  • Should I drop out? Is this all worth it? What am I even gaining out of this?
If these are questions you ask yourself about university, this video is for you.
Get comfy because we're getting personal!
I recently graduated from the University of Toronto with an HBSc in #Neuroscience, Psychology, and Physiology. I was failing terribly when I first started uni, but I somehow managed to graduate early with my name on the Dean's List.
In this video, I talk (very honestly) about my experience at #UofT including how I chose my major, my failures, my actual transcript, and successes. I discuss my res experience including dorms and renting in Toronto. I also reveal the most important things I've learned during my time in #UofTLifeSci, including the study technique that changed my 60s into 90s.

Currently facing said hardships, I really appreciate your input and your outlook and how to grow as a person and how to look past failures or even stops in your path of success.

hi yoobin, thank you so much for making this video!! i found your channel last year while i was deciding on U of T, been a follower since, and now it's my first finals season at U of T. i'm also going through some mental health issues and i think i desperately needed someone who's been through the same life sci journey to tell me that it'll be all okay :) i'm basically in the exactly same situation as you were in first year academically, failing PHY131 and dropping it, taking 3 courses, wanting to do neuro spec -- as i'm sure a ton of other first years also go through. this video was genuinely very helpful (especially the study methods) and inspiring. i didn't think i would find consolation from a youtube video but here we are. i really enjoy watching the content you post & i wish you all the best in grad school!

Thanks for sharing your story. I can 100% relate to yours. I also went to uni after completing IB diploma in high school, and was very shocked from my GPA grades in my first year of uni. I also failed one subject and received ‘pass’ grade for the rest, hence resulted in bad GPA scores. So I tried my best for the second and final year to pull up my GPA grade, but I always thought I was way behind from all smart kids..and had no confidence in what I was studying and doing. In the meantime , I never give up and discover what I want to do in my future (I also decided to study for the master program after one-year of working experience) ! So I want to tell people to never give up and keep going with the passion and your dream!! then things will go well even if you have failed.
Anyway, thanks yoobin for telling your story to us, it really inspires and motivates a lot to me. I never shared about my story to others because I thought it’s very embarrassing. But after listening to your story, I felt it’s not something to be embarrassed anymore. Thank you heaps!! I really love your video!! I always turned your study with me video on my side when I was doing assignments and preparing final papers hehe. Rooting for you :)

haha i’ve been there :( here are some things that worked for me:
BCH210 - i made physical cards with all of the amino acids, color coded etc. and just straight up memorized them. i drew out all of the biochemical pathways (start small and draw out 1 path - eg. krebs cycle - then once you have that in your memory move on to connecting the other pathways to it) - by the time the tests come, you should be able to visualize all the pathways, interconnected in your head. at the end of the course i basically had a hand drawn poster of literally all the pathways we learned about in class, and i could walk though it almost completely by memory… tbh it couldn’t be me anymore but that’s what i did to study
hmb265 - just do all the practice questions in the text book. if you don’t understand something, talk to the prof and go to office hours. this one is more about understanding genetics concepts rather than memorizing.
      good luck!

These are the things that PIs asked me about during interviews, as well as some of my presentation experience (all of which I got through my courses and by presenting my independent research projects to an abstract presentation at a conference). i think it might exist in some courses but i’ve never experienced it in any of mine. the only deflation that may be happening is the instructor changing the level of difficulty of exams to help keep the course average at an “average”. unfortunately i can’t speak about the grading schemes compared to other schools because i’ve only attended uoft.

Uoft I heard is pretty difficult so I heard, but if you got good time management and a good schedule you can do it. But maybe any other university other than uoft. Maybe YorkU i heard it’s not that bad also ryerson it really depends on what you want but uoft is pretty difficult.

Getting good grades in life science subdisciplines is pretty much dictated by how well one 's (short-term) memory is, and how well one can relate physiology/pathology between biological systems/networks.

Class average is not failing...below 1.60 is failing UofT...but I guess you had medical school aspirations. At least covid helped boost your marks. That online learning was clutch.

My daughter just finished her second year life sic u of r this past month. She wants to go to Med school for psychiatrist. Her first year GPA is 3.93. But this second year dropped to 3.88. Hopefully in third year would get get her gpa up. Otherwise she would have problems to get into med school.

WTF. So you took the MINIMUM FULL TIME COURSE LOAD...let's be real here, you grades were class average and NOT failure grades. Blah blah blah, covid hits...your marks jump high...duh, so did everyone's marks in high school and university. Me, cheat online...NO!!!! (crossing my finger). First year is always your best year. Second year is the worst and then you try and reach your first year marks...but for you, it seems covid happened just at the right time. LOL. Wish it happened back in 2007 for me. That online learning could of raised my GPA to a 4.0 instead it's a 3.4. All this time, I was thinking your were about to be put on academic suspension. You did fine girl, you just aren't medical school material but you did really well compared to what most UofT students consider 'bad'.

yeah i really liked the writing style open book tests during covid rather than the multiple choice for memorization. and you’re right, it wasn’t too bad but im just sharing how i overcame what felt like a big setback to me :)
