Meinl Cymbals - 22" Byzance Equilibrium Ride - Designed w/ Matt Garstka

- Introducing the 22” Byzance Equilibrium Ride; designed in collaboration with Meinl Cymbals artist Matt Garstka. This ride is a thicker cymbal overall. It’s thinned out at the edge to give it the desired crash-ability, while maintaining a nice stick attack and pleasing overtones for jazz-like patterns that are common in progressive music.

3 signature cymbal stacks, a signature china, and now a signature ride?! Matt is on a roll! Happy for you, man!
Also the hats but imo the hats are the weakest link. Bought a pair when they first released and just never was a fan of them. They don’t sound bad at all in the promo video and in his drum video Playthroughs but idk they just didn’t sound or feel good to me. If you check out actual real demos without processing and a bunch of production into the mix, like mycymbal demos from memphis drum shop or other drum stores with good quality raw demos, they dont sound good to me in any of those videos. But the equillibrium China is my favorite China ever, the fat stack is my favorite stack ever, and the temporal 1 stack is such a great quick cutting little stack with a lot of bite.
@@andyham6094 Oh ok. That's a shame because his other signatures and ACMs are really Expressive and cool!
@@andyham6094 huh weird you feel that way about the hats. I love mine! Different strokes I guess
@@andyham6094 Tried the Greb hats? Love them for almost everything.
@@StevenJamesBurks Those were my least favorite of Greb set, but I like more "brilliant" style hats (like plain AAX).
Now that he has almost collected every signature cymbal type to offer, all he needs is the 18 inch equilibrium crash. And maybe even an 18 inch disparity crash. Then he will have all 8 infinity cymbals.
He said the two crashes he uses are literally perfect and loves them and his left side crash which is a jazz extra thin 18 inch crash has always been his favorite and the 18 inch extra thin hammered crash has always been his favorite main workhorse crash. A signature cymbal is obviously a way for a company to capitalize on a well known respected influential marketable name like garstka and a way for that artist to make a nice percentage through their signature cymbals but I also think it should be for filling in a void that isn’t currently offered in that specific company’s current catalog. There would be no point and no motivation to try to come up with signature crashes and try to achieve the similar sound that they already offer and that he loves. They don’t want numerous cymbals sounding the same or similar and imo that’s the one gripe I have about Meinl…I love their sound but I feel they have enough dark trashy crashes to choose from. Basically all of the byzance lineups and different sub models are all dark and trashy which is what he would most definitly want. All the other signature cymbals he’s had so far are pretty unique. The fat stack is totally unique even when comparing to all the other companies, same with the equillibrium China being loud and aggressive yet medium dry and not too much sustain and ring with the holes and sand blasting and the traditional finish right at the most inner part near the bell area, the two little stacks are pretty cool and there are no other stacks like them that Meinl sells as they come although you could make your own stacks however which way you want, the hats I’m not a fan of after owning them when they came out and sold those right away but still a unique voice to them. But who knows we’ll see maybe we will get equillibrium crashes lol.
My is on the way in shipment. Tried it in store, and they are sending it. Never played a ride cymbal like this before🤠😊❤️
What an amazing cymbal. Could fit into so many musical styles and I love the timbre and control on the crash. Goes from “whoosh” back to “articulate clarity” in no time at all.
Looks like Meinl gets some more of my money
Amazing to see Matt Garstka making new incredible cymbals they also impress!!🤘🏼
Just ordered mine. I can't wait to hear it in person. Gonna pair great with my 16" vintage pure hats and esp the 20" extra dry crash
Incredibly great sounding! We had the perfect china, now we have the perfect ride. Thanks Meinl & Matt xx
Seems like you guys figured out the “crash” which the Sabian Omni didn’t quite get right. Awesome, would love to test one myself
I got money that by 2030 Matt will have a full set of signature cymbals
Probably all in development as we speak.
@@daedalus_20v more than likely. I can picture the equilibrium as a full on byzance line since I'm thinking a out it
Will definitely be my next upgrade for the kit. Sounds PERFECT.
This is really great, I hope it does well. Matt's really helping design cymbals for the current times and beyond. I remember stacking 20 years ago, now Matt and others have dialed in combinations that are wonerful. And the China and now this. Great job Matt and Meinl from a long-time Sabian player!!
Amazing, Matt! It really sounds like a jazz cymbal...
I have it and it is genuinely the best piece of drum equipment ive ever used, really changes the game when it comes to quality and sound.
Super dope sounding ride 👏🏾👏🏾
great sound and playing, awesome
I'm excited about this, team. Reminds me of what was achieved with Weckl's signature Sabian. Similar sonic balance but with a brighter bell tone, and made for metal fusion. Musion.
