Thanks for the vid. A few comments if you don't mind. The '18 959 I have is a beaut! IMO she has much finer lines than the V2. The fuel gauge issue is nothing. When you're down to your last 1.25 gallons the bike starts counting "trip" miles, and if you ride it hard, you've got about 25 miles until fumes, lol (I did run out once but managed to coast down the hill for just under a mile, right into a fuel station, so no biggie). You didn't mention the "Lap"timer. I have a local street track some friends and I ride. The lap timer is great for "friendly" competition. Records 30 laps, including time, max RPM and max speed! Dude, I get your criticism over the fuel gauge. Totally valid. However, brake and clutch reservoirs have been made like that for years, even for top-level racing bikes. Yes, I raced for 12 years.
The fact that they’ve been made like that for years is more reason for a change. After all, Ducati sells better looking ones. They’re just cheaping out

Hi just a note to say I changed the cluch slave cylinder on my 899 to an oberon unit made a huge difference now it is very light and alot better than the standard one
Annoying things I learned about mine: - No fuel gauge. - The low-fuel indicator comes on when the tank is like half full lol - There's still a little slop in the throttle - The storage compartment is comically small-- it's literally _barely_ enough to fit your insurance cards in. On the other hand, I live in Phoenix, AZ (one of the hottest places in the US and indeed most of the rest of the world) and I don't think the heat thing is THAT big of an issue. It is hot, but as long as you have some forward movement to get the air flowing, it's totally doable. Traffic is a little rough though.
The TMF channel is always succinct and follows a time tested format. Entertaining yes, but more importantly, honesty is TMF’s trademark. That dear friends is why I’m a huge fan. Merry Christmas Andy and Family, from a guy across the ocean. 👍🏼 😎 🇺🇸 🌎
I completely agree about the V2 sounding better than the V4 ,IMO the V4 sounds like a muted 1299 but the thing I find amazing is that the V4 is lighter than the V2.
As a premium bike owner (2019 BMW K1600B) and 50+ years of riding I am surprised at the level of faults you found with the V2. Ducati is the most expensive bike here in Canada. I would expect more! The heat issue, wobbly mirrors and cheap oil reservoirs would be a deal breaker for me.
Před 3 lety+1
The oil reservars aren't cheap that's how oil reservars of expensive brake and clutch cylinders always look.
Since the roasted gonad issue has been around long enough for them to produce the heat shield, why on earth do they not fit it during production? Another great summary of a brilliant bike (except the hole above the rear tyre of course!)
Awesome videos. Love watching your thorough and practical viewpoints. On a side note, at first glance, it feels like Bruce Willis is giving me a Panigale review..haha..super!
I have a 899 and think its the best of the bunch I've done the usual throttle bit and the heat sheets and termi exhaust, I do like the single sided swing arm but hey can't have everything
I also have a 899 and love it, I'd possibly update in a couple of years but the mirrors are a deal breaker for me, I have to have folding mirrors to access my secure storage and would not entertain the idea of either no mirrors or aftermarket mirrors. There was also one of these at my local dealer with a snapped mirror in the showroom before it'd even touched the tarmac!!
I have had my 899 six years now from new, it’s got 26,000 miles on it and I still love every ride on it 😍 Not tempted at all by the V2, suspension and brakes are the same as mine and it only makes a couple of horsepower more, but I think it’s electronically limited in the first 3 gears to ease the torque delivery 🤔 What is it with people and fuel gauges?? I’ve had over 30 bikes and only one of them has ever had a fuel gauge, get over it people 🤷🏻♂️ just reset the tripmeter and your good to go, simple.....unless you’re American 🙄! And don’t forget,...if Ducati fitted the bike with a fuel gauge, you’ll also get less petrol in the tank! Still think the original Panigale’s are the best looking ones, they look slimmer and have far better proportions and don’t forget, the 899 was voted 2014 bike of the year in numerous countries and magazine reviews, it made that much impression when it first came out , don’t believe me?? Just watch this 899 vs 1199 comparison review 👍 czcams.com/video/8cJ2d5YO7m4/video.html
@@mikemcgovern3372 If I’d wrapped the bike in cotton wool and left it in the garage so it only had 6,000 miles on, it might have turned into an investment, but I’m one of those weird people who have actually ridden it and it’s got 26,000 miles on . But to me, that’s an investment in itself, not monetarily but for the great memories it’s given me,...the places I’ve been on it, all the fun and laughs with my mates, that’s worth far more to me than an extra few quid in the bank🤷🏻♂️. I can never understand these people who buy bikes like this then don’t ride them, totally defeats the object of owning one in the first place?
