  • I take you through the aisles of a large supermarket in Jyväskylä, Finland. In this store, you'll find basically everything you can imagine.

    It looks like you are in Prisma, the Finnish Walmart! It's a co-operative store chain. There's a similar chain called Citymarket, a "capitalist choice", as my dad calls it :) Yeah the Finnish stores often have a good selection of food items, Finns complain the high prices on food but the quality is pretty good too.

    City markets are best ones. Prisma is also ok.

    The beer in the supermarket in Finland is 5 times more expensive then in Germany, for the same brand, "Berliner". I've been last year. 🙂

    Not long ago I read about market analysts pointing out that the selections in Finnish supermarkets have got out of hand. The stores have tried to attract customers by offering more and more variety, within the product groups, that is, such as 100 different types of breakfast cereals/muesli, which ends up being expensive for the shops to maintain. It's already a lot of work to keep tracking the supply/demand and react to changes, but it's naturally also a lot of work to keep filling the shelves when you have got so many different products. Losses due to expired products will multiply. Technically you also need more room for the variety. It would also be cheaper for the stores themselves to buy a whole lot of 5 products than much less of 40 products, because of the wholesale reasons you mentioned.
    Hard to foresee where the trends will take us, though. Food is expensive, and the current situation will only make it more expensive. However, it's extremely difficult to change the current system, let alone try to enter the market with something different. I believe Lidl ran a deficit in Finland for many years, even though it basically revolutionised the grocery market over here and was warmly welcomed by many.

      The amount of a specific product doesn't really matter so much as both Kesko and S-group have their own wholesale operations. The inventory updates go automatically through the cash registrers so the sold products are replaced every night when the deliveries arrive.

    • @herrakaarme
      @herrakaarme Před rokem

      @@ImForwardlook There's a finite amount of shelf space. If you have a huge number of different products, there can only be so many units on the shelves. Staff also fills them in during the business hours. If you have less variery, you can have more of the same loaded on the shelves. Besides, there often are lacking products. Clearly there's no AI behind their automatic systems keeping track of supply and demand, or the suppliers can't keep producing and delivering so many choices. If there were less choices, it would be a lot simpler, and if the shop (group) can't reliably get a particular product, the group would replace it with another, from a more reliable supplier.

      @@herrakaarme Shelving space is naturally another issue. The stocking works like I said, I delivered products to stores for over 10 years. There is a 24 hour lag though, or perhaps even 48 hours depending on the product and location. Everything was delivered before 6AM so that the personnel could start stocking the shelves right away after coming to work. The stores have basically nothing in the back rooms, everything happens JIT.

    I prefer k-market stores mostly perhaps because they're franchises operated by the store owner rather than the chain and have at least a little bit more individuality (although not that much either). they used to refer to the size of the store with different number of K's, Citymarket was four K, service station minimarkets had one K and Supermarket was the one with three K's until it was realised this is considered bad on the other side of the planet and the whole system was changed.

      This is definitely from Seppälä. If you look at the rood, you'll notice the massive wooden beams. The first Prisma in Finland was made on the same lot this one is standing on right now but this one was built just behind it while that one was operational and now the footprint on that original is parking in front of this one.

    Prisma is nice and all, but as a bulgar-o-phile, I always look forward to my vacation so I can travel and get my annual dosage of lutenitsa, banitsa&boza, kebabche, yoghurt, meze meats and cheese, shopska salata, cherries, walnuts, lamb chops and of course, rakiya! Cant find those in Prisma 😔 and the spice sections in bulgarian supermarkets 🥲😍

    This looks very similar to my Prisma here in Eastern Helsinki. An excellent shop, where you can find everything that you need.
    However, you are from Belgium (or the Netherlands), aren't you? Shouldn't you have the same or, to be honest, an even better selection?
