If you feel like building a 5" Freestyle Drone is too hard, you just need the right guidance.
So, I built a course with 71 highly detailed but simple modules, breaking down absolutely everything! They're can't be anything missing, if there is, I will add it. Avoiding set-up errors and ensuring optimal performance of your Quadcopter can transform your FPV experience. With the right tools and knowledge, BetaFlight setup and using FlyFish-RC's new 3.5" Volador VX3.5 it will become a walk in the park.
Building a 3.5" Quad is a delicate balance of selecting the right components. The FlyFish-RC Volador VX3.5 Frame and 1804 Motors provide an optimal combination of size, weight, power, and video capture capabilities.
Build Specs:
- Frame: FlyFishRC Volador VX3.5
- Motors: FlyFishRC Flash 1804 2450kv
- FC/ESC: Foxeer Reaper V4 AIO
- Video: DJI O3 Air Unit
- Radio: RadioMaster RP1 ExpressLRS
- Battery: Bonka 6S 550mah
The frame assembly process is straightforward, although it does require significant hardware. One notable feature is the compact front section, which is smaller than FlyFish-RCâs traditional 5" frames. Another unique aspect is the creative receiver mount, which sits under the rear, rather than being squeezed into the frame.
The Foxeer Reaper All In One V4 is the go-to electronic for 5" Ultra Lite Racing Builds that run 6S. It's noteworthy to mention that FlyFish-RC uses a square mount for the All In One, which deviates from the traditional diamond shape. The mounting pattern requires some adjustments in the BetaFlight Configuration.
On the power front, the 1804 motors offer better performance than the typical 1404 motors. They provide more torque at the low to medium end of the throttle curve, have lower resistance for extended flight times, and come with a minor weight penalty due to their size.
The chosen power source is a Bonka 550mah 6S LiPo Battery, which pairs well with 2450kv motors for a 6S build. However, if you prefer a 4S setup, consider using 3500kv motors and a 4S 850mah battery.
For video capturing, the DJI O3 Air Unit excels in comparison to Go-Pro Bones or Insta360 Go. The DJI O3 Camera benefits from silicon inserts for soft mounting on the CNC camera mounts. Flyfish-RC has also introduced a DJI O3 Stubby Antenna.
Betaflight configuration is a critical step in the setup process. Mounting the Flight Controller square and backward requires adjusting the Board Alignment to YAW minus 45 degrees and Gyro to CW 90 Degrees. For tuning, several presets can be applied, such as the SupaFly Freestyle 3/4 inch preset and QuadMcFlyâs DJI HD OSD Preset.
Errors can occur during setup, which can lead to problems like the quad flipping out. For instance, forgetting to re-order motors after the ESC layout changes can lead to such issues.
To avoid setup mishaps, follow a simple troubleshooting process. This process involves proper calibration and alignment, re-ordering motors, and correct prop direction. Once your quad is properly configured, it's time to test it out!
After several flights with the Volador 3.5" Quad, a few changes are worth considering. These include using a 20x20 mini stack for better room and weight savings, and adopting the TBS Tracer Extended Antenna for compatibility with ExpressLRS.
Despite the minor tweaks, the Volador 3.5" Quad proves to be a potential favorite for those interested in 3.5" Freestyle Quads. Whether you're a seasoned flyer or just starting, remember to always aim high and send it! - VÄda a technologie

