These pictures were taken in Reykjavik and surrounding areas on 7-9 July, 1926. Mr. Burton Holmes and his assistant Franklin Lavarre were among the passangers of SS Carinthia which made a call at the port of Reykjavik during a sub-Arctic cruise subsequiently taking them to Hammerfest and Nordkap in Norway. (Source: Morgunbladid daily newspaper, 9 July 1926.)
I was in Iceland on holidays last month. Loved it. Loved Reykjavik and the Golden Circle Route. Wonderful country, friendly people. I even had one of those Bonus supermarkets near my hotel. Lots of strange and cool stuff there.
It's funny that the Icelandic HORSE was called a pony in this video when it is actually... a HORSE
Já! Íslenski hesturinn getur alveg orðið 160cm frá hófum til hæðarkambs.
Thank you kindly for sharing this amazing film with us all BigTime Bravo 💕✌💕
Love how it cut in the end
It's quite sad when you realize that probably nobody of those who we see in this film is alive yet
Kar W. I was thinking the same thing myself--but, of course, that would be true of any documentary footage from 1926. In any case, I find it fascinating to see past images of this country I like so much.
Kar W. Perhaps one or two of these young kids could be in deep old age today but it's difficult.
I am sure someone who was a child back in those days is still alive and is able to see this.
It's 92 year old video - There is a woman in Iceland who celebrated her 109th birthday.
Me too.
Fantastic and very rare video !
Happy People, no war, isolated country.
Magnað!
Wow this was great! Thanks for sharing this clip . Neat little country Iceland is despite the economic situation they are in today.
Thanks. I have corrected it.
Iceland alone has bin one of the biggest contributors to research of European history. They were also the first Europeans to discover America 500 years before Kolombus. Fun fact the elf language in Lord of the Rings is based on the Icelandic language and runes.
There's also the staggering advancements the vikings made in technology in Scandinavia. The viking boats alone were considered a masterpeace.
That's an amazing footage, it's so wonderful to see Reykjavik like that. Are the names of the 'young vikings' listed anywhere?
If you stop the video at 1:35 you can see the company logo for BSR (Bifreiðastöð Reykjavíkur) a taxi firm that i currently work for and has been operating since 1921.
Eggert Thorarensen Perhaps one of your ancestors is in this video, like your grandma or grandpa or one of your great Grandparents as well, if they lived in Reykjavik!
@TheIcelandicPatriot
What do you think about Bjork and Sigur Ros?
That wrestling match sure wasn't fair!
the Kid was way lighter than the big guy.
Awesome scene+ Hot Spring wash & dry ;-)
Greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷 ❤❤
@13craj There are more places on the northern hemisphere than Alaska, but the song the Land of the midnight sun refers to Iceland. But Alaska, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland and parts of Russia all have midnight sun during the summers due to their placement on the globe.
Awesome!
Very nice! Does anyone know the occasion in the beginning of the reel where everyone's dressed up and parading? Maybe we could establish a narrower timeline than just "the twenties". :)
Could it be for film crew and tourists (big cruise ship arrival)?
this video makes me so happy
Brilliant! I purchased a film (not quite as interesting) of a similar date of a ship landing at Heimaey and then Reykjavík a few years back which I had transferred to DVD and then donated the original to the Icelandic Film Archive. I must get around to uploading it!
At 1:45, after the text about tourists--that's in front of the culture house (Safnahúsið). You can just barely see the statue in the park of Ingolfur Arnarson!
wonderful
@pilarp23
This was a special occasion so people allowed their kids to stay up late, foreign digintaries being something of a novely a tthe time, but it is only a small part of the film, but if you go to modern Iceland during the summer weekends you would be surprised ....
What do you think of their music and books?
Here after reading Hallgrímur Helgason, Arnaldur Indriðason and Halldór Laxness books...
This is amasing!
Just a slight correction to your title, "travelfilmarchive": Reykjavik was/is the *capital" Iceland--not the "capitol." :)
Mi home town. I was borne in Reykjavik 1961.
