This is a job every home owner needs to know how to do. What others can you guys think of?
Hi Diy guy, nice and clear instructions..I had this happen to me and it is so easy for opportunists to snap a lock with no more than a pair of pliers and 30s to spare....had to replace all my locks...It can be a little more tricky on french doors as the screw on the 2nd door can be hidden..If you do have french doors also fit Patlocks for additional security..Make sure the Patlock is fitted properly with the anti pull out washer, maybe if you have french doors give that a go....keep up the good work.
Too right, anything else is just folly. An investment in ABS locks now saves potentially a lot of hassle later.
@@martinlee7100thanks, some good info there 👍

How about how to adjust that door if it's sticking or catching on the frame 🤔
You saved me a £125 call out fee. It took me 30mins including travel time to B&Q! Thank you for the great video.
Glad I could help!
I can't thank you enough for the job you do, is not about doing videos is literally about making people's life easier. I was quoted £250 for a £45 that I can perfectly install myself.
Glad I could help 😊
Always good to replace locks in a new house.
You clear and calm explanation makes it seem very easy. Your videos are all superb.
Absolutely. Thanks 👍
Thank you for a real easy explanation in how to change a barrel and the safety aspect. Saved me a small fortune.... 👍🥰
Excellent video and well presented for the first time DIYer changing a lock.
Thank you. Need to do this shortly. Very clearly explained for this DIY'er. Subscribed 👍
Thanks for the sub!
Excellent demo for DIY option
Worth noting if you're replacing a full set you can order up multiple cylinders on the same key. Really nice not to be lugging lots of metal around.
Absolutely, great point
Any good suppliers that don’t want £70+ a lock?
Can you advise where from? For a 3 star anti pick, bump or drill.
I got some keyed alike ABS locks on ebay for a good price, from what seemed to be a locksmith business. Just make sure to send them to a friend/family house just to be on the safe side.
Excellent advice many thanks 👍 keep up the good work sir.
Thanks Cameron , simple job but very informative video👌
👍your welcome
Great video - thank you. Didn’t realise how easy this job would be!
You're welcome!
Very good explanation, DIY guy. Thank you. Clear and concise. We liked your point about security too, thumbs up. One of the screws on our lock is 'stripped' - tricky to get Phillips screwdriver on it, just wondered if any tips to remove it? Thanks again. Andy.
Very clear video, thank you. In your opinion is the TESA brand good?
Having watched hours of your content this has probably been the most beneficial yet. Am about to move house and was going to pay hundreds of ££ to get the locks changed. I had no idea it was such a DIY job. Thank you 🙌
Great to hear! Thanks 😊
did this the other day, went with the same model as you but with a thumbturn on the inside for a safer lock in the event of a home fire as you mentioned. simple enough job and provides a little extra reassurance
Absolutely 👍
Thank you, we are in the process of buying our home and hope to complete in a few months. Already making a list of what to do and 2st thing, will be to change the locks for the front and kitchen door. Learnt a lot from your channel and looking to apply in a few months time.
Glad it was helpful! And good luck with the move
Excellent short very informative video for the start of 2024. Well done, keep them coming. 👍 Really helpful, been wanting to change our Euro cylinders for a while now, but was a little unsure what to go for. Many thanks for the advice. Really looking forward to your new video’s coming this year. Been enjoying watching your new home progress so far, renovating whilst living in can be stressful and chaotic, but will be well worth it in the end. I can see by what you have done so far, your home will be an absolutely stunning place. 👌 Also looking forward to the new workshop develop. 😁
Thanks a lot Ian. Loads to come this year 😊👍
This is the best description video I have seen, thanks from a panicky homeowner who's lock has failed coming up to Easter. Tomorrow I can replace the barrel thanks to you.
Perfect, thanks
Great video and well explained as always. We were broken into last November using this method. I was planning on changing all my locks to 5* Ultron so this video has definitely helped.
Glad it was helpful! And sorry to hear about the break in
I love this guy

👍
Thanks! 😃
Thanks for this video. I've had a troublesome lock for a while now, and after watching this video, I bought a new lock and replaced it over the weekend. Very simple process. Thanks.
Glad it helped
Great video, thank you for this, you saved me so much money. Needed to change two locks and your video did the job.
Glad it helped!