It's almost like I see this issue on a daily ;).
Great work brother. In the process of finishing mine
yeah, it happens all too often. That and Airmode on the desk đ€ŠđŒââïž
Few months im looking for 3.5 inch with this frame build but still cannot see better, but now this video is perfect amazing work sir + 1 subs.thanks for this great workđ
Glad I could help
Very interesting video, with this configuration how much is the flight time?
Hi mate! Awesome vid and channels. Any chance you share your filters and pid tuning for this drone. I am having a lot of vibrations on mine
I was given a Radiomaster TX16S ( I guess version 1) and a Mobula6 with ELRS 900/915 Rx built in to the FC a little over a year ago... I spent weeks trying to get it to work but no joy... the guy who had it before me couldnt get it to work either, nor could several other flyers. So it got put aside for several months. I was then given a box of 5" pieces parts ( DIY build kit) several months ago and took my chances at getting it to work... again no joy, until just a few days ago. Finally figured out what needed to be flashed, what needed to be upgraded and then purchased the Happy Models ELRS 900/915 and 2.4 add on Tx packs for the radio. I set the 5" up with the 2.4 EP-1 elrs Rx and got it working but the motors all spun the same direction. Off to Betaflight to check things out and had to rewire the #1 and #3 motor to get reverse rotation.... did a motor check and it still works. I set things all up and tested it on the radio and more joy, but a glitch showed up in the throttle, reattached to Betaflight and it tells me it needs some kind of "upgrade" since I changed a setting on the GPS... I let the setting take place and WTF???? now the 5" doesnt work on the radio but does in Betaflight but it no longer finds the Txmtr... Betaflight may be an awesome piece of software but it is driving me nutz... ohh and BTW the Mobula6 still wont bind to the RM TX16s with HM ELRS900/915 Tx module.... Im at a total loss with the Mob.... I long for the days of FM and Xtals, so easy to use, all you need is matching Xtals and youre good to go... no flashing, no binding, no computers needed
You forgot one more thing. You should also rotate the quad and verify that the yaw axis is correct too. If the board was flipped, itâs possible to get pitch and roll correct but not yaw.
very true!
Absolutely right â ïž
can you paste you betaflight cli dump file.. i have the same build! please, board set up the same!
thanks Darren, i missed this video on the release tbh, but im so excited for this volador 3.5 with 1804, i just ordered those. built my 3inch in spring with 1404 and suffering with the lack of power on a heavier frame, sooo now will try this combo, it looks like there is no lack of power from the flight you had.
what are the props you used?
Props I think from memory were the gemfan hurricanes
Wannt to buy this to wich props do you have
I had to invert a GEPRC 35 amp FC set up for a cinelifter to work on my 4" racer X frame.
Everything was fine.
Next build was my Apex HD freestyle frame And I had installed a stack I already setup and used for a 4" quad and didn't bother to change anything in Betaflight.
When I went Outside for my maiden flight it did that same backflip as the intro but slower.
I tried twice before I realized That the lemon lime props I was using are sold to be either limon on one side ond lime on the other, or likewise front and back.
I had my rear props on backwards because I crossed colors.
Sometimes it doesn't require betaflight to fix the problem... Check your prop rotation first. đ
Hey beginner here ,does the 6s battery sag a lot under full throttle ,as people say 4s sags a lot and recommend a 6s
Anything says a lot under full throttle.
What goggles are you using new to the hobby?Trying to figure out what's the best goggles to buy
The âbestâ goggles is irrelevant- itâs the FPV system that matters. Walksnail, DJI or HDZero.
How has this frame hold up so far? I'm between this and the LHCXRC cloud 160 .
Actually I want a 4" frame for the o3 without props in view. The only one is the foxeer, but it's really heavy.
Its a great frame, I like it
Nice high velocity landing at the end on the bench. I've never tried that. hehe
Just have to send it, even when landing.
If you record at 4:3 with the 03 and put the footage through gyroflow are there still props in view?
haven't tried, but will give a shot next time I am flying O3 and let you know.
That being said, you'd lose a significant amount of the frame & resolution by doing so
thanks for you great video! could you share you tuning file for beta? i just to order one thanks to you but i am real beginner for setting..it will help me a lot
SupaFly 3/4â preset.
@@DarrenAllatt Does it a preset for this quad?thanks for you help
@@derivas007 its in betaflight presets
By any chance can yoy provide a cli dump of your quad ? I will like to try it out
What was your flight time with the 6s 650mah battery? Doing freestyle
Around 5 mins
A 20x20 stack might save room to the sides, but not in hight. Depends what you need. Obviously you benefit from seperating esc and FC in case of burning something dead. It adds 5g though. Here sub250g is already not possible anymore.
Gemfan just released some 3630 props. I'm building a 3.5" 6s on 2004 motors anf the 3630 next.
Unfortunatly there are too little 4" frames I like
For a mini stack. Youâd have height, which wouldnât be an issue. There is still plenty of clearance as you can see from the stack screws.
Sub 250g is getting more difficult. 300g is doable. Theyâre not going to know 200g dry weight vs 300g AUW
Cheers from qld buddy
Thanks Spaghetti! Carn the Blues!
@@DarrenAllatt I don't follow football hahah
Is it better than 1604 and 3.5"?
Is what better?

1804 on a 3.5 inch prop is a big boy setup.
Absolutely!
haha thats the exact thing that happend to me yesterday arm -> flip back -> fuck
This is the centre square for FPV building bingo
pretty much!
One of those things.... Its so hard its easyđ... Just set all escs to spin normal "motor 1 cw motor 2 ccw motor 3 cw motor 4 ccw......... run em up in bf.... If any dont run like above.. swap 2 of 3 leads... easy
He has to be new

Just sometimes the better you get, you can miss simple dumb things -- I completely setup a quad and it, checked motor order, direction etc etc.. tested and it flipped out, I fiddled with it for hours, like a mad scientist and gave up for the day, came back the next day, did I really forget "Motor direction is reversed" tick box yes what a dumb arse -- nothing to see here
for me, I always* follow a pragmatic approach to building, I go through the motions and process, whether I think it's right or not.
Except this time, I was under a bit of time pressure to get it done so wasn't as pragmatic as I normally am, and then problems.
Which is why the solution was to come back, follow that pragmatic approach so I knew it would be correct.
