    We replace the broken chuck on this DeWalt DCD796 combi hammer drill. Normal chucks have a set screw down inside the throat to remove the chuck but these type need to be unscrewed from the shaft while it's being held tight. I show you how to do this safely and to avoid damaging your gearbox. Should work with any drill that takes these screw-on type chucks, Makita, Milwaukee, Hitachi, Hikoki, AEG, Bosch etc.
    May also work with DeWalt DCD991, DCD996, DCD771, DCD796, DCD998, or any other model that doesn’t have a set screw.

    DeWalt make it difficult because they want you to buy a new drill. I reckon they are making the Chuck weaker deliberately, the last two dewalt drills I bought had chuck failure within 2 years. The rest of the unit is top notch. Thanks for the vid!

    A few months ago my helper du jior over worked my Dewalt battery drill (didn't really think it was possible). The, I needed a stubby drill with a hole saw for a tight space. I bought a new brushless model. Recently, while helping a friend, he borrowed my drill and an 1-3/8" holesaw. He tried forcing the chuck through the hole. Not a happy ending. I bought a new chuck and now here I am, trying to figure out how to change the darn thing. Thank you sir for this video. I thought I was going crazy trying to make my Torx wrenches fit that little "screw".

    FYI, this chuck and procedure also work on a DCD792. True, going back together is the toughest part, it can take some finagling to line everything back up. Just take your time, and don't force anything! If it doesn't fall into place, something isn't lined up right. That last plastic cover fought me for a bit, had to wiggle it just right and it fell right in. Thanks!

  • @MicheIIePucca

    This method by far is the safest (for the drill) out there. One thing.. you don't need to remove all the case screws.. you can just loosen some on the back side (furthest from the chuck) so that the front part of the case opens enough to remove the two springs (one on each side). The chuck/gear assembly comes right out after that. There are some crazy destructive methods shown on youtube for doing this... even cutting off the chuck with a cutting disk... cripes... tis crazy.

    Excellent Job, and about the only other way is to cut it off, but that is really dicey, and I would only do it on an older nastier drill. Your drill here is in like new condition. DeWalt should be ashamed on this whole drill chuck issue, but it looks like newer drills have improved, at least in the case of runout issues. Put a Rohm chuck on it next time! Peace! 👍

    Today I was reaming a metal plate with a 10mm bit and I over tightened the chuck which subsequently jammed. Ended up deforming the chuck and now it turns is roughly. That metal case is delicate.
    I get what you're saying but also think maybe they thought as you made the point of it's to protect the gear box, this method negates the risk....or maybe it was cheaper and led to planned obsolescence.

    My model 790 DID have a reverse thread screw I discovered after following your video here. The adjustable wrench in the vice trick did not work for me because of two reasons. One of the jaws from the chuck was missing and the adjustable wrench could not hold the shaft without being forced out. In the process I lost a tiny gear and all the parts are sitting useless in a box now. I think this process may be wrong for the model 790. Now I have a new chuck ordered and nothing to put it on.

    This method works.
    However, you need to apply huge amount of force and you can snap the axel.
    Since you already tear it apart, you could've taken the chuck out with the axel.
    Then apply heat on it to unscrew it easily.
    I don't know witch chucks DeWalt uses, but they are meh.
    When doing all this work, try to find the chuck from a German company Röhm GMBH.
    Those are amazing and much better than standard DeWalt

    Most excellent video ! This was the first one showing dealing with the pin arrangement on the shaft. I have a corded drill DW210G Style 2. It came with a keyed chuck and a *useless* holder (lost the key - had to order another one) and was looking around when I found you, for how to replace the keyed chuck with a keyless version. I'm guessing for ease of manufacture, this one appears to be much more straightforward for disassembly - only four Torx bolts easily accessible around the outside - I'm hopeful I will not need to split the body halves. Again, many thanks.

