip out the backside. It only takes one horizontal cut and one vertical cut. You just have to lower the blade so it rips out the board from the bottom up till it is the same as the prior groove. Next, put the board up on the edge of the saw and run it through the saw to clip off that chunk. That will leave you with the necessary overlay and the groove to slot in without having to work it around the other groove.

Brighter colours for sure it'll open it up especially being a small space. The decorate with the colours you want. But for the room it's self, the lighter the better

Wood movement! Moisture makes them expand. The ends of the boards where threads or splinters meet act like straws and absorb moisture like a sponge. Paint the ends with a sealer to help prevent the swelling and expanding. Gaps are needed to allow for swelling in outside woodwork.
I think the shiplap with white or off white paint is going to look amazing and a great choice for that smaller space.

Good luck guys. The cracks you heard while using hydraulics to fix your veranda, one of whose legs had collapsed, were now the coatings that were causing you problems.

Use a grinder with a ceramic tile cutting wheel so you don't have to disassemble the siding and use moulding mounted to the house and not the roof so you get expansion and contractions without buckling. It keeps a neat appearance as well
I personally like the wood look. While the rooms are smaller making the rooms darker, The big window will bring more light in the rooms.
You must leave an inch or two to allow for expansion . A two inch gap around the perimeter is a must. When the wood expands and has no where to go it buckles. The put up trim to cover the gap.
always go white for ceilings unless you have crazy high (like 12+ feet high) ceilings. Darker makes the space feel smaller and absorbs a lot of light making the space feel dimmer.
Quite simple really. Framing shrinks in the winter in really cold dry weather. That's why the cracks opened up in the beam. People assume their house would expand in the winter. Its the opposite in areas like the Northwest.
Thats why its very important to keep your lumber dry during the build.
I think the white ceiling be better, darker will make the room seem closed in, also as much as I love wood I’m not sure the younger generation do. White is easier to combine other soft furnishings, more modern.

since the space is so small I would go with shiplap all white with a natural/darker wood beam down the middle. White always makes things look bigger and brighter..
I agree, the lighter ceiling will give the room a larger feel especially with the ceiling so low on the sides.
Ceiling: Pickling. Either white, or take the wall color... Convert to oil-base and cut it with thinner to get an opaque stain to your satisfaction.. You should still see the grain through it... Then top with satin varnish for a primo finish. Still wood, not paint, but very much a blended, less 'woody' look. And it's old school. Works with the cabin look you already have.

Thank Gd she found the strength to walk away and save her children. As for the ceiling in Gabby, I hope you go with Shiplap. We have a home built in 1865 and a Carriage house built in 1810 which is now my office downstairs and a lovely apartment upstairs. The ceiling is low where it meets the walls. We were faced with the same decision. Our ceilings downstairs are all the original tongue and groove dark wood. When we finished the upstairs we were going to continue with the same type of ceiling to make it uniform to the rest of the building. After a few rows we realized it would be a terrible mistake. We removed the wood and went with shiplap on the ceiling and dry wall on the walls. Everything upstairs is off white and the lighter color ceiling opened up the space. Good luck and I’m sure it will be beautiful whatever you decide. @Good Simple Living.

I have a prefinished pine car siding ceiling in my great room stained the trim in the room in a little darker brown looks good doesn’t clash. Best thing about a pine ceiling is you will never have to paint it. Worst part is that it will darken over time. It’s been five years and i have never seen the T&G boards buckle like your outside overhang did. I also have he same boards on the outside 10’x50’ open porch and they never have buckled either in those same five years.
Absolutely a ceiling the same color as the walls because not only is the space small but the ceilings are low on the sides. Then do a big faux wood beam across the peak to bring the eye upward and make the ceiling look taller and more grand.
Glad it wasn’t to hard to fix your ceiling. I agree with Melissa, creamy white ceiling, then you can compliment it with whatever other colors you like.
I have done both shiplap stained and “off white”. If you’re doing white walls then stain the shiplap. It warms and cozy’s up the feel of rooms. And the ceilings are touchable at the 6’ height so stained will stay cleaner.
A lighter ceiling is the way to go particularly as the side walls are lower than your house. A dark ceiling will subdue the room particularly when is low light conditions outside. Use dark accents to frame the lighter areas and bring in the colours from the house.
I would go with the lighter toned ceiling. The wood ceiling would look fabulous but it would feel like it is falling down on you. It would make the room feel smaller and closed in. You could put the wood up and safe a light whitewash finish on the pine boards. Best of both worlds.

The pine would be beautiful. The woods don’t have to match. It would still look nice. I love the pine look.
If wood is not fully dry it will warp and buckle after time, even some woods will split and crack as it dries. With that wood outside like that, it suck up moisture from the air as the weather heats up and cools down, So you may need to use water seal on it to help keep it dry.
Yes, the lighter ceiling in that space will look bright and airy. You can always put up some faux beams for accents.
I am a Interior Design honor graduate. I must agree, white ceiling for sure to make the space look bigger than it is. The wood would bring everything down.
Creamy white will open the space and give a larger space fill with dark beams. That’s what we did in our great room in. Love it.

The fix that you did on your house turned out really good. The sheet rock is going up real good. I liked the white horse but that other little pony I don’t care for. He just seems to be trouble. You guys take care. 👍❤️
A lighter ceiling will make a cozy space feel larger. Since you aren't installing uppers in the kitchen area, it doesn't matter if you have clear coat, stain or paint.
Ceiling color should be what will work well for the light requirements of the space. Small space suggests a light to white color, maybe a light cream.❤

I have to agree with Melissa on the ceiling. A smaller space needs brightness to not feel so closed in.
I would put up a sheetrock ceiling and paint it a very light blue (barely blue) to make it look more like the sky. I would not do shiplap just because it will be dated in 10 years when shiplap is no longer "in style". I would put up wood over the shiplap. Wood is timeless.
Ya the ship lap would look so good especially with the darker moldings because that would definitely make it pop, you two do look real cute together, because you seem to have a lot fun together.

Since the ceiling is shorter, definitely a lighter color ship lap ceiling! I’d even do creamy white walls and bright white ceiling, it’ll make it feel more open in there. I would do white or light blue for the ceiling with wood beams!🥰 Not sure of your decor or wall colour but just an idea! The blue and wood beams I thought would go good with the mountains and sky! The light color will open it up for sure, so yes I'm with Melissa on that!💕

Jeremy, here's a drywall tip for you. Don't screw the butt edges until the sheet next to it is installed. You will notice that when you drive screws into the edges with no sheet next to it, that there's a little 'bump' on the edge next to the screw. So... install the sheet and screw off the two center studs and then install the next sheet, and only then put the screws in the butt edges.

Although the problem detected in the wood of the hall ceiling was not significant and was easily resolved, the rationale for the cause will have to be sought and the entire house inspected to prevent it.
