    I just bought a new 2017 Jetta Highline two months ago, the dealer was moving it's last few 2017s and gave me a great deal with a trade-in Jeep Wrangler. I went to the dealer with the intention of getting the absolute least expensive Jetta on their lot, as my budget was very limited, and left the dealership with a Highline, with a moonroof, 1.8L Turbo, and leatherette seats along with other upgrades, within my budget. I continue to be amazed at how much car I got for my money. The great feeling of driving a brand new car away from the dealer's lot for the very first time, is the feeling I get every single time I drive it, it doesn't wear off. So I'm often getting the question "Why not wait for the new 2019 model?", I just don't need it. I'm 54 years old, and I don't need any bling or flash to draw attention from others. I needed reliability in a vehicle, and reliability in it's technology, and I'm convinced Volkswagen can deliver. The Jetta isn't perfect; my single complaint so far is the lack of an override button for the traction control (SERIOUSLY???!!! Even my 2012 Freightliner has it!), but I didn't buy a 2018 Rolls-Royce Phanthom, I bought a Jetta. I loooove the simplicity of my car, it blends, it doesn't stand out, and a few of us still like that. Over the years, I've owned a Jeep Cherokee, a Mustang, a Dodge Charger, and even a Lincoln (back in the ol' days when cars were affordable), and I can't figure out why Volkswagen wasn't on my radar sooner.

    My 2017 Jetta S 1.4L turbo 5M - at 53,000 miles has had zero problems......while averaging 41 MPG. . Easy to drive with a light clutch, short thrown shifter and fully independent rear suspension. Plus I got it on sale (The emissions issue was a big factor here.)

    I drove one back to back with a Golf. It's a very nice car. The Golf, to me, feels even more refined and handles better I'm sure because of it's rear independent suspension, plus has more power with the bigger engine. The 8 speed is really good for the 1.4, but the 6 speed with the 1.8 works very well. The Jetta gives you more interior features for the money, in that an SE Jetta is several thousand less than an SE Golf, and they share most of the same equipment. The purist in me wants the Golf (especially the Sportwagen), but the Jetta is an incredible value proposition.

    Puebla, Mexico is VW's second largest car plant in the WORLD after Wolfsburg, so don't be concerned about quality. They use the SAME German robotic technology to assemble cars, and qualified employees (just like Wolfsburg), so their cars are OK. My 16 year old VR6 GTI was built in Brazil, and it has been the most reliable car my family has ever owned!

    Not a word about the killer trunk lid. Gone is the lid that pops up and stays up now you have one that is guaranteed to drop on you head or neck until you finally get it that you have to jamb the damn thing up as far as it will go. Also no more loading that trunk when you hands are full, pop the trunk with the key fob and it will release the catch but the lid stays stubbornly down so you have to put something down and open it right up (remember it WILL drop on you unless you do). Well done VW, a great car and they cheap out on such a detail.

    Have to give Volkswagen props where props are due. Number 1. they offer the manual transmission across all trim levels. This is a huge deal!!!!!!. 2. they have standard LED headlight and taillight which i dont understand how that is not standard across all cars seeing how cheap LED's are. 3. I believe they are coming back out with the TDI not sure on this one but i was told the 2019 would have a tdi. which i love. Overall pretty impressed with their decisions. Also that new Burnt Orange color is sexy

    • @bmw803
      @bmw803 Před 6 lety

      My Cruze TDI gets me 52 MPG on the highway ( avg 80 mph ). So, it's still 12 MPG more than the gas version of this Jetta. They used the Opel engine in the 2017 + Cruze. Runs very nice. Wish that GM would have put better suspension, so the car can feel like a VW when grabbing curves. Other than that, they did a good job on it.

