Generally a sequential gearbox in a performance setup produces 'pops and bangs' when changing gears due to the fact shifting is done without the use of the clutch, so an ignition or fuel cut is used to 'unload' torque from the gearbox allowing it to shift through to the next gear.
With a synchromesh gearbox we can introduce 'flat shifting' which will incorporate a fuel or ignition cut and as a side effect produce similar noises, however, it doesn't necessarily make shifting any faster depending on your specific box.
What Andre doesn't discuss are 'pops and bangs' tunes that are sold for that purpose alone. These give no performance benefits alone, and generally is the result of poor ignition timing (overly retarded) or extra fuel being injected on deceleration (hence the lack of any performance gains, for a performance or motorsport applications this actually decreases it). This question was just one taken from the Q&A session of a free live lesson, linked below.

I figured out that when I rev-matched downshifts in my 07 WRX, it would afterfire and I did it at every opportunity 😅 (had a catless turbo-back, so that helped).
This happens in my 370 when I briefly delay up shifting after engaging the clutch (like half a sec if that) When I use higher octane it seems to do whenever I drive it hard.
2017 challenger 3.6 does this from 1st to second to 3ed gear sometimes. When going down hill and rpms gowns down
Pop/crackle tunes are lame. Pops and bangs because your car is nuts is rad.
My cars slow, stock tune and still pops and bangs. Where do I fit in.
I see it all the time with DSG gearboxes making small pops on upshift.
i was able to tune the pop and bang into my standalone during shifts and deceleration.. but takes a lil knowledge to your ecu and the tuning world .... peace n love to all build on an have fun.
Looks like all of the worlds dog boxes ended up in my city :D
...then we must come from the same city :)
My supercharged busa pops well on button shift when it's pinned .
Always makes me smile 😃
Unburned fuel in the exhaust should never be the intent. Burning fuel to keep her spinnin is for race cars, not your bank owned drawer-dropper.
Can this be achieved on a sportsbike (constant mesh gearbox) by altering ignition maps in the deceleration cell area? I know you can get decel pops by doing this but specifically interested in upshift pops.
im also here because I have the same question. my ECU has like a built-in quickshift backfire feature, but you can't make it only turn on above a certain RPM, so it will try to backfire if you shift at like 4k RPM which is a bit shit :D
So tryna work out how I can map it in manually
@charliesmith874 oddly enough mine, does. I have a full exhaust on my 2023 r3 and nothing else. It'll pop on upshifts, downshift, and decel. All it takes is a slight flick of the wrist. When you're riding normally and cruising, it burbles occasionally.
@@dudleym1956 yeah thats pretty standard when you do full exhaust without a tune (especially when you do air intake too), cuz it runs slightly leaner and gets hotter than usual (and also full exhaust means nothing stopping those pops/burbles from being heard)
I want full on backfires haha
@charliesmith874 lmaooo you're a madman, I love it, haha. With the r3 from what I've heard doing an intake one, the r3 isn't really worth it unless you're doing ITB's which I why I only have exhaust, r6 throttle tube and a whole bunch of other little things
@@charliesmith874 also the r3 and quite a few other stock bikes sound like vacuum cleaners when you rev them with no exhaust lmaoo.
In terms of a dct or auto shift for torque reduction, what timing values are usually targeted during gear shift.
what's the purpose for this ? does this also happen with stock cars that have pops and bangs ?
There is no purpose, in a race car it is a 'side effect' as explained.
For a stock/OEM car it depends. Some cars do it these days for 'aesthetics', others do it for the same reasons explained here - Taz.
I once set my car on fire, because someone forgot to put my left exhaust downpipe thermo shield and there was a bunch of cables hanging which were not meant to be there as well. My muffler fell off that night and the sound was amazing, so I couldn't resist but to drive it and intentionally kick the throttle between shifts to make a bang and so the temperatures got really high and I was lucky to catch the fire quick with the extinguisher.
My stock g35 does that between shifts after I manual swapped
You get a pop of anti lag sometimes on upshifts with a syncro gearbox too, basically you just need a so called flame tune :P
That’s the lamest shit for real……..
Dude I have a bmw 128i nd my exhaust popped 1 to 2 to 3 it felt nice asf but idk if it was supposed to do that, it’s Catless btw if dat helps
Love my pops and bangs
If you tune pops and crackles into your tune, you are worse than those carolina squat trucks
Its the tuning equivalent to cast replica wheels and rally mudflaps on lowered street cars.
Nah, wheels and mud flaps also have practical uses 😉
That said, everyone starts somewhere and I know I did questionable things to my first car thinking I was hot shit. I was wrong but also had fun and learnt things I otherwise wouldn't have for better or worse 😎 - Taz
@@hpa101 my apologies my joke was a bit too harsh! thanks for the reply
@@yuno3364 not at all mate, you can be as harsh as you like! We do have a sense of humour and sometimes getting ripped on something is what helps you think about why that might be happening in the first place, go nuts 🤓
I just soften the blow for the odd chap scrolling who will progress, but there are also plenty of people out there who know better and if they can't laugh at themselves then tuning something like this in to gain attention was a poor move anyway 🤣 - Taz.
@@spikejones2776 Nah, worse. At least those still have a function ie. rolling and mud flapping. Popcorn maps, and fake engine noises in modern cars, are the car equivalent of annoying pr0n stars who make screaming fake orgasms noises.
That is lies.... my car has standard gear box with stage 1 remap and pops and bangs and I get huge flames on gear change.....it's to do with how the car was remapped!!!!!!!!!
You got us! How can we use real world experience and explanations to argue with your reply that is full of hands off facts, relevant details and science eh! 😅 - Taz.
In 1969, tunes were not the reason for pops and burble. What was?
carbs not as accurate / precise as fuel injection, meaning larger change of unburnt fuel being injected into cylinder = pops and burbles when off throttle
