Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.
The musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles, and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. Now in its 35th record-breaking year, The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, after more than 11,000 performances.

Christina's dress: 50$
Dancer costumes: 400$
Raoul's face: PRICELESS
im a man, a straight man, but if i were christine, after this, i would absolutlely forget about raoul
Gerard Butler is the only man who can have a half melted face and still look handsome.
I love the moment when Chritine sings "consume us"
When the Phantom starts singing "All I ask of You", It breaks my heart. :/
best part: "When will the flames at last CONSUME US?"
Raoul's just like, "What the heck man? That's my girlfriend....."
For me, the phantom has always represented the grief over her father's death. Grief is seductive and easy to fall into. Raoul is the light and a life where she doesn't let her grief consume her. She kisses the phantom, accepts grief, and that is when he/it lets her go. I've related and been inspired by her struggle and how, in the end, she chooses not to let her sorrow overtake her. Though, I can see how her choosing the darkness would be a great story.
I think that the Phantom and Raoul symbolize our lightest and darkest attributes. Both are enticing, and both promise fulfillment be it of light or dark nature. The trouble is that the Phantom, much like our inner darkness, was never taught what love means, so he tries to gain Christine's affection through the means he knows: manipulation, deception, and in the end, he realizes when she gives in to him, he was selfish in how he loved her, so he let her go to Raoul who was promise of goodness.
that old man cracks me up LOL he just screams "NOO!!" like the chandelier is just gonna listen to him and stop falling....xD
I FEEL LIKE CRYING WHEN HE STARTS SINGING ALL I ASK OF YOU
I loove Raoul's expression- "Damn... I've lost. How can I compete with that?!"
I think the slick hair is supposed to be a wig.
I could be wrong
1:41 breaks my heart every time... like he goes straight from acting out passion and seduction to true, pure love that he can't hide.
but there are a lot of times in the movie where Christine really seems in love with the Phantom. are we to believe she feels that way out of attachment to the voice who guided her all those lonely years? is she fascinated with him despite her fear? even at this point in the movie, she seems in love with him, although she was part of the trap. is she faking it that well?
0:46 The way she sings "consume" is just amazing and so powerful. Oh my god.
I really love this sung by gerard Butler, he sounds really sexy and his voice gives me goosebumps. Honestly the Phantom really wasn't supposed to be sexy hes supposed to be hideous, but still I personally love this movie to see another interpretation to the Phantom :) I am not disapointed with this movie at all.
I never understood why in every production when Christine takes off his mask in this number his hair suddenly lessens and turns white, it didn't do that the first time
Does anyone else wonder what the entire score of 'Don Juan' would have sounded like. Yes, I realize it was a theatrical metaphor, but for some reason 'Past the Point of No Return' always strikes me as one of the most important pieces of 'The Phantom.' I don't know if it was just Sir Webber finally expressing his own true self to Ms. Brightman or if it was something more, but I've always wished that there was a complete version, lurking somewhere, of the whole production of 'Don Juan' somewhere.
I love how when they sing, the other gets like hypnotized by it. Ya know how christines goes into like a trance and closes her eyes, and the erik just stares in amazement. I just shows their connection and I think its beautiful
Wow! The look of loving she gives him when he's singing to her is so pure. When she ripped off his mask, she was begging for forgiveness with her guilty smile.
" That's All I ask of You" best marriage proposal ever #ijs
That's the real reason she takes off the mask - the one and only way she can keep herself from running off with the Phantom.
Ladies and gentlemen, that's what you call a proposal. ;)
So different from the novel and yet, still fabulous.
Sympathy for the phantom?
Only because he sings like a bloody angel.
Honestly, I think Gerard sang this number better than any Phantom. You can just feel the overwhelming emotion even though it's just a movie/musical.
I thought the first part of this was one most erotic scenes I had ever seen when I first saw this, and I still think so. No flaunting of bits, no overt dirty talk, just plain eroticism. Also, Raoul is a block of wood.
The whole plot of this story depends on the audience believing that the Phantom's deformity is so grotesque that it caused society (even his mother!) to shun and leave him an unloved outcast. This Phantom, though, just looks like sexy Gerard Butler with a moderate facial burn. Hardly a "loathsome gargoyle".
I agree with you guys. I cried for phantom when it came to the end of the drama... I really felt sorry about him... so lonely, so upset...
The fire that erupts after the chandelier crashes into the stage was not done with special effects, it was a real fire.
And truly he is a very underrated Phantom of all time!
This song is one of the most hot I've ever heard
When he throws his cape off...one thing crosses my mind...is he from Spain?
