The story of Yasuke is more myth than legend which works for AC and how they like to bend history. What we do know about him as fact is that he was a servant under Nobunaga (it is still debated if he was ever made Samurai), the rest is up to interpretation which leaves a blank canvas to create narratives.
I will not buy the game however because I’m done with Ubisoft.
It was not really a servant more of a weapons and sword bearer. We do know that he was offered land and a title. Was he offered to become a samurai? No one knows. But he did fight in a couple of battles as a bod guard.

There is still debate if he ever fought in any of the battles in Nobunaga’s campaigns. Notice how many articles on his battle experience say he “would” have fought in them. Because we have very little on paper on a person people like to call “legendary”. He likely did fight in the Honno-ji incident but once again his contributions there are still unknown besides the fact that he was captured.
More than likely he received the benefits of a Samurai because Nobunaga couldn’t officially make him one because in order to become one you had to have years of training (most start at a young age), be of a Samurai family or adopted into one.
Once again, this game js fine as long as people don’t use this as a basis to go out and try to bend Japanese history.
Yasuke is a cool story but he was in no way a relevant part of Japanese history.

Actually there are different ways you prefer to name a Ninja, it was around the 1950s that it finally became just Ninjas.
The correct name is Shinobi no mono which means those who hide in the shadows or something along the lines

Fun fact: If he was still alive now, Chadwick Boseman was actually going to play Yasuke for a movie, and that Yasuke is one of the boss/characters in Nioh and Nioh 2 where he referred to as the Obsidian Samurai.

Ezio was real though he was a thief when in the history books. Ravensloft was real as English archeologists have found a Viking village exactly where the village was in Valhalla. The village is still being uncovered as we don’t know who was there but we have evidence it was definitely Norwegian Vikings as the coins tell so.
I always wished for an AC with an Japan setting but im still not really that excited for it since its Ubisoft and they keep messing up.
Not to mention it's overpriced, same shit as their Star Wars game.

This will technically be the third time we've played as a real life historical figure: Leonidas in the prologue of Odyssey, Jack the Ripper in Syndicate's DLC, and now Yasuke in Shadows.
They've confirmed that switching characters will be similar to AC Syndicate with the Frye twins: Naoe will have her own missions, Yasuke will have his own missions, there will be joint missions where you play as both, and you can switch between them whenever you want in the open world.
That honestly sounds effing amazing and I hope that this game does good.
Those were DLC's. Yasuke is being used as the male MC for no reason apart from cultural appropriation, and Ubisoft has admitted as such.
@distortedsoul27 ok and? It's not like they are just inventing a black samurai character. Yasuke is an actual person in Japanese history. They may take some liberties with how accurate their portrayal of history is but thats normal for Ubisoft. Quit finding faults just to find faults. I'm holding my breath until gameplay but this already seems very exciting.
The point of assassins creed was to feel like you're a part of that particular society. That's a big part of the immersion.
It will break immersion being a huge black guy walking around and standing out no matter where I go.
@IanJenn356094 the difference is that Yasuke isn't a made up character. He's a real life historical figure and this will be the third time we've gotten to play as such a character. First was Jack the Ripper, second was Leonidas. Only gameplay will tell if the game will be good.
Yasuke shows up in the Sengoku period setting when Oda Nobunaga was at the height of his power and drawing close to fully uniting warring Japan under his banner. Note that he wasn't actually a Samurai but a retainer of Oda Nobunaga. Retainers were able to be assigned land to develop and raise troops for their liege. Samurai were like the nobility of the time as Japan was for centuries ruled by the warrior class and the Shogun being the first among equals.
Even Nobunaga's successor and the second unifier of Japan, Toyotomi Hideyoshi wasn't a Samurai but due to Nobunaga's progressive and meritocratic tendencies he was allowed to serve in a positions that were previously only available to Samurai. Hideyoshi was able to unify Japan but was unable to rule in the same way as Shoguns did and was only made the Regent and Chancellor of Japan by the Emperor. He was to be succeeded by his son in the position but Japan once more descended into chaos and most of the warrior class rallied behind the Ieyasu Tokugawa the third and final unifier who was actually descended from the Minamoto clan, the progenitor of all Shogunal Clans. With Ieyasu's standing as a Samurai and his lineage, he was able to petition the Emperor to appoint him as Tai Shogun thus the Tokugawa Shogunate.
Nobunaga fascinated with Yasuke's stature only emphasized on him receiving similar training as that of a Samurai. His service to the nascent Oda clan was cut short some 15 months in with Nobunaga's assassination and it is from there that his actual story stops and the speculations begin. Some say he was sold back into slavery by Nobunaga's vassal Mitsuhide Akechi who betrayed and assassinated Nobunaga and that he later died in India; some accounts say that he went on to serve Hideyoshi the second unifier of Japan who succeeded Nobunaga after defeating the traitor Akechi; others say he was given to the Jesuit mission that operated in Japan with the consent of Nobunaga.
You can choose which character to use for every quest except a few personal quests, so you can play like 80% of the game with one and only use the other for their personal quests. The game brings many interesting new gameplay mechanics like the dynamic weather and seasons environment and the light source system, its clear they built the stealth a lot in this game! The characters will have skill trees with weapons, out of which I have to say Naoe's look really cool to me especially those gadgets she throws in the air to pierce the enemies.

