The reason the audience is so 'chill' is that was being recorded by the BBC for radio and TV, and they were told to keep quiet and still to ensure a good recording. It is being filmed in a TV studio
@@AbzScotland it was recorded at Granada tv studios in Manchester
In the audience sitting at the back wearing a pink top is George Best
No that’s not true. It was considered cool in the early 70s to just sit and listen to what was then considered’serious’ rock music. College audiences would sit cross legged on the floor, maybe nodding along in appreciation. Maybe at festivals you’d get the odd isolated ‘moondancer. Jumping around and dancing and waving at that point was mainly for pop fans.
The main reason the audience is seated and quietly stoic is because it was a live recording session, and the studio mics would pick up crowd noise. Audiences were instructed to remain silent and still to preserve the cleanest audio signal for radio and television broadcast.
Sorry guys you must have been living under a rock Deep Purple are one of the giants up there with Led Zep. Highly respected and multitalented musicians still going to this day with massive sales to date. If you know you know.
Well, I wouldn't say they've retained their legend status AS much as Zeppelin or Sabbath. For one thing, they've gone thru so many different iterations, whereas the former have not. Of course the "classic" lineup in the video here makes for one of the most magnificent set of rock musicians ever assembled!
Deep Purple were a part of the Trilogy of English rock. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. My favourite band of all time. Their album MachineHead was outstanding.
When you can make the argument that Smoke On Tthe Water is the 6th best song on the seven track release, it's okay.
Rock`s trilogy was, no, it was ELP, Zep ZEP, DP,w³is:Beatles,Stones, & I'll keep your guessing
@theheepster
The amount of "trilogy" comments irritate the hell out me !
Personally i would put heep above zeppelin.
(Sabbath are a different beast and deserve their own genre !)
(I think I might have said this to you a while back. Sorry if I'm repeating myself)
Deep Purple! The line up at this time was formidable. Ian Gillan says that what was special about him was that he could scream in tune.
I watch every Child in Time reaction video when I come across one, and you guys are one of the only ones who laugh when Gillan jumps at the camera when it's in his face. Oh yeah, now you've gotta do Smoke on the Water. Yeah. Peace
Other incredible Deep Purple songs to react to:
- Hard Lovin' Man
- Black Night
- Into the Fire
- Fireball
- No No No
- The Mule
- Highway Star
- Lazy
- Pictures of Home
- When a Blind Man Cries
- Woman From Tokyo
- Rat Bat Blue
- Burn
- Might Just Take Your Life
- Mistreated
- Stormbringer
- Soldier of Fortune
Also any track from the Made In Japan live album. Cheers!
"Stargazer" from Rainbow is a must reaction. The guitarist's in Deep Purple teamed up with Ronnie James Dio on vocals. Great voice.
There is a follow up/sequel to Stargazer called A Light in the Black. It is just as good as Stargazer. These two songs took up the whole B side of their superb Rising album
Deep Purple Led Zep and Black Sabbath the British Unholy Trinity....the big 3 🤘
Hello from the Netherlands. Thank you for your nice comment on Child in Time by Deep Purple. When I was a teenager in the late 60's and early 70's my favorite groups with the songs Deep Purple-Black Night/Child in Time, Black Sabbath-Paranoid/Warpigs, Led Zeppelin-Whole Lotta Love/Stairway to Heaven The Who-My Generation and Iron Butterfly-Inagaddadavida were the first singles which I bought at that time and still have, with my first earned money. These groups were, say, the forerunners of heavy metal. I am now 70 years old and still listen to this music. In recent years I like to listen a lot to contemporary metal such as Nightwish, Epica and Metallica. Greetings from the Netherlands from a Metaloldie
I don't remember this tune getting any radio play back in the day, but I feel this is one of Deep Purple's best songs.
For more Deep Purple brilliance, check out "Highway Star," or "Black Knight," or slightly later in their catalogue "Stormbringer."
You must try Space Trucking, Knocking At Your Back Door, Perfect Strangers, Pictures of Home
Deep Purple is one of the biggest Name !