      Oh yeah and it isn’t made by Chevy

    • @bmw803
      @bmw803 Před 6 lety +1

      Agreed. I had a MK4. Best VW I ever had. Very solid car and excellent Diesel engine. It was able to do 55, because they didn't have the ULSD yet. Diesel fuel has also changed a lot over the years. However, my Cruze TDI is not really made by Chevrolet. The Engine is from Hungary and made by Opel. Yes, GM owns their shares, but non the less it's a european engine that has been around for a while, before it was brought over here. At least it's a smart move by GM. Get those TDI customers. The Cruze TDI runs pretty well to be honest with you. I expected less. The only thing, I wish the suspension was more like VW, but other than that, a very nice car.

    The claim that the beam axle rear end allowed for a larger trunk is total BS, because the Mk7 Jetta's trunk is *SMALLER* than the MK6's, even though the Mk6 (in its later years) had independent rear suspension -- and also a larger fuel tank than the Mk7!

    • @brandononbrand
      @brandononbrand Před 6 lety

      And the Mk5 had an even bigger trunk with IRS... VW used the trunk size as an excuse for the torsion beam with the Mk6 too... but, as you indicate, if that were true, how did they then fit IRS later on in the Mk6? Trunk didn’t get any smaller AFAIK when they went back to IRS.

      Independent rear suspension doesn't buy you much on a FWD car other than anti- skid toe control. It doesn't help ride quality. Plus add a stabilizer bar and its NOT independent any more. Another big benefit with a twist beam is you won't have to align the rear suspension anymore and the shop always seems to get it wrong when they try anyhow. Just mi dos centavos.

I am accustom to driving Honda and Toyota and i don't know if I could accept a higher failure rate that the VW is sure to bring. Drove my toyota for 12 years and never replaced my muffler or alternator. My mom owned a Jetta and was replacing her muffler every 3 years even though she was using OEM part. Jettas are excellent in the snow though and their seats are SUPER COMFORTABLE.

    As a south florida resident this car is a no go) they placement of the AC vents is absurd and the AC is underpowered sure if you live in the mid west it's a non issue but when temps outside are 95+ on a daily basis you need a car that can cool you off unfortunately the AC even in the 2018's which had better vent placement still had an underpowered AC and if they took away the CD player as I love and use it alot then add HD which they never put for the 2019 my Subaru outback that is from 2015 has HD and VW 2019's don't have HD? It's 2019 there are several good stations for HD radio

    • @99charged
      @99charged Před 6 lety

      Florida like weather here in D.C. epic fail bro we live near Miami you don't know what heat is all year round it's summer I have ruined about 5 navigational devices by leaving them up in my car sunctioned to the windshield and they all baked from the heat my upholstery dash gets ruined from the south florida sun my brother in law lives in Virginia very close to Washington D.C. huge difference not even close with the heat clearly you haven't owned the 18 Jetta to understand that the 19 is a step back with the AC vents I own the 2014 Jetta sportswagon since it's slightly bigger then the Jetta they installed a more powerful AC so my AC blows the Jetta out of the water in cooling down the car last week it reached 98 degrees imagine a AC turned on full blast after 30 minutes not cooling off the 19 Jetta and you don't have the issue in Washington DC even when it gets hot it's not Miami

    • @lego4virgo
      @lego4virgo Před 6 lety

      Hot is hot...maybe not Miami-hot, but we've got the humidity to add to it--and it's been bad all this week. I'll stick by my statement: The '19 Jetta cools down very nicely for not having rear vents, and that's with me sitting in the back, and with the blower settings not set for head/feet, just head. You're judging from your issues with an '18 but have you even TRIED a '19 and seen how the AC works? You just made an assumption about things without having tested it. I've only been in a MK V from a while ago--as a rental--and I think it did okay with AC. As for your Jetta Sportwagen, of course the AC is possibly (I say possibly--neither of us have done a scientific test, and the only people that could do it are my wife's friend or my brother-in-law; they both own Sportwagens) stronger than in a sedan since you have more space to cool.

    They mentioned torque is more important than horsepower in the review, could someone please explain to me why? I'm tryna learn as much as possible, and this is something that has been confusing me. I've read up a bit on it, but I'm hoping someone with more knowledge here can briefly explain that to me in a simplified form. Thanks!