Saw "Phantom" last summer in London - it was fabulous but I still love this movie version. Wonderful passion, beautiful music, lovely dance and oh, what a masculine hunk Gerard Butler is - I have all his movies! This film is a tour de force. Some folks on here take it too seriously! It is musical theatre, meant for entertainment, not for realism! Get real and just enjoy the talent, the sights, the sounds!
-swoooooooooooooooooooooooooooon- thats why i love Erik....the anger, the passion, the voice... and yes perhaps the mask and deformity. if i were christine i would have gone past the point of no return long ago!
Did anyone else notice that when she takes his mask off parts of his deformed face just magically appears in areas his mask was not actually covering?
how i love the way her voice suddenly becomes strong and determined
"That's all I ask of-"
... you.... :(
0:42-0:51 her best note
2:14-2:30 his best note
They are both just amazing
um....isn't the phantom supposed to be horribly disfugured. He looks like he's hot no more than a bad sunburn
The Phantom also had a bad childhood. His mother didn't love him because of his face and he was beaten in a circus. The Phantom's childhood influenced him in a bad way. Anyone raised like that would be bitter, and do bad things. The Phantom literally had to kill, to buy his freedom.
He loved Christine. Christine and Raoul on the roof top broke his heart, but he dealt with it in a bad way.
Also consider, how he only killed people who said bad things about him our did bad things to him.
Why is everyone wondering why his hair color changed when she took off his mask? He was obviously wearing a wig.
I seriously started crying about this movie. I mean seriously all he wants is someone to love him!!!!
When the phantom and Christine are singing it shows Raoul and he's CRYING! aw poor Raoul! This is one of the times i don't hate him.
WHOAH!!! Time out! She picked Raoul because Phantom is CRAZY. She wanted to pick Phantom...
such a beautiful movie....it grips your soul so completely when you watch it. i can never get enough of it... best.movie.ever
Pause at 2:27. Imagine how it should have went: "Christine, thats all I ask of you!" (gerard butler's sexy voice trails on 'you') Christine kisses him passionately and he steps on the trap door. The theater still burns epically, but Christine and Erik ride off into the night!
But thats just me...
2:30 - WOMAN. LET THE MAN FINISH HIS HIGH NOTE.
holy crap. his face when she starts to sing. he thought he won, and I wish he did! *sob*
Raoul is crying because he is losing the woman, he has loved since they(Christine and Raoul) were kids...... You would be too if you were him!
and from here on out it's nothing but tears, especially at the ending. love can be so cruel
I think it's kinda funny how his little mask covered all that up.
This scene is a whole lot better than the one in the broadway play! After all The Point of No Return is a so much of a latin song! And for what we seen in this scene. It's really did fit the song perfectly!
this breaks my heart every single time i watch it.
this song makes me cry! he's so sad and lonely and messed up in the mind at the same time! society has created him... and all he wants is to be loved by christine... :) i fall for this character EVERY TIME!
Ok, the first time I saw this movie, I was 6, and I fell in love with it!!! Now im 11 and I still love it..... This part in my opinion, is the BEST!
I watch this movie almost everyday, the album is on my iPod and I know all the words to every song!!
I looovvveee this movie!
I know. Omg I loved this movie. He loves her so much. He was letting her know that he saw what happened between her and Raoul, but he still wanted her. Ugh, forget Christine, he can sing to me!
If it's Gerald playing The Phantom roll, yes, I would LOVE to live with him ;)
I bet Raoul was thinking, "dang it! I can't top this guy..."
@Penter2192
When he is preparing for the opera, you see him adjust the wig on his head. When he goes to see Christine he wears the black wig to cover up a lot of his ear, and he uses stage makeup and stuff to cover up the scars, and she pulls it off with the mask.
No one can dislike this... ever!
this is twilight for people with class!
This song is too lovely to my heart ♥ I love Phantom of the Opera
oh my god butler can really sing!!!!!!
i would hate the by the prop men who have to stand there waving the fake flames for the entire play
Raoul was not capable of the passion of the Phantom. And Raoul did not tell the managers how crazy they were not to cast Christine. The Phantom appreciated Christine far more than Raoul could ever have. Raoul was the safe acceptable choice.
I love all of the random, camp cape flacking!
This is such an amazing scene, I feel so ashamed that every time I see the mask come off I immediately think, "Christine, your fate lies in a flip of this coin..."
