- The Wire was far from a surefire hit from day one. Host Method Man walks through The Wire’s long journey to the screen and the initial challenges it faced. Series co-creators David Simon and Ed Burns join to discuss how their backgrounds in journalism and law enforcement shaped their vision for the series. Executive producer Nina Noble and writer/producer George Pelecanos weigh in on how the writer’s room was sometimes a shouting match.

I binge watch The Wire in it's entirety at least once a year. It never gets old
Me too I’m always catching new things I missed. I swear I forget entire scenes that are brilliant.
Never gets but always make a new discovery within the show somewhere 🔥🔥
@@robertbaratheon2193 I am doing my yearly re-watch now, and realized three things: 1. the woman in S1 that is snitching on her boyfriend b.c. he is riding another woman around in her car, is Michael's mother. 2. the original guy who plays cheese is not Method Man. "The Cheese stands ALONE." (c) Omar 3. The lady who Cutty used to date? Grace? When he goes to her sister's house, to find out where she is: that is the cracked out version of the lady he is looking for. So the actress played 2 roles: Grace, and Grace's smokehound sister in the projects.
I've done it myself going into season 3 till this day.
@@robertbaratheon2193 :bv
I honestly still don’t see another show surpassing The Wire’s excellence. Writing, acting, social commentary, the infinite details, the realism, the wide sweeping scope,… This show had it all.
I keep saying the wire is objectively the best show ever written.. It's not even my personal favorite of the hbo holy trinity (Oz,. Sopranos and the wire) but as is what a script can accomplish both on and off screen nothing will everr be better than the wire.. People are alive today because of the wire, laws have been changed, minds around the world have been opened..
Imagine living there and seeing this show. It’s more surreal than you think.
Because every show try’s to copy it
It does have some huge flaws though let's not lie to ourselves, and in terms of consistency breaking bad has it beat imo
@@isaiahromero9861 sure, The Wire has its flaws (especially the homeless serial killer storyline in season 5), but it didn’t have the cartoonishly ridiculous features that Breaking Bad has. There was an obscene amount of plot armor incorporated throughout the series. Also the fulminated mercury scene, Gus walking away like Wile E. Coyote after getting blown up, the rigged machine gun in the trunk, etc.
The Sopranos and The Wire, two of the absolute best shows ever created that were pioneers in creating the way TV shows became what they are now.
Mad Men deserves to be in that conversation.
So does Breaking Bad.
@@rawman18 Indeed
Third Watch (99-05)- has probably 100 actors from the wire, sopranos, and oz. Its more pg13 compared to HBO, and not as tightly written, but its good. It has Method Man in it
The Sopranos are the Beatles and The Wire is Led Zeppelin
It was so emotionally satisifying when Cheese died, which is a credit to how well Method Man played him
that was for joe
Also slim charles bein the one to do it. He was almost like the referee of the streets
But it saddened me that Randy never got to know his father.
@@olubukonla7352 🤣 he was a wagstaff after all
THE FOCK YOU DO THAT FOOAH
The first time I saw The Wire I said “they’re telling way too much truth here. Who okayed this?” I could not believe that they let this go forward. Still the best show to date bar none.
Binged season 1-5 again...the show is still one of the best ever😁
💯
Yep.
Bout that time of the year again for me
Binge watching now
Indeed!! Just last year I realized Omar's 2nd boyfriend was the one who turned around and shot the girl robber on accident, or was it an accident
The Wire was, is and will be the most eye opening show in television history.
Also the best.
I remember when this show first started.
Me and my wife used to eat dinner to this show on Sunday nights.
One of the best shows ever.
This Method Man guy has a pretty nice voice and delivery. He should try rap, I think he'd make a good mc
😂
Right?! 😉
😅
hahaha. M E T H O D Man....... .