Ian Gillian is a great vocalist and sang the part of Jesus Christ on the original recording of Jesus Christ Superstar
@@lindalou6105 Amen! (Forgive me...) No, but that IS a wonderful, powerful song! The whole album is amazing.
@lindalou6105 Completely agree. And he did it in a couple of takes. One of the most powerful vocal performances ever.
That was Ian Gillian and he was on vocals for the 1983 Black Sabbath album born again.
Deep Purple were part of the "Unholy Trinity" of early rock which also included Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. This line up of DP is normally known as Mark 2 and is regarded as the greatest line-up. Highway Star is probably a good place to go next.
Liked the fun edits with the "70's cam" andthe close-ups of you guys reacting when Ian screamed his cool head off! This group (i.e., THIS particular lineup--there were other formations of Deep Purple thru the years) was one of the best rock groups EVER, just in terms of musicianship alone. The fact that they wrote all kinds of kick-ass songs helped seal them as Legendary.
Great reaction, Love all this old music, its so classic and awesome !!
Cheerz !!!
Ian Gillian performed in the title role of Jesus Christ Superstar on an album mae at Decca Records
Nobody mentions Deep Purple anymore, and nobody hears about them? They still fill stadiums worldwide 🌐!
@@-theeddieshow-learn that you don’t talk just to talk ignorantly!! “Nobody” lol! Most humans love their delusions!
This was recorded for by Granada Tv for a UK series called Doing Their Thing
Girl you are a real flower child with that 60's style dress. Just add a flower in your hair and your there. I lived it so I know. Peace and Love!
I highly suggest “Perfect Strangers” by Deep Purple… it’s probably their highest listened to, hardest rockin song thst made the radio. It was huge in the beginning of the Mtv era. Great song, it kills on vocals and drive, and guitar. Check it out for yourselves… hope you react to it, I’d love that, and I’m sure as popular as the song was, it’ll get a ton of views
For more of the singer, Ian Gillan, check out his performance of 'Gethsemene' as Jesus on the original 'Jesus Christ Superstar' concept album. Ted Neeley in the film, but Ian Gillan nails it. See also the Jon Lord Tribute performance of 'When a Blind Man Cries'. Love ya guys.
Completely agree - he is just amazing in the role and blows Ted Neely (who I appreciate for his longevity and commitment to the role) away.
Woo hoo, been waiting for you (Kayla) to react to this one. The vocal is amazing. Nice 60's vibe with dress, btw. Flower power.
Surprisingly, they are quite big in the rest of the world, only the media in the US ignores them for some reason, there are countries where they are bigger than Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. And how can one ignore Ian Gillan (vocalist) who became the inspiration for rock vocalists like Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford or Eric Adams and practically became the creator of metal vocals. After all, he was the first and best Jesus in rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar.
Bigger than Zeppelin? You're talking crap. They would probably given Zeppelin a run for their money if they didn't keep doing line up changes.
@@Ray-mb3vf I do not understand what are you talking about. The fact that Deep Purple is very popular and loved in many countries of Europe, Asia and Latin America is a fact, and in some countries of these parts of the world they are more popular and loved than Led Zeppelin. And the change of line-ups has nothing to do with it, today they still have three main players from the most important line-up, and the change of line-up is the fate of each group who has lasted longer than 10 years. True, Deep Purple started doing this earlier, but what can you do, their name at baptising is Roundabout, and whatever you call a boat, it will float.
I saw the Unholy Trio and I was blown away by Deep Purple and especially Ian Gillan he is my all time favorite Rock voice. In Canada most people preferred Deep Purple and then Led Zeppelin
@@Ray-mb3vf During the years 1970 -74 deep Purple sold more albums, concert tickets and merchandise than any musical act on the planet, including Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Elvis, the Beatles and anyone. That is a FACT!
Eddie & Kayla
Audience members were informed not to react during the song because it was recorded live by BBC.
Thanks for reacting to Deep Purple, my favorite band. Listen to Ian Gillan singing "I only want to say / Gethsemane" (Jesus Christ Superstar), it's awesome!!! DEEP PURPLE FOREVER!!!
