    Just as a heads up, a garment can legally be labeled "hand knitted" as long as a person operated the knitting machine, not a computer operated it. It doesn't necessarily mean someone made it with two needles by hand. Crochet on the other hand is ALWAYS handmade by a person with a hook. It's not possible for a machine to crochet, just because of the structure of the stitches.
    Edited to add: for clarification, a machine might be able to do a basic crochet chain, but nothing more than that; it couldn't do a single, double, half double etc. stitch off the foundation chain.

      Exactly what I was thinking. Expecially since the stitches look even. I knit and my hand knit sweater doesn't look that even. The stitches don't look uniform because it's near impossible to get a uniform tention.

      I was gonna say this! The price i think is an indicative of it, i saw small artists/knitters that said that pricing their creations/garments is a struggle, people asume that handknitting is easy because other brands will put "handknit" on their labels and price it very low, but in fact a lot of machinery were used in the process.

      The industry is so inherently unethical you'd have to pick brands and buy clothes PURELY on ethical grounds and spend hundreds of dollars per basic piece on average to even just do a meaningful amount of harm reduction compared to just shopping mall brands. It's IMPOSSIBLE to "make better decisions" our way out of these problems it's GOING to need regulation at this point.

    As a rule of thumb, it's very safe to assume that brands that don't discuss sustainability don't care about it. This doesn't mean that brands that do have a section on sustainability on their website are actually sustainable - greenwashing is a real passion for people who want to sell shit -, but any brand that makes an effort to be sustainable WILL advertise it.

    • @thinkingbout
      @thinkingbout Před 7 měsíci +35

      Yes, especially since being sustainable costs brands a lot of time, effort and money, they wouldn't spent otherwise. Getting it certified by specific sustainability labels also adds to the costs so those brands will be transparent about all the things they do!

    • @kellbear23
      @kellbear23 Před 5 měsíci +2

      @catIing Před 5 měsíci +15

      @@kellbear23 The way items are made now, they're inherently unsustainable. Making anything sustainably requires a deliberate choice and a new process. Chinese or not, a brand would have to choose to do that, and no brand would go out of its way to do anything and not talk about it. Also, this is a Chinese brand that sells worldwide so I don't believe that they wouldn't try to appeal to western customers on their website that's in English.

    As others have said, hand made doesn't mean slow fashion anymore. The only craft you cannot emulate on a machine is crochet, so if the piece is created with crochet elements then those will be traditionally hooked. Another big give away that the company is fast fashion and/or unethical in their garment factories is the cuts and sizing options. Happy to elaborate further if anyone is interested but the basic point is pattern cutting, drafting and grading are all highly specific and costly crafts that equate to a full size range and styles. Pants/trousers are normally missing from these brands as they require a lot of additional tailoring skill, they are omitted in favour of the "tubes and knit" school of fashion. This is easy to make, fast to stitch and most people will fit the products (hence all tops are cropped avoiding tummies and hips and most skirts are a line/fit n flare)
    From an old seamstress, designer and textile artist.

      the screen shot Mia shared said it was handmade knit wear, so maybe it was done by a knitting machine. They are operated by a single person who has to load the raw materials onto it, crank it by hand, etc. It still takes skill to use a knitting machine, and they are very quick to use compared to knitting on actual knitting needles. So maybe that is how it was done😊 But I agree, if it was actually knit on needles by hand, there is no way they could charge only $150😅 Sincerely, a knitter who spent more than that to make one sweater

    A good indicator of whether the clothing is sustainable is to check if the fabrics used are synthetic like polyester. These fabrics can be made to feel really nice and high end but are actually cheap and really unsustainable. Not always an indicator for ethicality but my rule of thumb is that brands that use too many of these low quality and low cost fabrics are more likely to be operating unethically

    One thing I’ve learned in my decade of buying exclusively secondhand or ethically: if a company pays their employees well and puts effort into sustainability, they make sure that information is easily accessible. There’s a high chance there will be a whole page of their website dedicated to it or a paragraph in the “about us” or “FAQs” sections. Any company that puts in that effort will be proud of it, and knows it’s a selling point/marketing tool, they wouldn’t make it difficult to find out if it were true. However if you can’t seem to find any information, you pretty much have to assume they’re going by “industry standards.”

They have more presence on chinese platforms instead. It most likely does not focus on ethical issues. Brands that make their products ethically and sustainably will publicly share that, without a shred of a doubt.
    If you can’t find any information about the company’s ethics it’s safe to assume they aren’t taking ethics into account at all.