And he should go by the name Iron Lung
Got the DVD set and the Digital Versions of this show. I've watched it fully 7 times and will watch it more than that throughout my life. For me nothing will ever compare to the brilliance of The Wire and nothing will ever compare. RIP to everyone who has passed that worked on this show, especially Michael K. Williams. Omar Little is the greatest character on TV ever!!!
Same here HelRayzer, I always loved the Wire.
Same bro! I've watched the series so many times I've lost count.
I bought the DVD box set in 2010. I've watched it fully several times over the last 12 years.
Followed by Snoop, Strang and bro. Mouzone.
@@olubukonla7352 I put Bodie before all them, Michael too prob. Love Snoops ending though, one of the greatest!
'All the pieces matter'
Television has never been the same... 🐐
Great book all about the best show of all time💯
I started and binged this show completely for the first time a few months ago. My only regret is that I’ll never be able to watch it for the first time again. Absolute masterpiece.
I recommend giving the show another watch someday. You pick up on a lot new things on a second viewing when you have the context of the whole show in your mind.
@@stupid90able I definitely plan to do that in the near future. I’m hoping I can put someone new on to the show and it’ll give me a good excuse to rewatch.
That is why I wait awhile before re watching it. To give myself a chance to forget some details, then learn them all over again.
@@deprosport7254 I said the same exact thing. Not being able to rewatch it for the first time is the only downside. It was that good. But definitely give it a rewatch or two. You pick up on little things you missed before
This takes me back...I was confused at first by all of the characters. Never thought I would ever learn them all.
My opinion is this is the best show ever on TV. I rewatch it every couple of years.
This TV Show was something different in every way. Eventho all the seasons has different focus, theyre all still gems in their own way. Cant listen to this without thinking about Michael K. Williams, such a loss but may he rest in peace.. His work will forever be remebered ❤️
Check out bullet with 2pac and Mickey Rourke
I love how most characters are followed throughout the show. Like you will see someone in season 2 and then they pop back up in season 4 or 5 and they have progressed or regressed in life or their career. Like we see the guys from the docks as homeless people a few seasons later, which sort of shows that their worst fears were actually realized.
Remember when Cheese got his Wig pulled back and he had that death shake Brilliant 👏👏👏👏👏👏
In addition to being the Number 1 fan of the Sopranos, I consider myself the nation's Number 1 unabashed, hopelessly addicted Wirefreak. My DVD set of all seasons of The Wire is among my most cherished possessions - the show doesn't get old even after repeated (I've lost track of the number of times) viewings. Thank you, Mr. Simon, Mr. Burns, and Mr. Smith for your superb contributions to this drama, which is a comprehensive deep dive into American society. Simply excellent.
The fact you even mention another tv show in the same comment. Is an abomination of infinite sorts. I am the wires true one and only #1 fan
@@ooooo524 No, I am the numer one fan!
Thank you HBO for this great show. So many layers great acting great story. Watched it many times. This was the first thing I watched after getting HBO Max
I got HBO max for the wire-had my girlfriend order it for me lol
Absolute masterpiece🐐
I think Method Man should host a NPR show. 😎
I remember the days HBO was Channel 6 in NY during the 80s and 90s they don’t make shows like Oz The Sopranos and The Wire anymore something special
Was living in (but not from) Baltimore during H:LOTS and the Wire. Went to college the same time as Simon (and Mills). This show will always be No. 1.
Just watched the entire series again for the first time in a long time, despite several clip binges on CZcams. You pick up more than a few things each time you watch it through. It's frustrating that so many people still don't know about this show.. if it came out today it would be 10 times bigger.
Way more honest and relevant than I would have expected, given the airing of all the BS that came down from HBO at the time. We can all learn and grow. So let’s have another David Simon/Ed Burns series, please.
Thanks for this. I’ve watched the series a couple times, recently and it stands up quite well.
The Wire, Sopranos & Deadwood, all on the same tier. People saying things like Breaking Bad & Mad Men are on the same level is simply ridiculous. Each of the first three shows I mentioned covers more content in a single episode than one of the others do in an entire season.... I mean, Sons of Anarchy? Are you joking me?
