How to Balance: NH3 + O2 = NO + H2O

  • In order to balance NH3 + O2 = NO + H2O you'll need to watch out for two things. Visit www.Breslyn.org for video guides on balancing equations and more!
    First, be sure to count all of N, H, and O atoms on each side of the chemical equation. Once you know how many of each type of atom you have you can only change the coefficients (the numbers in front of atoms or compounds) in order to balance the equation.
    Be careful when counting the Oxygen atoms on the product side of the equation. Don't forget the H2O on the product side of the chemical equation!

    WOW! Thank you for making this video. I did not know that you can use fractions to help you get whole numbers by multiplying the bottom number to all of them -it makes total sense. It's so hard to balance when they're odd numbers.

    But is there a generalised technique to do this? I mean if I can bring those co-efficients to form some sort of equation and solve it to get the actual number of atoms that would be really helpful cause this method is somewhat a trial and error type, may create problems in the exam hall

    • @wbreslyn
      @wbreslyn  Před 5 lety

      There is an algebraic method to balancing equations (socratic.org/questions/how-to-balance-chemical-equations-using-algebraic-method). But most of the time I'll use trial and error and if I can't get it use another method (maybe algebraic but usually an online balancing app although you won't have that for an exam). --- Dr. B
