I had a 1969 Boss 429 back in the 1980's. I also had an 'R' code 1969 428 Mustang at the same time. The 428 was much faster in drag races. The 428 also had far more exciting street driving characteristics. The 429 engine was designed for very high RPM over track performance and not drag racing.
I bought a1968 Mustang Shelby 428 c.i. Super Cobra Jet Lemans 6 pack Holley profile with headers, 21 inches Mickey Thompson slicks with 52,000 mi , all black, no chrome, 4 speed Hurst, in May 1973 in Sherbrooke, Québec , I was almost 19 y.o. I paid $1,250 cdn.
That’s a big difference my friend, look at the coil vents in front of the windshield, take 5 L water and watch the water doesn’t come into the food area the rest is just underneath to see if the floors are not rusty and the trunk area. I hope this helps a little 👍🏼

you need a new valvetrain not only are your lifters ticking but that engine could use a cam with good characteristics to better performance and give the engine a lopey idle
