Congratulations on finding the best new metal band to come along in decades. In their five years of existence as a band, they set a standard that easily puts them on a par with the greatest bands of metal’s golden age. Their founder and bassist announced her departure on Aug 17, 2021, so we can only hope they find a way forward. Meanwhile, we console ourselves with their astonishing catalogue of work.
    Some background:
They were formed in 2016 from the remnants of a legendary all-girl Japanese metal band called Destrose (yes, all-girl metal has been a thing in Japan since at least 1981). Miho (bass, chief headbanger and soul of the band) had a vision of a new band in the style of the greatest European bands of the golden age of metal. She recruited her former bandmate Haruna (drums, 4'9" “pocket nuclear reactor”); they needed two world-class guitarists, and so they went and found Midori and Miyako, who were with other bands. The whole group then found Asami, the singer, who was doing soul and blues at the time (she also trained in ballet). Miho and Miyako have composed most of their music, in collaboration with Mao, the lead composer of another band called Lightbringer, but Midori has also been getting into the act. Asami writes a lot of the lyrics.
They studied all the great historical metal bands going back to Purple and Sabbath, through Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Helloween, Slayer etc. and aced it all. They toured with Dragonforce in 2019, and word from those in attendance is that next time around, it will be the ladies headlining. They have incorporated some of the best of each of those bands into their arsenal, and at this point they’ve taken it to another level.
This is one of their usual first songs for reactors, and rightly so--you get a good sense of the band. They do everything from soulful power ballads to heavy thrash, and almost every song includes face-melting solos by Miyako and Midori. The two guitarists are quite different in style and tone. Midori (blonde ponytail) is the extrovert and speed demon; Miyako is the introvert, with the more soulful feel. Midori uses a cleaner tone, Miyako uses more distortion, pinch harmonics and pedal effects. The contrast makes their duets rich and dynamic. As another reviewer said, "It seems criminal these two are allowed to be in the same band." Either one can smoke most of the shredders in the classic metal bands.
Miyako is also a professional-level classical concert pianist, and was headed for a career in classical music, before picking up the guitar. If you want to see what she can do on the piano, watch “Swan Song” WITH the prelude, which is Chopin’s “Revolutionary Etude”. Miyako wrote “Swan Song” using elements from several classical pieces including the Etude. This link should work: czcams.com/video/WBhtqgiXEA4/video.html; but if it is taken down, you can watch two clips back to back: czcams.com/video/hDBjiQI9cyc/video.html and czcams.com/video/uEsEWISc8Q0/video.html I promise, it’s worth it.
They are generally best live. You should next check out their most recently posted live clip, “Set the World on Fire” czcams.com/video/99zsH6iG_6c/video.html. Other live songs to check out are "Edge of the World" and "We the United", back to back: czcams.com/video/sl0-U-ykJCU/video.html They form an incredible journey from darkness and despair to light and hope. Also, “Empty Daydream”, which starts as a ballad and becomes a real rocker: czcams.com/video/lXh_uMM94jU/video.html
For a thrasher with heavy Metallica vibes, “Break the Wall” czcams.com/video/G021aP2ao6Y/video.html includes two gorgeous and completely contrasting solos by M&M.
For a heart-stopping ballad, “Epilogue” czcams.com/video/1ynnXDfEnnY/video.html (this includes a second song, your choice whether or not to react to both)
Finally, while it’s generally true their live clips are best, their MV’s are epic and worth seeing:
    "When Destinies Align" czcams.com/video/hLFelI93VkM/video.html
    "Glory to the World" czcams.com/video/-wJtD2XEXH4/video.html
    "Winds of Transylvania" czcams.com/video/HsE4Ub_Pjh8/video.html.
You'll get lots of suggestions, just one thing: don't bother with Bloodstock footage, the sound quality is poor. Best to take suggestions with actual links. Also, you can’t go wrong with any of their official clips. Welcome to the Wolf-Pack!

They just dropped their song "Set the World on Fire" Live. Absolutely downright Speed thrash like Metallica's Blackened. Give it a listen, it's mind-blowing that it took 30 years for Thrash to come back like this. Its like seeing an old friend. Great review btw, glad you were pleasantly surprised.

The guitar player on the right, Miyako, is the musical genius who writes much of their musical scores. She's also a classically trained pianist since age 3, which explains the piano on stage. She plays on piano quite a few of their songs - check out Swan Song with the Chopin Etude intro and you'll see just how talented she is on both piano and guitar.