Great video, thanks. Changed my locks this week due to an attempted 'lock snapper' break in. Went for the Yale three stars and also upgraded the door handles with reinforced two star handles (the original handle was destroyed during the attempt).
👍 glad you got sorted without them succeeding
Once again the DIY Guy doesn't fail to please!
Thanks 😊
I changed my locks 5 years ago to ABS and did a one key home on a custom order. Definitely worth every penny.
Excellent as always. just love your vids as I show my daughter all of them so she can be as handy around the house as me :)
Glad you like them!
Thank you for your informative video!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video. Very informative 👏
Glad it was helpful!
Yep, definitely gonna upgrade now!.., great channel this 👍
Awesome! Thank you!
Great video, one small point, the screwdriver you used was a pozi drive not a philips, it got little square bits between the flights, the screw is a philips as it does not have the little markes between the cross.
GOD BLESS YOU.
YOU'RE A GOOD MAN
Thanks
Thanks for the video....
A brilliant tutorial, many thanks and you got my sub.
Thanks for the sub!
Thanks for the update
Any time!
Excellent instructions, very clear and straightforward. The only missing instruction was not showing how and wear you measure to get the internal measurements when the lock is still in the door. I’m a complete novice so need everything walked through, but saying that this is a really good video.
Thanks. With the lock still inside the door you would use method two in the video. Measure from the handle plate to the centre of the screw
Very interesting Ty very much well explained
Very welcome
brill again, cheers!
Your welcome 🤗
Thank you. I just replaced my cylinder myself 😊
Great vid, We are just buying a villa in Spain and emigrating and this is on my list as the first job to do on 31st January - 3 star anti snap locks on a single key. I am also going to fit a few other bits recommended by a locksmith, petty crime such as burglary is quite common and squatters if you get them in for more than 48 hours pretty much have more rights than the homeowner.
I am not sure what the 3 star markings actually signify but the ones I am after are the ones that after snapping a small, weak sacrificial portion at the front still need a key to operate them - some apparently snap further in and don't need a key when snapped even on high security rated locks.👍
All the best with the move
Love the content very very helpful
Thanks 😊
Great advice!
👍
Excellent video 👍
Thanks 😊
Two locks now changed. Front door and back door are different dimensions, I didn't know that. Thanks for the pointer/video.
No problem 👍
Have to say the best I have found, not cheap especially if you have 3 or 4 suited to the same key , but definitely worth it.
That's a top tip many thanks
Your welcome!
I'm a retired escape artist and in my past profession I have bypassed numerous locks inc prison ones! best advice for this type of lock is an anti bump key lock.
Thanks, subbed, great video.
Thanks 🙏
Great advice
👍
Thank you!
Your welcome
This video has come just in time. Was needing a video to replace locks in a new house
Brilliant
Great demo. Always best practice to change clocks when u move into a new property as u dont know if previous owner still has keys. Fitted Avocet locks ,keyed alike and definitely safer tham the nasty, cheap cylinders fitted by window company.
👍
Very useful video
Thanks a lot
I would recommend homeowners to do this, it was an easy job and I feel more secure with the three star Yale cylinders. I replaced the spindle of the handle at the same time as the existing spindle was starting to round through use so that might be a useful video?
Absolutely. Thanks
I was actually thinking about this the other day
Now you know 😊
Other tutorials broke the cilinder to replace it but now I saved my old cilinder for lock picking
Thank you
You're welcome
I hope you are well mate, Thanks for doing this video, I've been trying to convince family members to change for years,
I have ABS's best lock,
What us your opinion on ABS?
Your welcome. Yep I’ve heard great things about ABS locks 👍
Sorry if this is a dumb question. If I need to replace a 45 ( internal ) and a 55 ( external ) lock which one do I buy - a 45/55 one or a 55/45 one ? I've looked online and can't find the answer, I'm presuming it does matter. Thanks.
How much are these usually and where os the best place to order multiples but different sizes using just one key system?
I'm going to get a jeweller to emboss the 3 stars and kite mark on my existing locks. 😂
Also, I looked on my door after watching this video. They already have the 3 stars and kite mark. Phew.
Thanks for all your videos. Good clear content as always.
Hah! Cheers
Thank you, in the video you mentioned Yale and what is the name of the another brand?