Musion.
Been waiting on you to finally reveal this. It sounds dreamy
Yes. Very good Ride.❤
love it ❤ wie wäre es mit einer 24“ davon 😍
Need to hear more of the cymbal demo!
I take it back, sounds amazing in this video
Might have to get one of these at some point, sounds awesome!
Meinl loves making integrated bells. I'd love to see more of their cymbals use a less gradual transition from the bell to the bow, like Zildjian bells. The only strong bells they have are the Classics Custom Dark 22" ride and the Pure Alloy 22". Maybe the Benny Sand Ride too
I totally agree. The polyphonic ride as well and imo that’s the best ride they’ve ever made and my favorite ride of all time. They also have the big bell metal rides like serpents ride and heavy hammered big bell metal ride but I’m pretty sure you’re talking about versatile rides that can do all 3 things, great defined bell, stick definition, and amazing crashability. Those are the rides I’ve always searched for with Meinl and only the polyphonic has fulfilled my needs but even that I wish the bell was louder. I don’t like rides that activate the entire cymbal when you play the bell like the jazz rides or transition ride although my transition ride is heavier and isn’t as bad and still a great ride. My 22 sand ride is def awesome but only thing about that is the tone of the bell is dark and doesn’t cut through the mix as well either and the crash also can get lost cause of the lower dark tone even tho it does crash well. I’m a Meinl guy but zildjian does a great job making versatile rides that have a great nice defined bell and great crashability and good enough stick definition like the A custom 20th anniversary ride, sweet rides, and the K Crash Ride. Two things that zildjian does better is make versatile crashable rides with a great bell and also make high quality b20 bright brilliant cymbals which imo is the only thing Meinl can improve and add to their catalog. Meinl’s polyphonic is better but Meinl needs more offerings like that and this would’ve been perfect to be a darker trashier type than the polyphonic ride. He describes the bell as “piercing” but I totally disagree. Philly drum shop just posted a demo of this ride that you can buy that exact cymbal and the bell is insanely washy and sounds exactly like the 22 inch dual crash ride and never bought that cause the bell was nonexistent and made the entire cymbal wash too much and had no definition or cut. I’ll be looking for a heavier weighted one of these and hopefully it will maintain the amazing crashability.
Amazing sound!
I love how us musicians spazz over random minute details 99 percent of listeners can’t hear. This is why I need seven more basses
Sounds beautiful. I want it
NIIIICCCEEE!!! Love it!
Meinl really loves you, Matt! Heck, we really love you, Matt!😁👏👌
it's finally here!
This guy's a pretty good drummer!
I started thinking Craig Reynolds might get pissed as he is working on a similar concept, but now hearing this ride I can say both their rides are nothing like each other and both sound equally amazing! I am however going to opt for Craig's signature ride (once it will be available). Cheers!
Totally hear ya! Both have some level of similarity in a conceptual point of view. I think Craig’s ride is awesome for a certain style of music/ride. I play a ride more for the bow and bell rather than the crash. I think Matt’s is a bit more versatile and if I was buying one I’d get Matt’s.
Nice bell sound 🔔 🔥
Probably the ride cymbal I need 😅
Woooooooooow sehr schön

Yesss!!!🎉
It is very majestic not over toned
This cymbal sounds ✨fucking incredible✨ y'all really struck gold with this one. 👌
Nothing beats a 3 zoner.
I started enjoying 3-zone rides listening to Jose from Incubus, he played a Sabian Raw Bell Dry Ride (usually an HH) and now I've got a vintage signature model from the drummer from Winger made the same way, thick bell, raw bow, lathed edge, and BOY HOWDY SHE SINGS! 😩
I think I’ve found my next ride.
Sounds like and looks like Sabians Omni cymbals and now the artisans series.
Nah sabian Omni has a weird sound to it and the crash and wash dies out way too quickly and the bell is super dry and pingy in a bad way. Also the stick definition is very dry too. Good for quieter music but gets lost in louder music. Usually a cymbal will have dynamics and the harder you hit it the louder it would get but the Omni seemed to have a ceiling and doesn’t get louder after the medium point. Good for quieter music once again but louder music you might want the last part of the song to have a powerful effect and lay into it more and give the music more power and fill in the music with the wash and crash but the Omni didn’t have the presence and power for that. Imo the bell, stick def, and crash all got lost in the music for prog/djent stuff. This Meinl ride is better in every way imo but will have to try it out.
It’s the same idea bro. Didnt care for your bible story of why Omni doesn’t sound like it. We haven’t even played these two cymbals side by side to really say. But it reminds me of omni and new artisan series.
