  • In this video I show how to remove a drill chuck from the DeWalt DCD797. I wanted to make this video after trying to find a solution to my broken chuck. I looked all over and found nothing that could help me. The most common diy removal method is to remove the chuck's set screw (or not) depending on the model, inserting a large allen wrench into the chuck, hand tight, set the drill in lowest gear, set drill to drill mode, lay on side and hit the allen key with a hammer counter clockwise to remove the chuck. I did try this method however after banging on the allen for about 20 mins I decided to just remove the chuck. I got the idea from a youtube video of someone disassembling a dewalt drill. In the video the shaft that holds the chuck just slides right out of the gear housing. I thought why not just remove the chuck in the same manor however instead of breaking down the drill just pull the chuck straight out...and it worked!

Repair to a DeWALT DCD 771 1/2inch Cordless Drill Driver that chuck continues to loosen when used resulting in drill bit loosening and falling out. Ordered online a replacement chuck after a few attempts to remedy the chuck not holding tightly. Drill chucks are critical to the operation of the tool and ours is bent all out of whack so we're going to replace it! However, in order to do that we'll have to get the old chuck off of the tool and that ends up being a bit of a difficult operation. Lets see what we can do! There's nothing more annoying than having to hand-screw something together czcams.com/users/postUgkx1McjgiqTNcTjrhvRvJWcrk5bzTeQW-Wn except for the pain in your wrist that is. This addition to my tool kit is great and I can get a lot done without all the pain and annoyance. The battery last's a long time and I have yet to run out of power when doing a small project (granted I am saying small project because I'm no construction worker). The only thing that I wish it had was an LED or pair of LEDs to indicate when it was charging and whether or not the charge was complete (or full).

Absolute perfect and easy to follow video. Just saved me from buying a new drill. Did it in ten mins. I couldn’t insert the Allan key as the chuck was totally broken and would not hold anything. I held it as tight as possible in a vice and cracked open the shaft with a spanner. Hey presto it came off easily. Thank you for uploading 🫡

Although I was sceptical this method worked extremely well for me the chuck prised off very easily without any damage to the surrounding housing -maybe I was lucky for once-. The method for removing the chuck from the spindle also worked well I used an old Vileda mop metal handle cut in half for extra leverage on the allen key and Spanner which I thought would split due to the thinness of the tubular steel used in its construction but didn't. Excellent Instructions thank you very much.

It may be possible to spin the chuck as it's being lifted up to get it on all sides. The other fault with these exact drills is they get stuck on hammer action the internals on these are so cheap nowadays.

I know it's pretty frustrating. Silver lining I got a 7 piece kit with hard box on wheels for $499 around 4 years ago and it paid for itself many times over. Thanks for watching.

Watch this video, it shows what you need to do to fix hammer only mode.

Actually after looking at most of the videos here on CZcams regarding removal of chuck on these DCD drills, your doing it wrong, the way your doing it, it removes the stem which you do not want to remove, it’s done exactly the same way as they chucks with the set screw, if no set screw just simply tighten with a large Allen wrench and hit with a hammer, once loose just unscrew and screw on new chuck

Why don't you want to remove the stem?

@@DoItWithDave if your only replacing the chuck, the. Chuck is the only thing that should be separated from the drill itself and when your buying a replacement chuck you will only get a chuck, no stem, so basically your doing more work than needed. Peace

@@johnjkizer6399 okay I understand now. Simply removing the chuck with Allen key and hammer is definitely the best way to go about it. I my case I literally spent an hour using the preferred method to no resolve. Even tried a heat gun. I only showed it this way because of that and was hoping to help anyone else that was having the same issue. Thanks for your post. More information definitely helps anyone trying to replace their drill chuck.