In your mind, it would have been "J-Metal = BABYMETAL". They are exceptional because they are a unit created by the entertainment agency's "fusion of idol and metal" project.
In Japan, band activities have become active since the first visit of "The Beatles" about 50 years ago. Thousands of rock bands are currently active. There are more than 100 female bands. Among them, one of the top groups is LOVEBITES. They made their major debut in just six months after their formation, are active mainly in Japan / UK / EU, and have been asked to perform at several famous metal festivals.

What you have to understand is Midori, guitar player stage left, maybe shredding her guitar but mentally she is making a grocery shopping list and that requires some concentration! 😀 Miyako, guitar player stage right, is smiling away at various amusing anecdotes she heard back stage. 😀 If you do want to discover further Lovebites, have a look at these two live songs that are played consecutively but are on one CZcams link. They really show the insane talent and metal styles that Lovebites write and arrange into their songs. Epilogue and Don't Bite The Dust: czcams.com/video/1ynnXDfEnnY/video.html

    LOVEBITES - Holy War lyrics:
Look at those black clouds, it’s going to rain blood
People live in fear, covered in mud
Singing oh Gloria to change the prophecy
    We are the metal warriors
    Fighting the darkness for sisters
There is a thousand, a thousand of evils
Hush, do not wake up Satan’s devils
Singing Hallelujah to save our majesty
    We are the metal warriors
    Fighting the darkness for brothers
    Shining blade and burning heart
Into the Gates of Hell we march
Immortal soul, let there be light
    Into the Eye of Heaven
    Eagles at a holy war
    Fly higher than the sun
We are one for all and all for one forevermore
Kingdom of Heaven, never shall we fall
    Reincarnation, wait for your call
Singing oh, Gloria to change the prophecy
    We are the metal warriors
    Fighting the darkness for sisters
    Morning star and dying moon
Into the Gates of Hell we march
Mighty soul, let there be hope
    Into the Eye of Heaven
    Eagles at a holy war
    Fly higher than the sun
Stand up in the name of the God of heavy metal
What do we live for? What do we fight for, tonight?
But the world is beautiful, worth fighting for
Only have one thing on our mind
    Facing the fate, holy war
Singing Hallelujah to save our majesty
    We are the metal warriors
    Fighting the darkness for brothers
    Shining blade and burning heart
Into the Gates of Hell we march
Immortal soul, let there be light
    Into the Eye of Heaven
    Eagles at a holy war
    Fly higher than the sun

What do we live for? What do we fight for, tonight?

The white dresses serve another purpose: So they can be SEEN. When you go to other metal shows, since everyone wears black or dark clothing, if LoveBites did that, they'd get lost and drowned out by the stage! by wearing white, they stand out and can be seen. Miyako is the tallest in the band, at 5'2", while Haruna is 4'9"! So wearing white makes them stand out so they can be seen on stage.

actually the difference in the way the 2 guitarists present themselves is quite intentional. midori on your left is the extrovert and is fiery and flashy. as well as an amazing guitarist - and miyako on your right is the more laid back contemplative genius that writes most of their music. and a world class pianist as well - seeing as you asked. she plays in 4 or 5 of their lives

Having the ability to play multi instruments, a musical literacy to write and arrange epic compositions, and a musical upbringing of the classical genre, Miyako is an eccentric. Musicians of this quality is usually a mismatch between their internal music dynamics and their stage presence. For instance Joe Satriani or Steve Vai move insignificantly based on their total stage presence. What more if it was either the two guitarist extraordinaire, Al Dimeola or Pat Metheny who are acclaimed music writers and guitar players. The latter is even worse. Draw a circle where he stands, and that will be his position for the whole hour or so live performance. In my opinion, Miyako is akin to a music conductor for this band. While playing the guitar, she is listening, metering the dynamics or flow of the composition and will move in if damage control is required, but damn Lovebites is near flawless and that makes it all the more reassuring for her. I have seen her other performances, no doubt she grooves and kind of cheerful a little especially at the closing, but that's it. Perhaps its not in her demeanor to move happily at stage performances. Relatively it all depends on the musical intellect and corresponding perceptive requirements of the viewer. Anyway its just my two cents worth sharing on this issue. Only my opinion.

@@thedocofrock1890 Yes i noticed that in the 2019 live concert and i smile in amusement thinking that this nerd is grooving because that's her natural musical response. Her brains might not want to but the body needs to. . But that said, this is a very special lady with the musical dimensions and potential, inventoried above her shoulders. And to add to her prowess she is very discerning about the design of the sounds for her compositions. And to prescribe guitar specifications with guitar makers agreeing for customization, and with an impending release of a guitar modeled after her name, if i am not mistaken, all this is testament of a future legend in the making.

