      I agree with you in regard to Gerard Butler. He clearly is not a great singer but he had a decent "stage" voice and his acting chops made his Phantom more of a passionate and sympathetic character than many other portrayals. Add to that Joel Schumacher's excellent and imaginative direction, Emmy Rossum's Christine and the movie version, taken on its own terms, is quite good. I've seen Phantom in San Francisco and the shorter version that Hal Prince restructured for the Las Vegas run and loved both of them (with Frank D'ambrosio in SF and Anthony Crivello in Vegas). This 25th Anniversary version can stand with both of them. The staging is superb and, of course, Ramin and Sierra are as good as it gets. I have the Blu-ray's of this performance and the movie version and never tire of watching them.

    What is really sad is that she starts to sing towards the Phantom and not and and not Raul ( even looks back to him) and seems very heartbroken when giving the ring back making some of us wonder if perhaps her feelings towards Erik may have been love but the circumstances and his actions was what pushed her to Raul's arms. There is a nod from Eric when she looks at him without words as if she is asking if the choice she's making/what she is doing is right?

    Ramin and Sierra put their heart and soul into their performances and they were brilliant! There’s always someone who says Hadley overacted. This whole play is so full of drama and strong emotions that for him to play it any less would have been a disservice to the play. I did read once that he said he said the eyeliner he wore was a whole other character! Truly one of the best plays and absolutely the best performances in the history of the theater!

    • @sunflower-xi5ct
      @sunflower-xi5ct Před měsícem +2

      Well he is definitely an antagonist but I will never consider the Phantom to be the ‘Villain’, SOCIETY itself is the Villain of this story.
      Society that would treat an innocent child like a monster for something he couldn’t control (his face) and in response he grows up feeling like he has to be what the world labeled him as from birth, what his own mother labeled him as from birth…because nobody sees him as anything else 😢
      A classic case of ‘since I’m always going to be a monster in the worlds eyes, I might as well embrace it’. And hence why it took Christine showing him love for the first time that allowed him to genuinely show love to her in return…someone saw him as something more then a monster so he could BE something more then a monster. ❤
      Society is the villain in this story, not the Phantom.
      Just my opinion.

  • @sofiasereni
    @sofiasereni Před 10 měsíci +8

    I feel when at 9:13 he says “a mask, my first” is not only referred to his real first mask but also to the fact that in his life he has to wear so many mask not only in the literal meaning but also the mask he has to wear in his feelings. To emphasise this there is, after “my first”, a long pause that for me give this sense to the entire sentence. Am I alone to think that?

    • @fluffyfeather39
      @fluffyfeather39 Před měsícem +1

      that was the takeaway i got from that too. sometimes all people know is to wear masks , like a self preservation thing, which of course is just a part of life. i think this story really does a good job of sharing and embracing the complex and tragic side of life

    • @sunflower-xi5ct
      @sunflower-xi5ct Před měsícem +2

      It’s the whole idea that’s he’s had to hide himself since birth practically since nobody, not even his own Mother, would accept him otherwise.
      That he could only be accepted so long as he hid himself. Hence why he felt he had to deceive Christine with the ‘Angel of Music’ ruse in order to get close to her, because like everybody else in his life he feared she’d reject him if he approached her for real…it’s heartbreaking 😢
      That’s why what Christine does here when she kisses him shakes the very foundation of his worldview about himself…the idea that someone could see past his face floors him, and in a weird way she gave him permission to be a Man and not a Monster ❤ whereas the World had only ever allowed him to be a Monster.

  • @warriorqueen863
    @warriorqueen863 Před rokem +37

    Whoah! Now I understand Phantom of the Opera...
    Bravo! Beautiful performance! Absolutely stunning casts and singers! Melts my heart!
    The phantom finally realised what real love is... But he knew he couldn't have Christine because she's still alive and he belongs to the dead. He realised it's better to free her and now that he knew that Christine made him feel what love is, he woke up to his senses and freed his obsession and everything including Christine back to her lover.
    Not all villains are bad. Some are indeed craving for just a little bit of kindness and understanding because they must have been badly hurt before and never received true love from those people. It only takes a small light of hope, love and kindness to brighten the dark - or the darkness in one's soul. 🌻🌷🌸🌷🌻

    The GREATEST musical since Jesus Christ Superstar. Of which i've seen both. I absolutely love Phantom and it's VERY SAD too see it go. I was lucky enough too see the oringal when Crawford and Brightman came to NY. But i have too say that Karminloo and Boggess were FANTASTIC in their roles.

  • @michaelbarlow6610
    @michaelbarlow6610 Před rokem +6

    I saw "Phantom of the Opera" 4 times including the original cast of Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman and Steve Barton and loved it each time, but no one, but no one can replace Crawford as the Phantom because unlike the subsequent actors who portrayed the Phantom, albeit very well, after Crawford left the show, Crawford gave the Phantom an ethereal, ghost-like, apparitional quality, whereas the other actors who played the role, while understandably not wanting to imitate/copy Crawford, were too herky-jerky in their gestures and movements on the stage. So sad that arguably the greatest musical of all-time has closed because the gross overreaction to the pandemic in the closing down of businesses during the pandemic ruined ticket sales because the decline in tourism to the USA - which long-running Broadway shows are dependent upon once locals have stopped buying tickets - made the rising production costs too expensive for the show to continue. Without the overreaction to the pandemic, that wonderful Broadway show would have run for at least 40 years!

      I wanted so badly to see Michael as the phantom! Robert Guillome (sp?) he played Mr Benson on Different Strokes, who knew he could sing? He was fabulous, did an amazing job, but, he wasn’t Michael😢.

    Ah i love this stage show they both have good voices and the song think of me reminds me of last February 2023 when my mum lost her left foot it reminds me of saying goodbye to it it was hard 😢😢😢 I love that bit when the phantom takes christine away and the other man turns up on stage and he said to the phantom free her the phantom just laughed at him do you think they are friends or rivals? The phantom and the other man are they rivals?
