Nioh is a new IP, meanwhile Assassin's Creed has always put the main spotlight on the original characters, and most of them originated in their respective settings. So having yet ANOTHER romanticized version of Yasuke instead of an original Japanese lead is not it. The dude is overused, straight up.
Doesn't matter if they bring William or any other historical figure to replace Yasuke, it would be preferable if they're still sticking with an original protag, even better if it's a Japanese man to go along with Naoe. Historical figures in AC games should stay in the supporting role.

How awesome and fitting for games is that?

You have many cool characters from this country and rhis period of time. And they picked slave and turned around his story. Leonardo lived in Italy and he was one of most important characters of his period. Leonidas was lacedemon and was born in Greece, he was one of most influencial after his death at hit gates. Yasuke? Yasuke is a pop culture icon in Japan who has his own anime and makes appearances in multiple Japanese games and media, including Samurai Warriors 5. And yes, he was in fact a Samurai.
When someone says that someone is a "retainer" they actually mean someone is a Kashin, or a member of a clan's Kashindan. You can think of a clan's Kashindan as basically its standing army, the soldiers it keeps... on retainer to fight wars at a moment's notice.
Ashigaru were, in contrast, peasant conscripts. (Like a militia.) They were levied at an individual clan's need and every able-bodied adult man within a clan's territory was expected to be capable of answering a call to arms, similar to the way it works in feudal Europe. If you were in a clan's Kashindan, you were considered a samurai.
Samurai during the Sengoku Period meant anyone who was a full-time soldier. The idea of samurai as being a rigid military caste that you had to be born into is an invention of the Edo Period. Now, to clarify, samurai *clans* were indeed aristocratic noble families that you had to be born into. Being a member of a clan's Kashindan did not mean you were a part of the clan, but you did not need to be part of the clan to be a samurai.
The concept of samurai actually predates the concept of samurai clans. The first samurai clans that emerged during the Heian Period were just full time soldiers who became nobles. Samurai then became a form of nobility, but a form of nobility you did not need to be born into.
Yasuke served as Oda Nobunaga's Kosho, which was a personal servant/bodyguard to a Busho or the samurai equivalent of a general or lord. Kosho, critically, were considered samurai. Yasuke... Was a samurai.

yasuke first crossed paths with Nobunaga in 1581, when Valignano requested permission from the warlord to leave the country-a customary practice in an era before passports, according to Lockley. Nobunaga was fascinated by the color of Yasuke’s skin, which he initially believed to be covered in black paint. As Lockley explains, the daimyo ordered Yasuke to be washed, but his skin color remained unchanged. Nobunaga threw a welcome party for his visitor, who officially entered his service soon after.
The Chronicle of Lord Nobunaga, a 17th-century book written by one of Nobunaga’s followers, describes Yasuke as “[appearing] to be 26 or 27 years old. … This man looked robust and had a good demeanor. What is more, his formidable strength surpassed that of ten men.” Other chronicles characterize the samurai as an intelligent, imposing figure who stood more than six feet tall. Though Yasuke was already a skilled warrior, he likely underwent additional martial arts training upon joining Nobunaga’s army.
Circa 1605 panel painting possibly featuring Nobunaga and Yasuke
The individual in green in the third panel from left is thought to be Nobunaga; the Black sumo wrestler in the fourth panel from left may be Yasuke. Public domain via Wikimedia Commons
In 16th-century Japan, the title of samurai spoke to rank and was loosely defined as a warrior in the service of a lord or another warrior. By 1581, Nobunaga employed thousands of samurai-yet Yasuke was the first foreign-born warrior to enter their ranks. He belonged to “the very small entourage around Nobunaga, which [was] probably around 30 to 50 [warriors], mainly young men, many of [whom were Nobunaga’s] lovers as well,” Lockley says. Traditionally, older warriors like Nobunaga, then in his early 50s, mentored younger warriors and developed sexual relationships with them. No evidence indicates that Yasuke and Nobunaga were lovers.
Yasuke (弥助 or 弥介) was a man, likely of African origin, who served as a servant and retainer to the Japanese daimyō Oda Nobunaga in 1581-1582, during the Sengoku period.[2] He was retained by the daimyō as a koshō (小姓, page) for a period of 15 months until Nobunaga's death in the Honnō-ji Incident.[3][4]
What is a retainer in Japanese?
Given to the Museum by Hereford Museum in 1942. This is a suit of retainer armour. A retainer refers to a vassal in feudal Japan, usually a samurai providing military services.
Some fans accused Yasuke of not being a “real” samurai, calling him just a “retainer.” But a retainer is still a samurai-the term refers to a vassal in feudal Japan, usually a samurai offering military services.4
Retainers were basically freelance samurai from less powerful clans. They would be "retained" to a lord, and receive a stipend, housing, and resources in return for military service.
Retainers were still samurai. Yasuke was favored by Nobunaga and was by his side until the Honnouji incident, where he ran to Nobunaga's son's residence and dueled the Akechi.