"According to Simon, the best way to understand “The Wire” is to think Greek - not the nefarious Greek characters who dominate the illicit trade in Baltimore’s ports, but the storytelling tradition of the ancient Greek tragedies, where the heroes and anti-heroes always face a dramatic downfall, usually as a result of their own hubris."
Waiting ages for a pod on this show. Yes!
The wire was my favorite show. I have watched this show over five times easy. ROME, The Wire, Deadwood, Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, and now Game of Thrones are and will always will be my go to shows. I always wished ROME had more seasons. I know it was an expensive show during the beginning days of HBO series'
Yeah, it was too early in HBO's time for epic shows like that. Not enough money. I wonder if Rome would have came out a decade later would they have not rushed and packed season three with three seasons worth of timelines. I bet Rome could have had five or six seasons. CZcams has a cool documentary on HBO Rome that explained it all. When Caesar fought in Egypt he unintentionally burned down the library that held all the ancient scrolls. I wonder what amazing history was lost cause of that moment.
Rome's cancellation had nothing to do with money. Watch the documentary "Milius". John simply made too many enemies. There was no away the Hollywood commies would allow him to make a full comeback.
@@respectedlocalgentleman7108 I'll watch it, thank you.
Deadwood especially stands out with that gorgeously shot opening credit sequence.
@J Dowty I am sooo sad that it did nt get a s6, which was going to be about the criminialization of immigrants. Which I saw FIRST HAND working at Ordinance RD.
more of this!!!
My favorite show 😍
We need this show to come back
Greatest tv-series of all time.
Best TV series ever, got all the seasons in DVD. Got to watch it again during the COVID lockdown and it gets better everytime you watch it.
It's the GOAT. Love the sopranos/breaking bad/oz and all that sheeeeeeeit but The Wire is untouchable.
Oz hit me to my CORE. I will NEVER shake it from my system.
Oz was just dumb
Randy's dad doing a wire podcast. Awesome
This is dope, The Wire is my favorite series ever so anything involving the show I’m with it.
The Wire a course of study at Harvard who else can claim that and before The Wire was The Corner
Absolutely brilliant 👏 👌 😀 👍 🙌 😄
So good
Need visuals on this ..it will be a success
The Wire is one of those few shows that more than entertainment. It leaves an impact on you.
This was the best show ever. Timeless.
“It’s all in the game”
The Wire is the best show ever made! The only other show that comes close is my 2nd favorite show, 'The Shield'.. The Wire is timeless, thank you for all the great work!
The Wire is one of the best pieces of TV ever made. It's like the bible, you can always go back to it and learn something.
I knew that "talking sopranos" started a ripple effect. This is a cool way to rewatch your favorite shows.
RIP SNOT BOOGIE
Classic 💯💯
one of the best shows ever if not the best
So is there like a video version of this available?
BEST SHOW EVERRRRRR!
Oh, this should be reeeeeeeeal good.

I started watching this show a month ago, but have sadly lost touch with it plan on continuing with it soon though great too see this🍻 the sapranos podcast was also great for anyone who might want too check it out
You stopped watching? Lol whatevs

The only show I prefer to rank over The Wire is Deadwood. I also find it interesting that my top 3 favorite shows were created by David's. The David Trilogy
Definitely bro. My top 3 is The Wire, ROME, and Boardwalk Empire
Definitely. The Wire, ROME, Deadwood, Sopranos, and Boardwalk Empire are my favorite shows.
Deadwood's in my top 5 (and the movie was awesome!), but The Wire is first on my list.
@@mrbiggrin6261 boardwalk empire was amazing!
Top 3 best tv show
this podcast post on CZcams could have easily been just an image. Instead we get an animated desktop, complete with flickering lights. i expect to hear in the background Herc and Carver arguing about how to move the desk into the room (or out of the room?) in a later episode.
