Can we give a moment of thanks to the music engineer? The clarity and ability to hear each “voice” in this recording is extraordinary! (Not to mention the way to “low end” comes through so well!)
Yeah, some of the stuff they've done with the horns, harp, and upper winds is just fantastic!
I was the tmpanist in this & this was recorded in Dolby Atmos (Ten Times better than Dolby Digital) those microphones pick up the smallest noise like turning the page of your music to loud & in my case adjusting the note of the timpani using a creaky pedal. If you get yourself a Dolby Atmos sound bar then you won't regret it. As a professional musician i have played many versions of ALW's musicals (Phantom, Love Never Dies, Superstar etc) & this is the best suite arrangement i have ever played in) Andrew also did a suite for Sunset Boulevard & Evita recorded in the same sitting over 2 days. That piccolo player is AMAZING. As a flutist and piccolo player myself, his intonation and sound is mesmerizing. The climax of Masquerade is where he really shines.

I know! I’ve always loved when the French horn finishes music of the night 7:22 and the rest of the orchestra moves up the scale until they meet the French horn at the final chord!!! And in this rendition it was awesome!

"Sir" Lloyd Webber didn't create it, the orchestrator did. Webber just dotted a few notes down, and they did the rest.

Sure, for the Phantom film
I was the timpanist in this, This orchestra is probably around 70-80 musicians but a full symphonic orchestra which i played in the Phantom of the Opera live musical some years ago had about 120 musicians. Because all the instruments are mic'd up it sounds bigger than what you might think. If you ever get the chance to see any ALW show that has a full Symphonic Orchestra beg, borrow or steal to get a ticket, you will never forget it. These types of music sounds 10 times better if you have "Dolby Atmos". It sounds like your sitting in the middle of the orchestra with the sound coming above you, behind you on your left, on your right etc This is probably the best arrangement of a phantom Suite i have ever heard.
The secret for how so many great musicians gather to peform such great music is....$74.00 per hour.

14:51 to 15:09 is just, French horn beauty at its finest
One of the best orchestrations I have heard of the show (or any Broadway show). Follows in the traditions of the French and English masters, and yet it is fresh and original. And a nice nod to Stravinsky at the end. Really fantastic! Hats off to all involved, especially the orchestrator. I wish that person was acknowledged in the description.
Is a shame they never mentioned him. I look around and found the name of the orchestrator: Andrew Cottee.
Strange thing, but whilst I love his “big” works, this album left me cold. I thought the lifeless orchestrations were the poorest I’ve heard for his larger scale pieces.

@@darthkurland Yes, very similar in orchestration, the triangle, the tremolo in the strings, the crescendo into the crash cymbal to punctuate the ending. Very effective.

I am the same, harmonies confuse me, I can't hold a note to save myself. But in this clip I can sing like Michael Crawford, my imagination puts me there. For a music tragic like myself this is wonderful.

I really wish someone would do this for some of Stephen Sondheim's musicals, specifically Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd. A symphonic version of Johanna, Children Will Listen, No One Is Alone, Epiphany, etc., would knock the wind out of me. A symphonic suite of Sunday in the Park with George would also be fantastic

In the show the transition from Masquerade to the Phantom's theme is so gripping and powerful... those five beats that just strangle the party. My favourite single moment of my favourite musical.

I first saw "The Phantom of the Opera" when I was 17. I thought that it was the most amazing thing in the world.
I was in tears one moment and almost out of my body in ecstasy the next. Not often one can say that you have cried out of sheer joy because of music so beautiful. Andrew please please follow up with Love Never Dies! It will make my life having been worth living.
It lead me back to 2004 when I saw The Phantom movie. I was mesmerized by this themes in that time and now again. Today that cinema doesn't exist anymore but the memories remain vivid in my memory. Bravo maestro.

It definitely should sound amazing, seeing how many microphones they have set up to capture everything. I can't even imagine what that is like to set up and run, not to mention the mixing.
Mixed by Such Sweet Thunder who are Kirsty Whalley and Peter Cobbin. They have mixed many famous film scores. They are also credited with having recorded it which is an amazing piece of work in itself.