LMAO...DB is a great band BUT this is Lovebites and you just experienced a song that doesn't even make the top 10 of their 50+ songs. Power, Speed. Thrash, Rock, Prog Ballads and even classical piano (yes classical piano and metal). No one is more in sync and plays as flawlessly LIVE as this band. The M & M duo put on a guitar clinic in very song, the drummer makes the Energizer Bunny look anemic, the vocalist never sang metal till she joined this band. Want to test the pledge that you will never be disappointed by this band then play Set the World on Fire LIVE (czcams.com/video/99zsH6iG_6c/video.html) and tell me that you aren't stunned totally. Petite models (only Miyako breaks the 5' barrier and she is the classical trained pianist since age 3, wait till you hear her on the keys) who wear white dresses and high heels (they play in them) who are Metal Goddesses on stage. Best new metal band 2018 according to Hammer and 1st all female metal band to play Wacken Open Air (Mecca of Metal with 100+ metal bands from around the world) in 2018. When you know how many great all female bands their are in Japan that tells you all you need to know. They have taken all the glory of 80's metal (Maiden, Slayer, Priest, Metallica, etc..) and blended them with some masters influences and raised them to a whole new level. They often switch between influences within the same song and LIVE they are a force to be dealt with. Only started as a band in 2017 and yet are one of the tightest and most in sync group especially playing LIVE. They are in constant pursuit of FLAWLESS PERFECTION in everything that this band does. Lovebites like many of the great female bands Mary's Blood, Nemophla, Aldious, Fate Gear, Band Maid (more rock) etc... many from the great Destrose band tree and all thanks to the great Show-Ya tearing the doors off the Boy's Club in the late 80's.

Also, Japanese has a VERY limited vocabulary. They have very few sounds and the speak is strictly divided into syllables that all consists of a consonant and a vowel. Therefor Japanese cannot really say Lovebites, it probably become something like Lo-vo-bai-to, or something similar. Therefore it is VERY hard for grown up Japanese people to talk English at all. The brain works thus with language - when you are young you have a potential for all sounds. But, when you grow up you optimize that so that sounds no one says is removed and the sounds everyone uses is honed. Eventually you will have the typical set of sounds, and if you move elsewhere on the planet you will have a strong accent., that maybe is never fully removed.
On the other hand, it is easier to sing than speak in a foreign language. For some weird reason.

haha ... "I expect to not like this band" ... ... (drums/base and guitars starts chugging) ... "oh?! ... drummer is crazy" ... "singer is actually good" ... Miyako & Midory make their magic .... "dude! ... this is pretty good" ..... "that was great .... I will definitely come back and listen to more from this band". It was slow going and you made good resistance ... but they got you over there :)

Haruna, Asami, Miho, Midori, Miyako These girls play whatever they put on them. Power, speed, trash metal, classic rock, hard rock, even some hooligan glam style song, I've heard them. As you listen to them, you will realize how good they are. Miyako is a genius. In my opinion the best band of Japan

I agree. Both some sub genre of metal, and both have at least one female. That’s really the only connection. I was expecting some MySpace era metal core with sad emo girl lyrics.

Must be big? LoveBites is arguably the biggest Japanese band outside of Japan. Outside of BABYMETAL, they are the only Japanese band to play the European festival circuit. They are the only Japanese band to play Wacken Open Air. They are the only Japanese band to be signed to a western-world label: Nuclear Blast Records, which is the same label that Nightwish, Sabaton, and Jinjer are on.
LoveBites gets their influences not from Dragonforce, but from the classic 1980s power metal and thrash metal bands: Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Helloween, The Big 4 (Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth). Ever notice how Asami (the singer) sounds like Bruce Dickinson (singer of Iron Maiden)? For some songs, you could take LoveBites out, put in Iron Maiden, and would sound the same. The only difference is that the ladies here do it better, and do it in heels.

THEY ARE NOTHING LIKE DRAGONFORCE! This band has REAL SONGS! You can react any way that you would like, but make sure you get shit right. I HATE these stupid band comparisons that happen because it's sooo easy to do instead of actually listening.

@@BrootallyHonest Usually, Japanese female bands don't screw around. Japanese musical artists are pretty dedicated.
I suppose we're a bit conditioned to be cautious of female bands because there've been so few good ones before; I think that might stem from a mistaken assumption that metal is for guys. I'm glad to see it was wrong to begin with.
