- On "My Car Story" we're in the Western Suburbs of Chicago IL on 7-5-24.
We're looking at a 1968 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500KR Coupe in Candy Apple Red Paint.
The car comes with the 428 CI Cobra Jet V8 engine and a 4 Speed manual transmission.
The car's Owner is Dave Snelling. Dave’s had this car since 2022. Dave shares he wanted one in blue as a teenager but couldn’t find the money. As life goes on, he saved and finally found the right Shelby GT500KR for him. Congratulations Dave for staying focused and achieving your “dream car”. Well done.

That's truly American. Fondly remembering those days. Thanks, it made the day
Happy to read "it made the day" :-) You're welcome.
Awesome Lou & DaveI went for a ride in a blue 68 GT500KR convertible in 1974. I was 14 at the time. My neighbors brother flew down from Pennsylvania to buy the car & drive it back up to Pa. We took it up on the highway & he floored it to show me how fast it was. It immediately broke the Fan belt. We had to walk to a Filling station & get towed. I never got to ride in it again. 5 years later my 77 JEEP CJ7 Renegade clutch shattered in that same spot on the highway✌️😎☯️
HI Angus, Two fun memories and stories.....in the same spot! Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Wowww!!! Memories of a lifetime!!!
That intro was so good, I had to play it a couple times! Drive it like it was meant to be driven. If you're afraid of it, don't own it!

It's simply amazing! It has been awhile since I've seen a KR, and Mr. Snelling's is as good as it gets. What a great car and a great car story of setting and achieving personal goals. Thanks, Lou!

What a beast. Love it Lou!
Hi gwhizz44, Happy to share this "Beast" with you :-) Lou
Really beautiful this 1968 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR with that Candy Apple Red! I love its classic lines, like the bulky fiberglass hood with those pair of air ducts, along with the large front grille and its two headlights; in addition to the beautiful curved shape of the trunk door, also in fiberglass, and the chrome fuel cap with the Cobra logo in the middle of its two long strips of lights (special mention for those attractive aluminum rings and its four exhaust pipes). A very nice interior in black, with attractive chrome and wood details, both on the instrument panel and on the doors or the steering wheel; Oh, and of course, Carroll Shelby's surprise signature on the glove compartment! The final exciting ride (apart from the monstrous acceleration at the beginning of the video, haha) with those beautiful landscapes and the sound of the V8 Cobra Jet roaring in the background! Congratulations to Mr. Snelling, for making his dream come true! Best regards, Lou!
Hi Jaime, Happy to read "I love its classic lines" :-) Glad to read you enjoy the ride too. Thank you for sharing the details you see, Lou
A real beauty Lou!
Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car Jeffrey!
Lou, you just keep raising the bar. I don't know how you are going to top this one. Great video, with the best intro take off ever in my favorite car ever.
Stacy, High praise. Glad to read "Great video, with the best intro take off ever in my favorite car ever." :-) NICE! Lou
Great car! Just started a restoration on a 70 Torino that was originally a showroom car with every single available option. 351-4v, shaker, A/C, power windows, etc
Hi MissouriAviator, Happy to read you enjoy this "Great car!" :-) Hope your restoration comes out the way you like. When it's done, share some pictures as it sounds like a great car to share on the Channel, Lou
The 428 was more street friendly/docile than the ford 427. It really is great design .
Hi Big Hank, Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Lou
They all had cast crankshafts. The 427’s were all forged. So you are correct. More of a Thunderbird engine than a race engine.
@@drippinglassThe 428cj & 428scj is a lot more involved than a standard T-Bird 428.
You make it sound as though you can pop the hood on the
T-Bird, remove the Ford Autolite
carb install a Holley carb and voilà you have a 428cj. 🙄
@@cobracharmer6178 It’s a downgrade from the 427. I can’t imagine any Ford guy disagreeing.
The rear end is beautiful. The only ass end nicer in 1967 was Ann Margaret's. Thanks Lou.
Win / Win :-) You're welcome Mike.
Now that’s a car. Like the owner, that was one of my dream cars. Have loved it for decades. And great color, looks a little understated (if possible) without the over the top stripes. Further, that is a super nice original looking car. Finally, a 4 on the floor like it should be.
Hi Scott, Happy to read you enjoy this "dream car" too. Lou
Oh, my! The glorious notes of an American V-8 engine all combined in the styling of a vivid, bright, powerful, bold red M U S T A N G! Sundays are close to heavenly and bringing to us a Mustang of this vigor just makes me want to dance, dance, dance!
Lou! If it were possible to score a touchdown, a two point conversion, to hit a grand slam home run, and to make a half court 3 point basket on the same play, you've just done it!
I love Mustangs and this one is superb! You are the best, Lou! Your efforts are most appreciated!
Hi ultraviolet tp, High praise. Clearly a WINNER for you :-) Thank you for your kind words, Lou
In the mid 70's, a used car lot had one for sale. He said a dentist owned it. It was lime green & black interior. 428 dual 4's & C6 trans. They wanted $2500 for it! Also it looked in perfect condition!
Hi Robert, Happy to read this car brings back memories of the car you remember in the used car lot the Dentist owned :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Hi Michael, Happy to read "Awesome car!!!!!" :-) You're welcome, Lou
The only thing missing from the video is right at the end he should have thrown that thing into 3rd and stomped on it.... What a rush it must be. At 60 years old now I doubt i will ever have one but as a kid I dreamed about those cars, I ended up leaning towards the Mercury cars from that era and owned many nice ones but none as special as that KR. Oh to be young once more. Great video, thanks.
Hi Randall, Happy to read that "as a kid I dreamed about those cars" :-) Glad to read you have had some fun Mercury's. Thank you for the kind words on the video. You're welcome, Lou

