"Child in Time" is a classic rock song by the British band Deep Purple, featured on their 1970 album "Deep Purple in Rock." The song is renowned for its powerful and emotional delivery, characterized by its dynamic progression and Ian Gillan's extraordinary vocal range.
"Child in Time" is often interpreted as an anti-war song, reflecting the tensions and fears of the Cold War era. The lyrics convey a sense of innocence lost and the tragic consequences of conflict. Key lyrics include:
"Sweet child in time, you'll see the line, the line that's drawn between the good and the bad."
"See the blind man shooting at the world, bullets flying, taking toll."
The song is widely regarded as one of Deep Purple's masterpieces and a quintessential track of the early 1970s rock era.

I've always wondered how we got to a relationship gone horribly wrong from a war song. So the person must've been gravely injured twice and each time he thought he would die, but he survived? Not wanting to be in that environment any longer, he ended it himself? Or he tried three times and finally succeeded on the third attempt??? Oh boy.

Jon Lord, the keyboard player, was also a classical composer and pianist. The band made an album with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1969, playing Jon Lord's "Concerto for Group and Orchestra". Ian Gillan, the singer, before Deep Purple was the original singer of the Christ part in the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar".

I LOVE this band and watching Corey's reacti I n was purr magic. So there has been a few line ups of the band but this version is Ian Paice on drums, Jon Lord (rip) on organ, Roger Glover bass, Richie Blackmore lead guitar and again Ian Gillan on vocals. Please keep going down this rabbit hole. Burn Live at Rainbow is also awesome with two new members David Coverdale for Ian Gillan and Glenn Hughes for Roger Glover. Opened my ears, eyes, heart and soul to (all kinds of) music up until today. I saw Deep Purple again just the day before yesterday ( they were appearing at a festival just forty miles away from where I live here in France, so I could not pass up). Three original members, Gillan, Paice and Glover not too far from their 80s now, and their two younger recruits on keyboards and guitar were still FIRE ! Understandably they did not do this song, but Gillan was quite impressive throughout the concert and got the crowd (average age of 75 😊) on it’s feet from beginning to end. Maybe my very last concert ? … at my age one never knows … but I can go happy ! Kudos to you three and don’t forget to check out DP’s "Lazy".