My husband saw them back in '74 in our hometown of Chicago and together we saw them about 6 or 7 years ago outside of Houston. Still terrific! Their first hit was Hush in 67/68. You've probably heard of their signature song Smoke on the Water but they have an extensive catalog. The guitarist Richtie Blackmore left DP and created a new band, Rainbow featuring amazing singer Ronnie James Dio, who later created his own band called....Dio!
This is the MK2 lineup, and all the band members created different bands
British bands are the best in the world
So I'm very glad I stumbled upon your channel. Being a guy that grew up in the 70's, Deep Purple was always one of my favorite go to bands. I think your channel will do very well. You are both very likable and have good taste in music. I love the 70's vibe Kayla gives off, she's like a flower child :) She actually reminds me of a young Michele Phillips from the Mommas and Pappas. Check them out when you get a chance and good luck with the channel. Oh and yes, I subscribed :)
I think the reason is that Gillan quit Purple in 73 when they sold most albums in the world and 75 Blackmore left and started Rainbow. And Purple quit in 76. While Zeppelin and Sabbath continued and grew bigger. And also Purple had to cancel US tours due to sickness. Mark II reunited in 84 and Purple hasn't stopped since then.
Ian Gillan the sing, played & sang the part of Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, on the original album release!
Ian Gillan quit Deep Purple because he wasn’t getting along with Ritchie Blackmore
So So glad I was born in the sixties and grew up in the 70's/80's...what a time...sad now!
@@muppeteer A long, long time ago, I can still remember how that music, used to make me smile….
@@-theeddieshow- Made me want to live...made me want to rock...made me care a little.
They’re in a television studio they tell the audience don’t make too much noise so they can get a good recording of the song
If you enjoy this band I would also suggest pretty much anything by Uriah Heep, same genre and same time period.
Deep Purple is amazing, and in the 70's and 80's they were iconic. They were constantly played on rock'n'roll radio stations and their songs were always in the top 10 or 20 greatest songs lists at the end of the year when stations would poll listeners and take a weekend to do the countdown. If it was a rainy day we'd throw on albums, have a listening party and Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Doors, The Police, etc were considerations on how we felt that day. Today, it feels like there's so much modern music that songs like this are just forgotten. Glad you enjoyed it. We always enjoy the honest reactions. It reminds me of what it was like when I heard a great song for the first time being overwhelmed by how incredible this song is. I still remember as a kid thinking "how does someone write a song like this?" I still think that. Incredible.
Kayla, listen to the first ever recorded „ Jesus Christ Superstar“-album from 1969, which came out before a movie was even on the horizon. Ian Gillan - the singer here - was the first man to sing Jesus. He screams his lungs out there 🙃
Subbed for the Rush , stayed for the Deep Purple . Please do Stargazer by Rainbow , Stranglehold by Ted Nugent and of course 2112 live in Toronto 1997 by Rush
And to think these guys are still going 55 years later all of them are in their 70s except jon Lord keyboards died 2012 71 from cancer 😢....
Another phenomenal live performance is Grand Funk Railroad's 1969 performance of Inside Looking Out
You should also try Deep Purple, Strange kind of woman, live circa 1970/72 . It will blow your tits off
That Track Is From The Bands 4Th Record: Deep Purple In Rock[1970]...The First With Ian Gillan On Vocals...

I'm fortunate to have seen this lineup of Deep Purple play live. Of course that makes me kinda old which isn't fortunate at all. 😂Gotta take the good with the bad I suppose. Love the video. You both have some great energy. ❤
Deep Purple has been my favorite for over 40 years ,, they are ,, the best !! Hey man , you have a very beautiful woman !!
If you have the inkling try the studio version of Deep Purple’s song Burn. One of the greatest guitar hooks of all time….as well as great vocals and phenomenal drumming.
