#HoI4 #HeartsofIron4 - Hry
Thanks for all the feedback everyone, I'm happy to see so many of you found this useful! If you ever want to pop in and say hi, check out my Twitch.tv channel and let me know you found me from here, I'd love to play some Hearts of Iron 4 for you!: www.Twitch.tv/MahDryBread
Oh yeah and if you stopped watching less than a minute in because you got confused by a front line, just watch a few more seconds and you'll get to the part where I say I'll show you how to do that in great detail, later in the video.
Yes, I had to write this part in 5 years after the video came out, because for 5 straight years I've had comments of people pausing and complaining about "The line thing". It's kinda funny, search through the comments by newest, you'll see them.
If you can't make it a full minute into the 35 minute grand strategy game tutorial without pausing, saying you don't understand, and giving up, then I can't really help you. There is no way you could understand the game in the first minute of the video, it's cool. Just keep watching, absorb what you can, and it will start to make sense in time. No one learns a grand strategy game in under a minute.
Now don't give up on yourself! You can figure this game out, it's not rocket science. You'll be having fun with it before you know it!
Mah-Dry-Bread - Gameplay & Streams! I used 90 divisions to fight ussr and I lost lol
very very nice Video. But even better, what if it had categories
Which Paradox game would be a good one to start with if you don't want to buy a ton of dlc's? thanks
You should have said "Play Hearts of Iron "4" you"
;)
Mah-Dry-Bread - Gameplay & Streams! Such a complicated game
THANK GOD THIS EXISTS. The ingame âtutorialâ is literally just a new game where you have to figure everything out yourself
Throws you into to the game, tells you how to move around and then you're Italy in a war with Ethiopia.
@@samwarren6008 And they dont even tell you on how to build your army properly
@@samwarren6008 seems historically accurate to me
So true.
@@samwarren6008 I couldn't even manage to get to the second part of the tutorial. Paradox tutorials are horrible. I figured everything on my own with online guides to learn how to play EU4 and I believe HOI4 will be added to that list too.
"You've already read the title of the video, so let's not waste any time." = You immediately have my like, my comment, and my subscribe and I don't even know what you make videos about.
Thanks! Mostly let's plays for the last 8 or so years, but I also do a lot of live streams and tips/guide videos.

"Let's not waste any time" THANK YOU.
God bless CZcamsrs that cut to the chase.
Way better than the official tutorials. Paradox's tutorials are usually something like throwing someone who doesn't know how to swim into a pool and saying, *"Now whatever you do, don't drown!"*
Paradox tutorials are like chicos Tacos in El Paso. Everybody tells you to go there, its the best place ever. Its a must for every traveler or tourists.
After you eat there and you get bloody runs. Those same people then tell you to "GTFO of El Paso. Never come back and take your pinche(fucking) diarrhea with you".
Paradox: Alright just keep your population over 0
Still remenber learning how to play HOI3, more complex than HOI 4 some years ago, and they didnt teach a F. Just was more like: this the window to make investigations, this the window for production,.... Have fun!đ
Thanks to the youtuber Marco Antonio, and another how show what does the little icons, currently a know a bit more (currently, playing as UK, defending succesfully France and kicking the GermĂĄn ass)
TF2 gameplay (the tutorials are meh)
Now, seriously, after a couple of hours i managed to wipe out UK, France and im planing to invade America (i used the berlin-moscow alliance)
Can we all just thank this dude for responding to most comments about people have trouble with the game 6 months after this video released? I donât see other youtubers doing this
I'm just really passionate about getting people into these games, so I want to make sure I help as much as I can. Lots of CZcamsrs don't reply to comments after this long because it's hard to keep up and you don't get paid for comments. I can respect that, they have things to do with their time, but personally I just really want to share games like this with people.
Mah-Dry-Bread - Gameplay & Streams! Wow that shows commitment. Thanks