Poucher Col I was talking about the 899 generally, not your bike specifically. If you've only got 1 bike then I agree, it should be ridden. But as a second or third bike for sunny Sundays, kicks for free.
@@mikemcgovern3372 Hi Mike, I actually do have 3 bikes, just bought a new Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX this year as well, lovely easy to live with sports tourer, despite two lockdowns here in the UK somehow I’ve still managed to get over 6,000 miles on it this year!🤷🏻♂️ I’ve decided from now on, that the Ninja is the workhorse and the Ducati will be the show pony , it deserves a bit of a rest 😬👍
Any internal combustion engine will pump out around 1.5 times in heat energy as what it produces as mechanical energy. With one HP being 736 Watts that gives us 1104 Watts of heat per horsepower of mechanical energy. A 100 HP bike will be giving out the heat equivalent of 110 one-bar electric room heaters. Small wonder that we can get hot on a bike.
@@TheMissendenFlyer Optimal efficiency for an internal combustion engine is 40%, (because they operate on the Carnot Cycle) meaning that 40% of thermal energy is converted to mechanical energy. That leaves 60% of heat energy remaining as heat, and that has to go somewhere. 40 X 1.5 = 60, so that is why you get 1.5 times as much heat energy as you get mechanical energy. 'Internal Combustion Engines' by Lichty is a great read if you want to get seriously nerdy about them. As a pilot you might like to know that a turbine is only about 25% mechanically efficient, so you get three times as much heat as you get mechanical energy.
Regarding the mirrors. Had the mirrors on my Supersport S replaced under a recall & don't get any blurred views now. Hopefully Ducati will do the same with the V2. Agree with the cheap plastic set up for brake reservoir, love the set up on your panigale👍
I have an 1199s. I test rode a V2 before that. I does get very hot, to the point where you have open your legs or move around a bit. It is uncomfortable. Top end is nice but not epic. Either get a 2nd hand 12 or 1199s but if new to superbikes can't go wrong with a V2
Always fancied a Ducati sports bike and nearly had a 916 back in the day until I asked about servicing costs....HOWWWW MUCHHHHH! so ended up with a Fireblade instead. Unfortunately I'm getting on a bit now so the fact that I can only safely get away with/afford 1 bike means sadly it'll be one box I will never be able to tick.
Thanks for another great video. I loved the brake reservoir banging against the faring on a $21,000 bike. Matches my personal experience owning a Ducati: beautiful design, superior performance, lackadaisical engineering, abysmal reliability. After 45 years of riding and a dozen bikes, that Ducati was the only one to strand me. Luckily I wised up and sold it.
If you ever needed to add a bit of content you could add a minute at the end of your videos occasionally along the lines of "what's new in my garage" . Every time I get a glimpse I want to see more.
Stunning Bike TMF, you don't see many of them here in Canada due to the lack of dealerships. I have an Aprilia Mana 850 the one with the CVT transmission, bought it for the wife to learn to ride but alas she dropped it in the parking lot and never got back on it. But it is a rare bike for around here. Have a great XMAS hopefully 2021 is better for all of us!!!!!
Excellent summary Mr. Flyer. Your opinions mirror mine very closely on my ‘18 V4S. Great minds etc. I’d add the auto turn cancelling for mine as a “like”. Does the V2 have this? And the no fuel gauge in this century, being very kind to simply call this odd. Perhaps the turn signal canceling is not so useful in your land of roundabouts but here in San Diego it is quite nice. And with the summer heat here in SoCal, I just put a couple of eggs in my pocket and by the time I’m home they’re boiled, along with my fiddly bits, handy for a lunch break.
Awesome review mate, quick one I’m due to take delivery next week on the V2 really looking forward to it. I’m trading my 2018 fire-blade SP, I’ve always had litre bikes had a 1100 Tuono prior to the blade. I can’t help feel like I’m going to be slightly underwhelmed with the power. I’m not one for chasing 200bhp but my blade makes 189bhp. In the real world am I likely to notice the 30bhp difference? Also how was the bike over all, and issues with stalling etc? I’ve never owned a Ducati/ridden a twin. Would you suggest I invest in a decent trickle charger and leave it on when not using? Thanks Leon.
