for the white and black foreigners. i will make it easier for you to understand what a samurai is. a samurai is a noble warrior from a noble family that serve a royal family. it is the equivalent of a knight for you westerners. just because a japanese person is holding a weapon, it doesn't mean he is automatically a samurai. just like in western culture. there is a big difference between a knight and a foot soldier or a mercenary. just because a white guy is fighting in a war in the medieval era it doesn't mean he is a knight./

Nobody complained about Tom Cruise in the last samurai movie, a white guy going to feudal Japan, and made a samurai.. fictional character, but yasuke is a real person that came close to nagato! And has somewhat of a story…
While Cruise’s character, Nathan Algren, was fictional, he and several other important characters were all inspired by real people. Algren was based on Jules Brunet, a French military officer who played a key role in the events of that time. Ken Watanabe’s character, Katsumoto, was based on Saigo Takamori, another key figure of the era. Also, Algren was never made Samurai. They gave him a sword and told him he was cool, but he was never anything more than a captured enemy turned friend. Also literally everyone complained. There’s like 10 ppl in the world who have seen the movie and understand that it’s not a “white savior” movie, it’s completely the opposite. The samurai and their culture/way of life save him. Every single time someone mentions it, what they’re really doing is rehashing the Paul Mooney bit about it from Chappelle’s Show.
That movie did get criticized a lot, and it was 20 years ago. He got his ass kicked throughout the movie and was never the leader, he served the leader and fought with them. And it was more about him learning their culture than going around killing people.
Man rocky(the fictional movie character) was inducted into the REAL Boxing HOF. They really can't say nothing about this after doing something that ridiculous
Tom Cruise was a storytelling tool. His character was based on a real French person that became a samurai IRL but even then, his character was not the actual main lead. It was Katsumoto and his men.
The main issue people have is that this is the first AC game set in feudal japan. So we expected to play as a male Japanese protagonist. Having Yasuke in the game isnt a problem. He could had been a mintor or companion. He could even have his own side story or DLC. We're just upset we didnt get to play as a Japanese man like we wanted and expected. Is it wrong to want to play as a Japanese man in a Japanese setting? Just imagine the first AC game set in aincent Africa and you play as a Chinese man. Everyone would be upset.
exactly, old AC players have been dreaming of an Asian themed game ever since, now we got this mess. (this hurt especially to those Asian Americans who loved AC games and wanted a game that represent their culture, but NO, you gotta play as a 6 feet 2 black man in feudal Japan)
People are mad because the game is featuring a black and female lead characters. Yasuke was the first foreigner to earn the Rank of Samurai. The racists were so riled up yesterday, they took to Wikipedia to change Yasuke's rank classification from Samurai to Weapons bearer in order to perpetuate the false claim that he was never a Samurai and a glorified pet/well treated slave. Gaming racists havent taken their pointed hoods off this fast since they saw Tanya in MK1 with a natraul black hairstyle.
He wasn't just the first foreigner, he was also the first gay foreigner to earn that rank. We know what Nobunaga and his "personal attendants" were up to. They're just homophobic.
Because the character was not a real samurai only an Oda retainer and Ubisoft catering to wokeness. What would happen if they made an assassins creed in Africa with a white guy as the main character.
Now when it come to game ownership, I prefer physical copies as much as possible. I had one game get removed from my library back in the day and I said never again lol
Assassins creed always had a small amount of actual history to it and it’s not impossible for black people to have been samurai’s it’s actually in history so the people that are upset are either racist or just Ubisoft haters🤷🏽♀️