Most people wouldn't even complain If they could still trust Ubisoft. But they can't, because the track record proves that they will put the agenda above anything else and take things too far. For example: In AC Valhalla, a medieval viking based game, all of your allies within the main narrative were either gay or female. Not 1, not 2, but 3 male gay couples fighting alongside you in the big battle at the end. Of course things like this break immersion and suspension of disbelief, because it's just freaking ridiculous.

As an Asian person, this is how I can explain it to people who don't understand the criticism. Imagine the music industry releasing a documentary that says Eminem is the greatest and most influential hip-hop/rap artist of all time. Eminem is extremely talented but to give that title to a culturally Black audience is insulting.
And as an Asian person who's been waiting for an AC game to take place in Japan, all they had to was just keep it culturally Japanese. All of this controversy could've been avoided. If Yasuke had made an appearance in the game as an ally or DLC, I wouldn't have cared. Hell they could've made this game a Rush Hour duo with an Asian guy/Black guy story. It's annoying to see Asian men take a back seat in their own culture. But they would rather make a game that says "Hey black people, we're not racist anymore, here's your token black person to show you we're the good guys!" And we also get a girl boss who's a strong independent woman who doesn't need a man. It's phony and disingenuous.

The concept revolved around utilizing woman in the plan as the infiltrator since they could have greater access to high-profile environments via things like caregiving and sexuality and people were likely to lower their guard far more around women. The difference being the woman could be a member of the clan, but likely was a sister, wife, or daughter. Female shinobi, kunoichi, existed. Yasuke wasn’t actually a samurai. He was basically a slave brought over by Jesuit missionaries who was an oddity in Nobunaga’s court. He was given a wakizashi, a house, and was allowed to carry Nobunaga’s tools. All that said, even though he wasn’t historically a samurai and likely never fought in any battles this would hardly be the first game where he was depicted as one. Many Japanese games have him as a playable character or as a boss in some instances.

I watched the trailer twice and Yasuke’s presence alone has me interested more in the story. Even though I’m already a huge AC fan to the point where I play every game and read every comic and novel.
Fact, myth, legend Yasuke exists in the realm of history.
The very idea of a black man washing up ashore or brought to Japan as a slave and moving through a strange land from his perspective and becoming this legendary black samurai is extremely interesting.
That alone makes it stand out from other games. People are talking about it, people are debating it. Instead of just being another standard AC release it’s controversy for a certain group. People debating how real Yasuke was. If he really did all they say he did.
If it was a standard Japanese guy we saw all the posts. They’d say it’s Temu Ghosts of Tsushima, wish Ghosts of Tsushima, etc.
But because Yasuke is on the main promotion and said to be a major figure in the story. The game is already elevated above being just another Ghosts of Tsushima.
And with the controversy, expect more Yasuke media to be green lit. Another anime, live action show, movie, etc.

Here is a true question, How many characters in Assassin's Creed (AC 1 through AC Valhalla) were playable and if any of them were true historical people from the past? The ANSWER is very simple, "None."
All the "playable" characters in AC 1 through AC Valhalla were all fictional characters, Yasuke was a real historical person who was nothing more than a retainer, not a samurai.
Yasuke IS A REAL HISTORICAL BLACK MAN WHO WAS NOTHING BUT A RETAINER FOR Oda Nobunaga! "Real Historical Person," Yasuke was and is but a "Retainer." The other Assassin's Creed characters from Assassin's Creed 1 through Assassin's Creed Valhalla are "Fictional," characters that DO NOT EXIST IN ACTUAL HISTORY. Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad (Fictional Character), Ezio Auditore da Firenze (Fictional Character), Captain Edward James Kenway (Fictional Character), Adéwalé (Fictional Character), Aveline de Grandpré (Fictional Character), Bayek of Siwa (Fictional Character), Alexios and Kassandra (Fictional Characters), Basim Ibn Ishaq (Fictional Character), and others that are not based in our past historical history. That is why I always stated to other people that 80% is Fact because of True History for Assassin's Creed Video Games, then there is the 20% Fiction that has "People", Places, Items, and other things that are in the game, are not in our past history. Yasuke "IS A TRUE HISTORICAL PERSON IN JAPAN," NOT A FICTIONAL CHARACTER, you can say, "fantasy," all you want but we all know that Yasuke is a real black man who was a retainer, not trained to use the katana, he cleaned Nobunaga's Katana's and other weapons that is what a retainer does. Sorry to say in true historical words and more true blunt historical words Yasuke was a retainer meaning he was a servant to Oda Nobunaga. Not my words but in actual dictionary definitions, Retainer is a person attached or owing service to a household especially a: SERVANT or b: EMPLOYEE.
There’s discrepancies in Japanese history about Yasuke and we don’t know he was a retainer or a samurai that was trained. There is basically no actual documentation except for a few stories, but stories can change over time because of different perspectives, different things happening different mindset. Just like for example, that if you say something from a long time ago by word-of-mouth, then someone says it in a different word or words than that word-of-mouth or whatever you said can be different. And we cannot forget about WWII that many things could’ve been lost because of the war, and we may never know from certain items to certain documentations were burnt or been completely annihilated because of the two bombs, but we don’t know. I’m not saying that this can be a true story or not but all we know that he was nothing more than a retainer and that is it. I am sorry to say, but until there is actual more evidence like where is Yasuke Katana sword? Where is it? Does anyone know? Because if you have that sword and it has his name on it and approves that he was a samurai, but in the end, no sword, no proof that he was a samurai.
Both Greed and WOKE is the message and agenda on both UBISOFT and Sweet Baby Inc. and Black Gamer Girls, and DEI Money. There is no story or the Hero's Journey in this game. Assassin's Creed is just now a "Shadow Shell," of itself and an empty husk. You know if only the Baka writer read Japanese History a lot closer than instead of 2 characters to play, there could be only 1 character to play. There was an opportunity they could have used instead of a fictional black samurai character and in real history he was a retainer not a samurai. If only they read Japanese history carefully and throughly they could have made the only one Japanese Female Assassin Character. Combined both true history and fiction, Japanese women at the time did learn to use a particular weapon called, "Naginata," a Polearm weapon with a curved blade at the top. While the katana sword tends to be associated with male samurai of Japan, a distinctive weapon called the naginata has been traditionally associated with women and female fighters known as onna-bugeisha. This could have been the base of a Japanese Assassin's Creed Story, with a Japanese Woman who learned to use the Naginata and eventually learns the way of the Assassin's Brotherhood!
Do you know why they don’t want to make a game based in Africa, especially in Assassin’s Creed well because in actual history, many of the warring tribes enslaved their own kind. In about 90% or even 80% of the black population of today, don’t want to admit that their own kind in Africa, their own ancestors in Africa enslaved their own kind. This is why they don’t want to make any Assassin’s Creed games based in Africa. I know they already did Egypt, but I am talking other African countries or places in Africa other than Egypt like South Africa, Algeria, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, and the other 48 African countries.

