- Hurricane Idalia slams into the Big Bend area of Florida!
There was a lot of damage around Perry, mostly due to the strong mesovortices that formed within the back edge of the eyewall.
As the hurricane approached, it started to weaken and entrain dry air. The NErn and Nrn eyewalls were very turbulent but very very dry. The lack of falling precip did not allow for maximum winds to be realized. We intercepted the NErn and Nrn eyewall, along with the calm eye NW of Salem, FL and then near the smal town of Athena, FL.
After the small eye, we headed back into Perry where the violently turbulent back edge pulled through.
A few mesovortices were documented by other storm chasers, one of which plowed through our filming location. The tornado-like mesovortice that hits during this back edge was extremely intense and was such a wild ride.
If you're going to ride out a hurricane in the open wind, please be smart about it.
A big shout out to Jason Randolph for experiencing this with me, and Jake Smith, Steven Bergey, and Hunter Fowkes for sending updates and saving radar images throughout the event!
Thanks for watching!! - Věda a technologie
AWESOME footage, Joey! Incredible shots overall and that mesoscale feature was really intense!
Thank you! Omg wasn’t it! We were incredibly lucky it didn’t do anything but scare us lol
Great footage dude! Looked very intense!
So intense for a bit!

Great footage! I wish I could have been there.
No you don't. Trust me.
@@deborahdurhamwhatdoesgodsa5386 I was in Ian last year. I travelled from Pinellas County to Punta Gorda and got in the eye. Rode the whole 8 hour storm in my car which was rocking like a mechanical bull for hours. Most fun I’ve had in years. No I am not a professional storm chaser. Just someone who loves hurricanes. Michael is the one I am furious I missed. Idalia not so much.
Jake, who’s comment thread this is, was down for Michael with me. Talk about an amazing first hurricane for him!
Very sorry ✝️
I think this is fully level 5.
Nice brooo
I’m glad I live in California ✝️🇺🇸
Why? High costs. You had a hurricane and earthquakes in California. You also have lots of tents and homeless people. Poop cakes, needles and drugs on the sidewalks. Great place to live. LOL
Nam myoho rengekyo 🙏 pray 🌍 peace be safe+-/////
Idaiida was a powerful storm went hit Pitt County.
Looks very intense, but even with those pretty crazy looking gusts I don't personally think it was 110kts.
I even find it hard to believe it was anything more than a top-end cat 2 at landfall.
Observations and radar presentation suggest it was much weaker than 110kts at landfall.
Easy to say from wherever you were. I was in the middle in perry fl thru the entire storm. I'm 58 native to this town and the scariest hurricane I've ever been thru. Unless you were here ...stfu
@@barnlife9876 Dude I'm also a florida native and I've been through supposedly "weaker" hurricanes that did way more wind damage to the trees and homes in my area than anything in Perry.
And that's with our way superior building codes!
I was chatting with a storm chaser about it and he said it felt similar to a weakening cat 1 or 2 at landfall.
The winds weren't even sustained either.
Perry airport wind observations didn't even get a 100mph gust.
Just because it was the strongest storm you've ever had doesn't mean anything when Perry hasn't been hit directly by a hurricane, not even a cat 1 in over 100 years.
this was a cat 3 in VERY isolated pockets. Due to a failed EWRC front land interaction dry air entrained I to the eastern side of the storm. The backside had NUMEROUS mesovortices in isolated areas where lack of measurement exists. The amount of coastal damage up the Florida peninsula alone warrants its rating.
@@stammercane2427 Surge damage does not determine intensity and neither do Mesovortices.
@tvold9204 they certainly do for surface obs. The recon measured winds sufficient for cat 3. Dry air choked off much of the convection which did not allow for the cat 3 winds aloft to mix down to the surface. I'm well aware of the saffir Simpson scale and how it works.
Thank you…
You sacrificed your life for this video…