I can not count on sound, it's still very interesting!
@pilarp23, the summer in Iceland is a 24 hour daylight!
@raulsaenz Reykjavík are 2 works
Reykja - Vík
R - eykja
V - ík
( And then the last letter is K
RVK
@TheIcelandicPatriot Nice one ! :-)
Sér einhver ömmu sína og afa?
Love iceland
Did the clothing smell like sulphur (3:08)?
1:34 hvaða gata er þetta?
Love from india
@alli1009 Is that really your grandfater? Because I was thinking that maybe some of those kids are someone's grandfathers now! It makes me glad really :')
True
@MiaMountainLover They may be strong but they are still rather small and therefore are called the "Icelandic pony". That's the formal name. Read about it in wikipedia.
It's not an insul to call it a pony, it's just a name.
@kakake12 í alvöru?
Kodacro- o - om ! Everything looks OK in black and white or what?
Its the same name like Reykjavík today, but this was a simple fisherman town, very diffrent from the tourist city Reykjavík of today
Well that's one myth out of the world - thanks! I know they're not ponies, and if I did think they were my own three horses would kick my butt into the next world! People who call my horses "ponies" are in for a long lecture, but the no-word-for-pony issue was something I heard recently and needed to check. So thanks again :)
Á ensku 'creek' þýðir 'small bay', en bara í Bretlandi. Í Bandaríkjunum orðið þýðir aðeins 'small river'. 'Smoke creek' er vond þýðing því 'vík' þýðir ekki 'á'. Betri að segja 'smoke bay', þótt fyrir 'bay-ið' er smátt. 'Flói' er bara stór, breið vík, ekki satt? Á ensku, orðið 'bay' hefur breiðari þýðing en þú heldur.
ohh i love with!!
also it said population 21 000 in 1926. that is wrong, more like 98.483 to be accurate
2:09 Oscar II? But he was the former king of Sweden and Norway!
there is no 24 hours sun in reykjavik. because iceland is south of the polar circle. norway ist the land of midnightsun. the sun is gone for a liitle bit more than 3 hours in reykjavik,in the summer. only the icelandic island grimsey is north of the polar circle....
Sennilega leið fólki ekki illa á þessum tíma. Minna stress!
Eða ekki
Veit ekki alveg með það
no , 60% lives around reykjavik (near town such as kopavogur ) ...
Kannski enn betri væri 'smoke inlet' eða 'smoke cove', en ekki 'creek'.
It is because in the summertime Reykjavik has 24 hour sunlight, it is the land of the midnight sun.
@bubblestarzz I've never known a person that has lived longer than 80 years, I'm Icelandic.....
@15joey04 Eee thanks?
👺🙏🏾🔥
R e y k j a V i K is the way it has been and explains RVK, wheteher your version will catch on or not.
I agree that RVK has changed and was more alive like other cities, since most of the population was pedestrian, not isolated in their automobiles.
perhaps it means population of the town))
The icelandic HORSE is a horse because it has the bone structure of a horse, not a pony, there is a physical difference which classifies him as a horse, Wikipedia isn't always right.
@TheLucasleddy Thats a bit random question but ill answer it. Im not much of a fan of them but i don't mind them. Exept Björk she's a bit weird but then again so are all of os :)
Mamma mín fæddist á 3ja áratug (á Ensku er það twenties) svo amma sáluga gæti verið þarna með barnavagn ;-) Frábært að sjá þessar myndir.
Svona verður þetta eftir Icesave ruglið "back to Basic"
2019
Those were the good times
@MiaMountainLover Yes they are indeed strong, but they still are ponies. Only us Icelanders call them horses but internationally they are ponies. Small, but very strong. Nothing to be ashamed about that.
@olafurhh03 jááá... En creek er ekki heldur vík
ótrúlegt að sjá ísland þarna og núna í dag.
wonderful video - some truly sicko comments though that have nothing to do with Iceland - the moderator for this channel really ought to clean out the hateful filth...
LOL AT 3:30 1926 ICELANDIC WRESTLING IS HILARIOUS.