God damn it, this game is harder than math

I played as italy, im kind of winning in ethiopia, but 11 divisions cant even conquer a province with 4 division lmao, im attacking it from 3 sides, 1 tank division and nothing.
Be humble. I lost as Germany to the Netherlands...
Does anyone else feel that satisfaction when youâre actually taking over territories but youâre absolutely clueless on how youâre doing it?
YESSS
OMFG YES. IM NEW TO THE GAME AND I CANT EVEN TAKE A SINGLE PROVINCE. BUT WHEN I DO SO I LITERALLY CELEBRATE
Step 1: Build factories
Step 2: Research industry and stuff
Step 3: Train divisions
Step 4: Draw frontline and make offensive plan
Step 5: Declare war and activate plan
Step 6: Repeat until world is conquered
For me:
-train troops
- build factories
- research
Then same, but with my allies (not with the Allies, but my allies)
Yeah I remember after doing tutorial first time, then jumping in feeling all cocky. Picked the Reich, researched, trained etc...got the Rhineland back, declared war on Netherlands and got my shit stomped by France and the UK. Probably shouldâve thought about allies first. Plus I had every single division and armored vehicle, all lined up in the border. Was kind of funny thinking back on it.
@@nater3312 Wait you aren't suppose to put all of your divisions in one spot? oops
chewchewtrain how can I do that
Bc I donât know much about it but it affects supply and attrition, the more units you have packed into one territory, the faster youâll run out of supply and the faster they will get tired. Thatâs why when you fight on a bridge when you outnumber the enemy 10 to 1 you will most likely lose. It all depends on your divisions combat width but I barely know about that stuff itâs best to watch a video about this. I hope I helped clear some stuff up
Trying to figure out this game has kind of given me an appreciation for the people that actually led these countries and armies in actual history. If it's this difficult in a video game that, as complicated as it is, is only a fraction of what would go into it all in real life, then I can't even imagine being a world leader or general or something like that in WWII, or really any era..
You are correct that as complex as paradox games can be, they are nothing compared to the actual experience of that level of responsibility. The average person has no idea what actually goes into conducting a war... from any side, doesn't matter. To organize a war, the amount of preparation, manpower, workforce, trade/commerce considerations, politics, logistics, strategy, tactics, economics, are just a few of the variables that have to be contended with. Going to war is probably the most monumental and massive undertaking that humans can organize. Don't forget beyond that, all these guys were human too. They had family's with drama and relationship issues, depression, drug abuse, and all the normal difficulties of human life. Most people have trouble balancing their full time 40 hour work week with everything else. You begin to realize just how committed and engrossed in it all a man would have to be; to be a major leader in historical events like this... just... insane.
Amen brothers
That's why I love Paradox games, they put focus on historical situation as best as one can get with warfare. Heart of Iron is more of the military side, Supreme Ruler is more of the Civilian side. They do a good job and what running a country REALLY is like.
To be fair, games like these, while simplifying everything, still put you in the seat of the ultimate micromanager. Leaders like Stalin and Hitler in real life werenât picking which things to research, or hand picking which factories will produce what. All of the things you do in this game as one person, in real life, are ordained by entire bureaucracies. While obviously it isnât any easier in real life either, you at least have your one role that you do, and leave the rest to everybody else.
That's why Supreme Ruler is more accurate because you can literally play the game by doing nothing.

@Chilly Chick Mastering it is why it's hard. You could understand the basics of the game in 1 hour but people who played over 1000 hours are still called beginners by the masters who have put their life into the game. It's like learning how to play piano, the beginning might be easy for a lot of people but actually taking time to master the instrument will take many, many years.
@Chilly Chick You're super cool
Chilly Chick youre... uh.. chill.. lol
@Chilly Chick I love your calm and chill response
Video on using navy forces would be cool. I could finally play as Japan and know what I'm doing.
Can do! I'm just gonna wait for that next patch, it's looking like naval combat is gonna get overhauled along with adding fuel production to the game.

Had that happen to me with Aurora 4x until the turns took way too long to load, and so I dumped it... now I'm here.
This is an incredibly impressive production. The lack of verbal mistakes and stutters over 45 minutes with what sounds like no script (outline at most) covering so much so well. 10/10 wish I was even close to this good at tutorials.
Playing civ 6 is like doing addition and subtraction playing HOI4 is like algebra 1 in the sixth grade.
lol feels more like calculus imo
Youâre the only person who can make a simple tutorial that covers everything u need, and do it in an easy to understand way!
Great tutorial! I just got started and was completely overwhelmed by all the options (despite being very familiar with Paradox games and having perfecly mastered HOI2 10 years ago or EU4). You solved that in half an hour, thanks a lot.
Whenever I first got this game and saw the in game menus I started screaming in confusion. Now since I've watched this video I actually understand what 99% of the buttons do. Thanks for how descriptive you were too, it really does help.
I donât even have a PC, I have no idea what Iâm doing here.