To those constantly defending the phantom with the whole "he's hotter" "he's just misunderstood" and "he loves her more than Raoul" I'd like to point this out,in the musical he's actually more disfigured then they did here (and casting Gerard Butler did not help things), but besides that he's obsessed with her to the point of making models of her and a dress, he set the opera house on fire, killed a man in cold blood, and tried to force her to stay with him by threatening the man she loves
poor Phamntom he just want to be loved :( I'LL LOVE YOU!!!!!
to take the phantom's mask off was a bit mean, especially as she had let him caress her just before
Despite Christine's absolute stupidity here, I find Raoul's face at 1:25 pretty entertaining.
It's like he has a realization he could never be as manly and powerful as the Phantom, aka, Erick.
And that´s Gerard Butler - HOT
We are watching this in our french class, and we were divided on either team Erik or team Raoul, my friend and i are on team Erik and it just so happens that our friends around us are on team Raoul, and so we were like arguing throughout the movie, lol, madame found us very entertaining
The most passionate and tragic part.... love it
The phantom and her did have a connection on an emotional level. In fleeting moments he was quite sweet, but he really messed it up by being extremely possessive and aggressive. Had the phantom not 'Messed things up', they would've been a nice couple. However, with the way things turned out in the end, Rauol was much better for her sadly.
Remove the fact that it's Gerard Butler and remember that he was using hypnosis and music to control/manipulate/fool her she didn't really have (at the time) a reason to go with him. She does however shows great love for him at the end of the musical not the movie :) Also I think the fact that he had killed and attempted to kill others scared her off :(
I don't see it being that white and black. the Phantom had much goodness in him and truly loved Christine more than Raoul could have. Raoul was the safe guy but limited qualities.
I love this scene.
I have always looked at Love Never Dies and Phantom of the Opera as having different sets of characters. I think it's the same with every rendition of Phantom...the novel, play, movie and sequel. The Christine in the original play and the sequel are just so different...same with Rauol and Erik. Rauol is whiny and pathetic, Erik is loving and selfless, Christine isn't afraid of Erik because his dark hostility and virulence isn't as intense. It's a different dynamic and seems more explorative.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!
I love how he represents a demon in the story and you can see in the movie the way she dresses and her makeup changes, even here her voice changes showing his influence on her bringing sin. Dude underlying message is in
Okay I'm not being rude or any thing but why didnt she run? I would but I love the phantom so I would have accepted his proposal in the first place!
I'm pretty sure, based on her expressions that Christine made the decision to pull off the mask, all by herself. The reason why Christine didn't instantly love him back was that first, she was unaware that the angel who visited her was a man as opposed to an actual angel. Next, he used her memories of her father and almost outright stated at some points that he was her father, to get her to spend time with him. Also she suffers from a case of Stockholm syndrome involving Phantom and he uses tha
I love the imagery when they fall through the trapdoor, like descending into hell. Also, I'm still bothered by the fact that no one does anything to get him.
i actually dont think in the movie you can call it abduction the first time she goes underground...she went willingly, even if she was in a kind of trance...
You do realize the phantom was pretty much a homicidal maniac who was obsessed with her... The entire time she was with him all he did was manipulate her (by convincing her he was the angel of music sent by her father, or simply by trying to seduce her). I love the phantom, he's the most interesting character in the movie, but think about it. If someone did all of this to you, do you really think you would choose them over your childhood sweetheart?
why on earth did she not go with the Phantom?! hes a heck of a lot sexier than that other guy!
I just love how Raoul us like 'Arg! Really?! Really?!'
Question! Was everyone was in a trance or something when they were singing?
Pause at 2:33 and just look at the crowd.
Old guy: "Oh my, I certainly don't want to see that!"
Mr. Noodle in the front: "Imma make a funny face at the camera...no one will notice!"
Chinese looking guy: "Maybe he'll throw the mask!"
Eu amo essa música! I loveeeeeee
I'd pick Garrard even with the metled face, like he still has one good side ;)
real smooth, the way christine removed his mask.
Deformed?
I've had sunburns worse than that!
i love the conductor's faces when christine is kidnapped lol O,O
yes bc everyone was seeing the attraction between them!
*SPOILER*
She does sleep with him. These is a second opera in which she has a son, the phantom's son
I agree, and in my opinion she stays under the spell until the phantom finally says the line "say you'll want me, with you here beside you" (she slowly opens her eyes as if she snaps out of it) which in a sense "puts the ball in her court" so to speak (Throughout POTOs entirety the phantoms lyrics are almost always speaking in a manipulative manner of control) but when he finally says that she realizes hes vulnerable and speaking with no manipulative intentions and she remembers what she hastodo
That, and he killed people.
