For example, my dad did a 6-month government-funded agricultural research project in a teensy town about a 10 hour drive from where we lived. I did however disagree with the marking as many of the assignments were essays with a word limit of 300-500 on complex subjects, then marks were taken off for “not going in depth enough”. There is only so much depth one can provide while abiding by essay format, word limit, and writing about such a complex issue. Professor Wong was one of my favorite teachers. It's your personality which often determines that. I'm very analytical like he is so i found all of his lectures insightful, whereas someone who's very oriented towards feelings and "the now" will focus on those qualities rather than his rational analytical value. I'm sorry but observing someones body language and how they speak is not a measure of their value in an academic context

    Joseph Wong is conceited. When chairing talks and seminars at U of T that were opened to the public, he kept talking about himself and his achievements and university appointed positions - showing off. A sociologist by training (with a PhD dissertation in healthcare reform in Taiwan), he was appointed by U of T as a prof. of political science. In the aforesaid public talks/seminars he would say he isn't a political scientist even in front of fellow departmental political scientist colleagues.

    Ouch! Well, I think most of the students who visit and comment on the Rate My Professor site are simply in school to get through it. As an adult who returned to college, I visited the site once and only because I had to drop a class due to a very biased instructor. After viewing the site, I realized my opinion of the controlling dictator was correct: she was described as a psychopathic narcissistic instructor, who de-MAND-ed EVERYONE address her as Dr! Ummm, if you are a professor, normally (and in most cases), you have obtained your Ph.D. So, the title “Professor” kind-of establishes your education level in a student’s mind, I would think.

    • @ariaflame-au
      @ariaflame-au Před 4 lety

      Tatsujiro Kurogane actually this is a regional thing. The USA and possibly Canada uses professor for anyone teaching at a tertiary institution (or at least anyone not an adjunct) whereas others places like Australia and where you live only use professor for the people at the top levels.

    • @JustAThought155
      @JustAThought155 Před 4 lety

      Okay, obviously SOME folks are offended by my comment: i.e. an opinion based on MY experience. Therefore, let me overtly explain my stance. The use of the title Dr was NOT my sole objection concerning dropping the class; many factors were involved. Based on the video clip, I simply shared ONE aspect of my experience concerning the site “Rate My Professor.” In addition to this, and concerning the esteemed (and earned) title: Dr; most students honor all of their professors. However, when a professor demands the title be used, the act demonstrates a weakness in THEIR being, IN MY OPINION.
      At the time, I was a student at a community college. I would have been pleased to address most of the associate professors as “Dr.” But to be told to use the address even when simply asking a question in class, instead of saying professor, seems a bit narcissistic. Thus, to better illustrate my point, let me share this. Currently, I attend a highly esteemed learning institution where EVERY professor has earned SERIOUS academic credentials. Hence, each professor I now encounter has earned a RIGHT to be addressed by such a coveted title: Dr. Yet, I have not encountered ONE professor who has demanded their students address them as “Dr.” On the contrary, I have received emails and have conversed with them and they have used their first name to close ALL of the conversations. Therefore, because of their warm personable ability to teach and instruct from a place of security, I will ALWAYS address my current professors as DOCTOR!!! Why? Because they have EARNED such respect due to their ability to treat me, a learner, as one they relate to (or with), rather than condescend. There is a difference in instructing students: showing respect towards the learner GARNERS respect from those who PAY to glean from your professorship.