Let’s see if the RUSH Army comes through for this one 😉
I ONLY KNOW 'KISS ARMY' ~ NEVER HEARD THE CRAP OF RUSH/RUSH ARMY 😮!! KNOW O N L Y GOOD ROCK MUSIC ❤🎉😊!!! BERNIE GERMANY 😊
Great reaction. But I think that you should know that Deep Purple worldwide is much more popular than Rush. They sold not far from 160 millions albums worldwide
Not screeching perfectly controlled what a voice 👍👍👍
There is just so much DP guys! Black Night, Space Truckin, Smoke on the Water (of course), Highway Star, Burn and Perfect Strangers, just name a few. This line up is Mk2 and the best IMHO. Saw Mk4 in concert in 1974. Yes, I am an old fart - 70yo.
Thank you for your reply. First time watching a video on your channel. By replying, you have earned a subscription. Well done.
If Kayla is in to high pitch male voices, you should check out Tommy Johansson of Sabaton and his cover of Steelhearts She´s Gone. That boy can sing!!!
I always loved Ian Gillan's voice and knew him from my early Gen-X childhood. His voice was cast as Jesus on the Decca album version of the rock-opera Jesus Christ Superstar that my parents had when I was young.
Love the Chanel and love the reactions. Deep Purple are alive and well and are still playing arenas all around the world.
This is pretty much the best song Deep Purple ever made--and one of the best songs ever.
Since you liked this though, I would highly recommend you do a reaction video to Rainbow's "Stargazer". Rainbow was a band formed by Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple (the guy who plays the guitar in this video) with the late Ronnie James Dio on vocals--one of the greatest singers of all time. I can guarantee 100% you'll get a kick out of it ;)
The organ/organ sound is still prominent in the music of the Polish Prog band, Riverside. Check them out.
Deep Purple is releasing a 50th anniversary box set of Machine Head March 30th!
Hello, I don't know what you have listened to in your young life, but Deep Purple, Leed Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, UFO, The Who, Pink Floyd, Procol Harum, Magnum, were among the most famous bands from the 60-70s and are today legendary and a school for almost all rock music of today!!!
The band Yes. Jon Anderson. To me the best "high" male voice. Most unique tone. Gillan is godly. "Disturbing the Priest" with him on Sabbath's Born Again album is tasty. Great reaction!
Perfect Stangers from the late 80's.
Hi coming from England when I was young I was listening to DEEP purple plus a lot of Rock music from the 70,s ,80,s Also saw
these live it was Freaking awesome I am now retired and still listening to this Awesome music because it was the what I could relate to All the best from a cold NOTTINGHAMSHIRE ENGLAND👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I know I'm old when you say why are they not a big name ? For me and my generation they are still massive
In some concerts Jon Lord (RIP) the keyboardist, actually rocks the organ onto its back feet and used a knife stuck into the keyboard to gain extra sustain a sight to see.
The Great and Mighty Deep Purple Mark ll.
The fact that the band broke up from 1975 until 1984 helps contribute to their lesser notoriety.
Deep Purple actually got this song from a San Francisco band called, It's A Beautiful Day....They had a song on their first record called BOMBAY CALLING...and they loved it, and put lyrics to it....
Ian Gillian, one of the best Voices in the 70th even perhaps today. If you really want to hear the best Male Vocal ever: Steelheart, I never let you go and She's gone, that knocks your Shoes off
Deep Purple were part of 70's Unholy Trinity with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath all from the UK. Ian Gillan was the original recording artist of Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar although never in the stage show Checkout his Gethsemane on CZcams. The high note was not originally in Lloyd Webers music sheet.
This is Steven from Montreal Canada you want a good Deep Purple song lazy 1972 live he loved it the guitar is amazing
This was the first time we heard the beginning of hard rock...we never heard anything like this before try to understand the time this came out..the are one of the greatest bands so many copied them
Anything with Ginger Baker, especially live, is just great music! Be it Graham Bond Organisation, Cream, Blind Faith, Baker's Airforce or whatever else 🤟👹❤
But i would bet you'd like Blind Faith Live in Hyde Park '69 :)
I turned 66 yo today! DP, was always great
Hi , I just found your reaction channel and i must say its awesome. Give DEEP PURPLE's Made in Japan album a listen.. It will blow your mind !