Hi JubileeValence, SUPER THANK YOU FOR THE SUPER THANKS! I appreciate the support, Lou
Let’s see the GT/CS in the background!!
.....stay tuned :-)
@@loucostabile Fantastic!! If you want any information on the GT/CS and HCS cars please contact me.
Owned a 2009 KR. Great car but it should have been so much more. Shelby was only interested in $ . Same power as standard 500 with 475 rwh. Should have top of the line muscle instead of 34000$ of badging some suspension tuning, and a different exhaust system. Sorry I forgot the stripes. Please don't rest in peace.
Hi John, Thanks for viewing and sharing, Lou
nice
:-)
Lou was this car faster than the Hemi cars you have been in??
Daniel, Depends. I'm in Carlisle PA @ the Chrysler Nationals so your question is right on time. In several Hemi Cars today, however two Hemi cars today had issues. One wouldn't start, and the other had a transmission issue (stay tuned to see this in future episodes). Hemi cars have dual quad carburetors, so if they are both dialed in and working well together, the Hemi is tough to beat. This Ford is dialed in, very fast, and enjoyable. Hope that helps, Lou
i like gt 500.
Me too :-)
Coffee but no donut! Grab a healthy munch buddy!
One of these days...we'll tell you about "the race" hahaha!
Clue: 500KR....390 Wagon....unlimited run...🤣🤣🤣🤣
True story! Wagon OWNED the first 2 shifts!!
But alas......😂😂😂😂
Cheers!
Hi JubileeValence, Sounds like a FUN story :-) Lou
I rode in one back in the day and really didn't find them fast. Guess I should have never rode a Ninja.
Hi Leslie, yes....a motorcycle is fast :-)
Lou, you should’ve put the camera on the fuel gauge when he lit it up. You would’ve literally seen the needle quiver!
My story on this car goes back to 1969. My dad had a friend who was a pharmacist and bought a green ‘68 GT500 KR from Krieger Ford in Lodi, CA in 1969, as it had sat on the showroom floor due to the price. In 3 months and 3,000 miles of ownership, Felix got 3 speeding tickets. My dad, who was looking for a new car for my mom, was offered the car for $3,000. We took the car for a test drive and the fuel gauge is what I remember from that spin. My mom flat out nixed the deal, due to the 4 speed.
This was August, 1969. The 1970 models were coming out and my dad conceded to my mom…and we went down to Chase Chevrolet to order a Chevelle SS LS6 with a a Turbo 400.
We came home with a leftover, yellow 1969 Impala with a 327…for $300 more than the Shelby. 😢
Hi Sean, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your the Pharmacists car & the 1969 Impala :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
dont know why title says "coupe" ??
Would because there is a convertible version too. czcams.com/video/jzznSbEXXC8/video.html
Why did Dave try and sell the car last year at the Auburn, IN, auction, if it's his dream come true?
Hmmm, not sure.
I have the EXACT car just a automatic.
How awesome is that! Happy to read you have a FUN car too.
I have many it's just that's the car I've always wanted, and I'm in my mid 50s and the wife kinda made me get it....
Hahaahah
So after buying the car of his dreams, why does he want to sell it just one year later?
Hmmm, not aware of that. How are you aware of that?
I don.t like the rear side😢
Better the previous makes original
Hi Mr CS, Thanks for viewing and sharing, Lou