  • @the_gaiaphage

    I think a good rule of thumb to follow when trying to determine if a brand is ethical is if the brand is transparent. if they don't make any attempt to detail their ethical/sustainable practices, they probably aren't ethical/sustainable. like if a company is actually sustainable and ethical, they will tell you everything you wanna know about their production process without you even asking lol. there are some certifications that companies can get that show they were deemed ethical and sustainable by a credible third party, but those cost money. so with small, new companies, just look for transparency ❤

      Not always , i used to work for a small sowing company in East Europe, we made things for brands in West Europe , but if you look us up before , you won't find much about it( mainly because the name we had , the company used for everything they made so it always will show up as their big section which had nothing to do with clothing). But we was by some people standards ethical company. We got decent pay , and we had good work environment. But for other people standards that may not be the case, because lets say the cost of one item to be made was calculated at 40Euro but once done and send to the brand , they put it on the store for 400 Euro , so someone will see that and say the company is not ethical . So no one can really say or judge a brand for being ethical or not based on some standards that are only acceptable for them.

  • @Yumypop
    @Yumypop Před 7 měsíci +305

    As a rule of thumb, if you can find nothing about a company, chances are that they are not sustainable and/or ethical. Sustainability is a big thing in marketing so if they were they'd tell you. Also they are more size inclusive than expected. They do have a 'Curve&Plus' line but those are mostly dresses.

    MIA THESE CLOTHES WERE MADE FOR YOU!!! It's truly amazing how each one of these items absolutely SCREECHES your name!!! The embroidery on these pieces is amazing, and whoa, lol.. i can see why this clothing line is a bit pricey just because so many of the items are knit and / or crocheted, but the embroidery alone can run the price up on something wherever it's applied. The attention to detail on every one of these pieces is evident even juat upon first sight. .

    I gotta be honest, I will never understand people who don’t check the size chart. Sizes vary so much from brand to brand (and sometimes product to product) and I find making returns such a hassle so I always NEED to triple check the size chart.

      Well problem is that some brands/sellers don`t use a custom size chart and just take one that is generalised. Or make one but use it for EVERY pattern, style and fabric which doesn`t work. Then there is also the proportion problem. When I order certain things I am often in between sizes and have to guess based on material, cut, etc. which one wold fit better. I love seller who include the models size/height which helps with figuring out proportions and reviews that have those sliders for people so there is also the info if a piece maybe runs bigger or smaller.

    Knitter here! These are definitely some cute pieces, and I feel like they're very likely machine knit. To make a knitted dress by hand with that size of yarn commercially would not only be impractical, it just wouldn't make sense because there are good knitting machines now. Like another commenter said, though, that doesn't necessarily mean they're not "handmade" in a sense (if you'd like to see how much work can go into using a knitting machine check out Engineering Knits. She's making a 1940s capsule wardrobe right now and boy, knitting machines can be HARD) but it also doesn't mean someone spent hours knitting stitch by stitch with two needles. For comparison I've been knitting for a few years and it took me a year and a half to knit a lace shawl by hand with lace weight mohair yarn. I did add beads as I went, though, and that took a ridiculously long time. But anyways, to make a piece that large hand knitting would take even the best knitters a very very long time.

    • @nowsynowsy
      @nowsynowsy Před 7 měsíci +6

      Absolutely no way they are hand knitted. Likely they were done on a software run machine (that still needs human handling as thread is a bitch sometimes), then cut to template and serged together.
      It's not bad, hand operated looms or knitting machines are absolutely not feasible from a business stand point.

    "Fits everywhere but the bust" is something I feel everyone woman above a B cup is familiar with. Maybe I'm crazy but if you think of an A as a small, and a B is as a medium, when it comes to standard sizing, a large should be able to accommodate a C! But when it comes to dresses and anything button-front, that tends not to be the case. It's rough out there for average-size people, for some reason. I'm about to just start making my own clothes, since my measurements are apparently just too wacky and crazy for ready-to-wear brands to conceptualize.
    Edit: 5:32 A fine-knit dress of this size should definitely cost more than $150, that's a lot of labor and superior skill. I'd expect something like that to cost at least $300 handmade. I'm suspicious. We've also got DollsKill levels of size inconsistency, looks like. Bummer.

    I’m sad that I’m in love with this brand XD mostly because they definitely won’t have my size and it’s too expensive, but I’ll live because thrift stores never fail me

    I’m so glad you did this!! So little info on this company. Love seeing the clothing for real. Wish you’d do part two and pick some of their corset style items! They do so many :)

    Mia that shade of pink is perfection on you. The fact that it matches your skin tone is exactly why you should wear it! Perfect "nude" tone. If you ever feel washed out, a bit of makeup usually does the trick with light colours. But I kept thinking how stunning it was throughout the entire video!

    As someone who has a 4 different nationalities (French, Dutch, German and British) and used to live in Canada, I would 100% recommend you go for french butter. It’s the best! Salted and non salted 👍🏼

    Hey Mia you might have heard of this but there’s this book called Color Your Style by David Zyla and it’s about finding the best colors for you based on the colors OF you and it’s quite interesting and fun! Maybe it would be a neat video idea for you and Mama Maples to try and help each other find your “true colors” (that’s what they’re called in the book) 🙃 I just thought of this because you said the pink you love is close to your skin color but idk that could also be good…