Lol!
I always tell people before they watch my box set. It's not a show. They put cameras on the street and jus let it roll. That's how real it feels. Best show in the history of television. I'm old school Home Box Office. Like Not Necessarily the News 🗝️old.🗝️
I was just thinking about Cheese. Just what I needed.
Classic!!!!! 4ever
The wire is one of the best written tv shows of all time I'm rewatching it now and it still grabs you from the very beginning and keeps you wanting more just amazing tv
The wire can thank the lack of streaming and the dvd only model of Netflix at the time. You were locked in to the two dvds you got in the mail and didn’t have anything else to watch. If you can make it past the 4th or 5th episode you were Hooked and became that person making midnight runs to the post office dropping off your dvd envelope pining for the next one. That’s when the show made its way into the zeitgeist of being one of the best shows ever.
Just give us another season or a spin off. PLEASE!!!!!
The Wire and Boardwalk Empire are the two greatest shows EVER!!!
bring it back!!!!! Billion dollar win
@Rewind That with Ms. Kay
The wire is a master piece of TV.
A mans gotta have as code!
🥰
Now I’m grown I’m watching my parents wouldn’t let me hahah
In the mid 200's you could watch an episode of the Wire, and then you could simply get on the internet and look things up. It was sparse, but because of for instance Homicide: Life on the Streets, you could find it, and see what had been done and talked bout and see how it developed into the Wire too.
I like the site for each episode for the Sopranos that journalist did. Outstanding work. If this show is so great why isn't it held as in high regards as Sopranos? I actually never watched the show until l watched all the deaths. I don't like US killing each other on TV shows. Enough of that in reality. Anyways, no one was shot up 16 times in the face (from Chicago so no need for extra violence) . I was able to stand to watch the show. Weird. Nothing's changed in 20 years and is actually worse. The masses are to blame.
Y no visuals for this?
Was methods man's character "cheese" related to Randy.. both last name Wagstaff??
6:05
THAT was for JOE!!!!!
The Wire is great but it doesn't zoom out far enough. The financial system, who actually runs it, and who actually runs government, that's (probably) out of the scope of what you would see on mainstream TV.
So underrated and unappreciated but The Wire is untouchable name a better series il wait....🤔🧘♂️🕒
The corner!!!!
Who else thought we own this city was finna be the wire part 2 lol
Yeah thAt show was not that good
It IS, in it's own way...
It’s not but it is. Very telling of how Baltimore came to be the way it was in that era.
The weirdest thing about The Wire is that nobody ever wears a wire. Bodie lifts his shirt to show a lack of a wire. i feel like this is kind of a joke to the audience who thinks "surely someone will be wearing a frikkin wire in this wire show" but nope ... they won't.
Omar wore a wire during the first season when they had him working after Brandon died. He gets back in the car after a parlay, returns the wire and says something like "Ive done I can for yall" thats my recollection anyway
Really liked the series. I never even knew about this show until I saw it on HBO max a couple weeks ago.
I thought it was a little over acted at times but it was definitely riveting.
I do have one criticism, the way Omar Little’s character ended was a huge, HUGE disappointment.
Any recommendations on the more series like this mostly drug related or cartels ??
Gomorrah
You can find more series but across its five seasons the wire was truly unique in the different perspectives it explored
Third Watch(99-05) its pg13 compared to HBO and not as tightly written, but it has probably 100 actors from the sopranos, the wire, and oz, including Method Man
The shield
@@CaptLoquaLacon I prefer the wire ..
Why did the show never reveal that (season 4)Randy was Cheese son??
The Wire is not a TV show. It's a seminar.

It was his father they were going to go into it Soo I heard but they cut the show
Who Better than Cheese 😯😉😆😀😁
Mr. Cheese? I see. And who do you work for Mr. Cheese?
Just like the sopranos we will never see another series like the good ol days, snowfall and the chi are dope but it ain't the wire, still filmed very well though
