What chassis should we put this engine into when we rebuild it?

yes yes yes about time ,,,,,, put this baby into a FRS and take that FRS to NFLD ....(wisper....Targa Newfoundland) :)

a crappy old beetle :D
Watching a great mechanic is kinda like watching a world class surgeon work. Amazing talent.
you've never watched a "world class surgeon" work
@@krebgurfson5732 considering i have worked for the last 20 year in an operating room assisting a surgeon I would say you are wrong. But I am sure you are use to being wrong since you seem to alway be wrong loser
i love this analogy
The thing is the mechanic is the surgeon of that metal body where a surgeon is the mechanic of a biological body !
I tell my mechanic this all the time.
God I wish I could have done an apprenticeship during the time of the EJ series of engines
Nam is a wizard he made this tear down like a chore .Many yrs of experience right there
Awesome vid guys. Thanks for sharing. Love the content on this project so far!
This video just makes me appreciate how easy American OHV V8 based engines are to work on,specifically the LS platform...
@Eze&Yare Dominguez this is a very simple engine. Once you do two or three you would be able to remember all the pieces and parts easily. It just looks complex when you do it first time. All the parts are high quality and fit easily. Unlike some.
@Merl Klarhoelter the fuck are you crying about? Those LS's still outperform a large number of DOHC
@Brett i have a B7 S4 & thus block seems more complicated than the bbk v8 i have
Despite of the beautiful works on the rebuilt, your cinematic shoot is absolutely amazing. Especially those timelapse, always fascinating.
I love the way You teach.
Thank You so much!
I really want to appreciate you guys for this!!
Just to add a quick note, the LH cam gears that are loaded are easy to mess up and bend the valves, they didnt do it the right way. The intake gear needs to be spun clockwise, the exhaust gear needs to be spun counter clockwise. Most of the time you can get away with doing it like they did but theres enough spring pressure that if one of the gears slips it will catch the edges of the valves and will easily bend them, and no one ever checks after they do it which can lead to the car running like crap, or turning the valves into a tossed salad.
isnt it the other way around? for unloading the cams the intake goes counterclockwise exhaust goes clock wise
I don't think they are that easy to bend. I believe it's more of a precaution, so you don't take a impact or a breaker bar to the bolts. I'm picturing some ding dong kicking the breaker bar like he/she is trying to crack lugnuts on the side of 95.
the Key being to make sure the crank alignment mark and oil pump mark are lined up so the pistons are mid stroke and you don't bend the valves.
Really impressed with his knowledge. When a mechanic is that proficient at engine rebuilds you know those engines are terribly unreliable lol
they're very reliable. they have a few issues, but they always go at least 180k miles. problem is that they're not maintained well and hooned often.
True...
Every engine is reliable as the person who is operating or maintaining them. Increasing the output and operating an engine at its limits reduces longevity. Lack of maintenance reduces reliability even more.
Well my 06 LGT has a stage 2 tune and a vf52 turbo and has 200k miles no issues. My 1999 subaru legacy outback has 240k with zero issues also. So I think it's more user error than the ej series motors.
@@markheefner6527 Did you replace injectors/fuel pump using the VF52? In the middle of a similar build right now with my 05 Legacy GT. Engine is out at the machine shop at the moment.
Very interesting. I never would have thought to dismember the rods from the pistons to complete a tear down. However the access ports for the wrist pin clips was pretty neat!
Subaru flat motors are a lot like harley or other older vtwin style engines that have vertically split cases. Thats pretty neat to see how it breaks down to such a small engine block that a guy can move it around on the table.
really good video quality. straight to the point and informative
I’d love to rebuild one after watching this! A good challenge
Thanks guys, it's a good video, very professional and instructive and educational, I learned a lot. I want to tell you that I really appreciate it.
This video is fabulous. THANK YOU!!!
Goodness. It's like a Japanese puzzle box!
the ej is still nothing compared to working on my vg30dett 😂
@@user-gr7pm7iz8w Hope it blows up
Honestly its like a giant lego set
I’m rebuilding an ej25 rn, this was a hell of a run through, thank you guys
how's it going so far? my ej25 died from rod kock and wanna drop an ej205 in it but not sure if my engine is still able to be rebuilt
Great explanation by the bloke, good job guys!
Today I learned that I infact don't want to build a Subaru engine. Nam is a Subaru god great job and finesse.
video is very good. throughly explains everything and speaks slow but a good pace so u can understand. keep up the good work man :)
Very refreshing watching a mechanic that is able to explain things in detail without pausing every 3 seconds to figure out what they're actually doing, or not knowing any of the terminology to describe the function of a component
Best automotice channel hands down!