San Francisco midweek performance box seats in the early nineties, what a treat! The original Masquerade scene was brilliant and so vividly colorful. First time I saw grandfatherly men cry at the ending. I would love to see it again live with an orchestra this size😍😍

Beautiful, imaginative and intriguing! This music takes you through the labyrinth of the underground dwelling of the Phantom. One of the best symphonic suites, ever! I keep going back to it. This music is enchanting!

One of the greatest full symphonic performances & best arrangement of ALW's Phantoms suites i have ever played. Special mention to the french horn players they were outstanding. Must have really busted their chops.

This is the right way to commemorate the Phantom’s 35-year run on Broadway. His final bow at the Majestic Theater in New York will be on April 16, with Andrew Lloyd Webber in attendance.
I really hope they film the final performance like they did for Rent. This will be an important piece of musical history that simply must be preserved in all its beauty

I can't ever imagine saying goodbye to POTO after being a phan for more than 10 years. I could still remember the time that I flew to London for the first time for POTO 25th Anniversary, continuing my music dream all these years. I have once imagined bringing the person I meet in the future and share with him this miraculous moment of watching my favourite musical together. I am so sad that this journey is coming to n end this soon, but as long as the memory lives on in our hearts, this musical will never die.

The greatest music for a stage production ever. I’ve been to Phantom, Les Miz, Rent, Aida(Verdi), Aida(Elton John), Tosca, La Boheme, Magic Flute, Carmen, Madam Butterfly, La Traviata. I’ve also attended Camina Burana, a concert of all Star Wars music, Beethoven’s 9th and more.

And my acapella choir during my junior and senior years in high school got the amazing opportunity to sing Masquerade!! 60 voices strong singing that song was absolutely Amazing!! I am so happy I ran across this scanning thru you tube. All the times I've seen the phantom I never once saw the orchestra play these beautiful and touching pieces. How many people are in this orchestra...they're spread out in such a large area. Mr. Weber, you are a genius. I have to admit I loved the Phantom with Gerard in it, the modern Phantom I didn't really care for...everything done on stage, the settings, costumes etc just weren't there. Thank you...love music, loved this video! ❤🎼🎶🎵
I was the timpanist in this there were close to 80 musicians but with everybody micd up it sounded more like a full symphonic orchestra which has usually at least 120 people. It was recorded over 2 days & Simon Lee really worked us hard. There was a young flutist (around 18) who was struggling with her part & was sacked & given her marching orders in front of the entire orchestra. I think Simon Lee could have handled that better. He is a real tough judge but he is a real hard ass although these musicians are the best of the best & are paid well & there should be a expectation that the musicians should deliver first class music. A hard, arduous 2 days but also enjoyable.
@@helpstopanimalabuse8153 Great to hear from an insider of the performance. Also, I hate it when the video director or editor does not recognize that when ever the timpanist is playing, he is the most visual instrumentalist in the orchestra.
@@1106gary You must be a mind reader, i was the Timpanist. The timpanis are the link between the brass & percussion. You need excellent tone hearing. If you hit one off note it's very obvious. it is a challenging instrument. Everybody was spaced out because of Covid. This was filmed at the Theatre Royal which ALW owns & had just spent 19 million dollars on a complete refurbishment. it looks stunning. The top section is very high & steep. There are 2 other similar pieces we recorded. Just search "Sunset Boulevarde Symphonic Suite" & Evita Symphonic Suite.
I always *ba dump ba dump* in my head to the overture whenever I hear it. Can't wait to see a live stage performance of the musical.
BEAUTIFUL! the last time i heard an orchestra arrangement for The Phantom of the Opera was Sarah Chang and Julian Lloyd Webber's violin and cello double concerto. Hoped that someone would do an all-orchestra arrangement...and here it is! Exceptional!

As I sit here listening/watching, I am transported back to the 2nd row, stage center, during the performance of Phantom! I have the original CD and listen often, but the absolutely lush sound of this orchestration is transformative.
I listened to it with good headphones and it sounds so amazing 😍
