Join us on our Helsinki adventure as we uncover the hidden gems and highlights of Finland's vibrant capital city. Known for its exceptional design scene, we delve into Helsinki's creative side with a couple of recommendations made by a local designer.
First up, we're irresistibly drawn to a renowned donut shop that not only boasts amazing donuts but also caters to vegans. Next, we make our way to the Design Museum, where we discover the fascinating world of Finnish industrial arts. From iconic designs to an exhibit on the globally popular Angry Birds game, this museum showcases thoughtfully crafted creations.
With the Design Museum leaving a lasting impression, we recommend a visit to their exceptional gift store. They offer unique finds, such as a cleverly designed foldable shopping bag that fits conveniently into a pocket. We also recommend exploring the adjacent Museum of Finnish Architecture, which takes us on a journey through the country's architectural evolution -- this museum offers a fascinating insight into Finland's architectural heritage.
We step off of the traditional tourist path and head to a local gin distillery. Finland's gin culture is thriving. We indulge in some of their crafted spirits and cocktails. For a memorable dining experience, we visit Boon Nam, a modern Thai restaurant highlighted in the Michelin guide. The tantalizing aromas alone will entice you as you enter. Boon Nam delighted our taste buds with dishes like Iberico secret of five-spice pork, crispy enoki mushroom salad, chili jam sweetheart cabbage, and coconut cheesecake.
Helsinki's compact and walkable ways allowed us to stroll its wide, inviting sidewalks, side by side. The city's vibrant and green ambiance exudes contagious happiness, leaving us eager to return and explore more of its wonders.
Don't miss this lively exploration of Helsinki's design, gastronomy, and cultural offerings. Join us on this journey and immerse yourself in the enchanting spirit of Finland's capital city.

❤ Great video again. I love the adult vibe, which is becoming rarer in CZcams. That being said, you could still watch these videos while kids are in the same room.
great video! i love that you are so respectful and genuine about experiencing finland and our culture :) i'm happy you had a good time!
Thank you. We were sad to leave.
You went in, you were prepared, it was well planned, dynamic and you did a bunch of interesting relevant things in a short time without rushing through it. And you even got your doughnuts.
MMMMM Doughnuts. :)
Fun vlog...You two crazy kids!
Such an adorable couple 👍Glad you enjoyed Finland. About the conflict of being the happiest nation and gloomiest at the same time; It's something we can laugh about ourselves thus becoming happier. 🤔😆
Next time you should visit Helsinki's Suomenlinna Sea Fortress. You can get there in 15 minutes by a HSL ferry from Kauppatori, close to the Senate Square. If I remember correctly, it is one of the largest sea fortresses in the whole world and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It represents the pinnacle of military architecture of that time. The Naval Academy is also located there. I hope you enjoyed your stay here in Finland 😊
That sounds like an awesome place to go.
I can second that recommendation (though only if the weather is good).
Wow! ❣️ Wonderful video! Thank you for sharing 👌😎👍
I lived in Helsinki for two years and loved it! One of the most beautiful cities in the world.
BS. My most hated city in the world...
I agree and have lived/visited all around the world.
@@smokeonthewater5287You seem fun. Explain
Glad you guys enjoyed your visit to our humble country :). Thank you for being such a fun sport about it and CZcams for recommending this channel. I had to watch it all in one go as a curious Finnish person :'D
We were very impressed with Finland. We're from Minnesota so we found it to have man similarities, so it gave us a feeling of home. We hope to make it back some day.
You should visit the rest of Finland, too, Helsinki is not a typical Finnish City. It is like London and New York, there are living a lot of people from all around the world. If you went outside of Helsinki you´d be more surprised by the beauty of Finnish nature and people. IMHO. 😎
We'd love to... hopefully some day, we can come back.
It's not like London or New York, only the prices match them. Helsinki is a total leftist green fortress who hate cars and do their best to reduce the quality of life for the rest of the country.
Why do finns underestimate Helsinki. Time magazine ranked Helsinki one of the world's greatest places 2021.
@@butterflies655 Perhaps because Helsinki represents everything most finns hate. It's nervous, cramped, expensive and hostile towards cars. Most places are locked due to narcotic originating crime and graffiti and other vandalizations everywhere. There are just so much better places to live in Finland. Peace, clean nature and relaxed living.
Great video! You should have definitely tried Finnish salmon soup and Karelian pie.
Next time!
Finland YEYIIII!!!
Just found you. THANK YOU for saying SAUNA and Helsinki correctly!!! Remember to always put the accent on the first syllable. Like SAUna HELsinki. Can you tell I'm Finnish? Born in Michigan. I'm going to share your blogs with my family. ❤
In 1943, when that was still a prison, my father brought two POW russian soldiers there, but not directly, first he took them to a sauna, they did not even try to escape (they had it better there than at the front, and much safer).
I bet being in a prison in Finland is better than living in the US.
The ladder in the bathroom is for drying your towels and other.
On the subject of architecture: The Gateway Arch in St. Louis MO was designed by the Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen.
Great video! Prison hotel was cool!
You guys always find the most interesting food and drink places that seem to have the very nice menus. I felt so gipped for Chris about the morning doughnuts, but what you were finally able to enjoy looked so good. Fantastic museum about design and the functional souvenir bag is really cool.
8:46 Unless it's like a fine dining restaurant I would never have a reservation while traveling. Don't like the time pressure and also I wanna get the feeling for the place before going in.
Cant wait you to visit at winter.
Tampere is even better if you ever deside to come back! :)
Around the area you stayed - Katajanokka - you can find great Jugend architecture. Hopefully you had enough time to see some of that.
We got to see a few things... quickly. Hopefully next time, we'll have more time.
Love your videos from finland
Thank you!