Deep Purple has a long turbulent history but they are surprisingly one of the only 'Unholy Trinity' bands touring and recording in 2024...
Formed in 1968 after the collapse of the band Roundabout in London, England... they were named after a song that was a favorite of guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's grandmother... Originally a pop rock band, Deep Purple featured Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Jon Lord (organ/ keyboard), Ian Paice (drums), Nick Simper (bass) and Rod Evans (vocals)... they were signed in the US by Bill Cosby's label and released 3 albums scoring hit cover songs - 'Hush'... 'Lalena' ... 'Kentucky woman'...
In 1969, the first Led Zeppelin album and Jimi Hendrix changed the rock game and Ritchie Blackmore wanted to play that new brand of 'heavy rock'... Ian Gillan (vocals) and Roger Glover (bass) replaced Evans and Simper (Often called the 'Mark II line-up) and the band recorded a 'Concerto' album in '69 w/ a classical orchestra, then began work on their 4th studio album 'In Rock' in 1970... the single 'Black night' and the new heavy rock sound became an instant success in Europe... Deep Purple rose quickly w/ the albums 'Fireball' (1971) and 'Machine head' (1972) ... and broke big in America again in '72 w/ the live album 'Made in Japan'... 7th album 'Who do we think we are' in 1973 was another hit but internal conflicts led to both Ian Gillan and Roger Glover leaving Deep Purple in '73... Ritchie Blackmore insisted that new members were necessary to continue.
Deep Purple's 'Mark III' line-up launched in 1974 w/ David Coverdale (lead vocals) and Glenn Hughes (bass & vocals) and were a hit w/ the albums 'Burn' and 'Stormbringer'... but at the peak of the band's popularity in 1975, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore quit the band and announced a new band Rainbow w/ legendary singer Ronnie James Dio.
Tommy Bolin (guitar) joined briefly for their 1975 album 'Come taste the band'... but fans were not interested in Deep Purple without Ritchie Blackmore... After a disastrous tour marred by tragedy, Deep Purple split up in 1976... Tommy Bolin soon passed away from an OD.
Singer David Coverdale formed the band Whitesnake and found massive success in the 80's.
After years in separate bands, Deep Purple finally reunited the 'Mark II' line-up (Blackmore/ Lord/ Paice/ Gillan /Glover) and recorded the album 'Perfect strangers' in 1984, touring together for the first time since 1973... But more of the same conflicts between Blackmore and Gillan after the 1987 album 'House of blue light'... Ian Gillan was fired and former Rainbow singer Joe Lynn Turner did 1 Deep Purple album 'Slaves and masters' in 1990... However, the other members wanted Ian Gillan back in Deep Purple for their 25th anniversary in 1993... Blackmore agreed to record the album (w/ vocalist Ian Gillan returning) 'The battle rages on' in '93 but he quit in the middle of the tour that year.
In 1994, Deep Purple hired former Kansas guitarist Steve Morse and stabilized the band finally... recording the albums 'Purpendicular' (1996) and 'Abandon' (1998)... In 2003, the band amicably parted ways w/ keyboardist Jon Lord who wanted to focus of classical music projects and was replaced by former Rainbow keyboardist Don Airey.
Sadly, keyboardist Jon Lord passed away in 2012 from cancer.
Deep Purple enjoyed a successful career revival between 2002 to 2022... touring and recording consistently and newer albums like "Now what?!' (2013) and 'Infinite' (2017) charting worldwide... In 2022, guitarist Steve Morse left Deep Purple to care for his ailing wife and unable to commit to extensive touring... Simon McBride (guitar) replaced him and Deep Purple have a new album "=1" due out in 2024 w/ new singles - 'Pictures of you' ... 'Lazy sod' ... 'Portable door' ... currently streaming.

Glad to see you guys expanding your musical palate. There is this preconceived notion that heavy rock is loud and associated with drugs and out of control behavior (which there is some truth) but you guys have also recognized the brilliant-Talent-Genius that is reflected.
Thank you for keeping an open mind. You are taking in and experiencing generational landscape changing music.

I'm 56 and thought I was a D P fan for a long time until I saw this performance a few years ago on YT. I'm still blown away every time I watch this video. And the way they suddenly dropped the incredible jam session all at once - I can hear my heart pounding in my chest and then that subtle organ comes back and I start breathing again. It's insane! Have a great day/night, gentlemen. Thank you.

I can still remember when and where I was when I first heard this song. I went with some friends to visit one of their friends who had just completed his time in the Army, returning home from Germany. He put this album, “In Rock,” on the turntable, and it blew my mind. I had to have that album, it instantly became my favorite album. I still have it, it’s still one of my favorite albums, and that was almost 50 years ago. It rocks hard, from beginning to end.
You guys are completely right, they are all musical geniuses; and music has no boundaries. As soon as I saw you guys were reacting to this, I knew you were going to love it, and had to experience, through you all, that first hearing.

Remaining original lineup shown here: singer, Ian Gillan, bassist, Roger Glover, and drummer, Ian Paice are back with new song and album with Don Airey, who replaced legend, late Jon Lord on the keys and new guitarist, Simon McBride. Glad to hear Corey mention the blues because it was a strong thread throughout, although it got Rockified, sorta similar to the way Zeppelin did it. This translation of the blues into something Rockified came out of where back in the Sixties? It was just part of a creative process. Only a few groups did it like Purple and Zeppelin though. Easy to talk about, tough to bring into the world at this level.

Ian Gillian the singer was the original Jesus in Jesus Christ Supertar album. Richie Blackmore the guitarist is now into Medieval Folk. He created the group Rainbow as well after leaving Deep Purple. They were among the first Hard Rock bands who influenced Metal like Judas Priest who came just after. Purple went through many changes and still sing today - different guitarist and keyboardist. Jon Lord on organ is among the Rock greats just like Ian Paice on Drums. Their live album Made In Japan is a classic live album. Check that out : Smoke On The Water or Highway Star.