It's more honest that the WWE... no fake stuff.
What about these great people?
2:42 er afi minn friðjón haha
Polepally kaveramapeta jedcherala Hyderabad. app's
So they called that "Icelandic Wrestling" back then : )
I don’t know why anyone settled there in the first place !
gæti verið að eitthvað af krökkunum sé langafi þarna var hann 7 ára =)
@FUNxH1TM4N Ég er að seigja þér þetta af því að hann er alvöru ættjarðarvinnur. Hann var allt sem þú ert ekki.
Love is stronger then hate.
@FUNxH1TM4N So do i.
anyone can type anything into wikipedia
They could be classified as ponies in size, but they are called the horse. The Icelandic horse. Not the Icelandic pony. Read the wikipedia article you so boldly stated to say "pony" was the formal name. It's not. It's arguably classifiable as a pony, but formally it is the Icelandic Horse.
Please go read it, and improve your reading comprehension.
Somebody please put a Bjork song as soundtrack of this silent movie. =)
I've always been told they're horses because Icelandic has no word for pony and people kind of stuck with that. Of course I could be wrong, my grasp of Icelandic is extremely little haha :)
Do women in Iceland still dress like they are at 2:48?
Yes, this is the national costume so it's still worn by females today
What do you think? It's our national costume and it was only worn on special occasions back then and is only worn on special occasions now.
Mainly on Independence day, but other than that no. Not on a daily-basis.
I thought this might be the reason, rugreb83, but there's still something wrong. Look at all those people, especially children. If it's midnight shouldn't they be sleeping in their beds? Everybody seems to be performing daytime activities: people walk the streets, drive cars, ride bicycles and horse-ride. Quite odd for the middle of the night even if it's a bright night. I'd rather expect the city to be less crowded at midnight.
Quote: When i see my country i see a modern miracle, a country of peace and stability. Me.
@FUNxH1TM4N No i figured that out in your first or second comment. I just wanted you to admitt that.
Even Hitler was able to love. You can't love anything nor can anyone love you because your hate takes all the space.
sææææll þetta er skritið....en samt svalt.
@kristjanarn Sorry. Þetta er bara vondur ávani að rífast á CZcams :)
Oh put a sock in it. You're beating a dead pony!
flott!
Psssst, it´s "capital", not "capitol".
Reykjavík is two words put together. reykja and vík and vík means creek and not bay. Bay in icelandic is flói. And RVK is correct.
mjög gaman af þessu myndbandi af gömlu Reykjavæik
@FUNxH1TM4N Þú getur bara hunsað mig því þú getur ekki rökrætt við mig á kurteisan hátt. Blótaðu bara, ég þarf þess ekki. O and one more thing, við leifum flótttamönnum að lifa hér og margir af þeim eru svart fólk. Hvernig geta þeir búið hér ef við leifum þeim það ekki? Think before you write.
@FUNxH1TM4N Taktu eftir því hvernig Ísland er eftir þessir hommar og in flytjanda fólk kom inn.
Mér sýnist þetta vera ansi sterk haturs orð.
Since humanity descends from ~200 people (source: "African tribe populated rest of the world" on "The Telegraph"),
and Iceland was settled by a sizable mix of Norse, Irish and Scottish people (source: Wikipedia),
then Iceland is not any more incestuous than the rest of the world. So incest is not to blame for IGOROZKARSKY's bigoted opinions.
Your statement on gene mixing is very correct, though.
@olafurhh03 Getur ekki verið, Ef þú skrifar Creek á Google translate kemur krík, Og krík er ekki til :O
Times when people appreciated little good things in life and didn't whine for small things, like people do now. Back then, people worked hard and grew to a tough people. Todays kids are probably sissy, whining and weak when they grow up. Te best movies, best music, best vehicles, best fashion, best furniture and best people were in the old times, like in the 60's. Only thing I want is a time machine, so I could go back to the old times. Too bad I born in 90's :(
Pretty faces
They don't make like that anymore