My theory is Ubisoft wants to do a female only game for a long time but they also want the sales from the male player base and also hit the extra diversity quota. So they added Yasuke in. I personally would've loved it if it was only Yasuke. We would've felt like an outsider discovering Japan for the first time. Also Naoe is gonna be the only assassin so why is even Yasuke there just to be a brute with a katana.
Im not black or white or asian so all the politics aside I really hope Yasuke learns a few assassin tricks from Naoe and naoe learns to fuck shit up from Yasuke.

Actually, Japanese players, and even most East Asian players, don't really care about historical accuracy. After all, the protagonists in all the previous Assassin's Creed games have been fictional characters. The reason everyone feels offended is that Assassin's Creed has so many previous installments, and it has always upheld a tradition of using local protagonists in each game: Syrians, Italians, Americans, Brits, French, Egyptians, Greeks... But this tradition is broken when it comes to Japan. This makes Japanese players feel singled out. You might say there's also a playable female ninja who is Japanese, but the British siblings are both British, and the Greek siblings are both Greek, so this differentiation still exists.

The only thing that annoys me that both have to share the stage as the main character. The white male protagonists from earlier titles didn’t had to share their respective stages. But the asian woman or the black man had to share her or his place on the spotlight with another minority. I don’t know about you, but I feel like that kind of exaggerated inclusivity makes the withe males even more privileged than before. But from a marketing standpoint I totally get that approach, purely based on aesthetics of the promotional art this duo of main characters rocks and stays on my mind.

Yasuke’s background as a warrior doesn’t mean he was a samurai. There was no evidence of him receiving that title.
A samurai follows a strict code of conduct called Bushido, which basically means loyalty, honor, and self-discipline. Samurais underwent rigorous training in martial arts and weaponry from a young age. Yasuke came to japan in his mid 20s, only stayed for 3 years and served nobunaga for 15 months as his retainer. Nobunaga caught interest in yasuke simply because of him being black and his tall stature. He fought alongside him as a warrior, not a samurai.

We don't know much about Yasuke's life but from just his name we realize that most likely he wasn't a samurai, since if you reach that level of rank you would get a second name, but then again the term samurai wasn't used as much at that time, each type of high ranking warrior would have its own name, like daimyo for the lords that were samurai. But we aren't told that he fought in any battle besides the last one in which he and Nobunaga are defeated and he is sent back from Japan. From sources we know that he mostly was used as a sword bearer, which was important, like the next unifier after Oda Nobunaga strated as Oda's sandal bearer, and used to wresle and fight in duels maybe for political reasons but surely for entertainment ones. Overall great character and person in history and I not only like him, but expect him in this game, but as an NPC, like every other historical person and give the japanese people their japanese protagonist, they deserve it, I wouldn't want for any culture to be done this dirty.
And directly relating to your comment, yes this world was created so masterfully that when we open the game we live with the idea that this world has a fantastical sci fi aspect to it, but that is the fun seeing humanity through the eyes of protagonist forgotten by history and unravel the truths that were hidden from the normal people and explore places and moments from the perspective of the people present like it is normal, not a story filled with propaganda or changes because of time, raw and pure as it is.