I want it🤤
The Meinl Official Product Demos channel uploaded an Equilibrium ride video around 5:00 AM, that I was lucky enough to see, but it's gone now! They took it down. Anyone else get to see the other video while it was briefly up?
Noticed that too. Reaction on that clip had been lukewarm at best
Still rocking the tie dyes lol

The bow and bell are super quiet...
coooolll
Next: matt garstka artist concept crashes
I guess it's not a prototype anymore. Sounds great. I play Paiste, but I just bought his China because it's the best sounding one I've ever heard. May slowly switch to Meinl....
Wondering what type of “blank ride” they started with looks to be somewhere between a Dark series bell but extra dry series bow then the lathed edge.
I wondered the same thing.
Wish there was a 21 in version
Love this but is the difference between this and the dual series 22 ride in the lathe and maybe this is a bit more narrow? Anyone know?
What the Sabian Omni's been trying to sound like for the last 15 years.
*This seems like the perfect ride. For years I’ve been searching for a ride with jazzy papery stick attack, great crash/ride washy crashability, and a metal as fuck bell. The polyphonic ride is close, great crash, great bell, but lacks on the jazz stick definition. The ride that is my profile icon is a sabian prototype, which has great stick attack and amazing crash wash, but the bell isn’t 100% what I want. It’s close, but not quite there. It does however looking fucking rad, so I still use it daily. It may be a kind of placebo, where the cymbal looks so nice I trick myself in to thinking it sounds better than it does. But what I had wished Meinl would make was a kinda byzance dual ride, but with the raw bell from the dark line, and it seems thats exactly what Matt designed + a thinner edge to get that wash and jazz stick def. I feel kinda strange though, I have Matt’s hats and China, which are both superb, but it feels a little corny getting the ride. But, if it works if works, and I can’t wait to get ahold of one of these babies. I’ve always been trying to get a 19” polyphonic crash, that seems like a good one to add in the mix. Anyways, great job as always Meinl.*
coming to Australia?
So like an omni but more usable haha
Cotton balls in the rack toms ?
💰
Money!
seems kinda like an extra dry duo crash/ride. sounds sweet though. also comes across like the 22in sand crash/ride.
i fricken love Meinls anyway. but i'm still tired of them pushing the smack stacks. seems like it has eased up a bit though.
Yea but how much thousand bux?
Monophonic v2?
Did not know Aquaman played drums
To each their sounds. But was expecting way more stick definitions.
Still my favourite drummer tho.
So Matt didn't change his clothes since last time he was here?
That explains the #23 on the ride in his last video...
i think it's a 32 though
@@nickdenardo6479 Maybe, but you know what I'm talking about. Lol
@@jonathanbormann5077 yep. hey Meinl.... can you make me 32 ride cymbals so i can pick the one i like the most? 😆🤣
Why is the bell so dryyyy?
Cause he’s always preferred drier rides. The ride he used religiously before this is the pure vintage light ride which is one of if not Meinl’s darkest driest rides. He also used the extra dry medium ride and extra dry transition ride in the past before the vintage pure light ride. So that’s def his taste and sound. He’s never played washy crashy rides or super heavy pingy big bell metal rides. This ride is perfect for him. Still dry and dark but just more presence and cuts through better for animals but he can still use it for all his other softer side projects. The bell kinda sounds like the bell from the dark rides which aren’t too dry but not washy and has a decent ping attack to it.
The bell doesn't sound dry. It sounds a little washy without too much definition. Clear enough but seriously, I've heard 50+ much drier bells from all the big companies. Maybe you mean "quiet"? This ride as a whole is not actually that dry.
lol they hid the R&D logo with clever camera placement and cymbal rotation
Sounds like a sand ride and a Omni had a baby 😅
It's not difficult to get all those things in a Ride. Sabian did it with the Omni a decade ago. But I used to own a Meinl 21" Dark Ride that had one of the best bells I've ever heard
The dark ride is barely crashable though and feels like your hitting a brick wall when you try to lay into it for some crashability haha. And I even had one of the lighter ones in weight. But the bell is amazing and the stick definition is just as good but not a ride for you if you are looking for any crashability or wash. And I never liked the Omni. Something about it always sounded weird to me. The crashability is there but very dry and washes out too fast and in louder music it has no presence but for someone like jojo Mayer or softer music it’s prolly perfect.
The omni to me just has an odd sound to it. It was a great concept, but something about it just sounds off and weird. This? Sounds amazing imo
I Love my hhx Omni ❤
I thought my friends were kidding about the cotton balls and coated head on reso. Yikes 😬
Hmmm aquaman
I'm not big on washy rides so this isn't for me..but the drums sound fantastic