I use trickle chargers due the trackers I have that tend to flatten batteries when left. I’m sure the v2 will have enough power for you - a completely different ride to the ‘Blade!! Enjoy…
This is THE perfect bike.. if it had folding mirrors and a fuel gauge. Would love to buy this in the future, just sitting on the supersport.... I felt like an absolute wonder woman! When is the V4 or V4S first ride?
The Panigale V2 is a missile, therefore it does not have many moving external parts, it gets hot and its angle of rotation is not very steep. There are other missiles, but those are not the ones you want.
I'm not entirely sure I follow what you mean by "does not have many moving external parts" but I agree this is a bike you want! Thanks for watching and for stopping by!
Nice vid as ever & a lovely bike. Although leaning towards the Supersport as it feels a bit more well rounded & useable for road riding. Also interested to see what the V2 Street fighter's like. Could be the perfect road going naked.
@@TheMissendenFlyer I have indeed. Credible sources such as MCN which supposedly came from the Ducati boss. The V2 Streetfighter info came out soon after the V2 launch so was mostly overshadowed.
No fuel gauge so you can set your trip distance? Would that work? as a more spirited ride would use much more fuel . Great review of a stunning motorcycle. Got to say your 899 is the better looking of the two tho .
Turning circle. I'm not a motorcycle engineer. Very generally, it does seem to me that bikes that handle well going around fast sweeping bends also have poor turning circles. Bikes with good turning circles also feel a bit twitchy on faster bends.
As a 48 yr old cyclist with some Moto riding experince would you recommend this as a first real bike? Been many years since I’ve ridden. Also was looking into a used 848 really used to want one of those. Any thoughts or suggestions? I’m in NYC . Thanks! Great thoughtful review
Funny...I just bought an 899 because I preferred the styling over the V2. I suppose it would be perfect if it was 1) Single sided swing arm and 2) the heat issue was resolved. I just see fish gills when I look at the V2. I just can not unsee it. I felt the Euro5 exhaust made the V2 look worse than the double sided swing arm on the 899. Those are the styling compromises I saw.
It slightly worries me that I agree with you on most points of your likes/dislikes...and not just the Ducati V2 but a large range of bikes. I just see us sitting down at some kafe going, "I know...I know.." like a couple of old men. See... told you I was worried. 😂😂
My MV dragster has the fluid reservoirs in front of the handlebars not on top. Looks nicer. So many people replace with red ones and really look funny as look like ears.
It is a sharp looking bike for sure. But I think between the price tag, service costs, insurance.... there are a lot of other bikes that do the same for less $$.... but if I won the lotto... I'd have one.
re 5:15 . I can't see much difference between the 2 bikes . They're both very beautiful, shiny and bright RED. I like them both. Am I interested in one, would I like one ? Definitely yes. Will my back, neck, wrists and bank balance be able to handle one ? Unfortunately No.
Both beautiful bikes. I think I prefer the old one from the front and the new one side on. When you see these bikes, it makes you wonder how Ducati could have turned out something as ugly as the V4 Streetfighter!
Ducati seem to be more and more selling of the back of the "brand image" and for me, just too many compromises in quality parts for the money. (It does look stunning in the white and red livery edition though).
Well you only see the good bits of course - I have a great life and I'm not complaining but everyone, including me, has issues to deal with. In a nutshell a plan and hard graft is what got me to this point....
I live in Phoenix, AZ and it's perfectly rideable even in the midst of summer. Not saying it's not hot, just that it's not so hot that you can't ride it even in 100+ degree heat.

The only thing I didn’t like about the baby panigale was the lack of a single sided swing arm so I’m glad to see it back on this bike
Yes a great addition that....
People have asked me about the barrier.
I see what you were doin there😉
There are two doors on that garage. The naughty boys may be naughty, but they're not daft.
@@BobberRider yeah I saw that. I assume has that one bolted shut
Annoying things I learned about mine:
- No fuel gauge.
- The low-fuel indicator comes on when the tank is like half full lol
- There's still a little slop in the throttle
- The storage compartment is comically small-- it's literally _barely_ enough to fit your insurance cards in.
Thanks for the feedback Brett! ....and stay cool!

I completely agree about the V2 sounding better than the V4 ,IMO the V4 sounds like a muted 1299 but the thing I find amazing is that the V4 is lighter than the V2.
Yes clever how they've done that.....
The oil reservars aren't cheap that's how oil reservars of expensive brake and clutch cylinders always look.
Your age is the real deal breaker for you , do not lie to us!
@@MotorcyclesForMatures With my experience and skill I could out ride you any day.

