THE PENULTIMATE YUAN EMPERORS - EL TEMÜR'S DICTATORSHIP

  • After the war of the two capitals, the Yuan dynasty keeps declining under general El Temür's firm dictatorship and his puppet emperor Tugh Temur (Jayaatu Khan)'s reign. Bending to the Mongol laws of succession, Tugh Temur must ceede his throne to his elder brother Khoshila (Khutughtu Khan), though El Temür promptly commits regicide to reclaim power. In his short reign, puppet Tugh Temur focuses his insignificant power on cultural efforts, as the empire faces civil war, natural disasters and famine. Finally, a brief succession crises occurs after his death, and his nephew, the child emperor Rinchinbal succeeds as emperor for less than two months, paving the path for the last Yuan emperor, Toghon Temür.

The Yuan just can't seem to catch a break. Imagine having two succession crisis, two civil wars, rebellions, Emperors dying early, an unpopular military dictator, and near bankruptcy, all on top of sequential disasters. Then realize all this happened over the course of just two to five years...

Fascinating series. The narration, graphics and bilingual names and text are outstanding. Exactly how history should be taught. Bravo 👏🏻
[A minor semantic detail: “influent” refers to the directional flow of water etc. from the Latin _influx_ ("influent" = flowing inwards), in physics or plumbing, the opposite of _effluent_ - you mean *influential* as in the adjectival form of “influence”