If you like higher pitched male voices, check out Yes with their lead singer, Jon Anderson. "Roundabout" would be a good starting track

You don't get musicians like this anymore...
It's the fuckin past
Liked & subbed .Great tune & great reaction, Mandrake Root by Deep Purple is another groovy banger. Heres a a tune you may like by Uriah Heep called July Morning 1972
This is an anti war song from the Vietnam War era. It’s about how young men trying to do the “right” thing go to war shooting at the world wind up killing innocents in a far away land. These guys then need to watch out for the bullets coming back at them. Read the lyrics with this in mind please.
You both are awesome, just discovered you... LOL your explanation about smoke on the water was so spot on..... Just like when I ask someone what's their favorite zeppelin dong and they say Stairway... LoL
Try Boston-More Than a Feeling or Foreplay/Longtime if you want a male singer with high pitch.
Marsha, Marsha, Marsha! ❤
The beehive hairdo was probably the biggest cause of the hole in the ozone layer
The Group, TRAFFIC, singing "THE LOW SPARK OF HIGH HEELED BOYS". DEEP PURPLE, The album "MACHINE HEAD" 1973 the whole album. Singer Ian Gillan, Guitarist Richie Blackmore, Bassist Roger Glover, Key Boards/ Organ John Lord, Drums Ian Pace. Gillan played Jesus Christ, in the Broadway Play / Rock Opera "JESUS CHIST SUPERATAR". I was thinking because of his great vocal range. If would like to give your ears a listen. The song is Gethsemane / I only want to say. Oh by the way DEEP PURPLE were a big deal back in the year 1973. Other classic songs by them. "HUSH", "MY WOMAN FROM TOKYO", "HIGHWAY STAR", "MAYBE I'M A LEO" , "LAZY", "SPACE TRUCK'N"...
First record I ever bought was Deep Purple "Black Knight". Second was Black Sabbath's "Paranoid". "Child in Time" still sits in my Top 10 Favourite songs.
Can I suggest you watch Chinese singer Hua Chenyu doing "Nunchucks" (not in my Top 50 Hua Hua Performances but gives a fun intro to SOME of what he does.. Rock, Rap, Reggae, SynthPop, Pop, Ballads, Accoustic, Broadway, Electronic etc). For me Hua Chenyu is the best performer on the Planet now.

Great reaction. I wonder if you two would appreciate some Jethro Tull? Same era but different sound. I think you would , possibly Aqualung or Locomotive Breath.
I know as a person with a pen is I'm not supposed to to comment on a woman's looks but this lady is gorgeous.
Apparently they played there first paid gig at the lion Warrington my first club.
Great reaction. To see the versatility of this band, please check out Deep Purples - "Can't Do It Right" from their album Stormbringer. Some good funk and soul. They could do it all.
This is an anti-war song, the year might let you know what war they were singing about, as did many other bands of that time
For baby making music with a high pitched voice try Tim Buckley "Because Of You". The song is rock/funk, though they also do folk and have many other great songs.
Ian Gillen was the first Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar in London .... A superb vocalist .
Purple got very little radio play because of their style of music, where as zeppelin, Sabbath did ...
The reason nobody mentions Deep Purple is the giant corporate music HYPE machine has chosen to ignore them. They are part of the Unholy Trinity of 70's Rock along with Zep & Sabbath.....but Purple have not received the same media coverage as the latter two. Purple was the biggest band in the world in terms of sales and concert receipts in 1972 to 1974....but they weren't the critical and media darlings that Zep and Sabs became. Last laugh....Zep and Sab are done, gone, just a memory. Deep Purple lives on to this day, still putting out albums, still touring.
Male high pitched voices? I have always enjoyed songs like "Julia", "Subway Sue" and others by the american group Pavlov's Dog. They have been an art act so unique.
insanely gifted musicians, one of the first worldwide bands of late 60's early 70
