▸ Who Is Batman: Batman is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, and debuted in the 27th issue of the comic book Detective Comics on March 30, 1939. In the DC Universe continuity, Batman is the alias of Bruce Wayne, a wealthy American playboy, philanthropist, and industrialist who resides in Gotham City. Batman's origin story features him swearing vengeance against criminals after witnessing the murder of his parents Thomas and Martha as a child, a vendetta tempered with the ideal of justice. He trains himself physically and intellectually, crafts a bat-inspired persona, and monitors the Gotham streets at night. Kane, Finger, and other creators accompanied Batman with supporting characters, including his sidekicks Robin and Batgirl; allies Alfred Pennyworth, James Gordon, and Catwoman; and foes such as the Penguin, the Riddler, Two-Face, and his archenemy, the Joker.
Kane conceived Batman in early 1939 to capitalize on the popularity of DC's Superman; although Kane frequently claimed sole creation credit, Finger substantially developed the concept from a generic superhero into something more bat-like. The character received his own spin-off publication, Batman, in 1940. Batman was originally introduced as a ruthless vigilante who frequently killed or maimed criminals, but evolved into a character with a stringent moral code and strong sense of justice. Unlike most superheroes, Batman does not possess any superpowers, instead relying on his intellect, fighting skills, and wealth. The 1960s Batman television series used a camp aesthetic, which continued to be associated with the character for years after the show ended. Various creators worked to return the character to his darker roots in the 1970s and 1980s, culminating with the 1986 miniseries The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller.
DC has featured Batman in many comic books, including comics published under its imprints such as Vertigo and Black Label. The longest-running Batman comic, Detective Comics, is the longest-running comic book in the United States. Batman is frequently depicted alongside other DC superheroes, such as Superman and Wonder Woman, as a member of organizations such as the Justice League and the Outsiders. In addition to Bruce Wayne, other characters have taken on the Batman persona on different occasions, such as Jean-Paul Valley / Azrael in the 1993-1994 "Knightfall" story arc; Dick Grayson, the first Robin, from 2009 to 2011; and Jace Fox, son of Wayne's ally Lucius, as of 2021. DC has also published comics featuring alternate versions of Batman, including the incarnation seen in The Dark Knight Returns and its successors, the incarnation from the Flashpoint (2011) event, and numerous interpretations from Elseworlds stories.

I thought the issue was good. It definitely went out of it's way to highlight Bruce's mortality (compared to the other members of the League) yet it also showed his iron resolve. He didn't even hesitate to try and save the plane, even as he knew he was going to die, he didn't stop or falter. That element of putting the mission, the goal, the objective or even one's principles beyond the self is so characteristic of Batman.

Rob i hope you cover the epilogue too where he comforts gotham girl cuz i think that's one of the absolute best comic moments I've seen ever.
this issue of Batman was soo good. i know a lot of others didnt like it cuz it wasnt a traditional Bats comic. it really got the feels though. You explained it really well. this arc was a slow burn as some would say, but by the end was freaking fantastic. Rob, you really need to get to the first comics released from rebirth not just Superman and Bats. Green Lanterns, Green Arrow, Flash, and Aquaman have all been great. All of them finished there first arcs as well. I know you are going to just do Action Comics and Detective Comics but i think those are done to death and everyone knows them or read them

I'm glad you have these up. I went to a comic book shop recently and saw issues 17 and 18 there, so I decided to pick them up and just continue on as they released from there. This is a nice way to learn what's happened so far.
In this first arc of "I am Gotham," I really enjoyed issue one and five they were great and I also liked the Easter eggs of batman gadgets from the movies to the cartoons

Secondly I was excited about Batman Rebirth as well, but Detective Comics have been on another Level, so That's the Batman story I think I'm gonna stick with

Good stuff, Comicstorian covered this but his angle is he likes to tell the story short enough for you to get the main points. Where you give the details which is appreciated. Not to take away from Comicstorian, he's great too.

Once I read the first issue of the new Batman written by Tom King I was hooked. Having picked up his work in The Vision I was expecting a very different voice when compared to Snyder and he delivered. It might not be something a lot of New 52 readers expected, but I think it's going to be a really good change and that he will tell some great stories. In for the long haul on this book.
This was my intro to rebirth and I knew here rebirth was gonna be something special.

besides the chronology being a little off (which is okay) i dont think Duke is a new "Robin" when Batman gives him the suit in the Rebirth issue, Duke says he does not want to be another Robin and Batman says hes trying something new. I wish they would give Duke a proper name already. Though Damian is still Robin so I dont think Duke will be a Robin, unless Robin graduates or something.

im totally loving the new batman comics for rebirth, with all star batman being my favorite.
Ending reminded me of that time in Justice League when Batman crashes the Watchtower into the Thanagarian generator. Whats funny is that like in that episode, someone like superman saves Batman prior to his sacrifice. Then again, it's happened so many times now, like in Batman/Superman Most Wanted, Batman flies a mech into an asteroid before it destroys the world, and ofcourse supes is there to bring his body back to earth. They should turn this into a running gag.

Duke isn't a Robin, he's "something different" he goes by Lark.
Duke is not a Robin. Batman didn't want another Robin. Duke is meant to be something else.
Stephen Jacobs he should be partners with bat wing or whatever, they seem to have a way bigger advantage over other robins anyway, where as it was more or less an accident that dick and Jason met batman, but as far as Tim, duke and fox it seemed like they knew they would be robins and wanted to be

Man, how guilty would you feel if you looked at your comms and saw like 69 missed calls from B-man. Like to me Batman seems quite proud and almost angry when he has to ask for help from anyone that isnt in the Bat family. For him to suck it up and admit that he needs help seems like a big thing and THEN for no one to answer when he does probably just reinforces his "I dont need you guys" Broody persona. I would feel terrible anyway. Soz Batbro had wonder woman over so.. you know man.

If you don't know Robin Chronology you don't know DC Chronology, because Robin is very important to measuring time in DC...
In chronology Robins are...
1. Dick Grayson
2. Jason Todd
3. Tim Drake
4. Stephanie Brown (though some people debat this)
-. Tim Drake becomes Robin again.
5. Damien Wayne
New 52 messes up Tim Drake and Stephanie Brown though so Tim and Stephanie may never have technically been Robin.
Also New52 did change Batman chronology a lot.
Duke is a Robin? ........sigh...... what about Damien?

Yeah when Batman made her Robin she took Tim Drake's place, and she was soo hated by everyone, DC KILLED her of in the same arc, and she later "returned" as Batgirl. If she was really a proper Robin she would have returned as Robin