Incredibly useful info, thank you! A beautiful bike for sure!
Thanks for watching!
I agree about the fuel gauge, my honda hornet doesn't have one and it makes me abit paranoid.
Crazy isn't it....
V2 is probably the best sport bike for the street.
Depends. I test ride my friends v2. And holy s**t its hot under the seat. For me rs660 is more than enough because of the power and torque.
Since the roasted gonad issue has been around long enough for them to produce the heat shield, why on earth do they not fit it during production? Another great summary of a brilliant bike (except the hole above the rear tyre of course!)
Yes good point - beats me!
Great video.. as always 👍
Thanks for the visit
Totally agree with you on all the negatives and positives! You nailed it TMF! Good stuff! Love my V2!!
Glad we concur Jason!
Awesome videos. Love watching your thorough and practical viewpoints. On a side note, at first glance, it feels like Bruce Willis is giving me a Panigale review..haha..super!
Works for me!
The giveaway is Brue Willis doesn't hold the script in his hands.
I have a 899 and think its the best of the bunch I've done the usual throttle bit and the heat sheets and termi exhaust, I do like the single sided swing arm but hey can't have everything
I'm in complete agreement of course!
Stunning bike and great review!
Thank you kindly!
truly my dreambike. Good informative video. thanks and stay safe.
Not good is it!
I have had my 899 six years now from new, it’s got 26,000 miles on it and I still love every ride on it 😍
Not tempted at all by the V2, suspension and brakes are the same as mine and it only makes a couple of horsepower more, but I think it’s electronically limited in the first 3 gears to ease the torque delivery 🤔
What is it with people and fuel gauges??
Just watch this 899 vs 1199 comparison review 👍
czcams.com/video/8cJ2d5YO7m4/video.html
Given the short production run, popularity and consistently high second hand values, it's an investment 👍
@@mikemcgovern3372 Hi Mike, I actually do have 3 bikes, just bought a new Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX this year as well, lovely easy to live with sports tourer, despite two lockdowns here in the UK somehow I’ve still managed to get over 6,000 miles on it this year!🤷🏻♂️
I’ve decided from now on, that the Ninja is the workhorse and the Ducati will be the show pony , it deserves a bit of a rest 😬👍
Poucher Col at 26k, a well earned rest. Sold my 899 last year and miss it every day. Still, the Hypermotard is some consolation 😉
By jingo is that right?? Crikey....
Cheers Mike - I assume you could do that in the Supersport???
@@TheMissendenFlyer planning to do the upgrade over winter, wasn't sure of what colour but having seen your set up, defo red.😁
Get a "Cool Cover "for the seat keeps your nethers cool.
Actually I have one - but this needs something more....
I have an 1199s. I test rode a V2 before that. I does get very hot, to the point where you have open your legs or move around a bit. It is uncomfortable. Top end is nice but not epic. Either get a 2nd hand 12 or 1199s but if new to superbikes can't go wrong with a V2
My panigale is a total NUT toaster... thanks for the heat shield tip
Yes, they do run a little warm don’t they!
I just see a v2s Bayliss edition today and it really is a good looking bike, unfortunately they are a limited run and almost all sold pre order
Mine has never let me down......
What model was that?

If you ever needed to add a bit of content you could add a minute at the end of your videos occasionally along the lines of "what's new in my garage" . Every time I get a glimpse I want to see more.
He he, I'm not sure it would be as interesting as you imagine!
Once again, thanks for a great in-depth and balanced review :-)
My pleasure!
Amen to that!
Really tempted to trade in my 20 plate gixxer 1000r, just not sure if I'd miss the power even though I rarely get the chance to use it all
I think the Pani has more than enough power to keep you entertained 😉
Liking your positive attitude Garey!
Great and honest review.......stay safe......thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Quality bike, I’m in your camp fuel gauges on bikes how hard can it be. Wouldn’t put me off having one though 😂
Thanks
Leon.
Just over a year ago czcams.com/video/jvvo8b05qbM/video.html
Definately prefer the older panigale👍🏽
The Panigale V2 is a missile, therefore it does not have many moving external parts, it gets hot and its angle of rotation is not very steep. There are other missiles, but those are not the ones you want.
I'm not entirely sure I follow what you mean by "does not have many moving external parts" but I agree this is a bike you want! Thanks for watching and for stopping by!
Nice vid as ever & a lovely bike. Although leaning towards the Supersport as it feels a bit more well rounded & useable for road riding. Also interested to see what the V2 Street fighter's like. Could be the perfect road going naked.