Really nice video. Great job.
great video , I've always been curious about how the block is parted thanks , removing the piston clips & pins was an eye opening , only flat 4 I've done was a VW this is way different obviously due to water cooling and overhead camshafts & cambelts and with VW the bores/barrels can be slide out of the crankcasing , knowledge and being methodical clearly is the only way to go with the Scooby engine, doesn't appear too difficult to dismantle I'm sure the rebuilding has lots of do's and don'ts that aren't so obvious at first ,cheers
Disassembling these engines is always fun.
Thanks buddy......I've been wanting to know for like 10 years ago....
Yes sir I have a special hardened socket just for the head bolts used to do at least one or two head gasket and engine reseal on Subarus a week I have just a little experience!
So psyched for this
Best EJ20 breakdown ever.
Hey I have a p0500 code on my subaru exiga 2008 turbocharged but I can't seem to find where the sensor is located. Can any 1 help?
I am going to need this for my little ride yesterday
GREAT VIDEO!!
Opening an Subaru engine today for the first time alone. Thanks for the info
thanks a lot guys, I am a tutor, my class and I learned a lot through this video thanks
Thank you so much from Morocco.
Jus watching made me sub this is the kind on knowledge i was looking for
Excellent video!👍
Never owned Subaru engine so many videos on rebuilds
Must be CZcams TOP rebuilt engine online
Because they go just enough to warrant frequent rebuilding but they last long enough before that to warrant doing it in the first place.
The NV Auto guys! Hamilton represent 👊🏽
YES! another EJ video on YT.
my project has been sitting in the garage for the whole winter. n i can't wait to learn new things that I'm gonna have to tackle.
Good to note cracking off (the first half turn of undoing bolts)bolts by hand. Cracking off by impact wrench really does mash the threads and size them.
Great content! Thanks!
Smart guy thanks for the video
I have been using Valvoline Oil 10W-40 for EZ30R engine of SUBARU, too.
This is perfect, because I had to replace my oil pump, and I might look back on this video for a rebuilding my engine to make more power.
Super informative video
This guys amazing
good video, thank you!
This helped alot
Nice work👍
Good afternoon!!! my name is Marcos Vinicius speaking from the city of Curitiba Brasil🇧🇷. I'm a big fan of your channel
great stuff great video
My neighbor worked at a Subaru dealer in the 90's. His wife had a Blue 2 door 2.5 RS in like 99 or 2000 w gold wheels.(had a black one before) Looked like it str8 came out of Grand turismo stock. I would LOVE to see a good engine in one with a big ol spoolie boi
Great video
Subaru is the king of the road
thanks for this! nice shots and easy to follow. How similar will an EJ22 be to this engine?
I have been driving n working on Subaru for the last 31 years
what's the most reliable Subaru engine sir
@@mattmatt9971 ej20
@@michaeldwyer5013Cheers. I got EJ20G in my 1995 sti.
Interesting! Thank you. Have a Subaru w/ a 2.5 eng. Just bought the car.
is is single or DOHC? mine is a single and non vvt
Geez those boxer engines are so much more work to take apart & put back together compared to a inline four design.
Theyre so much easier to install though and remove.
I don't even own a WRX, but i enjoyed this video immensely.
If only you were an actual program/school.... AMAZING video!
@ 2:00 I was lost for a second when he goes to do the intake manifold, because there's no bolt. But then I recognized he's obviously doing this for teaching purposes, and there would normally be a bolt there! lol im so dumb! hahaha
I’m rebuilding my engine I JUST took it out the car today this video was amazing to see how it’s done ☺️
Label EVERYTHING.
If anything needs blasted/repaired, keep it labelled. And photograph everything and every stage of disassembly. I'm rebuilding my engine now, and I'm finding brackets I have no idea what they are.
@@monkeylover2835 I did that for like my first five engine rebuilds, it was fucking horrible
How'd it go?
Nowukkas brah haha thank you😂
BR Harrison it went AMAZING☺️ I already put 500 miles on the motor going for the tune on Thursday!!
Brilliant.
I have an Ej255, so i'll probably have to do this sooner or later :D And I basically live down the street from NvAuto, so that's a bonus.
Great video but if the cam bolts get stuck you can always use an 11/16 turbo socket :)no need to cut em out
Killer video! I feel like rebuilding mine will be no prob with this video! But I'm curious about the steps that you fast forward past right before you split the block.. why didn't you show what to do there?