Ultion 👍
I have a door that if u pull the handle up 2 locking bars come out from the top and the bottom of the door frame. The actual lock is playing up , is changing this still the same or is the internal mechanism a lot more complicated as it’s attached somehow to the 2 extra bars
Hi mate, love all your videos could you please show me how to put a double plug socket in the loft cutting into one of the cables in the loft haven’t got a loft conversion just want some power in the loft would be really grateful if you could do a video
Good suggestion 👍
Great advice as usual Cameron, would a 3 star cylinder be anti bump as well.
Your welcome. Yes, 3 star is anti bump too
Maybe and ad on to this video would be lock drilling and the anti drill locks which I’m sure the 3Star Yale will be as if people may be confused on how they would still snap if flush with the exterior side of the door.. great channel by the way
Thanks. Good point. The 3 star is indeed anti drill and anti bump too.
The retaining screw on my lock is a socket Allen head not a countersunk one and is below / inside the door so how far do I unscrew it as I'm worried it may fall inside the door if I unscrew it too far...any help please ?
Two of my friends have literally just had this done , the thieves did it early hours of the morning whilst they were asleep took their car keys and stole their cars , I fitted 3 star euro locks years ago and if you haven’t for gods sake fit them. Thanks for the video 👍
All too common I’m afraid. Thanks for sharing
Gret vid! I noticed that the yale lock didn't have a ball on the cylinder in the middle. The link in your description to the yale lock does have a ball on it? After a quick Google, a lot of three star locks have balls in the middle. Any advice? Thanks. I'm worried about fitment issues
Anyone?
Due to consumer fitting issues yale have discontinued the ball but the lock is still a 3 star lock
great videos when the under floor heating one coming? 😬
Very helpful, I might need to change my cylinder lock because it keeps sticking & won’t turn. Unless somehow my door has dropped a bit & that’s what is causing it to stick 🤔
👍
Thanks for the video, what does a Yale euro cylinder with one star and a kite mark mean?
1 star is rated to withstand picking and drilling.
I learned as a kid how to open these locks, using a simple raking/wrench method, and latterly using a bump key.
The best deterrent for me is good quality cctv, very sad times we live in.
what should I do if my cyllinder does not want to shift with all screws removed- looks like a vary tight fit. I think it is old Mila brand?
Really useful video. Could I ask which lapel microphone you were using in the video too. I need one for my CZcams channel too. 😊
Sure, it’s a comica boom xd
Good video, but they always are. Could you provide details of adjusting these doors via the hinges and plates etc. Renewing the draught proofing rubber so we can keep the cold out and the warm in.
Thanks. Let me see what I can do for you
I’ve recently changed my lock, however the external bit sticks out as like the old one did. Is this okay?? I know the one you have done is flush.
You found a good source for keyed alike sets that are custom matched that don’t cost the absolute planet by any chance??
Also half euros for the garage door’s?
Would this be the same process for a patio door?
Yes this goes for any euro cylinder 👍
Fitted a new cylinder lock but when locked as it looks on your video but the key slot is in a horizontal position even though the locks still works. Any suggestions. It’s an abus cylinder lock
It's supposed to be horizontal.
Definitely go for an ABS lock, got them on all my external doors inc the garage, and you a get them suited to just one key.👍
I’ve heard good things about them. Never tried them myself but might have to check them out next time
do you have any recomended shop where to order the cylinder the official website dosen't seem to sell anything at all.
I know the thumb turn ones are less safe, but in an emergency situation (such as a fire) it could be life saving to get out fast. I haven't got one fitted but was considering it, cos I'm forever fumbling about trying to find the key.
Great point 👍
Brill vid useful stuff
👍
The later Ultion models have any lock snapping cuts along the barrel that precisely stop this practice.
They do 👍
You should also change the handle to a 3 star one too. The basic handles can easily be broken to give access to the lock barrel.
Spot on. This is why a cylinder without anti snap mixed with most handles is such an easy target.
👍👍👍🤔.Thank you
Anytime!
Is it exactly same to swap key to thumbturn?