If indeed such a beast is coming...I'd love a V2 StreetFighter but not heard any credible rumours have you??
@@TheMissendenFlyer I have indeed. Credible sources such as MCN which supposedly came from the Ducati boss. The V2 Streetfighter info came out soon after the V2 launch so was mostly overshadowed.
No fuel gauge so you can set your trip distance? Would that work? as a more spirited ride would use much more fuel . Great review of a stunning motorcycle. Got to say your 899 is the better looking of the two tho .
Glad we concur!
Turning circle. I'm not a motorcycle engineer. Very generally, it does seem to me that bikes that handle well going around fast sweeping bends also have poor turning circles.
Bikes with good turning circles also feel a bit twitchy on faster bends.
Funny that!
As a 48 yr old cyclist with some Moto riding experince would you recommend this as a first real bike? Been many years since I’ve ridden. Also was looking into a used 848 really used to want one of those. Any thoughts or suggestions? I’m in NYC . Thanks! Great thoughtful review
Absolutely not - I couldn’t recommend this to a new rider - sorry about that!
Hi on your video at the end the security bar in your garage I have never seen this would like details thx
Check the links in the description below - image 4 security
It slightly worries me that I agree with you on most points of your likes/dislikes...and not just the Ducati V2 but a large range of bikes. I just see us sitting down at some kafe going, "I know...I know.." like a couple of old men. See... told you I was worried. 😂😂
I'm glad we concur - means I must be making some sort of sense....
My MV dragster has the fluid reservoirs in front of the handlebars not on top. Looks nicer. So many people replace with red ones and really look funny as look like ears.
Have you reviewed a Ducati Multistrada as yet? It would be awesome to see a comparison between that and the BMW S1000XR and perhaps the triumph tiger.
Yep - on several occasions!
It is a sharp looking bike for sure. But I think between the price tag, service costs, insurance.... there are a lot of other bikes that do the same for less $$.... but if I won the lotto... I'd have one.
Beautiful Review👍
Thank you 👍
great review, do you think you can reduce the heat under the seat a bit more with a double layer of heat protection?
I'm not sure it would fit - that heat shield is quite thick....
Would you consider adding an after market up and down quick shifter? Maybe add one to your bike and do a video?
You mean for my 899 (which already has an upshift)....does one exist? If so then yes I would!
re 5:15 . I can't see much difference between the 2 bikes .
They're both very beautiful, shiny and bright RED. I like them both.
Am I interested in one, would I like one ? Definitely yes.
Will my back, neck, wrists and bank balance be able to handle one ? Unfortunately No.
Fair enough!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Yeah, if only I was richer and younger , sigh !
Is this a good bike for someone who has ridden for a few months ?
No
Both beautiful bikes. I think I prefer the old one from the front and the new one side on. When you see these bikes, it makes you wonder how Ducati could have turned out something as ugly as the V4 Streetfighter!
True - but have you seen the Streetfighter in the flesh? Actually beautifully made (but agreed not as nice as the Pani)...
Didn’t realise you owed an 899 TMF.......you should have said! 👀🤪
Cheeky....
Ducati seem to be more and more selling of the back of the "brand image" and for me, just too many compromises in quality parts for the money. (It does look stunning in the white and red livery edition though).
The Audi bean counters at work, I suspect...
What compromises? It's one of the best bikes they've ever released for this class.
Would love to know your occupation history. Seems like you have a great life and good for you.
Well you only see the good bits of course - I have a great life and I'm not complaining but everyone, including me, has issues to deal with. In a nutshell a plan and hard graft is what got me to this point....
@@TheMissendenFlyer a good attitude and hard work pays dividends in the end.
Those mirrors are shocking. Nasty.

nice looking bike but has to be in red! good video, well done

I agree with you, Ian. I've seen the white one in person, and it doesn't look as good as the red one.
On the auto downshift, any tips? does it work better at certain RPMs or gears? thanks
Not really, just need to be slowing down!
My like took the count to 998 !!! YAAAAS !!!
Nice!
I think the heat issue would stop me buying this bike... I had a Fireblade with high pipes and that was unbearable
Depends where you live of course, on a crisp winters day here in Blighty it’s actually rather nice, height of summer....not so much.
I live in Phoenix, AZ and it's perfectly rideable even in the midst of summer. Not saying it's not hot, just that it's not so hot that you can't ride it even in 100+ degree heat.