I think Melissa looks like a finn 😊
Donut theater was worth a "like" right there.
We've cut back on our donut coverage, thus, less donut theater. 🤣 But I do see another donut place in a future video. Perhaps Melissa will grace us with more of it. I'll make sure to encourage her to do some.
The white church is a let-down from the inside so you didn't miss much.
The scooter can be ridden like a skateboard feet pointing sideways, or feet side by side pointing forward. I use both techniques. But they're not for everyone. Glad that you enjoyed your trip!
Lovely video of my home town!
ps. I'm working on a street photography book on Helsinki, and I'm looking for little written pieces to accompany the photos - this is a long shot but would you like to write something for the book? Length of the text is up to you, I'm just looking for all kinds of perspectives and outlooks on Helsinki. Topic is also up to you, I just want something that the writer sees as a very Helsinki thing/place/moment/character/anecdote.
If you want to, that's awesome but if you don't, no hard feelings. Either way I'm really happy you enjoyed your stay here!
Hi. This sounds like an interesting project and one we might be interested in contributing to. Could you share some more details through the email on our About Page?
@@chrisplusmelissa Why of course I can, will do so tonight.
Fiskars is also a really nice place to visit
The "prison hotel" is my personal favourite, a cool place! Perhaps a surprising fact about the Finnish prison system: around 1/3 of Finnish prisons are so called open prisons, where prisoners are locked up only at night, during the day they can work and study outside the facility, basically like everybody else. The NBC Newa on Finnish open prisons: czcams.com/video/35QL080lkAw/video.html
Very interesting. In the states, I think we have something similar. But I also think we have something very very different (profit-making prisons specifically, which are a really really bad idea imho).
The thing to know about VR systems is that VR setup is either room scale where you actually walk around or kind of teleport navigation where you point towards next teleport position and press some button to teleport directly to the new position then look around there. If you haven't been instructed how the system works, you have to just try and figure out how the system is supposed to work. One quick test is to crouch and check if the viewport changes in vertical position. If the vertical camera position in 3D scene follows your head, it's probably room scale tracking but you may be limited by the wire length.
Now read that again and replace VR with the old school VR a.k.a. our Train company.

Chris. When you next time visit Helsinki. Do let me know. I'll give you a Migraine Rapid® treatment, no charge.
Nice video. You had done your "homework" very well again. Isn't it kinda funny that I haven't visited those design and architecture museums even I've lived in Helsinki metropolitan area for about 30 years? :D
I just came back to Finland from a vacation trip. We drove around the Baltic states for two weeks.
Hi guys, thank you for the lovely video of your day in Helsinki. I loved it❤
Our pleasure! Thank you for watching. :)
In case you missed seeing the adventure we arrived from in this video, here are the videos to catch ya up: czcams.com/video/wrJtCuW_Jsk/video.html and czcams.com/video/wrJtCuW_Jsk/video.html -- Cheers!
Hello from Finland 👋 🇫🇮
Hello! You've got a lovely country.
Too bad you didn't get to taste the ROUND donuts, they're the best I've had in Finland. They have others locations too.
But we did get to...they just removed the name off their window for some odd reason. 😜
Don't assume Scandinavian prisons are the same as US prisons. At least nowadays there is a big difference. When I visited Finland decades ago, we sidestepped Helsinki having arrived in Turku via ferry from Sweden. I am tempted to go to visit.
Lol the prisons here are like band camps. Sauna evenings, free movement until curfew, quality food and gym equipment... It's a sad joke that promotes crime instead of being a deterrent.
A room in a former jail🤔🤔. Did you get the pink handcuffs include in the room, or they are extra? 🤭😂
🤣
Helsinki is such a small town. 😂
The migraine is Aspartame related. Watch what is in your food/ drinks
I don't think I consume much of that... but I'll on the look out. Now if I could just read the small print on the food labels! 🤣
Never have had aspartame in my diet, but working nine to five in an office on a pc I had regular migraines.
Changed my lifestyle and haven’t had one in a decade.
But my secret is getting my neck massaged, not the back of my neck but the front.
What? No Suomenlinna?
Maybe next time.
Umm... Plants don't metabolize carbon monoxide. They metabolize carbon dioxide...
Interestingly enough Carrie Poppy did a Ted talk on the whole carbon monoxide hauntings. It's a good watch
Darn it... I was close! 😄
@@chrisplusmelissa I should also clarify that some plans can oxidized carbon monoxide to create carbon dioxide than metabolize it, but not all.
@@TonyRueb Well, those were the plants I'd ordered!!
Thank u for caring
When Finnish musician Remu Aaltonen served his prison term in Katajanokka prison he filmed music video there: czcams.com/video/Onk-sal_5vE/video.html
Thank you for the introduction to Remu... why did he go to prison? (I will confess, 1987 videos were weird. :D)
@@chrisplusmelissaI think that was for the drug smuggling .
ok
hi kid.
Helsinki is the crappiest city in Finland, especially if you get in with a car. Avoid at all cost.
Compared to a lot of other cities in the world that we've been to, it's pretty nice.
@@chrisplusmelissa For a tourist maybe, you don't have to drive a car there. The entire city is a mess every summer with constructions blocking the roads. Parking is insanely expensive and many roads have been turned into pedestrian streets, making moving in the city painfully cumbersome.
