In this Slay the Spire gameplay, Baalorlord does an Ascension 20 run with Defect. First, he gives tips on choosing a path and a starting bonus. I use a few mods for Slay the Spire. All of them are Quality-of-Life improvements and do not have any effect on the gameplay. Here are all of the mods I have active:

Taking the frozen orb at the end of act2 was the biggest brain play I think I've seen in STS in quite a while, not for the orbs, but to push the energy orb from nuclear battery over for cables to proc on turn 1. Well played sir.

"Take a frozen core over a runic pyramid with a negative focus deck." -- I mean, it was absolutely the correct move and I'm not sure I would have seen it.
When I saw pyramid I thought no way we're taking that here with multiple retains and machine learnings, it's just so bad when your hand is full all the time. It's also really bad versus time eater because you're damned if you play tons of cards there or damned if you don't since your hand is full so if your hand is bad eater will whack you.
You mean to tell me that there's other characters other than the ironclad... Who knew?!?!
I love me some Ironclad to be sure but BOY HOWDY DOES DEFECT GET ME PUMPED

Ironclad runs are my fav but I was itching for some non Ironclads.
I've always felt the Defect is the hardest character to play.. if you don't get a reliable source of additional orb slots or focus by the end of the second act, you're pretty hooped. Capacitor as the starting relic might fix this, or having a starting card/common card provide an additional orb slot on upgrade
I do believe the win/loss data proves you correct
He is also the hardest character to win with consistently. You are strong act 1, but the transition into mid/late game can be really awkward if you don't find the broken scaling or going infinite Stuff. Also really struggles to survive Turns 2 and 3 vs Spear and Shield and Heart.
@@Bishop1415 Maybe I will mess around with a mod. I feel like a change to the starting relic and some common cards would really help things

Finally, a non-Ironclad run!
I think if Baalor kept a streak counter on screen for his Iron lad runs it would help to keep excited for what he is doing. I understand he doesn't want to stress about the streaks and make the streak the entire focus, but it would help me to follow the overall meta storyline going on and it would be more interesting to watch Ironclad over and over.
@@davids182 agreed. Having just the videos and contextual inference that’s there’s an attempt for a mono-character record is hard to follow without further info about the streak.
This was the most fun defect run i've seen in months. What a weird deck.
The most insane thing happened with this video…. So I saw this was in fact not a clad run and also it had a picture of the compile card so I clicked to watch it….. somehow in the exact instant it switched me to the win streak challenge from 2022 and it was win #6 so it literally was a run where he played defect and in his first card reward chose a compile driver…….. I literally thought it was this video the entire time. I never knew it switched. I never knew it wasn’t this video…. I just thought I was watching this newest video and it was that old win streak run and I guess I completely forgot that run because I was watching it like it was new…. lol

I feel like a doof for not realizing compile driver gives draw power… I really thought it always said “deal 7 for each unique orb”
Great use of gold plated cables with the plasma orb here! I had a run recently where I boss swapped, found gold plates cables then picked up nuclear battery at the act 1 boss for a cool +2 energy per turn every time.
Agree on strikes being best removes for Defect. I think this is because of 1) Orbs gives passive value so fights last longer, you want to be block heavy and 2) Ball Lightning and Cold Snap are Strike++ that you likely want both in your deck and getting them early and not removing strikes makes you too attack heavy.
Gold-plated cables with a plasma orb is nuts; don't think I've seen that interaction before.
Not gonna lie, a 16 in a row clad bender got tough after awhile. Glad to see some defect splashed back in!
Build your own lantern at home! All you need is a nuclear battery, frozen core and gold played cables. Better than store bought!

... guess this explains why I'm still not on A20 with any of the characters :D
How fitting, the Ironspam briefly gets interrupted by a defect run, just as I get the "win with a 5-card deck" achievement with the defect ! Also perfected the heart with in that run, that was such a lucky deck and relics combo ???
(joking with ironspam, it's my fav character I love seeing him more pn the channel, I'll miss him when you will finally finish his 20 streak and switch to another character...)
((also for other commenters who might want to know : my deck was 2 holograms, 1 darkness, 1 recursion and 1 reinforced body. Notable relics were : chemX, pocketwatch, torii and rod combo which made the perfect heart possible, a useless astrolabe from which I removed all the cards it gave me, empty cage, no energy relics wtf ??? well I had a lantern and a sundial giving me energy turn one and basically every 3 turns with such a small deck, like a powered up happy flower haha...
It was Ascension 1, but I ended up visiting only two elites per chapters, some of them are scary when you try to take as few cards as posible, and I boss-swapped to Black Star at the start so I got plenty of relics even without fighting much elites.
Such a weird run, looking back at it I almost can't believe I perfected the heart lol, but the synergy between the relics really saved my bum haha))

The unusual choice of Frozen Core over pyramid is one of my favorite things about one of my favorite archetypes being played here!!

🙋♂️ Interaction question: With molten egg, if you were to have taken “Hello World” would any common attack card added to your deck during the fight be upgraded?
Egg relic upgrades only apply to cards permanently added to the deck. For cards created during combat, you need Watcher's Master Reality card.
No, it also works the same way with cards that add other temp cards to your deck per fight, ex: having a frozen egg and playing white noise does not upgrade the power generated from white noise. This is why hello world is considered an act1 early game power because late game it rarely will enhance a deck, or in many cases, hurt late game decks.

@@tomsommer5118 if you add madnesas before that than if it works as i think it works its infinite
@@sober667 true and you should also only need one rebound to cost 0 right. but in order to set it up you need a hand only consisting of 2 rebound with one being 0 cost, spinning top and an empty draw pile.

@@tomsommer5118 yeah you prob can just modify deck to be like that with cheats so have 2 rebounds and 1 madness and spining top so you cast madness one of rebound goes to 0 cost and you good

I like to play a game where I guess what streamers will do before they do it and I'm pretty good at it but when I play and think the exact same way I can't win. I wish I know why I barely get through act 2 a20s.
I know personally that I watch Baalor and I’m going “noooo!” At decisions he makes because I would NEVER do that. Then I remember there’s a reason he’s got a Guinness world record on this game and I don’t. 😂 Baalor has a different kind of brain where he can think in 100 directions at once
You could try recording yourself, for personal use. It is hard to do but could help find a pattern.
@yunakitty2 for me it's the opposite lol. I guess the paths and the turns and the cards he takes like 80 percent of thr time then I get killed by my first elite lol