I used j20 cylinder heads for the j 25 turbo engine, but I did somes modifications with the j 20 cylinder heads to work with the engine j 25
nice video,Im looking to rebuld a 2011 outback engine
Watching from Philippines,.
These engines have caused me so much grief over the years but I still like them for some reason.
There’s a reason why they call them master techs. Amazing .
I’ve had 4 Subaru’s and I currently own a built 2017 STI and I can tell you it’s cheaper to just buy a built block and rework whatever heads you have than rebuild. You can buy a built short block and get a 1 year warranty and still come out cheaper than rebuilding a 2.0 or 2.5
Oh shit... I know Dave from Headgames. He does amazing work. Good dude.
I send all heads to them from every motor i work on. Top notch.
You should do a side by side comparison usdm vs jdm motor tear down would be cool to see what the states don’t get
James Nunez just take everything good off the JDM engine, and then you get the one for the states, we never get the goods :/
U get a reliable motor if u get a jdm one lmao
Subarus are really really art of Japanese engineering....
For the Cam gears: when you shear off a hardened 3/4” drive Allen trying to break it free, the factory may be fucking up putting them on that tightly. Strangely enough my USDM EJ205T had the hex shank to secure the cam from spinning but there is no way these bolts being so insanely difficult were torqued at the factory to the spec outline in the FSM. Edit: be very very careful with the cam bolts if doing HGs in the car, have to use a shallow, 6 point 10mm socket and be sure to tap the socket on deeply as the cam bolt heads are quite prone to stripping.
Awesome!! After seeing this I dont think I ever want a sti lol
I concur...sure my NA K20 is gutless but easy to rebuild...like a lawnmower!
@@aronharper7001 k series is life tho!
Its not so bad trust me, i came from a h22a obd1 closed deck to an sti, the ej looks more complicated than it actually is.
I just did a rebuild on my ej20 and while the engine is complex and difficult, reinstalling is so fucking easy. The the motor mounts are on the block, put it onto the subframe and its just two studs. Done. Takes less than an hour. While staight 4s have 4 different motor mount locations and shit. Fuck that.
An* STi
fyi, i owned a USDM 2.0 WRX wagon, and it has cable throttle. I believe in the US, the EJ257/ej255 was the first engines to get DBW. and the 2.0L EJ was no longer in US WRX after 2005.
Am a fan of this shows
nice~! do other engine as well
Factory Five Racing has a pretty neat tiny Miata-ish affordable build setup specifically for these engines :)
Yup, the 818 is a pretty cool little car, our friends over at NV Auto just built one.
thanks!
Put this motor in a Factory Five 818 C . I am going for a WRX STI in the coupe I am building. 1900 lbs pushed by 310 horsepower. What a rocket.
Looking at the complexity of this boxer engine, no wonder why Suby's engine repair cost usually more than a traditional inline 4.
this and the rotary engine breakdown has my mechanical oils flowing!💪😳
Great work from a great technician
Can someone help please
Best way to seal the EGR TUBE THREADS?
2008 outback
i pull these apart all the time for work and you guys make it look soo difficult.
Subaru forester 2011,its my favorite
I wish I had the knowledge to do this to my 03 Bugeye
very informitive
Where is your shop. Look s like He knows what he does, very good video
Seems that the cause of the burnt valveseat is either a bent valve or a damaged valve guide, as nam seems to need way more force than normal to pull this one valve out.
jeah.but correct the MB C200 kompressor head. ..
The crank pulley in my instance does not want to pull off without a fight. Will see how it goes tomorrow
Is there any video on speed academy on what and how to transfer parts from jdm to usdm engine
I love your videos I have a question is it possible to develop 150hp of an ej25 at 2100 rpm I would like to install on an amateur aircraft with no gear box
Question: Nam said that on the USDM engines, there are no hex on the camshafts to put a wrench on to and if you don't have a special tool, there is another way to loosen the bolts. I have a stock US motor and no special tool. What is "the other way" to loosen and remove the cam gear bolts?
Muy buena información gracias
Hey, I have a probl
em with my automatic gearbox for subaru forester 1998 model, where gear 2 and 4 fails! Please can you give ideas on understanding where the problem is or a video on how it works
I worked with cars for several years but nothing like replacing piston rings and seals. I got 2010 subaru forester 2.5l and I probably need to do that soon. I already got low compression on cylinder 4 @70psi. I didn't try the restore lubricant yet but if I try to rebuild the engine with new piston rings and seals and learning as I go with repair guide and some help... How long would it take me. I want to learn this stuff, do it right and use my subaru to learn it.