It is indeed 👍
A video showing how to change the locking mechanism on a uPVC door and the plate that fits to the frame would be useful
Good idea 👍
Hi Bu, just want to point out a bit you got wrong, just for your information, the screw holding the euro lock in place is a phillips as you pointed out, then you got your screwdriver calling it a phillips, but sorry to say it was a pozi screwdriver, case of wrong driver for that screw. You can tell the difference, the pozi screw and driver have small wings between the 4 inserts and flat inserts and the phillips has no small wings and rounded inserts, hope this helps you to use the correct ends, specially on power tools, you can tell even more when using power, the bit keeps jumping out the screw and sounds like a machine gun, when you reach the end ir tightened.
It should also be added, most thieves want to get into properties in the smallest time with little noise therefore without arousing attention. Lock snapping is one of the few methods that ticks all of those boxes. So having an anti-snap lock DOES prevent thieves from wanting to break into your house since other methods are often either time consuming or require loud attention-grabbing noises (such as a window getting broken). Also since most properties still don't have these anti-snap locks, it's less risky for thieves to abandon a property with an anti-snap lock and find another property that doesn't.
I'm going to be replacing the locks on my house with these and encourage my parents to do the same!
Some great points here! Thanks
Ultion locks are the latest and most secure. They have an additional clamp that hold them in place that you can only access by removing the internal door handle/furniture.
👍 great points
Thanks for the video, one question - where’s your accent from? Bristol..Dorset maybe?
Norfolk 👍
hmm.. well i have tried 4 kind of locks, but all worked just fine. nut i dont quite get that test you are showing, because ofcause it will breake. if you pushed the lock further in like they were when in installed in door to give support on the whole cylinder. it would *not Break*🤔
Once the handle is snapped away then the cylinder will break in the same way shown in the video. Demonstrations of it done on a door can be seen on CZcams
Lock snaping has been on youtube for years I first saw it in 2009 and went with a Mul-T-Lock Garrison Break secure that had the sacrificial joint however when I moved house I swapped out the locks for a much better lock by far and only a one star cylinder the EVVA EPS and a Brisant locklock security handle that actually locks the door from inside without the need of the key, though this back fired because the wife would lock me out if we had argued lol and my key was useless
👍
Have you done a video on changing the toilet m8 l have still got a counsel toilet
I haven’t but can do one 👍
Sounds good if you could
Interesting to see international differences. I hated those locks when I lived in the UK & Italy, because a key can be required to exit, which is why it violates U.S. fire codes.
👍
Ultion locks have a high fail rate; they're just rebranded locks from Taiwan (Federal); Ultion did a good job with marketing them, but generally, I would say avoid them. I have replaced countless cylinders, and customers have been left locked out of their houses occasionally due to cores coming out of the cylinders. Yale and Ultion are 2 of the easiest locks to pick and are generally classed as beginner locks when learning to pick (search CZcams). I would get the advice of a trained professional before ordering your own locks. There are much better cylinder options if you know where to look and you value security.
Am I missing something here ? If the lock is correctly fitted, how do you get vice grips on the end of the lock when it is flush with the outside of the door ? 🤔
Check out some demos of how it is done on a door here on CZcams. Within seconds a pair of grips can be used to either snap or bend the handle away from the cylinder, this then gives enough movement to snap the lock cylinder.
Criminals prise the door plate away that houses the barrel so that it exposes it more.
The anti snap locks are misleading with the name because they’ll still be able to be snapped but they’re designed in a way to snap close to the front rather than the middle, that way the locking mechanism isn’t accessible like shown in the video
👍
👍
We had one fail with the key snapped off inside (I wasn't home at the time to prevent her ladyship going hulk on it). Nothing would get the lock to release and I had to try drilling out, which was bloody hard going and made no difference despite quite a substantial mass of bored out material and parts. Finally resorted to snapping, which I'd wanted to avoid for fear of damaging the door's mechanism. It took a lot of force and that was with the luxury of access to both sides. Your demonstration was a little flawed with that floating end, as a lock in situ is partly supported and obstructed so has limited room to flex (very much so in our case). The point about their vulnerability still stands though. It's a rather obvious weakness of the design, really wonder why it wasn't mitigated before coming to market.
People who do this lever the cover of the lock on the outside which gives them more access to grip the lock as shown and snap it.
@@davesheffield3620 Yes I know, and burglars don't care what other damage it causes so they are free to bear down fully on the grips with the housing as fulcrum. I did purposely remove the handles and covers to gain purchase, but gripping and levering from both sides in order to confine the force as much as possible to the lock and avoid transmission into the surrounding hardware.