Thank you so much. I got the game and was so confused. I had no clue what I was doing and why my invasions of other countries wouldnt work. Now I understand everything

It's absolutely cringy thinking you're good at the game with 100 hours.
100h is nothing lel
I have 200 hours Iâm serious
And i got it 3 weeks ago
This video is actually so good. He actually explains things well and doesn't overly complicate them, he gets straight to the point and simplifies it.
I have SLOUGHED through about a dozen HOI4 intro videos so far and this one is the BEST that I have seen. So many others get bogged down in the submenu minutia . . . but this covers the basics and that is all I need for NOW. Thank you so much !!
I just bought HOI4 today and man... i thought HOI3 was hard to get into because the initial complexity and the overwhelming UI, but this tutorial has helped exponentially - thanks dude. I love grand strategy and Paradox games in general ;( self-confessed CK2 addict) however I always dread the inevitable 20-hour learning curve, although to be fair the payoff is beyond rewarding. I think I'll get Imperator Rome next, then cop both EU4 and Stellaris in the next big Steam sale. I recently transitioned from console to PC gaming and the only regret I've had thus far is that I hadn't done it sooner.
Great video bro, keep the great content coming. Subscriber well and truly earned. I think I'll check out a few more of your videos.
Thanks for the well made tutorial. So many just get bogged down on nonsense-you did a great job keeping it as concise and relevant as possible!
Thanks, I'm happy you found it helpful!
I was looking for a ui tutorial and this is exactly what i wanted thank you
this is the best guide, this is one of my favorite games now and I've poured so many hours into it in the past week. thank you
This is so helpful, the tutorial got me vaguely in the right direction but more felt like learning how to open menus, thanks a ton man, this is awesome
i love youtubers who dont click bait or make the video longer for ad revenue.
you are a real one man!
I'm 31 minutes in! Going to watch this again once the game is actually done downloading! Thanks for the tutorial! Can't wait to play!
Thanks you so much! I was debating getting hoi4 because of its complexity and I felt I would just give up. But thanks to you, I feel confident in my abilities! You deserve a lot more subs.
4 minutes in and i think im gonna learn a lot about this game in this tutorial. You explain things in a way that i understand even something.
Subscribed.
FINALLY a video that explains the basics. Too many videos delve into complex math and use fancy terms that beginners like myself don't understand. I played HOI2 a ton growing up and, after about a decade away from it, I came back to try HOI4. I greatly appreciate your dumbing down the complex terms for players like me just getting into this grand strategy game. The first several hours of playing is a steep learning curve (only played maybe 4hrs myself) and videos like this help tremendously. Keep up the good content!
This was really well done. I enjoyed your voice, the editing, and the pace at which you covered everything. I would love another video.
If you check out the description, you can find the playlist where I did a video just like this for Crusader Kings 2. I'm happy you enjoyed!

For the love of God, THANK YOU!... I dont want to listen to a very long tutorial and in the end i will forget everything... this is nice
Thanks so much! I watched 2 or 3 other tutorial, but still had no clue what was going on. This really helped! (Btw thanks for not having like a10 minute long intro)
I've struggled learning this game (started/stopped many times) - your tutorial makes HOI a bit easier to understand. I'll watch part of the Romania play through to see how to get at least a decent start (as Germany). Appreciate the effort you put into making these videos.

Really great video for beginners! Got the game yesterday, played the tutorial and then Sweden up until I had my ass handed to me on a silver plater lol. Your tutorial really helped me understand more about the game and how to use these menus and whatnot. Well done!
(Really hope you have that naval video, 'cause I rage quit when my entire navy let Vichy France (a whole army) land right next to Stockholm lol)

Good video. Helped cement a few things about the game that didnt make much sense before. Would be lovely if we could get a video on how to manage our different resources. Please do a navy video so I can understand what goes on when somone plays as Britain or Japan
well you dont need a video for that. Until the new navy update comes out, there is literally no reason to build anything else but battleships and carriers. Unless you just need to quickly get coverage for a naval invasion, then just build some subs.
navy will change with the next update so it wont happen. but till then, as a navy heavy nation (america/england/japan) you just want to poop out carriers first, battleships second. then you need some cruisers for aa protection/screening and plenty of destroyers to soak up damage for your better ships. use tiny destroyer groups to protect trade routes from submarines. and build submarines if you want to take out a trade route, in stealth. a good composition standard to follow is 4 carriers, 4 battleships, 16 light cruisers 8 heavy cruisers and 24 destroyers. but you can always change it a bit if you struggle. just remember that bigger ships generally are stronger due to armor and range, and carrier wins against it all. but needs protection. just try to remember the function of ship types like this: carriers bomb all to death but need protection, battleships are tough ships that destroy all within range but needs protection from air and torpedos, heavy cruisers are a cheap man's battleship with a jack of all trades role (can be used to do damage but also screen), light cruisers kill destroyers, enemy air and do screening. and destroyers are cheap ships to sacrifice and screen all other ships. and can kill submarines.
- dont use submarines for naval battles unless you are just trying to spam sea dominance to get a port invasion across :). just stick to intercepting and killing cargo/transport ships enroute :)
Just stumbled on your channel, first video of yours I've seen, just want to say going straight to the point of the video is really appreciated. Wish it was more common.
