    I actually purchased this car in the SEL trim (non-premium) in the Silk Blue in May and have been pleasantly surprised by it. I'm not using the car as a racer but as a commuter car to pick up groceries and daily driving. I really have come to appreciate the adaptive cruise control feature as it makes long highway driving much more comfortable and its pretty spacious for a compact car, plus the looks will age well in comparison to some others and fuel economy is pretty good. So far I'm pretty happy with it and hoping to continue so for the next 5-10 years.

      For a commuter car this is about as good as it gets. Top value for the driving convenience features it comes with.
      Also as someone who has to commute 100kms regularly (once or twice a week) I totally agree with you on the adaptive cruise control - it's such a blessing

    Just leased a new 2019 Jetta it's a great commuter, very fuel efficient, the rides comfy. By no means is it a "sports car" nor does it tries to be. The new 6yr/72,000 mile warranty is a nice upgrade compared to other companies. Once my lease is over I'll upgrade to an Audi or something similar, but for now this is more than what I need.

      unreliable. I bought it two months ago. Already the panel broke off and had to have it repaired. The brakes make this awful sound which the dealership said is normal. Maybe for a 10 year old car it is. I'll post a video of the sound later.

  • @garywatson
    @garywatson Před 6 lety +14

    I bought the 2019 Jetta SEL Premium a couple months ago after some nimrod totalled my BMW 550i and the insurance payout wouldn't put me in a new 550i. Obviously it's less overpowered than my 550i, but other than that I think it's a great car and I'm glad I coughed up the extra cash for the SEL Premium package. The glass cockpit and CarPlay stuff was worth it to me. It drives just fine in LA traffic and last week I drove it 300mi to Vegas and got 40.1 MPG using the adaptive cruise control - it was plenty powerful enough for going, say, 85 MPH up the steepest hills on I-15 with the A/C running. One oddity - the fancy computerized motorized controls are only on the driver's seat - my wife gets old-fashioned bars and cranks on her side. And as far as the vents being too low is concerned, they do that so the huge LCD panels can be as high as possible, and to me that's a good tradeoff. You can change the color of the "courtesy" lights to whatever you want but since I'm not 17 years old I don't give a shit about that.

    Hi Micah, great review and so great to see you. I drive a 2014 VW Jetta, and the 7th generation does absolutely nothing for me. I feel that VW plays it too safe with its cars and makes me wonder about the next gen Passat. I find the 7th gen Jetta underwhelming. I owned the 2011 Jetta i loved the car and the only reason i traded that one was to get a minivan. I wanted for years to get another one but i didn't want to go back to the same outdated body style. It wasn't until the 2019 Jetta came to our dealership that i started to be interested again. At first the front grill didn't catch my attention, it wasn't until a month or two later that i went back and for some reason i liked it better. I test drove the 2019 Jetta Se with the Cold weather Package, and we immediately fell for it. I love simplicity and the interior is that. I love having three knobs and simple buttons for my climate control. I love the black and white display as well as the white illumination throughout the interior. The android auto works great and i'm very excited to see what updates they will bring to it. The 1.4 turbo engine is more than enough for me. Now if you like the Japanese style cars with the stretched headlights/taillights, CVT transmission and interior with all the sensitive touch buttons and colorful display this car is not for you. I just gotta say I'm glad i didn't buy a Toyota or Nissan I am pretty happy with my 19 Jetta and their Bumper to Bumper 72,000 miles or 6 Years warranty.

    Ah yes, the standard complaints. "Why don't they offer a stick in upper level trims? Answer: They don't want to see cars sitting for months in dealer lots that end up being heavily discounted to sell.
    "Why don't they include (fill in the blank) feature, especially in the least expensive package?" Answer: Manufacturers have the irrational objective of making a profit and, especially in this market segment, price is an overriding priority and upselling to higher level trims for those with the budget to support it adds profit, as well. How unfair!
    "Why did they drop the larger engine and substitute a smaller power plant?" Answer: Another critical priority in this market segment is fuel efficiency. And achieving that magic "40 mpg" for highway mileage on the window sticker is a prime objective. That's especially true if similar real world performance can be achieved by mating that smaller engine with an eight speed automatic and still get "40 mpg" on the highway (or at least on the window sticker).
    "Why did they 'cheap out' with a torsion bar suspension?" Answer: See answers above, especially if it doesn't affect overall comfort in normal driving for the vast majority of consumers.
    "What about reliability?" Answer: Here's the longest bumper-to-bumper warranty in the industry. And it's transferable to boot.
    "Why isn't this a sedan version of a GTI?" Answer: Consumers who want GTI performance buy GTI's (and love them.) Next question?