    • @pedrothevenard
      @pedrothevenard Před 6 lety +1

      basically hp is the result of torque (in pound feet ) times rpm divided by 5252, so a car that has a lot of hp but low torque needs to rev the rpm like crazy to achieve speed fast, while a car with low hp and high torque will pick up speed really well in lower rpm like going from 40 to 60 mph when cruising, but the end speed might not be that high, that makes torque very important for every day driving like when you try to pass someone, the acceleration is defined by where your peak hp is in the rpm range, and torque will modulate that, of course a low hp car will not have fast acceleration no matter the torque but whatever little acceleration it has, will be instantly at the divers disposition, making torque more noticeable in a car than hp in normal street and highway speeds.

      @tails300 Před 6 lety

      All in all hp and torque are equally important, you kinda want your hp to match you torque or at least be close together in numbers. My car for instance has 185 hp and 178 lb ft of torque, so the VW might accelerate off the line a little quicker, but my car would probably over take it quickly because of the higher hp.

    • @Maxx61
      @Maxx61 Před 5 lety

      Torque is the grunt you feel that pushes you back in your seat during acceleration. Think of horsepower as what determines how long you feel that torque.

    Package and no one will notice it? Why not put a front and rear leaf spring suspensions and front and rear drum brakes no one will notice the different. Why not sell the new Arteon R line with Torsion Beam package and same thing no would notice the different. I feel bad for those who believe the package thing he mentioned and actually went out and buy the new Jetta. You want torsion beam and cheap get a Corolla.

    I love Jettas but this Mk7 pisses me off on some stupid points,. The electronic hand brake, I hate them. I'm one of the 20% standard drivers and control of the hand brake is important to me. Then there is that trunk lid! It has a remote opener but it doesn't open, It unlatches! What's the point of that? You have to lift the the trunk lid up manually anyway. It's probably the most dangerous thing about the car, it crashes down on your head unless you jamb it up as far as it will go. I suspect you'd have to go way back to the 1920s to find another car that doesn't open when you pop the catch. And then there is the weird passenger seat that's so low it's uncomfortable and with no adjustment up or down. I think this may be the last Jetta for me, maybe even the last VW.

    • @cargueone1971
      @cargueone1971 Před 6 lety

    • @lego4virgo
      @lego4virgo Před 6 lety

      You don't own a Mk7 at all do you? Nor have you ever driven one--cuz that last statement about no adjustment for the seat is pretty much incorrect. It does have a seat pad control to move the seat up--I had to lower ours last night cuz the wife had set it so high, I was hitting my head on the inside door panel.

    • @poetryplace
      @poetryplace Před 6 lety

      yes, I do own one but maybe the Canadian model is different from other countries. The reality is that a 2019 Jetta Comfortline, bought in Canada, does not have a hight adjustable front passenger seat.

    • @lego4virgo
      @lego4virgo Před 6 lety

      Let me apologize to you right now. When I first read this, I only saw height adjustable and seat, and thought you meant driver's not passenger's. Re-reading your original post and your answer to me--you're absolutely correct. There is no height adjustable passenger seat, and that truly is a mystery, since the manual controls could easily have been swapped from the driver to the passenger with no real impact. I have a 'S'. My lesson learned? Take your time reading a post before commenting. Thanks for the clarification, and cheers.

      @solobellimino2356 Před 6 lety +1

      chocolatewheelchair aesthetically,
      I prefer wheel gap closed, and the sporty feel of a proper tuned suspension. I usually like my cars just a bit firm. The Jetta is a world car, not everywhere have the best of roads, so i can understand why the car sits a little high.

    • @chocolatewheelchair
      @chocolatewheelchair Před 6 lety +1

      Solo Bellimino thanks for reply. Thing is for every day driving which is def what this car is for, have more clearance, more tire with less rim and coincidently less sporty look, people who need that in their Jetta could do the GLI or after market but honestly not sure your experience but customizing a new car always results in problems in reliability and functionality