For people caring about "Historical Accuracy", From a Japanese. Was Yasuke Samurai? -Yes and No... He's kinda. Officially served Oda Nobunaga, who is one of the most important person of Sengoku-Jidai(Samurai era), got paid as server, and had face to face contact with him. It was obviously different from ordinal Ashigaru(low-class non-samurai warrior). However, Yasuke didn't have important role at all. @@DJBubbleBoy yasuke first crossed paths with Nobunaga in 1581, when Valignano requested permission from the warlord to leave the country-a customary practice in an era before passports, according to Lockley. Nobunaga was fascinated by the color of Yasuke’s skin, which he initially believed to be covered in black paint. As Lockley explains, the daimyo ordered Yasuke to be washed, but his skin color remained unchanged. Nobunaga threw a welcome party for his visitor, who officially entered his service soon after. The Chronicle of Lord Nobunaga, a 17th-century book written by one of Nobunaga’s followers, describes Yasuke as “[appearing] to be 26 or 27 years old. … This man looked robust and had a good demeanor. What is more, his formidable strength surpassed that of ten men.” Other chronicles characterize the samurai as an intelligent, imposing figure who stood more than six feet tall. He belonged to “the very small entourage around Nobunaga, which [was] probably around 30 to 50 [warriors], mainly young men, many of [whom were Nobunaga’s] lovers as well,” Lockley says. Traditionally, older warriors like Nobunaga, then in his early 50s, mentored younger warriors and developed sexual relationships with them. No evidence indicates that Yasuke and Nobunaga were lovers. Yasuke (弥助 or 弥介) was a man, likely of African origin, who served as a servant and retainer to the Japanese daimyō Oda Nobunaga in 1581-1582, during the Sengoku period.[2] He was retained by the daimyō as a koshō (小姓, page) for a period of 15 months until Nobunaga's death in the Honnō-ji Incident.[3][4] What is a retainer in Japanese? Given to the Museum by Hereford Museum in 1942. This is a suit of retainer armour. A retainer refers to a vassal in feudal Japan, usually a samurai providing military services. Some fans accused Yasuke of not being a “real” samurai, calling him just a “retainer.” But a retainer is still a samurai-the term refers to a vassal in feudal Japan, usually a samurai offering military services.4 Retainers were basically freelance samurai from less powerful clans. They would be "retained" to a lord, and receive a stipend, housing, and resources in return for military service. Retainers were still samurai. Yasuke was favored by Nobunaga and was by his side until the Honnouji incident, where he ran to Nobunaga's son's residence and dueled the Akechi.

