  • In this video we pick a 3.6L Johnson/Evinrude 250 V8. The engine is a 3.6 liter 2 stroke v8 outboard boat engine. For the car it'll power. We wanted something small and light, this Datsun 510 Wagon was the perfect candidate for the swap!

    I've owned two Datsun 510 wagons in my life (and still have a 510 2 door). The 2 and 4 door Datsun 510's have the semi trailing arm independent rear suspension. The wagons have the solid rear. axle as you noticed. All have a common front suspension. The 68/69 510's had a different dash and 68's had Howdy Doody wipers. My guess is yours is is a 70-72. the 73's had big chunks of rubber on the bumpers. That car has a LOT of rust. Hope you are able to fulfill this dream. Take care of your wife and baby. They are more precious than any car or engine.

    The part beneath the engine is known as the midsection / exhaust housing.
    Those black electronic doohickeys you were talking about are VRO pumps, they automatically mix the two stroke oil with the gas so that you don't have to although they were kind of problematic and best if they're just deleted all together.
    I have quite a bit of experience with two stroke engines and marine engines in general as I am a marine mechanic on the side, those are pretty cool engines and they sound pretty cool but they really don't make a lot of power and it's all super high RPM power. You need to take this into account with your gear ratios.
    Those engines also really don't have a thrust bearing per se so if you're planning on using a manual transmission you will destroy the engine if you put any thrust loading against the crankshaft.
    That ignition system does not require any external power to produce spark, there's a stator underneath the flywheel that generates electricity to power the system, that black box on top that has all the wires under it is the ignition control module.
    On two stroke engines like that one, timing advance is almost more important than the actual opening of the throttle plates on the carburetors, The ignition pickup underneath the flywheel moves with the throttle linkage to advance the timing and the relationship between the movement of the pickup and the opening of the butterflies is very critical.

    • @hartwickperformance
      @hartwickperformance  Před rokem +7

      Thank you for this info, I am planning on running a 4L60e Automatic behind it. It being a 2 stroke I kinda anticipated the low torque, the car being light I think a 3.73 gear will do good since the tire diameter is also really small, making the engine have to work less to get the car moving.

    • @lustfulvengance
      @lustfulvengance Před rokem +9

      @@hartwickperformance That transmission should work fine, but you're going to need a really high stall converter to take advantage of the high RPM power band.
      You can run fuel injection with that engine no problem but you need to retain the reed valves underneath where the round cab ports are like where the screw fell those are critical to it being able to scavenge and run.
      Also like I said before you need to retain the ignition advance mechanism so that linkage on the side that you said you were going to remove you kind of have to keep that and it has to be synced with the throttle butterflies in a very specific way or you won't get anywhere near the maximum amount of power out of it.
      This is not like a four-stroke where you can just open the throttle butterfly and let a distributor advance the ignition timing automatically.
      Also that exhaust manifold that's on top where the intake would be on a normal engine is water cooled and that needs to be incorporated into the cooling system, you really need to run some sort of expansion chamber for it to scavenge properly as well (like the big bulbous ones you see on two-stroke dirt bikes, it doesn't have to be that elaborate but it does need some sort of expansion chamber)

I've seen one of those Evinrude V8's here on YT used in a sand rail but since I'm not a boat person I've never seen one in person. Also, as someone from a rust-belt state I will say your Datsun would fall under a rating of 1.5 or a 2 at most, it looks rather solid. The rotted rocker panels and holes in the fenders are minor rust damage for us. Of course I don't know the condition of your floorboards or the cars frame. If those are fine with just surface rust then rot in the rockers and fenders just tend to be minor damage. :)

    That little wagon is basically the brother to my Opel sport wagon, same wheel base and track width and all. Only difference was yours was a little lighter when new but probably a lot lighter now with all the rust😂. Im going to use eithe an Atlas 2900/ 4l60, a K24/th350/400 or either a Fusion 2.5/6r80. Whichever i decide to use it will be turbo and 400+whp, it will be a daily and may hit the 1/8 mile with it a few times since it will weigh less than stock at 2450lbs. The original Opel engine was a 1.9 all iron and the K24/th400 is 90lbs less than the 1.9/auto so that leaves room for turbo weight to be added and still lighter

    You got my sub and notifications on now. I always wanted to put a big 2 stroke outboard in an MG, or a Triumph Spitfire! A Datsun is cool though 👍love the idea.

    Because that is a two-stroke Marine engine, you can actually lay it over on its side if you want to, with the intake facing upward

    Down in Smarr Georgia, Monroe County, I flew one of these off of 109 ft cliff and landed upside down in a beaver pond. Will it was a 1975 Datsun 710 station wagon, it looked like this but it was a little bigger with a 4 liter straight-six in it.

    How are you going to do the cooling system? in the outboard config the waste water goes into the exhaust to keep it cool & also muffle it. But if you do not have water going in there the aluminium exhaust will melt?

    To get bolts out of aluminum like that. keep the bolt cold, heat the part where the threads are and heat it with a propane torch careful to not over heat it . The aluminum will expand more than the bolt , making the threads release!!

      Yes, at the moment I'm planning on using an electric water pump to a SBC as i could find one easily if it goes out on the road.

    As a Toyota technician we used to have to go to Jacksonville port because Toyota used to conduct their advanced level training there. You were warned in no uncertain terms that one the class was over in the afternoons you were to go straight to your motel room and stay there until the next morning. Numerous technicians went there for training and thought they could experience Jacksonville’s nightlife only to get beaten up, robbed or stabbed. I’m sure there are high- end sections of Jacksonville that are not bad but working people never see those areas.
    I have a concealed carry permit and I never do a FB Marketplace deal without carrying and I personally won’t meet at a person’s house if I don’t know them or at least know of them.

    thing to understand about 2 stroke boat engines, more often than not you will find at least 1 dead cylinder. a dead hole can also mean dead crankshaft in a 2 stroke since flying debris takes out rods and main bearings and can in some cases cause the cylinders to be scored beyond repair. do yourself a favor and compression test that thing before wasting even more time on it. i have 3 jet boat motors in my garage right now, each one with mangled pistons, cylinders, damaged rods and some damaged cranks.