I don't think they're going Woke. That word is loosing its meaning now. I think Ac Shadows would've been boring just have two Japanese protagonist. We've had so many games with Japanese samurai. One black samurai isn't gonna be bad.

So I had to look it up. Apparently shinobi and ninjas are the same thing. Difference is ninjas are Chinese while shinobi is Japanese. I literally googled it so I wasn’t being cringe. So if I’m wrong blame Google.

I won't be preordering this (especially since we haven't seen any gameplay yet), but I'll be keeping an eye on this game. It's really hard to get excited about anything tied to Ubisoft, especially with how predatory their micro-transactions can be. However, I want this game to be good. But I may wait for a sale.

I can say that I am so hype for this game 😄 also since you two ask about the Switching of characters, this game is using elements from AC Syndicate where you play as the Frye twins being Jacob and Evie Frye. You can switch between the two and play either brutal or stealth. While with this game having the same but different mechanics for both characters in this one with their own unique mechanics or skills.
So it depends on who is playing who, as Beth be good for brutal or Ken can while both of you can learn stealth more with our sneaky assassin. 😉 or you both take turns being brutal. Either way, have fun and keep eyes out for the gameplay once around PlayStation showcase or Ubisoft Forward event
Oda Nobunaga is considered one of the three unifiers of Japan with Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Both of them were under the Tokugawa Ieyasu banner. Nobunaga was minister of the Right while Hideyoshi was the Left minister. Tokugawa became leader of Japan by taking out rival clans through attrition or alliances. The Iga shinobi were wiped out by Nobunaga as they were technically Neutral but it was a political move hoping to take out the competition.
The Iga became spies and assassins for hire as the Tokugawa Shogunate tightened their grip on power. The Meiji restoration with introduction of technology from the west pretty much made the shinobi redundant and they became simple spies. There is only a single true shinobi left although he does not live near Iga. Unfortunately he is quite old and refuses to teach anyone.
Japan in all its history has never seen real lasting peace as something always happens. Even today with the loss of Abe, the hate for the new prime minister, the whole nuclear disaster, it just doesn’t end.
Oda Nobunaga is the first unifier; both Hideyoshi and Tokugawa were his subordinates. Ieyasu was the only autonomous Daimyo under Nobunaga's banner and was charged with the defence of the East against Takeda Shingen and the Hojo Clan as Nobunaga advanced North and West. Ieyasu and Nobunaga were childhood friends in Japanese stands as Ieyasu was a hostage of the Oda clan during the tenure of Nobunaga's father who had invaded Mikawa.
Hideyoshi was a competent retainer to Nobunaga who was instrumental in many of his victories and was tasked with some of Nobunaga's great endeavors most of the time being left to pick up the pieces when Nobunaga messes things up. At the time of Nobunaga's assassination, Hideyoshi was in command of Nobunaga's main forces fighting the Mori Clan in Chugoku and was able to capitalize on that advantage wiping out the traitors and subduing Nobunaga's sons. The only true opposition was Ieyasu who had since grown powerful as Nobunaga had left him to his own tools. After the defeat of the Takeda, Ieyasu's territories had doubled in size and his army was equally large. Ieyasu Tokugawa and Hideyoshi fought to a stalemate at Komaki-Nagakute but if you ask me Ieyasu won the battle; it was only due to Ieyasu's perception that he could win the battle but not the war as Hideyoshi had more troops coming in that made him reconcile with Hideyoshi and submit to him as a vassal. Ieyasu was in his 60s when he eventually took power after Hideyoshi's passing and formed the Tokugawa Shogunate. He actually abdicated to his son some time later and retired from politics. He only returned for the siege of Osaka to snuff out the last Toyotomi holdout.

Ninja and Shinobi is the same thing. Ninja is more of a Chinese word, while Shinobi is Japanese.
I'm Japanese, and 忍者（ninja）is also a Japanese word like 忍（shinobi）. For instance, there are several words meaning 侍（samurai）such as 武士（mononofu）,武士（bushi）。

I've not been an Assassin's Creed fan for a long time. Just kinda fell out of the series. But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little bit hyped for this game, primarily because you get to play as Yasuke.

Ppl be really missing the poing of Assassin's Creed games, they don't teach you history, they motivate you to learn on your own, they even added the Discovery Mode since Origins. If Yasuke was indeed a Samurai or not, it's not officially known, that's why Ubisoft takes his story and makes him a samurai so we can experience it AND learn more about it.

I don’t play assassin’s creed, just never really been my thing, but it irks me how much cultural appropriation is present here.
I drop off the series midway through but even i hardly find this a problem, or that sensitive in any way. It's always the ppl that make it out to be. And ofc, the timing of devs doing this game too.