I think it’s refreshing to introduce a new character that is both unique and symbolic of how diverse strong heroes can look. Bigotry and wanton discrimination are being normalized. Too many negative voices are showing up oppressing diverse depictions of characters in video games and movies. It’s not 1980s or 90s or early 00s, where Caucasian characters dominated the multimedia landscape, it’s 2024. The media we consume should reflect how diverse we are. No one complained when Tom Cruise was the last samurai. No one said a word when Nioh made a huge splash with a white blonde haired blue eyed protagonist whom fought like a samurai and helmed the entire franchise on his back. It’s only when a poc is appropriating another culture is when the bigots cry out. Well tough! You had your turn. It’s ours now. At least the female is Japanese. No one is saying anything about her. It shouldn’t be about color. Give the game a chance. Reserve judgment after you’ve played the game.
Ah so you want all character to be turned black, real and fictional, Tom cruise was not the last samurai, ken watanabe was, Nioh is completely fictional other then the characters, as sorry to burst you bubble but William Adams was the first non Japanese samurai, not Yasuke, and William was actualy important to Japanese history, unlike Yasuke. Stay in your lane bud.
@@lucasbelmonte2832 I’m not saying Yasuke was first of anything. It’s not about whether one is better than the other but how the gaming community is reacting to a poc who is making a transition into a space that is predominantly taken up by Asians and Caucasians. I’m well aware of William Adam’s historical importance in Japan. It’s not what I’m arguing for. The point I’m making is that Yasuke was apart of Japanese history as well. The backlash is glaring highlighting the gaming communities lack of acceptance toward poc. Tom Cruise was top billing for The Last Samurai and the way the film was commercially advertised placed him front and center. My dude was even dressed as a samurai, and the film was from his pov. Need I say more? No one wants all characters to be black. Yet diversity should eclipse the old way of things where most lead characters in gaming and movies was a white man. There are plenty of black, brown, red and yellow folks willing and ready to take the reins for once. I may of been more understanding of the backlash if the female shinobi was not in the game. However Ubisoft is offering players a chance to play as a Japanese shinobi. How cool is that? AC cinematic trailers always look dope and hopefully the story is solid. The one thing I’m skeptical about is the release date. Idk I was hyped when they announced they were finally working on a AC game set in Japan but I would’ve liked to see it at least released next summer in 2025. Only because their last game AC Mirage came out last year so I’m skeptical about whether this one has had enough time to cook in the oven because like I said AC cinematics are always dope but the games don’t always live up to they hype like they used to. I actually really liked AC Valhalla so if this one gets that treatment or even better I’ll be satisfied but I don’t want them to just pump this one out too quick trying to ride the hype train. Yasuke is also a really dope character to add. Say what you want but with what little we know about him it’s an interesting little story in history. And since we don’t know a whole lot you can make some really interesting stories with him and get creative with the characters. But he hasn’t been portrayed very well in media. I don’t mean he’s been portrayed offensively just that the stuff he’s been in has been pretty wack😂. It does feel like most stuff that adds him gets excited about hitting their diversity quota and thinking the headline “black samurai” will sell their show or whatever. But then they forget to actually write a good show😄. Like they spent the whole time celebrating all the hype online and then a few months before the show is supposed to air they panic and just throw something together😂. Like bro I’m here and I’m interested but you forgot to write anything good. Like a lot of time it’s not even pandering to black people with how he’s portrayed. He’s just written boring in boring stories. Like we don’t know a whole lot about him irl so that’s where it’s time to get creative and give him an interesting personality but nope we get a stoic boring black samurai fighting magical wizards and robot mechs or whatever 😂.

Fact:
Yasuke
Yasuke was the only African and first non-Japanese samurai. His story began around 1579 in Edo Japan. Not much is known about his life before arriving in Japan. Some say he was from the country of Mozambique and came to Japan on a ship with an Italian missionary named Alessandro Valignano on an inspection tour
He was never a samurai, no historical record of him ever having the title.
Yasuke was an honorary samurai. He wasn't technically a samurai in terms of being raised from birth and into the social class. Nobunaga did made him an honorary samurai through his retainer rank (which is one of the highest rank you can get as an actual samurai) where he was in charge of all affairs when Nobunaga was away + Nobunaga trusted him with his life. He was his right-hand man.
George Washington was a tyrant, the pope was wielding a magic apple, we was fighting gods, but a black man being a samurai that had actually existed is too far for these people 😅

I agree, I'm not into race swapping either, but this isn't want one of those times. This is an actual historical figure that is a part of Japanese history, and they hate it.
Though Yasuke was already a skilled warrior, he likely underwent additional martial arts training upon joining Nobunaga’s army.

In 16th-century Japan, the title of samurai spoke to rank and was loosely defined as a warrior in the service of a lord or another warrior. By 1581, Nobunaga employed thousands of samurai-yet Yasuke was the first foreign-born warrior to enter their ranks.
Yasuke (弥助 or 弥介) was a man, likely of African origin, who served as a servant and retainer to the Japanese daimyō Oda Nobunaga in 1581-1582, during the Sengoku period.[2] He was retained by the daimyō as a koshō (小姓, page) for a period of 15 months until Nobunaga's death in the Honnō-ji Incident.[3][4]
What is a retainer in Japanese?
Given to the Museum by Hereford Museum in 1942. This is a suit of retainer armour. A retainer refers to a vassal in feudal Japan, usually a samurai providing military services.
Some fans accused Yasuke of not being a “real” samurai, calling him just a “retainer.” But a retainer is still a samurai-the term refers to a vassal in feudal Japan, usually a samurai offering military services.4
Retainers were basically freelance samurai from less powerful clans.