      @@TheBasementChannel So I have another challenge, perhaps on which you could comment. I note your shaft has two flats, which is orders of magnitude easier to grasp - with your "crescent wrench" as we say in the US. The shaft on mine is round and greasy, and no setting of a Vise Grip prevents the shaft from spinning. Would you suggest I take a Dremel and file two flats on the shaft ? Another suggestion ? I have the replacement chuck in hand, and pretty clear it attaches exactly the same as shown in your video. Fortunately the gear box is much more straightforward on the DWD210G - four Torx T-25 bolts to separate from the motor, then three T-20 screws to expose the two gears. And I dare say, my replacement chuck appears to be identical to yours, with the same slots on the bottom.

    • @TheBasementChannel
      @TheBasementChannel  Před 2 lety

      Sorry bud I’ve not seen any brake mechanism while dismantling. It’s probably inside the motor housing or it’s the motor itself doing the braking.

      I just installed a new chuck on my DCD791 after watching this video. I ended up with the gear box all apart. It was a little tricky getting it all back together correctly. So I would recommend taking lots of photos as you take it apart.
      At the bottom of the gear assembly near the motor there are 5 short cindrical pins in a ring assembly that looks like kind of a SPRAG CLUTCH and brake to me. Perhaps taking out those 5 pins would disable the brakes. But it also might disable the drive too.

      @@buckboard43 thanks. How did u remove the chuck? I think there are many methods and they are not easy. Btw i think my new dcd791 has very small chuck wobble idk if its normal or not and i am not sure if replacing the chuck would solve this problem. Why did u changed yours

      @@AsBi1 I used the method described in this video to remove the chuck. However as I said in my previous comment, he does not go into the reassembly of the gearbox very much. Mine came all apart and it was quite a job getting it all back together properly. So I strongly advise taking many photos as you take it apart so you have those for reference to know how to fit all of the pieces back together properly. Also work at a table with nothing else around so that you can find the small pieces when they get lost.
      My drill is a couple of years old and the original chuck was not working well any more. It would not hold a bit well and it also got stuck so it was difficult to remove the bit. That is why I replaced it.

    Hmm.. hear me out. I was a mechanic for 7 years. In the last year I got w new job basically construction. And now that I'm not buying snap on or Mac tools lol.. I didn't know if I should go with Milwaukee or DeWalt. Long story short I went with DeWalt considering everyone I work with has DeWalt and I grew up with my dad always using DeWalt. Now idk if I regret buying DeWalt... Help me out please. Is DeWalt actually a good quality tool or people are just obsessed and biased when it comes to tools because I recently bought a dewalt 20v brushless atomic series drill. I used it like a handful of times didn't drop it once.. now on speed 1 it's okay on speed 2 it makes a weird almost grinding sound and when it has any bit of resistance it sounds like it spins internally.. obviously something is broken inside. Is it just bad luck? Or should I start just buying Milwaukee tools.

    • @TheBasementChannel
      @TheBasementChannel  Před 2 lety

      It’s a tough choice, but my opinion is pretty much all tools are the same nowadays. Everything is built down to a price unless you go for something high end like Hilti. Basically you are buying into a battery system, and then you’re just buying and replacing the skins. Take care of your batteries, that’s where the value lies. As for your drill, yeah sounds broken, I have one doing the same thing. They have a plastic to metal dog clutch. The plastic splines round off and the metal splines jump the grooves. Mine only did it after years of abuse, so perhaps there’s a manufacturing fault with yours. I’d take it in for a warranty replacement.

So if it's just a freak thing then I understand shit happens lol. I honestly do love DeWalt and I have a secret love for Milwaukee but I never had Milwaukee so I don't have a opinion on them. Maybe one day I'll see but once you start buying a certain brand, for me it's hard to switch because I already spent money on 5 DeWalt tools and batteries and there is no point in buying all the same tools again just in a different color I guess you could say lol.

    The sole reason Dewalt didnt put the standard screw in that chuck to easily replace it, is because they simply dont want you to replace it.. They would rather you bought either a new drill or the complete assembley including the chuck.. Oh and to boot, there new models like this one and the 796 have the worst chuck housings ive ever witnessed in a drill.. All wobbly, terribly out of balance.. The bearing sleeves were a crude afterthought.. No matter what chuck you throw on one of these drills, There strictly rough work drills, not an ounce of precission between any of the models.. I have 2 ogf them and from brand new, both wobbly as all get out !!!