    If you are thinking to buy a new VW JETTA 2019, think twice.
    I bought this car in May 2019. The 8 speed automatic transmission, beside making a grinding noise when is driving at a constant speed of 30 to 40 miles per hour (+/_ 1,200 RPM), make an annoying vibration. The service department and the VW representative said that the vibration and noise are normal. I think this is the most ridiculos answer that I ever heard from a car manufacturer.
    I when to different VW dealers and drove a brand new car and all have the same problem. Be careful when you test it, maybe you will not notice it at the beginning.
    Just type in Google "Jetta 2019 transmission problems" and you will see.
    Pd: This happens on roads not very steep as we have in florida.

    Somethings wrong, really. Even a Jetta mk4 with a used 250k miles suspension doesn't do this.
    That movement happens when you do have bad shock absorbers. Or stupid engineers. Or both.

      Even my Touareg with off-road suspension isn’t that floaty. Looks like they stole the suspension from a Lincoln Town Car

      @sandyshoremann7524 Před 5 lety

      Yes way too soft compression and rebound - even and 80's Renault wouldn't go this far soft. I own one. The floaty ride soon becomes a Dangerous float when travelling over 80MPH on the Interstate. Ive bottomed the suspension on the highway from excessive body motion! It's like a shrunken Mercury Grand Marquis without exaggeration. Or a '93 Buick Roadmaster. I sort of like it for comfort - and then I don't for handling confidence and precision. Wonder if TSB for this. It would be and expensive one.

    I bought one of these a month ago, and have 2000 miles on it. There is a lot to like, but I'm not feeling the love. I came from a 2013 Focus with 100k miles on it that I had loved, but the DCT became too much out of warranty. This thing has some issues though. I don't know how VW managed to fuck up the suspension, but while it's soft on smooth roads, if you hit any hard impacts/potholes/expansion joints, it's VERY unpleasantly rough, especially the rear suspension feels like my grandfathers 2000 Silverado. The engine is nice with loads of torque down low, but lacks upper end grunt. The transmission is... Well it has quirks, mostly a weird slip into 3rd/4th, and a clunk when going into reverse. I'm considering taking it into the dealer to look at that. The steering wheel requires too much turning compared to the Focus to accomplish the same thing. It's also just HUGE, and the visibility is pretty poor, and lacks blind spot mirrors. (I'd take the blind spot mirrors of my Focus anyday over blind spot monitoring). The fuel economy has been great so far, 40+ on the highway at 75mph+ is easy. It's not a bad car, but it could have been so much more. I'm really regretting not getting another Focus- and I was one of the people that went through 4 clutch packs on mine. Or at least getting a Golf. It's an ok car, but I miss my Focus. Sorry VW.

      Subie Guy1 Subie Guy1 VW, at least when it comes to cars OTHER than the GTI and Golf R, is underwhelming. Underwhelming reliability, outdated and bland styling, and mixed fuel economy (depending on which vehicle you’re looking at- this Jetta is no joke when it comes to mpg.)
      I’m not talking about the more premium VW brands, they’re great and mostly class competitive, if not class leading when compared to their competitors. But when it comes to economical vehicle choices, there’s always plenty of options better than VW. Not to mention what TomCook1993 said.

      Derivative and Horrendous. The guy who designed the Ford Fusion? Uh, I mean the guy who designed the Hyundai Sonata? Same but worse. Tesla Model 3 tail lights?! Bad steal there. Not smart VW. Can't afford Giorgetto Giugario? I own a 2019 S with a stick. So, daily I try not to regurgitate as I approach the vehicle, but once I'm situated in the cockpit all is well - aesthetically at least. I hope the TS and WW stalks don't snap off in my hands until my lease runs out. VW beef up tactile controls - you mustnot bean count HERE. If not for The 6M stick + turbo and the Wondrous 3 litre thrust from 2000-4000 rpm. I would not shop here at all. Work to be done for 2022!
